Abstract
Spectroscopic, electronic and electron injection properties of a new class of linear carbon chain (LCC) based organic dyes have been investigated, by means of density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT), for application in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The photophysical properties of LCC-based dyes are tuned by changing the length of the linear carbon chain; UV/VIS absorption is red-shifted with increasing LCC length whereas oscillator strength and electron injection properties are reduced. Excellent nonlinear optical properties are predicted in particular for PY-N4 and PY-S4 dyes in the planar conformation. Results indicate that a LCC-bridge produces better results compared to benzene and thiophene bridges. Simulations of I--Dye@(TiO2)14 and Dye@(TiO2)14 anatase complexes indicate that designed dyes inject electrons efficiently into the TiO2 surface and can be regenerated by electron transfer from the electrolyte. Superior properties in terms of efficiency are shown by compounds with a pyrrole ring as the donor group and PY-3N is expected to be a promising candidate for applications, however all the investigated dyes could provide a good performance in solar energy conversion. Our study demonstrates that computational design can provide a significant contribution to experimental work; we expect this study will contribute to future developments to identify new and highly efficient sensitizers.

Abstract
Alkyl group wrapped donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) based unsymmetrical squaraine dyes SQ1, SQ5, and SQS4 were used to evaluate the effect of sensitizing solvents on dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) efficiency. A drastic change in DSSC efficiency was observed when the photo-anodes were sensitized in acetonitrile (bad solvent when considering dye solubility) and chloroform (good solvent) with an Iodolyte (I-/I3-) electrolyte. The DSSC device sensitized with squaraine dyes in acetonitrile showed better photovoltaic performance with enhanced photocurrent generation and photovoltage compared to the device sensitized in chloroform. In a good sensitizing solvent, dyes with long hydrophobic alkyl chains are deleterious forming aggregates on the TiO2 surface, which results in an incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) response mostly from monomeric and dimeric structures. Meanwhile, a bad sensitizing solvent facilitates the formation of well-packed self-assembled structures on the TiO2 surface, which are responsible for a broad IPCE response and high device efficiencies. The photoanode sensitized in the bad sensitizing solvent showed enhanced VOC values of 642, 675, and 699 mV; JSC values of 6.38, 11.1, and 11.69 mA/cm2; and DSSC device efficiencies of 3.0, 5.63, and 6.13% for the SQ1, SQ5, and SQS4 dyes in the absence of a coadsorbent (chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA)), respectively, which were further enhanced by CDCA addition. Meanwhile, the photoanode sensitized in the good sensitizing solvent showed relatively low photovoltaic VOC values of 640, 652, and 650 mV; JSC values of 5.78, 6.79, and 6.24 mA/cm2; and device efficiencies of 2.73, 3.35, and 3.20% for SQ1, SQ5, and SQS4 in the absence of CDCA, respectively, which were further varied with equivalents of CDCA. The best DSSC device efficiencies of 6.13 and 3.20% were obtained for SQS4 without CDCA, where the dye was sensitized in acetonitrile (bad) and chloroform (good) sensitizing solvents, respectively.

Abstract
To develop efficient dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), concerted companion (CC) dyes XW60-XW63 constructed from the covalent linkage of a strapped porphyrin dye unit and an organic dye unit have been reported to exhibit panchromatic absorption and excellent photovoltaic performance. However, these CC dyes only afforded moderate VOC values of ca. 763 mV, demonstrating relatively weak antiaggregation ability, which remains an obstacle for further enhancing the photovoltaic behavior. To address this problem, we herein develop porphyrin dyes XW77-XW80 with the macrocycles wrapped with alkoxy chains of various lengths (OC6H13-OC22H45) and the corresponding CC dyes XW81-XW84 containing these porphyrin dye units. Interestingly, the new CC dyes XW81-XW83 exhibit increasing VOC from 745 to 784 mV with the chain lengths extended from C6 to C18, and a lowered VOC of 762 mV was obtained for XW84 when the chain length was further extended to C22. As a result, XW83 afforded the highest PCE of 12.2%, which is, to the best of our knowledge, the record efficiency for the iodine electrolyte-based solar cells sensitized with a single dye. These results can be rationalized by the so-called doubly concerted companion (DCC) effects, that is, the two subdye units exhibit not only complementary absorption but also concerted antiaggregation with the long wrapping chains on the porphyrins unit simultaneously protecting the porphyrin macrocycle and the neighboring organic subdye unit, thus affording panchromatic absorption and strong antiaggregation and anticharge-recombination ability. These results provide a new approach for constructing a class of DCC dyes to achieve high-performance DSSCs without using any antiaggregating coadsorbent or absorption-enhancing cosensitizer.

Abstract
The interfacial charge transfer (CT) that plays an important role in enhancing the photoelectric conversion efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) has not always been fully explored. Here, a TiO2@N719@Ag DSSC system was constructed, and the CT processes have been monitored by surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectra. Meanwhile, it is well known that as one of the most common external stimuli, high pressure can increase the free carrier density of TiO2 NPs and cause the band gap to narrow. In the high pressure SERS experiment, we observed a significant enhancement of the N719 dye in the TiO2@N719@Ag system up to 2.48 GPa, which is consistent with the variation trend of the charge transfer degree (ρCT). It is indicated that band gap changes will strongly affect the CT processes, further influence the SERS signal intensity (or ρCT), and thus increase the CT probability of DSSCs. Furthermore, the decoration of Ag NPs in the TiO2@N719@Ag DSSC system can introduce localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), enhance the light trapping ability and offer additional CT pathways. Importantly, it is possible to improve the photoelectric conversion performance of DSSCs via the high pressure method and the introduction of Ag NPs. Finally, in order to observe the CT process of DSSCs more clearly, the models describing the CT mechanism have been proposed. SERS spectroscopy is expected to be a promising technique for the exploration of the interfacial CT behavior in DSSC devices, which may further broaden the thoughts of improvement of efficiency of the cells.

Abstract
A 2,2'-bipyridine with bulky triphenylamine substituents in the 6 and 6' positions of the ligand (6,6'-ditriphenylamine-2,2'-bipyridine, 6,6'-diTPAbpy) was generated. Despite the steric bulk, the ligand readily formed bis(homoleptic) complexes with copper(I) and silver(I) ions. Unfortunately, efforts to use the 6,6'-diTPAbpy system to generate heteroleptic [Cu(6,6'-diTPAbpy)(bpy)]+ complexes were unsuccessful with only the [Cu(6,6'-diTPAbpy)2](PF6) complex observed. The 6,6'-diTPAbpy ligand could also be reacted with 6-coordinate metal ions that featured small ancillary ligands, namely, the [Re(CO)3Cl] and [Ru(CO)2Cl2] fragments. While the complexes could be formed in good yields, the steric bulk of the TPA units does alter the coordination geometry. This is most readily seen in the [(6,6'-diTPAbpy)Re(CO)3Cl] complex where the Re(I) ion is forced to sit 23° out of the plane formed by the bpy unit. The electrochemical and photophysical properties of the family of compounds were also examined. 6,6'-diTPAbpy exhibits a strong ILCT absorption band (356 nm, 50 mM-1 cm-1) which displays a small increase in intensity for the homoleptic complexes ([Cu(6,6'-diTPAbpy)2]+; 353 nm, 72 mM-1 cm-1, [Ag(6,6'-diTPAbpy)2]+; 353 nm, 75 mM-1 cm-1), despite containing 2 equiv of the ligand, attributed to an increased dihedral angle between the TPA and bpy moieties. For the 6-coordinate complexes the ILCT band is further decreased in intensity and overlaps with MLCT bands, consistent with a further increased TPA-bpy dihedral angle. Emission from the 1ILCT state is observed at 436 nm (τ = 4.4 ns) for 6,6'-diTPAbpy and does not shift for the Cu, Ag, and Re complexes, although an additional 3MLCT emission is observed for [Re(6,6'-diTPAbpy)(CO)3Cl] (640 nm, τ = 13.8 ns). No emission was observed for [Ru(6,6'-diTPAbpy)(CO)2Cl2]. Transient absorption measurements revealed the population of a 3ILCT state for the Cu and Ag complexes (τ = 80 ns). All assignments were supported by TD-DFT calculations and resonance Raman spectroscopic measurements.

Abstract
To fabricate efficient dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), 4-tert-butylpyridine (TBP) is commonly used as an additive in the electrolytes for improving the photovoltages (VOC). However, TBP cannot play a positive role in improving the photocurrent (JSC) because of the lack of absorption in the visible-wavelength range. We herein report a light-absorbing pyridine derivative N1 as an additive for the axial coordination with porphyrin dyes. N1 was synthesized by introducing a (bis(4-methoxyphenyl)amino)anthryl moiety into the para-position of pyridine via an acetylene bridge, and porphyrin dye XW64 containing meso-3,5-disubstituted phenyl groups was synthesized considering that the meta-substituted phenyl groups may induce weaker steric hindrance with the axial pyridyl ligand, as compared with wrapped and strapped porphyrin dyes. Thus, N1 was used as an electrolyte additive together with TBP. When optimized concentrations of 6 mM N1 and 0.5 M TBP were used for fabricating DSSCs based on XW64, enhanced photovoltaic performance was achieved, with JSC, VOC, and efficiency of 15.65 mA·cm-2, 0.701 V, and 7.35%, respectively, superior to those of the corresponding DSSCs without using the additives (JSC = 14.86 mA·cm-2, VOC = 0.599 V, and efficiency = 5.94%). The enhancement of JSC can be ascribed to the improved light-harvesting ability induced by the axially coordinated N1. Furthermore, the two additives also can be used to fabricate efficient solar cells based on the wrapped porphyrin dye XW42, achieving high efficiency of 10.3%, indicative of their general applicability in fabricating high-performance DSSCs. These results indicate that the simultaneous employment of the traditional TBP additive and a pyridyl ligand with light-harvesting ability in the electrolyte for the axial coordination to a porphyrin dye is a promising approach for developing efficient DSSCs.

Abstract
Electron transfer processes at the interfaces dictate the factors that improve the photovoltaic parameters, such as open-circuit voltage (Voc) and short-circuit current (Jsc), of a dye-sensitized solar cell device, besides selection of a set of suitable anode, dye, electrolyte, and cathode materials. An inefficient charge injection process at the dye-TiO2 interface and charge recombination at the TiO2-dye/electrolyte interface have detrimental effects on improving both Jsc and Voc. Hence, tailoring the factors that govern the improvement of Jsc and Voc will be an ideal approach to get the desired sensitizers with good device efficiencies. Squaraines are far-red-active zwitterionic dyes and have a high molar extinction coefficient along with unique aggregation properties due to the large dipole moment associated with them. Here, we report a series of unsymmetrical squaraine dyes, SQS1 to SQS6, with systematic variation of alkyl groups at the sp3-C and N-atoms of the indoline unit that is away from the anchoring group to control the dye-dye interactions on the TiO2 surface. The branched alkyl groups help in modulating the self-assembly of sensitizers on the TiO2 surface, besides passivating the surface that helps avoid the charge recombination processes. Light harvesting efficiency and cyclic voltammetry studies of dye-sensitized TiO2 electrodes indicate that the aggregation and charge hopping process between the dye molecules can be modulated, respectively, by systematically increasing the number of carbon atoms in the alkyl groups. Such a variation in the branched alkyl group helps enhance Voc from 672 (SQS1) to 718 mV (SQS6) and Jsc from 7.95 (SQS1) to 12.22 mA/cm2 (SQS6), with the device efficiency ranging from 3.82% to 6.23% without any coadsorbent. Dye SQS4 achieves the highest efficiency of 7.1% (Voc = 715 mV, Jsc = 13.05 mA/cm2) with coadsorbent chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA) using an iodine (I-/I3-) electrolyte compared to its analogues. An analysis of the incident photon-to-current efficiency profiles indicates that the major contribution to photocurrent generation is from the aggregated squaraine dyes on TiO2.

Abstract
Dye sensitized solar cells (DSSC) are considered one of the most promising photovoltaic technologies as an alternative to traditional silicon-based solar cells, for their compatibility with low-cost production methods, their peculiar optical and mechanical properties and the high indoor efficiency. Photosensitizers represent one of the most important components of a DSSC device and probably the most thoroughly investigated in the last twenty years, with thousands of dyes that have been proposed and tested for this kind of application. In this review we aimed to provide an overview of the three main classes of DSSC photosensitizers, namely ruthenium(II) polypyridyl complexes, Zn-porphyrin derivatives and metal-free organic dyes. After a brief introduction about the architecture and operational principles of a DSSC and the state of the art of the other main components of this type of device, we focused our discussion on photosensitizers. We have defined the numerous requirements DSSC photosensitizers should satisfy and have provided an overview of their historical development over the years; by examining specific dyes reported in the literature, we attempted to highlight the molecular design strategies that have been established for the optimization of their performance in real devices both in terms of efficiency (which recently reaches an outstanding 14.3%) and operational stability. Finally, we discussed, in the last section, the possible future developments of this intriguing technology.

Abstract
A series of phenothiazine based dyes (OMS1–3), comprising different conjugation lengths and numbers of electron deficient (cyanovinyl) moieties with cyanoacrylic acid as an anchor, have been synthesized. The dyes display broad UV-visible absorption, from 389 nm to 484 nm. The higher molar extinction coefficient and longer absorption peak are achieved as the conjugation length and numbers of electron deficient units increase. The cell performance based on these dyes exhibits efficiencies ranging from 0.68–4.00%, compared to a standard N719-based device (PCE = 7.49%) fabricated under similar conditions. Although the OMS3 dye has two electron deficient units between phenothiazine units, an insignificant electron trapping effect is observed. From the results, the OMS3 based cell exhibits the highest short circuit current (JSC) at 8.72 mA cm−2 and the highest open-circuit voltage (VOC) at 0.66 V, together with the best cell performance at 4.00%. Phenothiazine based dyes (OMS1–3), comprising different conjugation lengths, numbers of electron deficient (cyanovinyl) moieties have been synthesized. OMS3 dye has two cyanovinyl moieties between phenothiazine core exhibits the best cell performance at 4.00%.![]()

Abstract
In this article, hierarchical TiO2 microstructures (HM-TiO2) were synthesized by a simple solvothermal method adopting tetra-n-butyl titanate as the titanium source in a mixed solvent composed of N,N-dimethylformamide and acetic acid. Due to the high crystallinity and superior light-scattering ability, the resultant HM-TiO2 are advantageous as photoanodes for dye-sensitized solar cells. When assembled to the entire photovoltaic device with C101 dye as a sensitizer, the pure HM-TiO2-based solar cells showed an ultrahigh photovoltage up to 0.853 V. Finally, by employing the as-obtained HM-TiO2 as the scattering layer and optimizing the architecture of dye-sensitized solar cells, both higher photovoltage and incident photon-to-electron conversion efficiency value were harvested with respect to TiO2 nanoparticles-based dye-sensitized solar cells, resulting in a high power conversion efficiency of 9.79%. This work provides a promising strategy to develop photoanode materials with outstanding photoelectric conversion performance.
