Visualization of Sweat Fingerprints on Various Surfaces Using a Conjugated Polyelectrolyte

Strongly Fluorescent Conjugated Polymer Nanoparticles in Aqueous Colloidal Solution for Universal, Efficient and Effective Development of Sebaceous and Blood Fingerprints

Taking the same developing strategy for different types of latent fingerprints is helpful in improving the efficiency of criminal investigation. Here we advanced a new strategy based on amino-functionalized poly(p-phenylenevinylene) nanoparticles (PPV-brPEI NPs) in aqueous colloidal solution as the developing reagent. The desirable amino functionality and strong emission of NPs were simultaneously realized by adding branched polyethyleneimine (brPEI) during the process of thermal elimination of the PPV polymer precursor. The NPs were demonstrated to have negligible effects on the extraction of biological information from DNA. Using the PPV-brPEI NPs-soaked cotton pad, both latent sebaceous fingerprints (LSFPs) and latent blood fingerprints (LBFPs) can be effectively developed on different nonporous substrates. This strategy was highly sensitive and effective for aged, contaminated and moldy fingerprints. Additionally, the developed fingerprints could tolerate humidity environment and the alcohol atmosphere. The mechanism investigation suggests that interaction between PPV-brPEI NPs and sebum ingredients contributes to the development of LSFPs and interaction between PPV-brPEI NPs and proteins in blood contributes to the development of LBFPs, but the former is not as stable as the latter. This work provides a simple, environment/operator-friendly strategy for efficient fingerprint development, which is very promising for practical criminal investigations.

Fluorescence imaging of surface-versatile latent fingerprints at the second and third level using double ESIPT-based AIE fluorophore

The nano-aggregates of HPBI on both porous and non-porous surfaces provide fluorescent latent fingerprints with resolution up to the third level, which could be relocated on the tape.

Diazonium Gold Salts as Novel Surface Modifiers: What Have We Learned So Far?

The challenges of diazonium salts stabilization have been overcome by their isolation as metal salts such as tetrachloroaurate(III). The cleavage of molecular nitrogen from diazonium salts even at very low potential or on reducing surfaces by fine tuning the substituents on the phenyl ring expanded their applications as surface modifiers in forensic science, nanomedicine engineering, catalysis and energy. The robustness of the metal–carbon bonding produced from diazonium salts reduction has already opened an era for further applications. The integration of experimental and calculations in this field catalyzed its speedy progress. This review provides a narrative of the progress in this chemistry with stress on our recent contribution, identifies potential applications, and highlights the needs in this emerging field. For these reasons, we hope that this review paper serves as motivation for others to enter this developing field of surface modification originating from diazonium salts.

Functional Materials and Systems for Rewritable Paper

"Paper" has greatly contributed to the development and spread of civilization. Even in today's "digitalized" world, paper continues to play a key role in socioeconomic growth, as is evidenced by the growth in global paper consumption. Unfortunately, the use of paper has its cost in terms of the exhaustion of world's natural resources. Consequently, new, cost-effective technologies that preserve natural resources are required for this purpose. Functional materials have revolutionized the way people think about developing new technologies. Especially important in this regard are "smart reactive materials," which are capable of actively responding to external stimuli such as heat, light, mechanical stress, and specific molecular orientations. Moreover, functionalized chromogenic materials, which undergo reversible color switching upon external stimulation, have attracted great attention in the context of developing rewritable paper. Here, investigations of various materials and systems that are devised for use as rewritable paper are reviewed with the hope that the coverage will stimulate and guide future studies in this area.

Red-Emissive Carbon Dots for Fingerprints Detection by Spray Method: Coffee Ring Effect and Unquenched Fluorescence in Drying Process

Brightly red fluorescent carbon dots are synthesized hydrothermally and dissolved in diluted hydrochloric acid solution. Such carbon dots exhibit excitation-independent emission at about 620 nm with quantum yield over 10%, which is visible in daylight. After the carbon dots solution is sprayed to the fingerprints on various solid substrates and dried in air, clear fingerprints can be seen under an ultraviolet lamp and stay stable for 1 day. Detailed characterizations suggest that during the drying process, the coffee-ring effect and the electrostatic interactions between the carbon dots and the fingerprint residues prevent the typical aggregation-induced fluorescence quenching of carbon dots.
