Low Voltage Electrowetting on Ferroelectric PVDF-HFP Insulator with Highly Tunable Contact Angle Range

Development of Cyclic Tetrasiloxane Polymer as a High-Performance Dielectric and Hydrophobic Layer for Electrowetting Displays

Cyclic tetrasiloxane polymer (CTP) has recently garnered interest as a hydrophobic material with unique properties. This study aims to enhance the dielectric constant of CTP films by introducing excess Si-H groups and to explore the impact of synthesis and processing conditions on the resulting properties. The film demonstrates high hydrophobicity, with contact angles of 107° in air and 165° in n-decane, along with a notable dielectric constant of 5.1°. Furthermore, the CTP film displays reversible electrowetting behavior with low contact angle hysteresis (2°) and possesses good transparency (∼99%) and thermal stability. As such, the CTP film has significant potential as a material for the electric wetting of hydrophobic dielectric layers and may serve as a promising alternative in electrowetting applications.

Large tuning in the electrowetting behaviour on ferroelectric PVDF-HFP/Teflon AF bilayer

Electrowetting (EW) response on a dielectric depends on its permittivity value, Young contact angle and voltage amplitude. We present a large change in EW contact angle, from 163° to 80°, on the bilayer dielectric made up of ferroelectric PVDF-HFP with a thin layer of fluoropolymer. The thickness values of both layers were separately optimized for high effective capacitance essential for the large EW response. It reveals that the bilayer with ~ 500 nm thick PVDF-HFP layer and ~ 50 nm thin layer of Teflon results in the maximum value of effective dielectric constant, ε ≈ 8. Besides this gain, dc-voltage EW response exhibits hysteresis mainly due to polarization in the ferroelectric layer such that, hysteretic offset voltage was found to depend on the applied voltage amplitude and thickness of the dielectrics. Finally, bilayer was subjected to ac-voltage EW in silicone oil for ambient temperature ranging from - 25 to 70 °C. The consistent EW response in this ambient without any degradation/delamination of polymer surface confirmed the durability of the bilayer on the transparent ITO electrodes.

Configuration-Controllable Polymeric Nanovehicles Self-Assembled in Pixel Grids under an Electric Field

Polymeric nanovehicles have been widely applied in many fields, but during the process of preparation, it is still hard to reach the balance between precise structure control and mass production. In the present work, using industrial pixel grids as the macroscopic template, we applied dual effects of confinement and dielectric difference to speed up the self-assembly of polymeric nanovehicles, even to regulate the generated mesostructures and cargo loading. Within 2 min, a poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(d,l-lactide acid) (PEG-b-PDLLA) amphiphilic block copolymer layer was rapidly pushed off and broken down into uniform nanoparticles at 40 V. Hereinto, increasing volume of the outer aqueous phase in pixel grids favored the architectonic transformation of the generated nanovehicles from solid micelles with a diameter of 95 nm to hollow vesicles with a diameter of 232 nm. In particular, all the elements from the confinement cells to the preparation process can be completed via wet printing. Electric-field-induced pixel template technology is facile, cheap, controllable, and recyclable, and it is anticipated to promote continuous and bulk production of polymeric nanovehicles.

Electrically Controlled Localized Charge Trapping at Amorphous Fluoropolymer-Electrolyte Interfaces

Charge trapping is a long-standing problem in electrowetting on dielectric, causing reliability reduction and restricting its practical applications. Although this phenomenon is investigated macroscopically, the microscopic investigations are still lacking. In this work, the trapped charges are proven to be localized at the three-phase contact line (TPCL) region by using three detecting methods-local contact angle measurements, electrowetting (EW) probe, and Kelvin probe force microscopy. Moreover, it is demonstrated that this EW-assisted charge injection (EWCI) process can be utilized as a simple and low-cost method to deposit charges on fluoropolymer surfaces. Charge densities near the TPCL up to 0.46 mC m^-2 and line widths of the deposited charge ranging from 20 to 300 µm are achieved by the proposed EWCI method. Particularly, negative charge densities do not degrade even after a "harsh" testing with a water droplet on top of the sample surfaces for 12 h, as well as after being treated by water vapor for 3 h. These findings provide an approach for applications which desire stable and controllable surface charges.

The Effect of the Terminal Functional Groups on Fluoropolymer on Electrowetting Device Performance

Electrowetting on dielectric (EWOD) devices were fabricated using two hydrophobic organic fluoropolymers, comprising CYTOP (a product name) having different chemical structures only at the terminal functional groups. These devices were subsequently characterized by applying a range of direct current (DC) voltages. The data demonstrated that the EWOD performance was dramatically improved upon incorporating a CYTOP polymer having highly polar terminal functional groups, as compared to a polymer having terminal groups with lower polarity. The new finding about the positive effect of highly polar terminal functional groups on the enhancement of EWOD was exhibited through various careful experiments, changing only the quantitative amount of polar terminal functional groups while keeping other factors constant (thickness, substrate, etc.).

P(VDF-TrFE)/PMMA Blended Films with Enhanced Electrowetting Responses and Superior Energy Storage Performance

P(VDF-TrFE) (vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoroethylene)/PMMA (PVT/PMMA) blended films synthesized through a facile solution-blending method show outstanding performance for practical electrowetting and energy storage applications. The van der Waals forces and dipolar interactions in neighboring P(VDF-TrFE) and PMMA chains, together with the suppressed free volume (or defect) are critical to the significantly-enhanced electrical properties. Typical, Teflon-covered P(VDF-TrFE)/PMMA blended film exhibits a high dielectric constant of 13 with low dielectric loss (~0.05) at 100 Hz and a large initial contact angle of 122°. Its electrowetting response with a contact angle modulation of 50° in air and low contact angle hysteresis demonstrate that it is promising for low-voltage electrowetting applications. Furthermore, with an energy density of 11.8 J/cm³, approximately double that of pure P(VDF-TrFE), PVT/PMMA blended films containing 20 wt % PMMA turn out to be superior materials for energy storage applications, due to their significantly-enhanced polarization and reduced remnant polarization.

Significantly enhanced dielectric and hydrophobic properties of SiO2@MgO/PMMA composite films

In this article, we provide a feasible method to prepare high-dielectric-constant hydrophobic composite films, which show potential application as the insulator layer in electrowetting devices.
