Retarding Crystallization during Facile Single Coating of NaCl-Incorporated Precursor Solution for Efficient Large-Area Uniform Perovskite Solar Cells

Appealing perspectives of the structural, electronic, elastic and optical properties of LiRCl3 (R = Be and Mg) halide perovskites: a DFT study

To enhance the effectiveness of materials, we are motivated to investigate lithium-based halide perovskites LiRCl3 (where R = Be and Mg) using first-principles techniques based on density functional theory (DFT), implemented in the WIEN2K code. In this study, the research makes use of the WIEN2K simulation code, employing the plane-wave and self-consistent (PWSCF) approach. The cut-off energy, responsible for distinguishing core and valence states, is established at -6.0 Ry. To guarantee well-converged solutions with 2000 K points, parameters of RMT × Kmax = 7.0 are selected, where RMT represents the smallest muffin-tin radius and Kmax denotes the plane wave cut-off. Convergence is determined to be attained when the overall energy of the system remains unchanged during self-consistent calculations, reaching a threshold of 0.001 Ry. We observe structural stability of these materials using the Birch-Murnaghan fit, tolerance factor and formation energy. The tolerance factor for LiMgCl3 and LiBeCl3 are 1.03 and 0.857, while the formation energy for LiMgCl3 and LiBeCl3 are -7.39 eV and -8.92 eV respectively, confirming these to be stable structurally. We evaluate the electronic properties of the current materials, shedding light on their nature, by using the suggested modified Becke-Johnson potential. It turns out that they are indirect insulators, with calculated band gaps of 4.02 and 4.07 eV for LiMgCl3 and LiBeCl3, respectively. For both materials, we also calculate the density of states (DOS), and our findings regarding the band gap energies are consistent with the band structure. It is observed that both materials exhibit transparency to low-energy photons, with absorption and optical conduction occurring in the UV range. These compounds are mechanically stable, according to the elastic investigation, however LiBeCl3 shows higher resistance to compressive and shear loads as well as resistance to shape change. On the other hand, LiMgCl3 exhibits weaker resistance to changes in volume. Furthermore, we discovered that none of the compounds are entirely isotropic, and specifically, LiMgCl3 and LiBeCl3 are brittle in nature. These materials appear to be potential candidates for use in optoelectronic devices based on our analysis of their optical properties. Our findings may provide comprehensive insight, invoking experimental studies for further investigations.

Collaborative Passivation for Dual Charge Transporting Layers Based on 4-(chloromethyl)benzonitrile Additive toward Efficient and Stable Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells

Poor carrier transport capacity and numerous surface defects of charge transporting layers (CTLs), coupled with misalignment of energy levels between perovskites and CTLs, impact photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE) of inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs) profoundly. Herein, a collaborative passivation strategy is proposed based on 4-(chloromethyl) benzonitrile (CBN) as a solution additive for fabrication of both [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methylester (PCBM) and poly(triarylamine) (PTAA) CTLs. This additive can improve wettability of PTAA and reduce the agglomeration of PCBM particles, which enhance the PCE and device stability of the PSCs. As a result, a PCE exceeding 20% with a remarkable short circuit current of 23.9 mA cm^-2 , and an improved fill factor of 81% is obtained for the CBN- modified inverted PSCs. Devices maintain 80% and 70% of the initial PCE after storage under 30% and 85% humidity ambient conditions for 1000 h without encapsulation, as well as negligible light state PCE loss. This strategy demonstrates feasibility of the additive engineering to improve interfacial contact between the CTLs and perovskites for fabrication of efficient and stable inverted PSCs.

Tetrafluoroborate-Induced Reduction in Defect Density in Hybrid Perovskites through Halide Management

Hybrid-perovskite-based optoelectronic devices are demonstrating unprecedented growth in performance, and defect passivation approaches are highly promising routes to further improve properties. Here, the effect of the molecular ion BF₄ ^- , introduced via methylammonium tetrafluoroborate (MABF₄ ) in a surface treatment for MAPbI₃ perovskite, is reported. Optical spectroscopy characterization shows that the introduction of tetrafluoroborate leads to reduced non-radiative charge-carrier recombination with a reduction in first-order recombination rate from 6.5 × 10⁶ to 2.5 × 10⁵ s^-1 in BF₄ ^- -treated samples, and a consequent increase in photoluminescence quantum yield by an order of magnitude (from 0.5 to 10.4%). ¹⁹ F, ¹¹ B, and ¹⁴ N solid-state NMR is used to elucidate the atomic-level mechanism of the BF₄ ^- additive-induced improvements, revealing that the BF₄ ^- acts as a scavenger of excess MAI by forming MAI-MABF₄ cocrystals. This shifts the equilibrium of iodide concentration in the perovskite phase, thereby reducing the concentration of interstitial iodide defects that act as deep traps and non-radiative recombination centers. These collective results allow us to elucidate the microscopic mechanism of action of BF₄ ^- .

A Sodium Chloride Modification of SnO2 Electron Transport Layers to Enhance the Performance of Perovskite Solar Cells

A sodium chloride modification was applied where different amounts of sodium chloride was physically blended in a tin oxide colloid solution to passivate the interface between the electron transport layer (ETL) and perovskite layer and improve the performance of perovskite solar cells. Sodium chloride-modified tin oxide was utilized as the electron transport material to fabricate perovskite solar cells. It was found that sodium chloride-modified tin oxide as an ETL could considerably enhance the performance of the device compared to pristine tin oxide. The power conversion efficiency of the perovskite solar cell displayed 8.8% remarkable improvement from 18.7 ± 0.4% to 20.3 ± 0.3% on average and 9.5% improvement from 18.9 to 20.7% in champion devices because of the considerable enhancement of the fill factor when 25 mM sodium chloride-modified tin oxide as the ETL was used in comparison with pristine tin oxide.

Influence of Additives on the In Situ Crystallization Dynamics of Methyl Ammonium Lead Halide Perovskites

Understanding the kinetics of the crystallization process for organometal halide perovskite formation is critical in determining the crystalline, nanoscale morphology and therefore the electronic properties of the films produced during thin film formation from solution. In this work, in situ grazing incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS) and optical microscopy measurements are used to investigate the processes of nucleation and growth of pristine mixed halide perovskite (MAPbI3-x Cl x ) crystalline films deposited by bar coating at 60 °C, with and without additives in the solution. A small amount of 1,8-diiodooctane (DIO) and hydriodic acid (HI) added to MAPbI3-x Cl x is shown to increase the numbers of nucleation centers promoting heterogeneous nucleation and accelerate and modify the size of nuclei during nucleation and growth. A generalized formation mechanism is derived from the overlapping parameters obtained from real-time GISAXS and optical microscopy, which revealed that during nucleation, perovskite precursors cluster before becoming the nuclei that function as elemental units for subsequent formation of perovskite crystals. Additive-free MAPbI3-x Cl x follows reaction-controlled growth, in contrast with when DIO and HI are present, and it is highly possible that the growth then follows a hindered diffusion-controlled mechanism. These results provide important details of the crystallization mechanisms occurring and will help to develop greater control over perovskite films produced.

Morphology Evolution of a High-Efficiency PSC by Modulating the Vapor Process

The morphological quality of the photoactive layer is the key component affecting the performance metrics of a photovoltaic device. Therefore, fine adjustment of the crystallization dynamics is urgently required. By manipulating the amount of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) remaining in the spin-coated perovskite films during the annealing treatment, an obvious morphological evolution arises. The crystallization kinetics is significantly altered due to the formation of intermediate phases and the variation of DMSO vapor pressure via producing the semienclosed space with a covering. On the one hand, the obviously formed intermediate phase MA₂ Pb₃ I₈ (DMSO)₂ retards the crystallization process. On the other hand, the DMSO vapor in the semienclosed space intrigues the recrystallization process and results in Ostwald ripening to produce large-aspect-ratio grains with fewer defect states, decreased carrier doping, and longer carrier lifetimes. Thus, nonradiative processes are greatly suppressed. Besides, combined with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurement and the surface energy of MAI- and PbI-terminated surface model calculated by density functional theory, the defect states are identified and the causes of Pb⁰ defect states are explained. Using this strategy, a high power conversion efficiency of 20.09% is achieved based on MAPbI₃ photovoltaic solar cell, and the long-term ambient shelf and thermal stability are obviously improved.

Recent Advancements and Challenges for Low-Toxicity Perovskite Materials

Lead-based organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite materials have been developed for advanced optoelectronic applications. However, the toxicity of lead and the chemical instability of lead-based perovskite materials have so far been demonstrated to be an overwhelming challenge. The discovery of perovskite materials based on low-toxicity elements, such as Sn, Bi, Sb, Ge, and Cu, with superior optoelectronic properties provides alternative approaches to realize high-performance perovskite optoelectronics. In this review, recent advances in the aspects of low-toxicity perovskite solar cells, photodetectors, light-emitting diodes, and thermoelectric devices are highlighted. The antioxidation stability of metal cation and the crystallization process of the low-toxicity perovskite materials are discussed. In the last part, the outlook toward addressing various issues requiring further attention in the development of low-toxicity perovskite materials is outlined.

Segregation-free bromine-doped perovskite solar cells for IoT applications

Perovskite solar cells have attracted much attention as next-generation solar cells because of their high efficiency and low fabrication costs. Moreover, perovskite solar cells are a promising candidate for indoor energy harvesting. We investigated the effect of bandgap tuning on the characteristics of triple cation-based perovskite solar cells under fluorescent lamp illumination. According to the current density-voltage curves, perovskite solar cells with a wider bandgap than the conventional one exhibited improved open-circuit voltage without sacrificing short-circuit current density under fluorescent lamp illumination. Moreover, the wider bandgap perovskite films including a large amount of bromine in the composition did not show phase segregation, which can degrade the photovoltaic performance of perovskite solar cells, after fluorescent lamp illumination. Our results demonstrate the facile strategy to improve the performance of perovskite solar cells under ambient lighting and great potential of perovskite solar cells for indoor applications such as power sources for the internet of things.

The role of a vapor-assisted solution process on tailoring the chemical composition and morphology of mixed-halide perovskite solar cells

Herein, we report a modified two-step method to construct a uniform and pinhole-free polycrystalline perovskite film with large grains up to the microscale using lead mixed-halide (PbI₂–PbCl₂) precursor solutions to guarantee the device functioning.

BiVO4 Photoanode with Exposed (040) Facets for Enhanced Photoelectrochemical Performance

A BiVO₄ photoanode with exposed (040) facets was prepared to enhance its photoelectrochemical performance. The exposure of the (040) crystal planes of the BiVO₄ film was induced by adding NaCl to the precursor solution. The as-prepared BiVO₄ photoanode exhibits higher solar-light absorption and charge-separation efficiency compared to those of an anode prepared without adding NaCl. To our knowledge, the photocurrent density (1.26 mA cm^-2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE) of as-prepared BiVO₄ photoanode is the highest according to the reports for bare BiVO₄ films under simulated AM1.5G solar light, and the incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency is above 35% at 400 nm. The photoelectrochemical (PEC) water-splitting performance was also dramatically improved with a hydrogen evolution rate of 9.11 μmol cm^-2 h^-1, which is five times compared with the BiVO₄ photoanode prepared without NaCl (1.82 μmol cm^-2 h^-1). Intensity-modulated photocurrent spectroscopy and transient photocurrent measurements show a higher charge-carrier-transfer rate for this photoanode. These results demonstrate a promising approach for the development of high-performance BiVO₄ photoanodes which can be used for efficient PEC water splitting and degradation of organic pollutants.

Hydrazinium Salt as Additive To Improve Film Morphology and Carrier Lifetime for High-Efficiency Planar-Heterojunction Perovskite Solar Cells via One-Step Method

One-step solution process is the simplest method to fabricate organic-inorganic metal halide perovskite thin films, which however does not work well when employed in the planar-heterojunction (PHJ) solar cells due to the generally poor film morphology. Here we show that hydrazinium chloride can be used as an additive in the precursor solution to produce perovskite films featuring higher coverage and better crystallinity. The light absorption ability and charge carrier lifetime are both significantly improved accordingly. Under the optimal additive ratio, the average power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the inverted PHJ perovskite solar cells greatly increases by as much as 70%, and the champion device shows a satisfying PCE of 12.66%. These results suggest that N₂H₅Cl is a promising additive for fabricating high-efficiency perovskite solar cells via one-step method, which could be of interest in the future commercial solar cell industry.

Magnetic Field-Assisted Perovskite Film Preparation for Enhanced Performance of Solar Cells

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are promising low-cost photovoltaic technologies with high power conversion efficiency (PCE). The crystalline quality of perovskite materials is crucial to the photovoltaic performance of the PSCs. Herein, a simple approach is introduced to prepare high-quality CH₃NH₃PbI₃ perovskite films with larger crystalline grains and longer carriers lifetime by using magnetic field to control the nucleation and crystal growth. The fabricated planar CH₃NH₃PbI₃ solar cells have an average PCE of 17.84% and the highest PCE of 18.56% using an optimized magnetic field at 80 mT. In contrast, the PSCs fabricated without the magnetic field give an average PCE of 15.52% and the highest PCE of 16.72%. The magnetic field action produces an ordered arrangement of the perovskite ions, improving the crystallinity of the perovskite films and resulting in a higher PCE.

Improved Reproducibility for Perovskite Solar Cells with 1 cm2 Active Area by a Modified Two-Step Process

With rapid progress in recent years, organohalide perovskite solar cells (PSC) are promising candidates for a new generation of highly efficient thin-film photovoltaic technologies, for which up-scaling is an essential step toward commercialization. In this work, we propose a modified two-step method to deposit the CH₃NH₃PbI₃ (MAPbI₃) perovskite film that improves the uniformity, photovoltaic performance, and repeatability of large-area perovskite solar cells. This method is based on the commonly used two-step method, with one additional process involving treating the perovskite film with concentrated methylammonium iodide (MAI) solution. This additional treatment is proved to be helpful for tailoring the residual PbI₂ level to an optimal range that is favorable for both optical absorption and inhibition of recombination. Scanning electron microscopy and photoluminescence image analysis further reveal that, compared to the standard two-step and one-step methods, this method is very robust for achieving uniform and pinhole-free large-area films. This is validated by the photovoltaic performance of the prototype devices with an active area of 1 cm², where we achieved the champion efficiency of ∼14.5% and an average efficiency of ∼13.5%, with excellent reproducibility.
