Insights into the Formation and Properties of Templated Dual Mesoporous Titania with Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity

Plant Photocatalysts: Photoinduced Oxidation and Reduction Abilities of Plant Leaf Ashes under Solar Light

Plant leaf ashes were obtained via the high temperature calcination of the leaves of various plants, such as sugarcane, couchgrass, bracteata, garlic sprout, and the yellowish leek. Although the photosynthesis systems in plant leaves cannot exist after calcination, minerals in these ashes were found to exhibit photochemical activities. The samples showed solar light photocatalytic oxidation activities sufficient to degrade methylene blue dye. They were also shown to possess intrinsic dehydrogenase-like activities in reducing the colorless electron acceptor 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride to a red formazan precipitate under solar light irradiation. The possible reasons behind these two unreported phenomena were also investigated. These ashes were characterized using a combination of physicochemical techniques. Moreover, our findings exemplify how the soluble and insoluble minerals in plant leaf ashes can be synergistically designed to yield next-generation photocatalysts. It may also lead to advances in artificial photosynthesis and photocatalytic dehydrogenase.

Titanium(IV) Surface Complexes Bearing Chelating Catecholato Ligands for Enhanced Band-Gap Reduction

Protonolysis reactions between dimethylamido titanium(IV) catecholate [Ti(CAT)(NMe₂)₂]₂ and neopentanol or tris(tert-butoxy)silanol gave catecholato-bridged dimers [(Ti(CAT)(OCH₂tBu)₂)(HNMe₂)]₂ and [Ti(CAT){OSi(OtBu)₃}₂(HNMe₂)₂]₂, respectively. Analogous reactions using the dimeric dimethylamido titanium(IV) (3,6-di-tert-butyl)catecholate [Ti(CATtBu₂-3,6)(NMe₂)₂]₂ yielded the monomeric Ti(CATtBu₂-3,6)(OCH₂tBu)₂(HNMe₂)₂ and Ti(CATtBu₂-3,6)[OSi(OtBu)₃]₂(HNMe₂)₂. The neopentoxide complex Ti(CATtBu₂-3,6)(OCH₂tBu)₂(HNMe₂)₂ engaged in further protonolysis reactions with Si-OH groups and was consequentially used for grafting onto mesoporous silica KIT-6. Upon immobilization, the surface complex [Ti(CATtBu₂-3,6)(OCH₂tBu)₂(HNMe₂)₂]@[KIT-6] retained the bidentate chelating geometry of the catecholato ligand. This convergent grafting strategy was compared with a sequential and an aqueous approach, which gave either a mixture of bidentate chelating species with a bipodally anchored Ti(IV) center along with other physisorbed surface species or not clearly identifiable surface species. Extension of the convergent and aqueous approaches to anatase mesoporous titania (m-TiO₂) enabled optical and electronic investigations of the corresponding surface species, revealing that the band-gap reduction is more pronounced for the bidentate chelating species (convergent approach) than for that obtained via the aqueous approach. The applied methods include X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, and solid-state UV/vis spectroscopy. The energy-level alignment for the surface species from the aqueous approach, calculated from experimental data, accounts for the well-known type II excitation mechanism, whereas the findings indicate a distinct excitation mechanism for the bidentate chelating surface species of the material [Ti(CATtBu₂-3,6)(OCH₂tBu)₂(HNMe₂)₂]@[m-TiO₂].

Preparation of amine functionalized g-C3N4@H/SMOF NCs with visible light photocatalytic characteristic for 4-nitrophenol degradation from aqueous solution

At ambience temperature, a facile and large-scale sonochemical synthesis route was used to synthesize graphitic carbon nitride@[Ti₄C₂₄H₃₉N₃O₂₉] metal-organic framework nanocomposites (g-C₃N₄-X@^YTi-MIL125-NH₂ NCs, where X and Y stood for the weight percentages of g - C₃N₄ and the synthesis method of Ti-MIL125-NH₂, respectively) having 2-Amino-1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid (2-ATA) ligand with amine functional free groups. The obtained NCs were characterized by FT-IR, PXRD, FE-SEM, BET, UV-DRS, PL, EIS, and zeta potential. Moreover, g-C₃N₄-X@^YTi-MIL125-NH₂ capability to eliminate 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) contaminant from water via visible light illumination was explored. Our synthesized NCs under a facile, green ultrasonic technique (i.e. g-C₃N₄-30@^STi-MIL125-NH₂) had a higher percentage of degradation than those from hydrothermal technique (i.e. g-C₃N₄-30@^HTi-MIL125-NH₂) with degradation percentages of 75% and 57%, respectively, which resulted in effective mass transfer and separation of photo - generated charge carriers. Additionally, this higher percentage of degradation could be attributed to the larger surface area and unique morphology of the ultrasonically synthesized particles with higher homogeneity and better and non-agglomerated distribution. Furthermore, excellent reusability and stability were observed for g-C₃N₄-30@^STi-MIL125-NH₂. We also explored the role of some scavengers in the degradation procedures to investigate the effect of active species. The experimental results were used to describe the suggested mechanism capability for improved photocatalysis.

Isomerization and dismutation pathways are identified as the main routes for the hydrodesulfurization of 4,6-dimethylbenzothiophene over a MoS₂@mesoporous TiO₂ catalyst.
