Abstract
BACKGROUND Phenolic compounds (PCs) are a class of polar aromatic pollutants with high toxicity in environmental water. Generally the efficient sample preparation is essential for the quantification of ultra-trace target PCs in real water sample before appropriative instrumental analysis. SPME is a convenient, solvent-free and time-saving miniaturized technique and has been recognized as a green alternative to conventional extraction techniques. In SPME, however, commercial fused-silica fibers are limited to the fragility, operation temperature, extraction capacity and selectivity as well as lifetime. Therefore, the development of new SPME fibers is always needed to overcome such limitations. RESULTS We presented a novel top-down strategy for in situ construction of vertically oriented hexagonal sulfate intercalated NiCr layered double hydroxide nanosheet arrays (NiCr LDHs-SO4 NSAs) on the Nichrome (NiCr) substrate by hydrothermal treatment in NaOH solution containing (NH4)2S2O8. The results showed that much shorter hydrothermal time was needed for the construction of NiCr@NiCr LDHs-SO4 NSAs fiber in the presence of (NH4)2S2O8. Moreover, the unique NiCr LDHs-SO4 NSAs coating offered open access structure, and thereby more available surface area for adsorption. The resulting fiber exhibited better extraction efficiency for phenolic compounds (PCs), faster mass transfer rate, higher mechanical stability, and longer service life than original NiCr@NiCr LDHs NSs fiber and typical commercially fused-silica fibers. After optimizing conditions, the SPME-HPLC-UV method demonstrated a linear range from 0.05 μg L-1 to 200 μg L-1 with LODs of 0.015-0.156 μg L-1 (S/N = 3) and LOQs of 0.048-0.498 μg L-1 (S/N = 10), as well as good repeatability (3.06%-5.22%) and fiber-to-fiber reproducibility (4.32%-6.49%). SIGNIFICANCE The developed SPME-HPLC-UV method with the constructed fiber was applied to the preconcentration and detection of different types of PCs in real water samples, showing satisfactory recoveries ranging from 86.20% to 107.8% with RSDs of 3.18%-6.69%. This study provides a new strategy for in situ construction of bimetallic hydroxides and their derived nanocomposite coatings on the NiCr fiber substrate in practical SPME application.

Abstract
Here, two-dimensional (2D) nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets (CNSs) were prepared through carbonizing MOFs (ZIF-8) in-situ grown using graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) as a template. The developed ZIF-8 CNS was then used as solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber coating for beneficiation of five biomarkers in exhalation of patients with esophageal cancer and in gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) for determination. The ZIF-8 CNS fiber exhibits satisfactory enrichment factors (3490-5631), wide linearity (5-1000 μg L-1), and low detection limits (0.26-0.96 μg L-1). The relative standard deviations (RSDs) for six replicate extractions of the same ZIF-8 CNS fiber were between 2.0-3.9% (intra-day) and 2.8-5.2% (inter-day). The reproducibility of three fibers prepared by the same approach was in the range 6.8-12.3% (RSD). The developed ZIF-8 CNS fiber can persist in 120 SPME cycles with no prominent loss of extraction efficiency and precision. The high enrichment factors of the 2D ZIF-8 CNS coatings are attributed to the high specific surface area, ultrathin thickness, and nano-pore or interlayer channels; moreover, nitrogen doping also endows the π system with a strong electron absorption ability, which will enhance the π-π interaction between the ZIF-8 CNS and the aromatic ring. Ultimately, the self-made ZIF-8 CNS-coated SPME fiber was applied to the analysis of exhaled breath samples. The recoveries of spiked analytes are between 84 and 105%.

Abstract
Evaluation of the hydrophobic/hydrophilic interaction individually between the sorbent and target compounds in sample pretreatment is a big challenge. Herein, a smart titanium substrate with switchable surface wettability was fabricated and selected as the sorbent for the solution. The titanium wires and meshes were fabricated by simple hydrothermal etching and chemical modification so as to construct the superhydrophilic and superhydrophobic surfaces. The micro/nano hierarchical structures of the formed TiO2 nanoparticles in situ on the surface of Ti substrates exhibited the switchable surface wettability. After UV irradiation for about 15.5 h, the superhydrophobic substrates became superhydrophilic. The morphologies and element composition of the wires were observed by SEM, EDS, and XRD, and their surface wettabilities were measured using the Ti mesh by contact angle goniometer. The pristine hydrophilic wire, the resulting superhydrophilic wire, superhydrophobic wire, and the UV-irradiated superhydrophilic wire were filled into a stainless tube as the sorbent instead of the sample loop of a six-port valve for on-line in-tube solid-phase microextraction. When employed in conjunction with HPLC, four kinds of wires were comparatively applied to extract six estrogens in water samples. The optimal conditions for the preconcentration and separation of target compounds were obtained with a sample volume of 60 mL, an injection rate of 2 mL/min, a desorption time of 2 min, and a mobile phase of acetonile/water (47/53, v/v). The results showed that both the superhydrophilic wire and UV-irradiated wire had the highest extraction efficiency for the polar compounds of estrogens with the enrichment factors in the range of 20-177, while the superhydrophobic wire exhibited the highest extraction efficiency for the non-polar compounds of five polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). They demonstrated that extraction efficiency was mainly dependent on the surface wettability of the sorbent and the polarity of the target compounds, which was in accordance with the molecular theory of like dissolves like.

Degradation of Tetracycline on SiO2-TiO2-C Aerogel Photocatalysts under Visible Light. MATERIALS 2022; 15:ma15051963. Abstract
SiO2-TiO2-C aerogel photocatalysts with different carbon loadings were synthesized by using sol-gel chemistry. The anatase crystal and nonmetal carbon dopant were introduced during the sol preparation and formed by hydrothermal treatment, which can simultaneously enhance the adsorption ability and visible light photo-activity. A high surface area (759 g cm−3) SiO2-TiO2-C aerogel composite can remove up to 80% tetracycline hydrochloride within 180 min under visible light. The characterization of the gel structures shows that the homogeneous dispersion of O, Si, Ti and C in the skeleton, indicating that hydrothermal synthesis could provide a very feasible way for the preparation of composite materials. n(C):n(Ti) molar ratio of 3.5 gives the best catalytic performance of the hybrid aerogel, and the cyclic test still confirms over 60% degradation activity after seven use cycles. All catalysis reaction followed the pseudo-first-order rate reaction with high correlation coefficient. The electrons and holes in the compound could be effectively restrained with doping proper amount of C, and ESR results indicate that the oxidation process was dominated by the hydroxyl radical (•OH) and superoxide radical (•O2−) generated in the system.

Abstract
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), as a major source that significantly increase the risk of developing lung cancer, severely jeopardize public health in modern society. The analysis of PAHs and their metabolites (hydroxylated PAHs, OH-PAHs) is important for biomonitoring and exposure assessment. However, due to the difference in their physico-chemical properties and matrix interference, realizing high-performance extraction of both PAHs and OH-PAHs is still a challenge. Herein, a nickel-doped hierarchical porous carbon (Ni/HPC) is synthesized by carbonizing the polystyrene (PS) infiltrated metal-organic frameworks (MOF-74(Ni)). The obtained Ni/HPC exhibits hierarchical pores and evenly distributed Ni atoms, providing efficient diffusion pathways and adsorption sites. The custom Ni/HPC-coated solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber shows superior enrichment capabilities for PAHs and their metabolites under various interfering conditions, verifying its practicability in real sample analysis. The proposed method provides a new strategy to synthesize carbon-based adsorbents that achieves matrix-resistant enrichment of PAHs and OH-PAHs, which simplifies the related sample preparation process for environmental analysis and clinical diagnosis.

Abstract
Two kinds of TiO2 nanowires (TiO2NWs) with different orientation were in-situ grown on Ti substrates by controlling temperature and time during the hydrothermal process. The adsorption performance was evaluated by using typical aromatic compounds as model analytes coupled to HPLC with UV detection. The results demonstrated that the TiO2NWs coating grown at higher temperature within longer time had better affinity towards PAHs. For this purpose, the key experimental factors affecting the adsorption performance of the TiO2NWs coating fabricated at 200 °C for 10 h were further investigated and optimized for the extraction of PAHs. Under the optimized conditions, the proposed method presented linear responses in the concentration ranges of 0.05 to 200 μg·L-1 PAHs with correlation coefficients more than 0.998. LODs (S/N=3) were 0.008 to 0.034 μg·L-1. Moreover, RSDs for the single fiber repeatability of the intra-day and the inter-day analyses were less than 5.6% (n=5) and 5.8%, respectively. RSDs for the fiber-to-fiber reproducibility were between 5.1% and 6.5%. Finally, the proposed method was successfully applied to the selective preconcentration and determination of trace PAHs in environmental water samples. In addition, The fabricated Ti fiber can be used at least 200 times due to its high mechanical and chemical stability.

Abstract
In this work, a photoelectrochemical (PEC) glucose biosensor was synthesized on the basis of a type of Au@C/TiO2 composite by using an unsophisticated secondary hydrothermal strategy. The compounded Au@C/TiO2 material was characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, UV-vis, and XPS to identify the composition and the purity of the phase. Glucose oxidase (GODx) was immobilized on the Au@C/TiO2. The PEC biosensor presented satisfactory stability and outstanding reproducibility. The range and the sensitivity of the linear measurement were 0.1–1.6 mM and 29.76 μA mM−1 cm−2, respectively, and the detection limit was low (0.049 mM). The GODx/Au@C/TiO2/FTO biosensor presented excellent efficiency in detecting glucose, suggesting the great potential application of this synthesized material in PEC biosensors. In this work, a photoelectrochemical (PEC) glucose biosensor was synthesized on the basis of a type of Au@C/TiO2 composite by using an unsophisticated secondary hydrothermal strategy.![]()

Abstract
Oriented zinc oxide nanosheets (ZnONSs) were directly grown on pretreated nickel-titanium alloy (NiTi) fiber substrates without a traditional seeding layer of ZnO by electrochemical deposition for the first time. The fiber coatings were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry. Direct growth of ZnONSs on the NiTi fiber substrate was dependent on the type of zinc salt. The adsorption performance of the ZnONSs coatings was evaluated using representative aromatic compounds as model analytes together with high performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection. The as-prepared fiber shows higher extraction capability for the selected polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) than for ultraviolet filters in water samples, and better extraction selectivity for PAHs. For this purpose, the important experimental parameters were optimized for the extraction of PAHs. Under the optimized conditions, the calibration curves are linear in the range of 0.03-200 μg L-1 with correlation coefficients greater than 0.999. Limits of detection ranged from 0.011 μg L-1 to 0.082 μg L-1. Intra-day and inter-day relative standard deviations (RSDs) of the developed method with a single fiber ranged from 2.69% to 4.18% and from 4.44% to 5.40%, respectively. RSDs for the fiber-to-fiber reproducibility varied between 5.57% and 7.66%. The developed method was successfully applied for selective preconcentration and determination of trace PAHs in five real water samples. Relative recoveries varied from 84.5% to 104% with RSDs between 1.65% and 8.30%. Furthermore, the as-prepared fiber is highly stable.

Abstract
Nickel-titanium oxide nanotubes (NiTiONTs), nanoparticles, and nanopores were in situ grown on NiTi fiber substrates by controlling anodization parameters. The adsorption performance of different bimetallic oxide nanostructures was evaluated using typical aromatic compounds including chlorophenols, phthalic acid esters, ultraviolet filters (UVFs), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) coupled to HPLC-UV. The results clearly indicate that these NiTiO nanostructures show good extraction capability for UVFs and PAHs. The extraction performance of UVFs and PAHs greatly depends on the surface morphologies and sizes of the grown NiTiO nanostructures along with their elemental compositions. Compared with NiTiO nanoparticle and nanopore coatings, the longer well-aligned NiTiONT coating exhibits better extraction capability and selectivity for PAHs than for UVFs. Therefore, the extraction parameters of the NiTi@NiTiONT fiber for PAHs were investigated and optimized. Under optimized conditions, the proposed method was linear in the range 0.05-200 μg L-1 with correlation coefficients above 0.999. Limits of detection were between 0.008 and 0.124 μg L-1. Relative standard deviations (RSDs) of the intra-day and the inter-day analyses with the single fiber varied from 4.09 to 6.33%. RSDs for fiber-to-fiber reproducibility of the proposed method with five fibers prepared in different batches were between 5.75 and 7.43%. The applicability of the proposed method was investigated by the enrichment and determination of target PAHs in environmental water samples and relative recoveries of 84.5 ± 6.5 - 116 ± 7.8% were achieved. Notably, the prepared fiber was stable up to 250 times. Graphical abstract.

Abstract
Exploring the presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in aquatic environment is an important task. Metal-organic frameworks (MOF) are commonly used as sorbents for enriching PAHs but their crystal synthesis, sorbent preparation and robustness remain challenging. In the present study, under mild conditions, a novel sheathed MOF fiber coating was fabricated via in situ heteroepitaxial growth of copper-2,5-diaminoterephthalate (Cu-DAT) crystals and subsequent polyimide (PI) sheath. The copper hydroxide nanotubes were first synthesized on the copper wire to provide a substrate for further in situ heteroepitaxial Cu-DAT growth, and the coating was then sheathed with PI via a simple dip-coating procedure. The well-ranged copper hydroxide nanotubes, the unique adsorption property of Cu-DAT, and the PI sheath, the prepared fiber all contributed to a successful solid-phase microextraction (SPME) device for detecting PAHs. Results demonstrated that the SPME methods using the novel fiber possessed great sensitivity, wide linear range, good reproducibility, and the robustness was significantly improved with PI sheath. The novel SPME material was successfully applied for detection of PAHs in river water samples and in vivo detection of PAHs in fish dorsal muscle. In general, this study explored an effective and convenient method to prepare high-efficient MOF-based SPME fiber for PAHs analysis in complex environmental water samples and living organisms via in situ growth and polymer sheath.

Abstract
Thirteen carbon materials comprising commercial activated carbons and lab-made materials (activated carbons, hydrochars, and low-T and high-T activated hydrochars) were assayed as sorbent coatings in bar adsorptive microextration (BAμE) to monitor trace levels of ten common pharmaceutical compounds (PhCs) in environmental water matrices including surface water, seawater, tap water, and wastewater. Polar and nonpolar pharmaceuticals were selected, sulfamethoxazole, triclosan, carbamazepine, diclofenac, mefenamic acid, 17-α-ethinylestradiol, 17-β-estradiol, estrone, gemfibrozil, and clofibric acid, as model compounds to cover distinct therapeutic classes. Despite having a less-developed porosity, data showed that "in-house" prepared low-T activated hydrochars, obtained from carbohydrates and an eutectic salt mixture at low temperature (i.e., 180 °C) and autogenerated pressure, compete with the best commercial activated carbons for this particular application. The combination of a micro and mesopore network with a rich oxygen-based surface chemistry yielding an acidic nature allowed these low-T activated hydrochars to present the best overall recoveries (between 20.9 and 82.4%) for the simultaneous determination of the ten target PhCs with very distinct chemical properties using high performance liquid chromatography-diode array detection (HPLC-DAD).

Abstract
Methods and experiments In this study, a functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)-coated solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber was developed for concentrating analytes in aqueous samples. Sodium deoxycholate (NaDC) was used as a dispersing agent for non-covalent modification of MWCNTs. The coating showed porous structure and large adsorption capacity. To investigate the capability of this MWCNTs/NaDC SPME fiber, it was applied to the analysis of phenols in aqueous solution. After extraction, the analytes were desorbed in an acetonitrile–water solution and analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography. Results The MWCNTs/NaDC fiber exhibited good analytical performance, and fine preparation reproducibility was obtained with the relative standard deviations (RSDs) ranging from 4.9% to 10.2% (n = 6) in one batch, from 5.7% to 11.9% (n = 3) among different batches. Under the optimum extraction conditions, the detection limits were 0.15–0.30 ng/mL(S/N = 3), the linear detection ranges were 1–100 ng/mL (R2 ≥ 0.9997) for these analytes, and good recoveries (80.3–95.4%) were obtained for the spiked samples. Conclusion This is a simple and accurate pretreatment method for the analysis of phenols in aqueous samples.

Abstract
Core-shell nanofibers with the ability to carry multiple drugs are attracting the attention to develop appropriate drug delivery systems for wounds dressing applications. In this study, biocompatible core-shell nanofibers have been designed as a promising dual-drug carrier with the capability of delivering both water-soluble and organic solvent-soluble drugs simultaneously. With the aim of fabricating the core-shell nanofibers, the dipping method has been employed. For this propose, core nanofibers made from polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) were immersed in various concentrations of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and cross-linked by dipping into ethanol. Diclofenac sodium salt (DSs) and gentamicin sulfate (GENs) have been loaded into the core and shell nanofibers as models of the drug, respectively. The morphology study of core-shell nanofibers showed that the concentrations between 1% w/w up to 2% w/w PAN/GENs, with deep penetration into the internal layers of PAV/DSs nanofibers could lead to the core-shell structure. The cytotoxicity results showed the competency of designed core-shell nanofibers for wound dressing application. Also, the release profile exhibits the controllable behavior of drug release.

Abstract
Efficient extraction of pollutants with different chemical properties from environmental samples has attracted great attention in the development of analytical chemistry. However, it is still a challenge to develop an appropriate and sensitive adsorbent for determining broad-spectrum analytes. Herein, zeolitic imidazole framework-8 (ZIF-8)-derived double-shelled hollow zinc oxide/carbon (ZnO/C) nanocubes were reported as a novel coating for solid-phase microextraction (SPME). The nanocubes with a unique structure and composition were obtained by controlled etching of ZIF-8 with tannic acid (TA) followed by pyrolysis. When a ZnO/C nanocube-coated fiber (ZnO/C-F) was used to extract the complex environmental samples containing both nonpolar (benzene compounds (BTEX)) and polar (chlorophenols (CPs)) pollutants, excellent extraction performance was achieved; we obtained low detection limits (0.14-0.56 ng L-1 for BTEX and 1.10-2.84 ng L-1 for CPs), good repeatability (2.2-5.9% for six replicated extractions) and excellent reproducibility (0.61-7.8%, fiber to fiber). The broad-spectrum SPME performance was ascribed to the synergistic effect between the composition and structure of ZnO/C nanocubes. Compositionally, the uniform dispersion of ZnO and carbon framework could provide abundant adsorption active sites, where Zn-OHs bound CPs by hydrogen bonding and carbon absorbed BTEX through π-π stacking interaction and hydrophobic interaction. Structurally, the double-shelled hollow morphology of the nanocubes was favorable for the sensitive extraction. Finally, the established ZnO/C-F-based headspace-SPME method was used for the preconcentration and determination of abundant analytes from real water samples. These findings open the door for the practical use of double-shelled hollow multicompositional inorganic materials.

Abstract
Developing novel coating materials for fast and sensitive solid-phase microextraction (SPME) is highly desired but few are achieved. In this work, a new material of metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived hollow carbon nanocubes (HCNCs) was prepared as a fiber coating material for SPME. The HCNC-coated fiber (denoted as HCNCs-F) exhibited a better enrichment performance than solid carbon nanocube (SCNC)-coated fiber (denoted as SCNCs-F) and commercial fibers based on the abundant active sites of the hollow structure, hydrophobic interactions, and π-π interactions. Moreover, because of the reduced mass-transport lengths of the hollow mesoporous structure, the HCNCs-F demonstrated a faster mass transfer compared with the SCNCs-F. The HCNCs-F was used to determine the six hydrophobic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with wide linear ranges (10-2000 ng L-1 for naphthalene and 5-2000 ng L-1 for the other five analytes), good reproducibility (relative standard deviation < 8.8%), and low detection limits (0.03-0.70 ng L-1). Finally, the HCNCs-F was successfully applied for the determination of PAHs from the real water samples. It can be concluded from the results that MOF-derived hollow carbon materials are promising candidates for the fast SPME and can be used for practical applications in analytical chemistry.

Abstract
A new method has been developed to simultaneously determine 7 pyrethroid residues in tea brew using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) combined with solid phase microextraction (SPME) with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) coated fiber. The MWCNTs coated fiber of SPME was homemade by using stainless steel wire as coating carrier and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) solution as adhesive glue. Under the optimized conditions, a good linearity was shown for bifenthrin, fenpropathrin, permethrin, and cyfluthrin in 1–50 ng mL−1 and for cypermethrin, fenvalerate, and deltamethrin in 5–50 ng mL−1. The correlation coefficients were in the range of 0.9948–0.9999. The average recoveries of 7 pyrethroids were 94.2%–107.3% and the relative standard deviations (RSDs) were less than 15%. The detection limit of the method ranged from 0.12 to 1.65 ng mL−1. The tea brew samples made from some commercial tea samples were analyzed. Among them, bifenthrin, fenpropathrin, and permethrin were found. The results show that the method is rapid and sensitive and requires low organic reagent consumption, which can be well used for the detection of the pyrethroids in tea brew.

Abstract
To guarantee the safety of water resources for humans, there is a high demand for the development of highly-efficient probes for solid-phase microextraction and analysis of trace organic pollutants. In this work, we greenly synthesized nanoporous carbons (NPCs) from oilseed rape straw via a facile hydrothermal treatment and potassium bicarbonate activation. Results showed that the NPCs had partly graphitic, amorphous-like structures with a high surface area (up to 1253 m2 g−1), large pore volume (up to 0.71 cm3 g−1), high mesopore to total pore volume ratio (up to 29%) and great thermal stability (>400 °C). When the NPCs were utilized as a solid-phase microextraction fiber coating, the extraction efficiencies for chlorinated organic pollutants (COPs) were higher (1–38 times) than with a common commercial polydimethylsiloxane coating because of high surface adsorption energy, strong π–π stacking interactions and large mass transfer capacity. Using the most efficient NPC-8 coating, under optimum extraction conditions (desorption temperature, 290 °C; extraction temperature, 80 °C; extraction time, 25 min), an analysis method for trace COPs in water was developed with good linearity (0.9991–0.9998), high sensitivity (limits of detections, 0.08–0.64 ng L−1), acceptable repeatability (RSDs of single fiber, 2.63–6.73%) and great reproducibility (RSDs of fiber-to-fiber, 2.22–7.12%). Finally, the NPC-8 coating was applied to a real environmental sample with satisfactory recoveries (86.66–103.27%). Nanoporous carbons were synthesized with green process of oilseed rape straw and applied as efficient adsorbent for microextraction of COPs.![]()
