Poly(vinylidene fluoride) Containing Phosphonic Acid as Anticorrosion Coating for Steel

Are (Co)Polymers of 1,1,3,3,3-Pentafluoropropene Possible?

The copolymerization and terpolymerization of 1,1,3,3,3-pentafluoropropene (PFP) with various combinations of fluorinated and hydrogenated comonomers were investigated. The chosen fluoromonomers were vinylidene fluoride (VDF), 3,3,3-trifluoropropene (TFP), hexafluoropropene (HFP), perfluoromethylvinyl ether (PMVE), chlorotrifluoroethylene (CTFE) and tert-butyl-2-trifluoromethacrylate (MAF-TBE), while the hydrocarbon comonomers were vinylene carbonate (VCA), ethyl vinyl ether (EVE) and 3-isopropenyl-α,α-dimethylbenzyl isocyanate (m-TMI). Copolymers of PFP with non-homopolymerizable monomers (HFP, PMVE and MAF-TBE) led to quite low yields, while the introduction of VDF enabled the synthesis of poly(PFP-ter-VDF-ter-M₃) terpolymers with improved yields. PFP does not homopolymerize and delays the copolymerizations. All polymers were either amorphous fluoroelastomers or fluorothermoplastics with glass transition temperatures ranging from -56 °C to +59 °C, and they exhibited good thermal stability in air.

Design, Synthesis and Actual Applications of the Polymers Containing Acidic P-OH Fragments: Part 2-Sidechain Phosphorus-Containing Polyacids

Macromolecules containing acidic fragments in side-groups—polyacids—occupy a special place among synthetic polymers. Properties and applications of polyacids are directly related to the chemical structure of macromolecules: the nature of the acidic groups, polymer backbone, and spacers between the main chain and acidic groups. The chemical nature of the phosphorus results in the diversity of acidic >P(O)OH fragments in sidechain phosphorus-containing polyacids (PCPAs) that can be derivatives of phosphoric or phosphinic acids. Sidechain PCPAs have many similarities with other polyacids. However, due to the relatively high acidity of −P(O)(OH)2 fragment, bone and mineral affinity, and biocompatibility, sidechain PCPAs have immense potential for diverse applications. Synthetic approaches to sidechain PCPAs also have their own specifics. All these issues are discussed in the present review.

Synthesis of fluorinated phosphorus-containing copolymers and their immobilization and properties on stainless steel

A series of fluorinated-phosphonic acid methacrylates were synthesized by free radical polymerization using heptadecafluorodecyl methacrylate (HDFDMA) and (dimethoxyphosphoryl) methyl methacrylate (DMPMM) monomers for potential application as anti-corrosion coatings. The dimethyl protecting groups were then hydrolyzed, giving phosphonic acid groups that are able to stably bind onto metal oxide surfaces. The copolymers were then immobilized as a monolayer film to the surface of 316L stainless steel by treatment of dilute solutions in trifluoroacetic acid for 30 minutes followed by rinsing. The surfaces were analyzed using various techniques and contact angles as high as 128° were recorded for some copolymer functionalized surfaces. Results also demonstrated that the polymer films proved stable to hydrolysis over several weeks of immersion in water.

Effect of Multi-Phosphonate Coating of Titanium Surfaces on Osteogenic Potential

The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of a novel multi-phosphonate (MP) coating strategy of dental implant surfaces on the expression of osteogenesis-related factors in vitro. MG-63 human osteoblast-like cells, bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs), and human periodontal ligament stem cells (hPDLSCs) were cultured separately on titanium disks with and without MP coating. Cell attachment was visualized by focal adhesion and actin cytoskeleton staining. The proliferation and gene expression of the markers related to osteogenesis and bone turnover were measured after 48 and 120 h of cell culture. Actin cytoskeleton assembly and focal adhesion were similar between test surfaces within each cell type but differed from those on tissue culture plastic (TCP). The proliferation of MG-63 cells and PDLSCs was comparable on all surfaces, while BM-MSCs showed an increase on tissue culture plastic (TCP) versus titanium. The gene expression of osteoprotegerin and receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappa B ligand was higher in MG-63 cells grown on MP-coated surfaces. At the same time, osteocalcin was decreased compared to the other surfaces. Collagen type I gene expression after 120 h was significantly lower in hPDLSCs cultivated on MP-coated surfaces. Within the limitations of this study, MP coating on titanium surfaces might have a slight beneficial effect on bone turnover in vitro.

Molecular Aggregation Structure and Surface Properties of Biomimetic Catechol-Bearing Poly[2-(perfluorooctyl)ethyl acrylate] and Its Application to Superamphiphobic Coatings

The molecular aggregation structure and surface properties of a catechol-bearing fluoropolymer, P(FAC8-co-DOPAm), which was synthesized by conventional radical copolymerization of 2-(perfluorooctyl)ethyl acrylate (FAC8) and N-(3,4-dihydroxyphenethyl)acrylamide (DOPAm), and its application to the superamphiphobic surfaces are presented. The crystallinity of P(FAC8-co-DOPAm) was lower than that of poly[2-(perfluorooctyl)ethyl acrylate] (PFAC8). The perfluoroalkyl (Rf) groups were ordered on the surface with CF3 terminals exposed to air, and the Rf ordering was influenced by thermal history: the thermally annealed film exhibited higher Rf ordering than the unannealed one. The surface free energy was estimated to be γ = 7.32 mJ m-2 for both the unannealed and annealed films. Based on contact angle measurement, various interfacial structures of water and oils in accordance with the surface aggregation structure of Rf groups were proposed. Dewetting of the PFAC8 film at elevated temperature was suppressed by the introduction of catechol groups in the backbone. The degradation temperature of PFAC8 was improved significantly, and the evaporation of the low molar mass-polymer was inhibited by the introduction of catechol groups under both nitrogen and air atmospheres. The hydrophobicity of the copolymer films could be healed after the surface was damaged by vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) irradiation. This copolymer was used to create superamphiphobic fabrics and halloysite nanotube (HNT)-based organic/inorganic hybrid coatings successfully. Wetting behaviors of the superamphiphobic fabrics and coatings both follow the Cassie-Baxter wetting model.

Phosphorus-Containing Fluoropolymers: State of the Art and Applications

Several strategies to synthesize fluorinated (co)polymers containing phosphorus groups and their applications are reviewed. First, original fluoromonomers bearing phosphorus atoms are supplied from relevant routes. They may possess fluorinated atoms linked to the ethylenic carbon atoms with different structures, such as F₂C═CF- or H₂C═C(CF₃)- and a phosphonated ω-function adjacent to an aliphatic or aromatic linker, while other monomers display a difluoromethylene dialkylphosphonate end group such as -CF₂-P(O)(OR)₂. Then, fluorinated copolymers were obtained according to various pathways: (i) by radical homopolymerization of monomers containing both fluorine and phosphorus atoms, (ii) by direct radical copolymerization of fluoromonomers and phosphorus-based monomers, or (iii) by chemical modification of fluorinated copolymers with phosphorus-based reactants. Conventional radical and controlled (or reversible deactivation radical polymerization, RDRP) copolymerization have also been explored. As for the chemical change of halogenated polymers, either conventional organic reactions (e.g., Arbuzov reaction from a chlorine, iodine, or bromine atom) or radiation grafting with specific monomers led to graft copolymers composed of a fluorinated backbone and phosphonated grafts. This second part also details aliphatic and aromatic fluorophosphorous copolymers in which dialkylphosphonates or phosphonic acids are reported. Finally, since fluorine and phosphorus atoms bring complementary relevant properties (low refractive index and dielectric constants, chemical inertness, high electrochemical, soils, and heat resistances, electroattractivity from fluorine atoms and high acidity, complexation, anticorrosion, flame retardant, and biomedical properties from phosphorus ones), synergetic characteristics have been targeted. These properties allow such fluoro-phosphorus (co)polymers to be used as novel materials involved in various applications such as polymer exchange membranes for fuel cells, self-etching adhesives for dental materials, adhesion promoters, flame retardants, polymer blends, and anticorrosive coatings.

Electroactive materials with tunable response based on block copolymer self-assembly

Ferroelectric polymers represent one of the key building blocks for the preparation of flexible electronic devices. However, their lack of functionality and ability to simply tune their ferroelectric response significantly diminishes the number of fields in which they can be applied. Here we report an effective way to introduce functionality in the structure of ferroelectric polymers while preserving ferroelectricity and to further tune the ferroelectric response by incorporating functional insulating polymer chains at the chain ends of ferroelectric polymer in the form of block copolymers. The block copolymer self-assembly into lamellar nanodomains allows confined crystallization of the ferroelectric polymer without hindering the crystallinity or chain conformation. The simple adjustment of block polarity leads to a significantly different switching behavior, from ferroelectric to antiferroelectric-like and linear dielectric. Given the simplicity and wide flexibility in designing molecular structure of incorporated blocks, this approach shows the vast potential for application in numerous fields.

Polymer-based multiferroic nanocomposites via directed block copolymer self-assembly

The existence of ferroelectricity and ferromagnetism in multiferroic materials and their coupling enables the manipulation of the electric polarization with applied magnetic field and vice versa, opening many doors for the practical applications. However, the preparation of polymeric multiferroic nanocomposites is often accompanied with aggregation of magnetic particles inside the ferroelectric polymeric matrix. To overcome this issue, we developed a simple and straightforward method to obtain multiferroic nanocomposites with an exceptional and selective dispersion of magnetic nanoparticles, using self-assembly of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based block copolymers. Magnetic cobalt ferrite nanoparticles modified with gallic acid are selectively incorporated within poly(2-vinylpyridine) (P2VP) domains of the lamellar block copolymer due to strong hydrogen bond formation between the ligand and the P2VP block. Using this approach, phase separation between the blocks is improved, which leads to an increase in the degree of crystallinity, whereas the selective dispersion of nanoparticles inside amorphous domains prevents changes in the crystalline phase of the ferroelectric block. The obtained nanocomposites demonstrate both ferroelectric and magnetic properties without large conductive losses at high electric field, making them good candidates for improved multiferroic devices.

Functional fluorinated polymer materials and preliminary self-healing behavior

Effective use of Diels–Alder chemistry led to the development of thermally amendable and self-healing polymeric materials based on a copolymer of cyclopenta-1,3-dien-1-ylmethyl 2-(trifluoromethyl)acrylate (MAF-Furan) and 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl α-fluoroacrylate (FATRIFE).

Fluoropolymers: The Right Material for the Right Applications

An overview on the synthesis, properties, and applications of fluoropolymers (PFs) is presented. First, a non-exhaustive summary on the homopolymers from conventional radical polymerization of fluoromonomers is proposed. FPs are interesting materials thanks to their outstanding properties such as thermal, oxidative and chemical resistances, low dissipation factor, refractive index, permittivity, and water absorptivity, as well as excellent durability and weatherability. Various strategies of synthesis are proposed, especially on recent studies on radical (co)polymerization of fluoroalkenes, just like their properties and applications ranging from coatings and energy-related materials (e.g. fuel cell membranes, components for lithium ion batteries, electroactive devices, and photovoltaics) to original fluorinated elastomers, surfactants, thermoplastic elastomers, thermostables, and optical devices.

Bis(formylphenolato)cobalt(II)-Mediated Alternating Radical Copolymerization of tert-Butyl 2-Trifluoromethylacrylate with Vinyl Acetate

The organometallic-mediated radical polymerization (OMRP) of vinyl acetate (VAc) and its OMR copolymerization (OMRcoP) with tert-butyl 2-trifluoromethylacrylate (MAF-TBE) mediated by Co(SAL)₂ (SAL = 2-formylphenolato or deprotonated salicylaldehyde) produced relatively well-defined PVAc and poly(VAc-alt-MAF-TBE) copolymers at moderate temperature (<40 °C) in bulk. The resulting alternating copolymer was characterized by ¹H-, 13C- and 19F-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies, and by size exclusion chromatography. The linear first-order kinetic plot, the linear evolutions of the molar mass with total monomer conversion, and the relatively low dispersity (Đ~1.55) of the resulting copolymers suggest that this cobalt complex provides some degree of control over the copolymerization of VAc and MAF-TBE. Compared to the previously investigated cobalt complex OMRP mediators having a fully oxygen-based first coordination sphere, this study emphasizes a few peculiarities of Co(SAL)₂: a lower ability to trap radical chains as compared to Co(acac)₂ and the absence of catalytic chain transfer reactions, which dominates polymerizations carried in the presence of 9-oxyphenalenone cobalt derivative.
