Abstract
The advancements in the capabilities of artificial sensory technologies, such as electronic/optical noses and tongues, have significantly enhanced their ability to identify complex mixtures of analytes. These improvements are rooted in the evolving manufacturing processes of cross-reactive sensor arrays (CRSAs) and the development of innovative computational methods. The potential applications in early diagnosis, food quality control, environmental monitoring, and more, position CRSAs as an exciting area of research for scientists from diverse backgrounds. Among these, plasmonic CRSAs are particularly noteworthy because they offer enhanced capabilities for remote, fast, and even real-time monitoring, in addition to better portability of instrumentation. Specifically, the synergy between the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of metallic nanoparticles (NPs) and CRSAs introduces advanced techniques such as LSPR, metal-enhanced fluorescence (MEF), surface-enhanced infrared absorption (SEIRA), surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), and surface-enhanced resonance Raman scattering (SERRS) spectroscopies. This review delves into the importance and versatility of optical-CRSAs, especially those based on plasmonic materials, discussing recent applications and potential new research directions.

Abstract
The evaluation of the upkeep and freshness of aquatic products within the cold chain is crucial due to their perishable nature, which can significantly impact both quality and safety. Conventional methods for assessing freshness in the cold chain have inherent limitations regarding specificity and accuracy, often requiring substantial time and effort. Recently, advanced sensor technologies have been developed for freshness assessment, enabling real-time and non-invasive monitoring via the detection of volatile organic compounds, biochemical markers, and physical properties. The integration of sensor technologies into cold chain logistics enhances the ability to maintain the quality and safety of aquatic products. This review examines the advancements made in multifunctional sensor devices for the freshness assessment of aquatic products in cold chain logistics, as well as the application of pattern recognition algorithms for identification and classification. It begins by outlining the categories of freshness criteria, followed by an exploration of the development of four key sensor devices: electronic noses, electronic tongues, biosensors, and flexible sensors. Furthermore, the review discusses the implementation of advanced pattern recognition algorithms in sensor devices for freshness detection and evaluation. It highlights the current status and future potential of sensor technologies for aquatic products within the cold chain, while also addressing the significant challenges that remain to be overcome.

Abstract
Despite extensive commercial and regulatory interventions, food spoilage and contamination continue to impose massive ramifications on human health and the global economy. Recognizing that such issues will be significantly eliminated by the accurate and timely monitoring of food quality markers, smart food sensors have garnered significant interest as platforms for both real-time, in-package food monitoring and on-site commercial testing. In both cases, the sensitivity, stability, and efficiency of the developed sensors are largely informed by underlying material design, driving focus toward the creation of advanced materials optimized for such applications. Herein, a comprehensive review of emerging intelligent materials and sensors developed in this space is provided, through the lens of three key food quality markers - biogenic amines, pH, and pathogenic microbes. Each sensing platform is presented with targeted consideration toward the contributions of the underlying metallic or polymeric substrate to the sensing mechanism and detection performance. Further, the real-world applicability of presented works is considered with respect to their capabilities, regulatory adherence, and commercial potential. Finally, a situational assessment of the current state of intelligent food monitoring technologies is provided, discussing material-centric strategies to address their existing limitations, regulatory concerns, and commercial considerations.

Abstract
The detection and identification of clinical biomarkers with related sensitivity have become a source of considerable concern for biomedical analysis. There have been increasing efforts toward the development of single-molecule analytical platforms to overcome this concern. The latest developments in plasmonic nanomaterials include fascinating advances in energy, catalyst chemistry, optics, biotechnology, and medicine. Nanomaterials can be successfully applied to biomolecule and drug detection in plasmonic nanosensors for pharmaceutical and biomedical analysis. Plasmonic-based sensing technology exhibits high sensitivity and selectivity depending on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) or localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) phenomena. In this critical paper, we offer an overview of the methodology of the SPR, LSPR, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), surface-enhanced infrared absorption (SEIRA), surface-enhanced fluorescence (SEF), and plasmonic nanoplatforms advanced for pharmaceutical and biomedical applications. First of all, we present here a brief discussion of the above trends. We have devoted the last section to the explanation of SPR, LSPR, SERS, SEIRA, and SEF platforms, which have found a wide range of applications, and reviewed recent advances for biomedical and pharmaceutical analysis.

Abstract
The collective oscillation of free electrons at the nanoscale surface of gold nanostructures is closely modulated by tuning the size, shape/morphology, phase, composition, hybridization, assembly, and nanopatterning, along with the surroundings of the plasmonic surface located at a dielectric interface with air, liquid, and solid. This review first introduces the physical origin of the intrinsic optical properties of gold nanostructures and further summarizes stimuli-responsive changes in optical properties, metal-field-enhanced optical signals, luminescence spectral shaping, chiroptical response, and photogenerated hot carriers. The current success in the landscape of nanoscience and nanotechnology mainly originates from the abundant optical properties of gold nanostructures in the thermodynamically stable face-centered cubic (fcc) phase. It has been further extended by crystal phase engineering to prepare thermodynamically unfavorable phases (e.g., kinetically stable) and heterophases to modulate their intriguing phase-dependent optical properties. A broad range of promising applications, including but not limited to full-color displays, solar energy harvesting, photochemical reactions, optical sensing, and microscopic/biomedical imaging, have fostered parallel research on the multitude of physical effects occurring in gold nanostructures.

Abstract
Optical ring resonators (RRs) are a novel sensing device that has recently been developed for several sensing applications. In this review, RR structures based on three widely explored platforms, namely silicon-on-insulator (SOI), polymers, and plasmonics, are reviewed. The adaptability of these platforms allows for compatibility with different fabrication processes and integration with other photonic components, providing flexibility in designing and implementing various photonic devices and systems. Optical RRs are typically small, making them suitable for integration into compact photonic circuits. Their compactness allows for high device density and integration with other optical components, enabling complex and multifunctional photonic systems. RR devices realized on the plasmonic platform are highly attractive, as they offer extremely high sensitivity and a small footprint. However, the biggest challenge to overcome is the high fabrication demand related to such nanoscale devices, which limits their commercialization.

Abstract
Aquaculture is an expanding economic sector that nourishes the world's growing population due to its nutritional significance over the years as a source of high-quality proteins. However, it has faced severe challenges due to significant cases of environmental pollution, pathogen outbreaks, and the lack of traceability that guarantees the quality assurance of its products. Such context has prompted many researchers to work on the development of novel, affordable, and reliable technologies, many based on nanophotonic sensing methodologies. These emerging technologies, such as surface plasmon resonance (SPR), localised SPR (LSPR), and fibre-optic SPR (FO-SPR) systems, overcome many of the drawbacks of conventional analytical tools in terms of portability, reagent and solvent use, and the simplicity of sample pre-treatments, which would benefit a more sustainable and profitable aquaculture. To highlight the current progress made in these technologies that would allow them to be transferred for implementation in the field, along with the lag with respect to the most cutting-edge plasmonic sensing, this review provides a variety of information on recent advances in these emerging methodologies that can be used to comprehensively monitor the various operations involving the different commercial stages of farmed aquaculture. For example, to detect environmental hazards, track fish health through biochemical indicators, and monitor disease and biosecurity of fish meat products. Furthermore, it highlights the critical issues associated with these technologies, how to integrate them into farming facilities, and the challenges and prospects of developing plasmonic-based sensors for aquaculture.

Abstract
The transformation of an hydrogenated amorphous silicon solar cell (aSiH) into an optoelectronic refratometric sensor has been possible through the addition of dielectric bow-tie resonant structures. The indium transparent oxide top electrode is replaced by a thin metallic layer to selectively prevent the direct transmission of light to the active layer of the cell. Then, an array of dielectric bow-tie structures is placed on top of this electrode, to activate the optical absorption through surface plasmon resonance (SPR). The whole device is exposed to the analyte under measure, which is the surrounding medium. Three different dielectric materials with low, medium, and high refractive index were selected for the bow-ties, namely magnesium fluoride (MgF[Formula: see text]), silicon dioxide (SiO[Formula: see text]), and aluminum nitride (AlN) have been tested as coupling structure for SPR excitation. The maximization of the readout/short circuit current has been achieved through the geometrical parameters of such structure. We have selected the geometrical parameters to maximize the short circuit current delivered by the a-Si cell at a given selected wavelength. The design has been customized to gas measurements application, where the index of refraction is slightly above 1 around 10[Formula: see text]. Our analysis reveals ultra-high sensitivity of [Formula: see text] (mA/W)/RIU, and a figure of merit FOM= 107 RIU[Formula: see text], when the bow-tie is made of SiO[Formula: see text]. A performance rally competitive with those previously reported in literature, with the additional advantage of circunventing both moving parts and spectral interrogation elements.

Abstract
The increasing demand for food production has necessitated the development of sensitive and reliable methods of analysis, which allow for the optimization of storage and distribution while ensuring food safety. Methods to quantify and monitor volatile and biogenic amines are key to minimizing the waste of high-protein foods and to enable the safe consumption of fresh products. Novel materials and device designs have allowed the development of portable and reliable sensors that make use of different transduction methods for amine detection and food quality monitoring. Herein, we review the past decade's advances in volatile amine sensors for food quality monitoring. First, the role of volatile and biogenic amines as a food-quality index is presented. Moreover, a comprehensive overview of the distinct amine gas sensors is provided according to the transduction method, operation strategies, and distinct materials (e.g., metal oxide semiconductors, conjugated polymers, carbon nanotubes, graphene and its derivatives, transition metal dichalcogenides, metal organic frameworks, MXenes, quantum dots, and dyes, among others) employed in each case. These include chemoresistive, fluorometric, colorimetric, and microgravimetric sensors. Emphasis is also given to sensor arrays that record the food quality fingerprints and wireless devices that operate as radiofrequency identification (RFID) tags. Finally, challenges and future opportunities on the development of new amine sensors are presented aiming to encourage further research and technological development of reliable, integrated, and remotely accessible devices for food-quality monitoring.

Abstract
Total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) produced from the decomposition of amino acids is an important indicator for meat freshness. Various pH-sensitive colorimetric films have been incorporated as intelligent packaging for meat freshness during food transportation. However, methods and instruments capable of on-site end-point detection of meat freshness are still needed for places that provide raw meat without packaging. Herein, based on amine-induced pH change that led to decreased color output of the 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB)-based photosensitization colorimetric assay, a simple yet convenient instrument employing colorimetric indicator paper (CIP) was constructed for facile monitoring of meat freshness. Owing to the background color provided by the photosensitizer erythrosine (2',4',5',7'-tetraiodofluorescein, TIF), the color changed from blue to pink upon amine adsorption. A bespoke cellphone App was employed for image capture and color analysis of the CIP for freshness monitoring. The analytical results of amine (released from meat during storage) by the proposed method agreed well with those by a standard Conway dish method. In addition, the whole analytical process could be completed in about 5 min. The developed instrument may be potentially useful for on-site monitoring of meat freshness.

Abstract
A Bragg grating (BG) is a one-dimensional optical device that may reflect a specific wavelength of light while transmitting all others. It is created by the periodic fluctuation of the refractive index in the waveguide (WG). The reflectivity of a BG is specified by the index modulation profile. A Bragg grating is a flexible optical filter that has found broad use in several scientific and industrial domains due to its straightforward construction and distinctive filtering capacity. WG BGs are also widely utilized in sensing applications due to their easy integration and high sensitivity. Sensors that utilize optical signals for sensing have several benefits over conventional sensors that use electric signals to achieve detection, including being lighter, having a strong ability to resist electromagnetic interference, consuming less power, operating over a wider frequency range, performing consistently, operating at a high speed, and experiencing less loss and crosstalk. WG BGs are simple to include in chips and are compatible with complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) manufacturing processes. In this review, WG BG structures based on three major optical platforms including semiconductors, polymers, and plasmonics are discussed for filtering and sensing applications. Based on the desired application and available fabrication facilities, the optical platform is selected, which mainly regulates the device performance and footprint.

Abstract
The material and exact shape of a nanostructure determine its optical response, which is especially strong for plasmonic metals. Unfortunately, only a few plasmonic metals are available, which limits the spectral range where these strong optical effects can be utilized. Alloying different plasmonic metals can overcome this limitation, at the expense of using a high-temperature alloying process, which adversely destroys the nanostructure shape. Here, a low-temperature alloying process is developed where the sample is heated at only 300 °C for 8 h followed by 30 min at 450 °C and Au-Ag nanostructures with a broad diversity of shapes, aspect ratios, and stoichiometries are fabricated. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses confirm the homogeneous alloying through the entire sample. Varying the alloy stoichiometry tunes the optical response and controls spectral features, such as Fano resonances. Binary metasurfaces that combine nanostructures with different stoichiometries are fabricated using multiple-step electron-beam lithography, and their optical function as a hologram or a Fresnel zone plate is demonstrated at the visible wavelength of λ = 532 nm. This low-temperature annealing technique provides a versatile and cost-effective way of fabricating complex Au-Ag nanostructures with arbitrary stoichiometry.

Abstract
Traditionally, food packaging is used for improving food quality and providing consumers with descriptions of products. A new generation of intelligent ("smart") packaging materials is being developed to continuously monitor the properties of packaged foods and provide real-time information about their maturity, quality, and safety. In this paper, recent research in the development, properties, and applications of intelligent food packaging materials is summarized. Initially, we review the different sensing methods that can be used to detect alterations in food properties, such as those based on changes in time, temperature, humidity, oxygen levels, pH, chemical composition, or microbial contamination. The different approaches that can be used to design intelligent packaging materials are then highlighted, including films, bar codes, and labels. A number of applications of these packaging materials are then discussed to demonstrate their potential in the food industry. Finally, the challenges and future directions of food packaging are discussed.

Abstract
Monoclonal antibody-based immunotherapy is one of the pillars of cancer treatment. However, for an efficient and personalized approach to the therapy, a quantitative evaluation of the right dose for each patient is required. In this study, we developed a simple, label-free, and rapid approach to quantify Trastuzumab, a humanized IgG1 monoclonal antibody used against human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2), overexpressed in breast cancer patients, based on localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). The central idea of this work was to use gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) as plasmonic scaffolds, decorated with HER2 binders mixed with oligo-ethylene glycol (OEG) molecules, to tune the surface density of the attached macromolecules and to minimize nonspecific binding events. Specifically, we characterized and optimized a self-assembled monolayer of mixed alkylthiols terminated with nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA), and OEG3 as a spacing ligand to achieve both excellent dispersibility and high reliability in protein immobilization. The successful immobilization of histidine-tagged HER2 (His-tagged HER2) on NTA via cobalt (II) chelates was demonstrated, confirming the fully functional attachment of the proteins to the AuNP surface. The proposed design demonstrates the capability of producing a clear readout that enables the transduction of a Trastuzumab/HER2 binding event into optical signals based on the wavelength shifts in LSPR, which allowed for detecting clinically relevant concentrations of Trastuzumab down to 300 ng/mL in the buffer and 2 µg/mL in the diluted serum. This strategy was found to be fast and highly specific to Trastuzumab. These findings make the present platform an auspicious tool for developing affordable bio-nanosensors.

Abstract
Quality control in the production and processing of raw meat is currently one of the biggest concerns for food industry and would benefit from portable and wireless sensors capable of detecting the onset of spoilage. Raw meat is a natural source of biogenic and volatile amines as byproducts of decarboxylation reactions, and the levels of these compounds can be utilized as quality control parameters. We report herein a hybrid chemiresistor sensor based on inorganic nanofibers of SiO2:ZnO (an n-type material) and single-walled carbon nanotubes functionalized with 3,5-dinitrophenyls (a p-type material) with dosimetric sensitivity ∼40 times higher for amines than for other volatile organic compounds, which also provides excellent selectivity. The hybrid nanomaterial-based chemiresistor sensory material was used to convert radio-frequency identification tags into chemically actuated resonant devices, which constitute wireless sensors that can be potentially employed in packaging to report on the quality of meat. Specifically, the as-developed wireless tags report on cumulative amine exposure inside the meat package, showing a decrease in radio-frequency signals to the point wherein the sensor ceased to be smartphone-readable. These hybrid material-modified wireless tags offer a path to scalable, affordable, portable, and wireless chemical sensor technology for food quality monitoring without the need to open the packaging.

Abstract
Standard methods for chemical food safety testing in official laboratories rely largely on liquid or gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. Although these methods are considered the gold standard for quantitative confirmatory analysis, they require sampling, transferring the samples to a central laboratory to be tested by highly trained personnel, and the use of expensive equipment. Therefore, there is an increasing demand for portable and handheld devices to provide rapid, efficient, and on-site screening of food contaminants. Recent technological advancements in the field include smartphone-based, microfluidic chip-based, and paper-based devices integrated with electrochemical and optical biosensing platforms. Furthermore, the potential application of portable mass spectrometers in food testing might bring the confirmatory analysis from the laboratory to the field in the future. Although such systems open new promising possibilities for portable food testing, few of these devices are commercially available. To understand why barriers remain, portable food analyzers reported in the literature over the last ten years were reviewed. To this end, the analytical performance of these devices and the extent they match the World Health Organization benchmark for diagnostic tests, i.e., the Affordable, Sensitive, Specific, User-friendly, Rapid and Robust, Equipment-free, and Deliverable to end-users (ASSURED) criteria, was evaluated critically. A five-star scoring system was used to assess their potential to be implemented as food safety testing systems. The main findings highlight the need for concentrated efforts towards combining the best features of different technologies, to bridge technological gaps and meet commercialization requirements.

Abstract
Optical waveguide gas sensor with bromocresol purple (BCP) nano-film (70-80 nm) composited with silicone deposited on surface of K+-ion exchanged glass slide was fabricated and applied to detect amine gases released during mutton spoilage to test mutton freshness with the help of laser light (632 m). Gas sensing measurements (output light intensity vs. time) proved its high selectivity and good sensitivity (0.01 ppm) toward amines among volatile organic compounds. The optimal fabricating condition (2600 rpm, 0.10% BCP, 5.17% silicone) was selected experimentally, displaying 1 s and 12 s response-recovery time toward gases released from mutton samples stored at 5 °C and 25 °C respectively. The sensing mechanism was explained by combination and competition of diffusion-reaction, considering deprotonating reaction of bromocresol purple molecules and molecular size of analyte gases in diffusion process. UV-vis spectroscopy was used to select the specific wavelength of laser light source in optical waveguide performance and to detect the total volatile basic nitrogen contents in mutton sample to confirm the practicability of as-prepared optical waveguide sensor in detecting mutton freshness. The fabricated sensor is able to detect 7.2 mg/100 g gases released from mutton decomposition, providing a simple, fast, and cheap method to detect meat freshness.

Abstract
Plasmonic sensors provide real-time and label-free detection of biotargets with unprecedented sensitivity and detection limit. However, they usually lack the ability to estimate the thickness of the target layer formed on top of the sensing surface. Here, we report a sensing modality based on reflection spectroscopy of a nanoplasmonic Fabry-Perot cavity array, which exhibits characteristics of both surface plasmon polaritons and localized plasmon resonances and outperforms its conventional counterparts by providing the thickness of the surface-adsorbed layers. Through numerical simulations, we demonstrate that the designed plasmonic surface resembles two entangled Fabry-Perot cavities excited from both ends. Performance of the device is evaluated by studying sensor response in the refractive index (RI) measurement of aqueous glycerol solutions and during formation of a surface-adsorbed layer consisting of protein (i.e., NeutrAvidin) molecules. By tracking the resonance wavelengths of the two modes of the nanoplasmonic surface, it is therefore possible to measure the thickness of a homogeneous adsorbed layer and RI of the background solution with precisions better than 4 nm and 0.0001 RI units. Using numerical simulations, we show that the thickness estimation algorithm can be extended for layers consisting of nanometric analytes adsorbed on an antibody-coated sensor surface. Furthermore, performance of the device has been evaluated to detect exosomes. By providing a thickness estimation for adsorbed layers and differentiating binding events from background RI variations, this device can potentially supersede conventional plasmonic sensors.

Abstract
This review presents the state-of-the-art of optical sensors for determination of biogenic amines (BAs) in food by publications covering about the last 10 years. Interest in the development of rapid and preferably on-site methods for quantification of BAs is based on their important role in implementation and regulation of various physiological processes. At the same time, BAs can develop in different kinds of food by fermentation processes or microbial activity or arise due to contamination, which induces toxicological risks and food poisoning and causes serious health issues. Therefore, various optical chemosensor systems have been devised that are easy to assemble and fast responding and low-cost analytical tools. If amenable to on-site analysis, they are an attractive alternative to existing instrumental analytical methods used for BA determination in food. Hence, also portable sensor systems or dipstick sensors are described based on various probes that typically enable signal readouts such as photometry, reflectometry, luminescence, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, or ellipsometry. The quantification of BAs in real food samples and the design of the sensors are highlighted and the analytical figures of merit are compared. Future instrumental trends for BA sensing point to the use of cell phone-based fully automated optical evaluation and devices that could even comprise microfluidic micro total analysis systems.

Abstract
Two (tetrahydrodibenzo[a,i]phenanthridin-5-yl)phenols that differ in their substituents at the para position (P1, R = H and P2, R = NEt2) were designed and synthesized. The presence of a -NEt2 group in probe P2 facilitates the twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) process, making P2 emissive, which distinctly coordinated with boron trifluoride in the presence of different amines with different electronic properties. A substantial increase in emission intensity with increasing viscosity of the surrounding environment and smooth formation of a planar complex with boron and Zn2+ ions concluded the presence of a TICT process. The selective reactivity of P2 toward a tetracoordinated boron complex has been explored as a potential tool for colorimetric and fluorescent discrimination of aromatic primary amines, i.e., anilines. Selective detection of aniline with probe P2 can be viewed through the naked eye, and the corresponding fluorescence turn-on detection limit was found to be 12.65 nM. In addition, the detection of aniline on precoated aluminum-backed thin-layer chromatography plates and Whatman filter paper strips was found to be in good agreement with the color change of P2 in solution and in vapor phase.

Abstract
A procedure for supporting silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on nylon is proposed. Besides, the membrane has been developed as a solid-phase colorimetric plasmonic sensor for volatile sulfide compounds (VSCs) like H2S, CH3SH, and (CH3)2S. AgNP behavior in the membrane has been studied by UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectrometry, Raman spectrometry, High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The sensor responded by changing its color from yellow in absence of VSCs to several orange/brown colors in the function of VSC concentration as occurs in solution; an increase in the hydrodynamic diameter, estimated by both asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation (AF4) coupled on line to Dynamic light scattering (DLS) detector and batch DLS, is achieved when sulfide is added to the citrate-capped AgNPs. Diffuse reflectance spectrometry and processed digital images obtained with a smartphone have been used as measurements and several transformations for quantitation are proposed; a linear concentration range of hydrogen sulfide from 150 to 1000 ppbv and a detection limit (LOD) of 45 ppbv were achieved, measuring after 10 min of the sensor exposition to the hydrogen sulfide atmosphere (2 L) for humidity percentages between 50 and 96% and room temperature. Satisfactory results in terms of precision (<10%) and selectivity were obtained. The new sensor reported was stable, sensitive, inexpensive, disposable, safe, and user-friendly. Furthermore, it has successfully been applied to determine VSCs expressed as hydrogen sulfide in breath samples (2 L and 250 mL) as a proof of concept. The limit of detection can be improved by increasing the exposition time, if necessary.

Abstract
Amine compounds are considered highly important in environmental pollution, industrial, and medicinal fields. The objective of this work was to develop a disposable, highly accurate, highly selective, and low-cost paper-based probe through the combination of color change of seven pH indicators for the detection of amine compounds in the gaseous state. The probe was designed with seven rings which were printed using the wax-printing technique and colored with different pH indicators. The colors of the probe were analyzed using red, green, and blue (RGB) values extracted from the images obtained with a homemade smartphone application. The chemometric tools, principal component analysis, and hierarchical cluster analysis methods were adapted to further classify amine gases. The colorimetric probe showed an excellent capability for detecting the amines with high accuracy, prompt response, and high selectivity. These dye arrays have been proven to detect ethanolamine (NH2CH2CH2OH), dimethylamine ((CH3)2NH), and trimethylamine ((CH3)3N) gases at parts per million scale.

Abstract
There are many potential applications for biosensors that can provide real-time analysis, such as environmental monitoring and disease prevention. In this study, we investigated a simple strategy for real-time protein detection, which had the advantages of affordability, fast response, portability, and ease of use. A robust quantification of protein interaction was achieved by combining capillary localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) sensors and complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) image sensors. Gold nanoparticles were modified on the inner wall of the capillary, which was used as a microfluidic channel and sensing surface. We functionalized one of the LSPR sensors using ligand bound to gold nanoparticle. Our proposed biosensing platform could be easily multiplexed to achieve high throughput screening of biomolecular interactions, and it has the potential for use in disposable sensors. Moreover, the sensing signal was enhanced by the extinction effect of gold nanoparticles. The experimental results showed that our device could achieve qualitative identification and quantitative measurement of transferrin and immunoglobulin G (IgG). As a field-portable and low-cost optical platform, the proposed LSPR biosensing device is broadly applicable to various protein binding tests via a similar self-assembly of organic ultrathin films.

Abstract
A reliable and sensitive detection of biogenic amines (BAs) is essential to ensure food safety and maintain public health. In this study, two naphthyl end-capped terthiophene derivatives, namely, 5-(naphthalen-1-yl)-2,2':5',2''-terthiophene (NA-3T) and 5,5''-di(naphthalen-1-yl)-2,2':5',2''-terthiophene (NA-3T-NA), were employed to develop chemiresistive sensors for detecting gaseous BAs. In contrast to NA-3T, the NA-3T-NA-based sensor showed a higher sensitivity for trimethylamine (TMA) with an experimental detection limit lower than 22 ppm, and for aromatic BAs, including dopamine, histamine, tryptamine, and tyramine. Additionally, the recovery time for TMA was found to be shorter than 23 s. In addition, both sensors were successfully used for an in situ evaluation of meat freshness by monitoring the concentration of relevant volatile BAs. The difference in the sensing performances of the two chemiresistive sensors was tentatively ascribed to different packing structures of the derivatives and the adlayer structures of the films developed with the compounds.

Abstract
Fatty acids (FAs) are of interest to the areas of food science and medicine because they are important dietary sources of fuel for animals and play important roles in many biological processes. The health effects of FAs are different due to the diversity of olefinic bonds in the alkyl chains including number, position and configuration. However, the discrimination of FAs is difficult from a chemical sensing perspective due to the lack of diversity in terms of functional groups. Until now, only a few chemosensors have been developed for selective sensing of FAs based on their overall shape, however they are still limited in discrimination of FAs with subtle structural differences, moreover, they cannot be used for rapid and in situ inspections. Herein, for the first time, we designed a test paper for in situ colorimetric inspection for FAs based on the combination of the highly selective binding of Ag+ to olefinic bonds and Ag+ mediated color variation of 3,3′,5,5′,-tetramethylbenzidine. As a result, the sensor exhibited high sensitivity and good selectivity for five FAs with subtle structural differences. Furthermore, our method described herein was successfully applied to monitor the structural variations of FAs and quality changes in mixture edible hot pot oils with heat treatment in time course. Hence, the test paper presented herein holds great potential in the inspection of fats and edible oils in food industries.

Abstract
Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), the N-oxide metabolite of trimethylamine (TMA), is a key index in the determination of a wide variety of human cardiac or kidney diseases. A colorimetric sensor array comprising ultrasonically prepared silica-dye microspheres was developed for rapid, portable, and sensitive detection of urinary TMAO. To prepare the sensor array, 13 different organically modified silica (ormosil)-dye composites were synthesized from the hydrolysis/pyrolysis of ultrasonically sprayed organosiloxane precursors under optimized reaction conditions; the resulting products are uniformly sized nanoporous microspheres that are effective colorimetric sensors for various volatile analytes. The effective quantification of aqueous TMAO (which is not volatile) was based on sensing the volatile TMA produced from a simple catalytic reduction of TMAO in situ. RGB color-change patterns from digital images of the sensor array permit precise discrimination among a wide range of TMAO concentrations (10-750 μM) in simulated urine samples; both hierarchical cluster analysis and principal component analysis achieve >99% accuracy in data classification. The calculated limit of detection of urinary TMAO is ∼4 μM, which is substantially below the median level of healthy subjects (∼380 μM). The array of sensors could be simplified to only a couple of strongly responsive elements for the ease of field use, and the process could be developed as a point-of-care tool in combination with digital imaging for the early diagnosis of cardiovascular or kidney diseases from the measurement of fasting urinary level of TMAO.

Abstract
Electrospun nanofibers (ENFs) are promising materials for rapid diagnostic tests like lateral flow assays and dipsticks because they offer an immense surface area while excluding minimal volume, a variety of functional surface groups, and can entrap functional additives within their interior. Here, we show that ENFs on sample pads are superior in comparison to standard polymer membranes for the optical detection of biogenic amines (BAs) in food using a dipstick format. Specifically, cellulose acetate (CA) fibers doped with 2 mg/mL of the chromogenic and fluorogenic amine-reactive chameleon dye Py-1 were electrospun into uniform anionic mats. Those extract cationic BAs from real samples and Py-1 transduces BA concentrations into a change of color, reflectance, and fluorescence. Dropping a BA sample onto the nanofiber mat converts the weakly fluorescent pyrylium dye Py-1 into a strongly red emitting pyridinium dye. For the first time, a simple UV lamp excites fluorescence and a digital camera acts as detector. The intensity ratio of the red to the blue channel of the digital image is dependent on the concentration of most relevant BAs indicating food spoilage from 10 to 250 μM. This matches the permitted limits for BAs in foods and no false positive signals arise from secondary and tertiary amines. BA detection in seafood samples was also demonstrated successfully. The nanofiber mat dipsticks were up to sixfold more sensitive than those using a polymer membrane with the same dye embedded. Hence, nanofiber-based tests are not only superior to polymer-based dipstick assays, but will also improve the performance of established tests related to food safety, medical diagnostics, and environmental testing.
