Facile Fabrication of Composite Membranes with Dual Thermo- and pH-Responsive Characteristics

Advanced stimuli-responsive membranes for smart separation

Membranes have been extensively studied and applied in various fields owing to their high energy efficiency and small environmental impact. Further conferring membranes with stimuli responsiveness can allow them to dynamically tune their pore structure and/or surface properties for efficient separation performance. This review summarizes and discusses important developments and achievements in stimuli-responsive membranes. The most commonly utilized stimuli, including light, pH, temperature, ions, and electric and magnetic fields, are discussed in detail. Special attention is given to stimuli-responsive control of membrane pore structure (pore size and porosity/connectivity) and surface properties (wettability, surface topology, and surface charge), from the perspective of determining the appropriate membrane properties and microstructures. This review also focuses on strategies to prepare stimuli-responsive membranes, including blending, casting, polymerization, self-assembly, and electrospinning. Smart applications for separations are also reviewed as well as a discussion of remaining challenges and future prospects in this exciting field. This review offers critical insights for the membrane and broader materials science communities regarding the on-demand and dynamic control of membrane structures and properties. We hope that this review will inspire the design of novel stimuli-responsive membranes to promote sustainable development and make progress toward commercialization.

Designable Micro-/Nano-Structured Smart Polymeric Materials

Smart polymeric materials with dynamically tunable physico-chemical characteristics in response to changes of environmental stimuli, have received considerable attention in myriad fields. The diverse combination of their micro-/nano-structural and molecular designs creates promising and exciting opportunities for exploiting advanced smart polymeric materials. Engineering micro-/nano-structures into smart polymeric materials with elaborate molecular design enables intricate coordination between their structures and molecular-level response to cooperatively realize smart functions for practical applications. In this review, recent progresses of smart polymeric materials that combine micro-/nano-structures and molecular design to achieve designed advanced functions are highlighted. Smart hydrogels, gating membranes, gratings, milli-particles, micro-particles and microvalves are employed as typical examples to introduce their design and fabrication strategies. Meanwhile, the key roles of interplay between their micro-/nano-structures and responsive properties to realize the desired functions for their applications are emphasized. Finally, perspectives on the current challenges and opportunities of micro-/nano-structured smart polymeric materials for their future development are presented.

Stimuli-Responsive Nanoparticles for Controlled Drug Delivery in Synergistic Cancer Immunotherapy

Cancer immunotherapy has achieved promising clinical progress over the recent years for its potential to treat metastatic tumors and inhibit their recurrences effectively. However, low patient response rates and dose-limiting toxicity remain as major dilemmas for immunotherapy. Stimuli-responsive nanoparticles (srNPs) combined with immunotherapy offer the possibility to amplify anti-tumor immune responses, where the weak acidity, high concentration of glutathione, overexpressions of enzymes, and reactive oxygen species, and external stimuli in tumors act as triggers for controlled drug release. This review highlights the design of srNPs based on tumor microenvironment and/or external stimuli to combine with different anti-tumor drugs, especially the immunoregulatory agents, which eventually realize synergistic immunotherapy of malignant primary or metastatic tumors and acquire a long-term immune memory to prevent tumor recurrence. The authors hope that this review can provide theoretical guidance for the construction and clinical transformation of smart srNPs for controlled drug delivery in synergistic cancer immunotherapy.

Silica-templated photonic crystal sensors for specific detection of Cu2+

A novel Cu-IOPC sensor was developed by combining the SiO2-based inverse opals with imidazolyl. Such mechanism is based on the specific binding of imidazole with copper ions, then the copper ions can be detected with high accuracy and efficiency.

High-Flux pH-Responsive Ultrafiltration Membrane for Efficient Nanoparticle Fractionation

Fractionation of nanoparticles with different sizes from the mixture by using a single membrane would reduce the membrane cost and enhance the efficiency. In this study, an amphiphilic pH-responsive copolymer was prepared by grafting a pH-responsive hydrophilic polymethacrylic acid (PMAA) side chain from a hydrophobic poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-chlorotrifluoroethylene), P(VDF-CTFE) backbone. Subsequently, the isoporous pH-responsive membranes (PPMs) were prepared from the functional copolymers with different PMAA chain lengths. PPM indicated reversible pore size decreasing with the increasing pH of the feed. Moreover, the membrane pore size variation range was further extended by adjusting the PMAA side chain length of the copolymer to reach a wide range from 10.2 to 34.5 nm. Owning to the amphiphilic nature of the copolymer, PPM showed a narrow pore size distribution which is responsible for the much higher pure water flux of PPM than the conventional UF membrane with similar retention capability. In the fractionation test, the mixed 20 and 30 nm polystyrene nanoparticles were penetrating PPM at pH 11 and 3, respectively. The pH-responsive PPM indicated great potential for nanoparticle fractionation, while the uniform pores of PPM further enhanced the membrane performance in terms of permeability and selectivity.

Planning of smart gating membranes for water treatment

The use of membranes in desalination and water treatment has been intensively studied in recent years. The conventional membranes however have various problems such as uncontrollable pore size and membrane properties, which prevents membranes from quickly responding to alteration of operating and environmental conditions. As a result the membranes are fouled, and their separation performance is lowered. The preparation of smart gating membranes inspired by cell membranes is a new method to face these challenges. Introducing stimuli-responsive functional materials into traditional porous membranes and use of hydrogels and microgels can change surface properties and membrane pore sizes under different conditions. This review shows potential of smart gating membranes in water treatment. Various types of stimuli-response such as those of thermo-, pH-, ion-, molecule-, UV light-, magnetic-, redox- and electro-responsive gating membranes along with various gel types such as those of polyelectrolyte, PNIPAM-based, self-healing hydrogels and microgel based-smart gating membranes are discussed. Design strategies, separation mechanisms and challenges in fabrication of smart gating membranes in water treatment are also presented. It is demonstrated that experimental and modeling and simulation results have to be utilized effectively to produce smart gating membranes.

100th Anniversary of Macromolecular Science Viewpoint: Integrated Membrane Systems

Membranes fabricated from self-assembled materials are one recent example of how polymer science has been leveraged to advance membrane technology. Due to their well-defined nanostructures, the performance of membranes made from these materials is pushing the boundaries of size-selective filtration. Still, there remains a need for higher performance and more selective membranes. The advent of functional membrane platforms that rely on mechanisms beyond steric hindrance (e.g., charge-selective membranes and membrane sorbents) is one approach to realize improved solute-solute selectivity and further advance membrane technology. To date, the lab-scale demonstration of these platforms has often relied on fabrication schemes that require extended processing times. However, in order to translate lab-scale demonstrations to larger-scale implementation, it is critical that the rate of the functionalization scheme is reconciled with membrane manufacturing rates. In this viewpoint, it is postulated that substrates lined by reactive moieties that are amenable to postfabrication modification would enable the production of membranes with controlled nanostructures while providing access to a diverse array of pore wall chemistries. A comparison of reaction and manufacturing rates suggests that mechanisms that exhibit second-order reaction rate constants of at least 1 M^-1 s^-1 are needed for roll-to-roll processing. Furthermore, for mechanisms that exhibit rate constants greater than 300 M^-1 s^-1, it may be possible to integrate multiple functional domains over the membrane surface such that useful properties emerge. These multifunctional systems can expand the capabilities of membranes when the patterned chemistries interact at the heterojunctions between domains (e.g., Janus and charge-patterned mosaic membranes) or if they exhibit cooperative responses to external operating conditions (e.g., membrane pumps).

Thermal-Responsive Photonic Crystal with Function of Color Switch Based on Thermochromic System

Responsive photonic crystals have attracted considerable attention. The responsiveness is usually achieved through the variation of reflection wavelengths based on Bragg diffraction. However, distinguishing external stimuli from intrinsic angle dependence is a challenge. Herein, a novel thermal-responsive photonic crystal was constructed based on the synergistic effect of the low-angle dependence of SnO₂ inverse opals and a thermochromic phase change system. The organic thermochromic phase change system was obtained by mixing the fluoran dye (heat-sensitive red TF-R₂), bisphenol A, and aliphatic alcohols in a certain proportion. By filling the thermochromic phase change system into SnO₂ inverse opals, the thermal-responsive photonic crystal was fabricated. Through simple external thermal stimulation, the mutual transformation of low-angle-dependent structural color and pigmentary color is realized and inverse opal patterns can be displayed and hidden. The proposed system, while preventing the interference of the observation angle to the thermal stimulation, shows potential application prospect in the fields of anti-counterfeiting and information encryption fields.
