CO2/Water Emulsions Stabilized by Partially Reduced Graphene Oxide

Structured electroplating sludge derived membrane for one-step removal of oil, metal ions, and anions from oil/water emulsions

The effective simultaneous treatment of hazardous waste sludge and complex oil/water emulsions in one way is urgently desired but still a challenging issue. Herein, this work for the first time presents a green and efficient strategy to fabricate an electroplating sludge (ES) derived multifunctional self-supporting membrane for the one-step removal of emulsified oils, soluble metal ions, and anions in complex oily wastewater. Due to low cost of ES and sustainability of the solvent selected in fabrication process, the large-scale application of the membrane is easily to promote. The assembled hierarchical nanostructure endowed robust underwater superoleophobicity of the membrane even under various corrosive aqueous environments, as well as excellent ultra-low oil adhesion and anti-oil-fouling performance, without chemical modification. Significantly, the multifunctional membrane possessed desirable simultaneous separation efficiency for five typical oil-in-water emulsions (>99.4%, high oil/water selective wettability), including crude oil-in-water emulsion with high viscosity (>99.6%), Cu²⁺ (>96.1%, surface complexation and ionic exchange), and Cl^- (>92.7%, electrostatic attraction). Therefore, this green, low-cost, and multifunctional membrane not only allows the large-scale resource utilization of hazardous waste sludge, but also effectively solves the problems of complex oily wastewater purification.

Effect of cetyltrimethyl-ammonium bromide on the properties of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles stabilized Pickering emulsion and its cured poly(L-lactic acid) materials

Hydroxyapatite (HAp) nanoparticles stabilized Pickering emulsions were prepared by dichloromethane (CH₂ Cl₂ ) dissolved poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) as the oil phase and the deionized water with different concentrations of cetyltrimethyl-ammonium bromide (CTAB) as the aqueous phase. Effect of CTAB concentration on emulsions type and stability were studied. The emulsion type underwent a two-phase inversion, and emulsion stability increased first and then decreased with increasing CTAB concentrations. Besides, effect of CTAB concentration on zeta potential, aggregate size, contact angle of HAp nanoparticles and the oil-water interfacial tension were studied. The results indicated that zeta potential value of HAp nanoparticles changed from negative to positive, and the contact angle increased to over 80° initially and then decreased to below 40° rapidly. The distribution of HAp nanoparticles on the surface of emulsion droplets with different concentrations of CTAB (5 and 20 mM) was characterized using laser-induced confocal microscope. It revealed the distribution of HAp nanoparticles changed with different CTAB concentrations. The cured PLLA materials were obtained after the solvent being volatilized using as-received emulsions as templates. Scanning electron microscope images showed both microspheres and porous materials with interconnected pore structure were obtained. In conclusion, the microstructure of microspheres or porous PLLA materials is controllable by adjusting the property of HAp nanoparticles stabilized Pickering emulsions with appropriate amount of CTAB.

Applications of Graphene and Its Derivatives in the Upstream Oil and Gas Industry: A Systematic Review

Graphene and its derivatives, with their unique two-dimensional structures and excellent physical and chemical properties, have been an international research hotspot both in the research community and industry. However, in application-oriented research in the oil and gas industry they have only drawn attention in the past several years. Their excellent optical, electrical, thermal and mechanical performance make them great candidates for use in oil and gas exploration, drilling, production, and transportation. Combined with the actual requirements for well working fluids, chemical enhanced oil recovery, heavy oil recovery, profile control and water shutoff, tracers, oily wastewater treatment, pipeline corrosion prevention treatment, and tools and apparatus, etc., this paper introduces the behavior in water and toxicity to organisms of graphene and its derivatives in detail, and comprehensively reviews the research progress of graphene materials in the upstream oil and gas industry. Based on this, suggestions were put forward for the future research. This work is useful to the in-depth mechanism research and application scope broadening research in the upstream oil and gas industry.

Pickering emulsions: Versatility of colloidal particles and recent applications

The versatility of colloidal particles endows the particle stabilized or Pickering emulsions with unique features and can potentially enable the fabrication of a wide variety of derived materials. We review the evolution and breakthroughs in the research on the use of colloidal particles for the stabilization of Pickering emulsions in recent years for the particle categories of inorganic particles, polymer-based particles, and food-grade particles. Moreover, based on the latest works, several emulsions stabilized by the featured particles and their derived functional materials, including enzyme immobilized emulsifiers for interfacial catalysis, 2D colloidal materials stabilized emulsions as templates for porous materials, and Pickering emulsions as adjuvant formulations, are also summarized. Finally, we point out the gaps in the current research on the applications of Pickering emulsions and suggest future directions for the design of particulate stabilizers and preparation methods for Pickering emulsions and their derived materials.

An Evaluation of Graphene Oxides as Possible Foam Stabilizing Agents for CO₂ Based Enhanced Oil Recovery

Graphene oxide, nanographene oxide and partially reduced graphene oxide have been studied as possible foam stabilizing agents for CO₂ based enhanced oil recovery. Graphene oxide was able to stabilize CO₂/synthetic sea water foams, while nanographene oxide and partially reduced graphene oxide were not able to stabilize foams. The inability of nanographene oxide for stabilizing foams was explained by the increase of hydrophilicity due to size decrease, while for partially reduced graphene oxide, the high degree of reduction of the material was considered to be the reason. Graphene oxide brine dispersions showed immediate gel formation, which improved foam stability. Particle growth due to layer stacking was also observed. This mechanism was detrimental for foam stabilization. Gel formation and particle growth caused these particles to block pores and not being filterable. The work indicates that the particles studied are not suitable for CO₂ enhanced oil recovery purposes.

2D Particles at Fluid-Fluid Interfaces: Assembly and Templating of Hybrid Structures for Advanced Applications

Fluid-fluid interfaces have widespread applications in personal care products, the food industry, oil recovery, mineral processes, etc. and are also important and versatile platforms for generating advanced materials. In Pickering emulsions, particles stabilize the fluid-fluid interface, and their presence reduces the interfacial energy between the two fluids. To date, most Pickering emulsions stabilized by 2D particles make use of clay platelets or GO nanosheets. These systems have been used to template higher order hybrid, functional materials, most commonly, armored polymer particles, capsules, and Janus nanosheets. This review discusses the experimental and computational study of the assembly of sheet-like 2D particles at fluid-fluid interfaces, with an emphasis on the impact of chemical composition, and the use of these assemblies to prepare composite structures of dissimilar materials. The review culminates in a perspective on the future of Pickering emulsions using 2D particle surfactants, including new chemical modification and types of particles as well as the realization of properties and applications not possible with currently accessible systems, such as lubricants, porous structures, delivery, coatings, etc.

Dynamic Covalent Silica Nanoparticles for pH-Switchable Pickering Emulsions

Dynamic covalent surfactants have been recently reported for preparation of pH-switchable emulsions [ Sun , D. Langmuir , 2017 , 33 , 3040 ]. In this study, dynamic covalent silica (SiO₂-B) nanoparticles of switchable wettability were fabricated by a pH-responsive dynamic (covalent) imine bond between hydrophilic amino silica (SiO₂-NH₂) nanoparticles and hydrophobic benzaldehyde molecules. The properties of SiO₂-B were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, contact angle measurement, and ζ potential measurement. The hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity of SiO₂-B were shown to be readily switchable by adjusting pH between 7.8 and 3.5. At pH 7.8, SiO₂-B was partially hydrophobic and adsorbed at oil-water interface to stabilize O/W Pickering emulsions, which were characterized by electrical conductivity, optical microscopy, and confocal laser scanning microscopy. Upon lowering the pH to 3.5, the dynamic covalent bond is dissociated to convert partially hydrophobic SiO₂-B into highly hydrophilic SiO₂-NH₂ and surface-inactive benzaldehyde. Both of them desorb from oil-water interface, resulting in a rapid oil-water separation of the Pickering emulsions. Alternating stabilization and phase separation of the Pickering emulsions over 3 cycles were demonstrated by adjusting the pH. The pH-switchable Pickering emulsions show great potential in application to effective oil-water separation of emulsions.
