Particle Size Influences on the Coating Microstructure through Green Chromia Inclusion in Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation

Features of Composite Layers Created Using an Aqueous Suspension of a Fluoropolymer

This paper presents a method for the formation of composite-polymer-containing coatings on MA8 Mg alloy by plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO), followed by the deposition of a fluoropolymer from an aqueous suspension of superdispersed polytetrafluoroethylene. The Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy(EDS), and X-ray Diffraction(XRD) analyses established morphological features as well as elemental and phase composition of composite coatings. The fact that the pores are filled with a fluoropolymer has been experimentally confirmed. An assessment of the corrosion properties of formed composite coatings revealed a decrease in the corrosion current density by more than four orders of magnitude in comparison with the base PEO layer. The highest resistance to the damaging effects of a corrosive environment, according to the results of long-term exposure tests, was demonstrated by coatings after three treatments with polytetrafluoroethylene. The obtained polymer-containing coatings have antifriction properties, reducing the wear of the coatings by more than 27-fold in comparison with the base PEO layer. It was revealed that composite coatings have superhydrophobic properties: the value of the contact angle reaches 154°, and the hysteresis of the contact angle is less than 10°.

Effect of Pre-Anodized Film on Micro-Arc Oxidation Process of 6063 Aluminum Alloy

In the current investigation, micro-arc oxidation (MAO) ceramic coatings on aluminum are galvanostatically synthesized at various processing stages in an alkaline silicate system. The resultant coatings are systematically investigated in terms of the following respects: The working voltage and surface sparking evolution over the studied course of MAO are recorded by the signal acquisition system and the real-time imaging, respectively; the phase composition, the surface morphology, and the polished cross-section of the coatings are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) assisted with an energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS), respectively. In particular, with the help of a low-rate increase in working voltage, the evolution of the sparks, the energy consumption, and the microstructure development of aluminum in alkaline silicate electrolyte by pre-anodizing are systematically investigated. The results show that the pre-anodized film can accelerate the evolution process of MAO spark and shorten the reaction process in the early stage of MAO reaction, reducing energy consumption and improving the corrosion resistance of the MAO coating. The γ-Al2O3 phase content after pre-anodized is significantly increased in MAO coatings. In particular, the thicker the pre-anodized film (beyond 8 μm) was broken down and fragmentation thinning in the early stage of the MAO process with the presence of micro discharges. This is due to the fact that the electron transition will be released by the emission of radiative recombination and reveals obvious galvanoluminescence (GL) behavior on the surface of the pre-anodized film. Further, based on the present MAO coating microstructure, a model of coating growth after pre-anodized that evolves over time is proposed.

Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO) Process-Processing, Properties, and Applications

Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) is a novel surface treatment process to produce thick, dense metal oxide coatings, especially on light metals, primarily to improve their wear and corrosion resistance. The coating manufactured from the PEO process is relatively superior to normal anodic oxidation. It is widely employed in the fields of mechanical, petrochemical, and biomedical industries, to name a few. Several investigations have been carried out to study the coating performance developed through the PEO process in the past. This review attempts to summarize and explain some of the fundamental aspects of the PEO process, mechanism of coating formation, the processing conditions that impact the process, the main characteristics of the process, the microstructures evolved in the coating, the mechanical and tribological properties of the coating, and the influence of environmental conditions on the coating process. Recently, the PEO process has also been employed to produce nanocomposite coatings by incorporating nanoparticles in the electrolyte. This review also narrates some of the recent developments in the field of nanocomposite coatings with examples and their applications. Additionally, some of the applications of the PEO coatings have been demonstrated. Moreover, the significance of the PEO process, its current trends, and its scope of future work are highlighted.

Correlation between Defect Density and Corrosion Parameter of Electrochemically Oxidized Aluminum

It has been recognized that a connection may exist between defects of oxide coating and its corrosion protection. Such a link has not been substantiated. We prepare two coatings of anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) and plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO), and analyze them with Mott-Schottky plots and potentiodynamic polarization scans. The as-grown and annealed AAO coatings exhibit both p-type and n-type semiconductor behaviors. Polarization resistance of the AAO coating increases from (1.8 ± 1.7) × 108 to (4.3 ± 0.5) × 108 Ω·cm2, while corrosion current decreases from (6.1 ± 3.6) × 10−7 to (2.3 ± 0.9) × 10−7 A·cm−2, as annealing temperature increases from room temperature to 400 °C. The parameter analysis on AAO indicates a positive correlation between corrosion current and donor density, a negative correlation between polarization resistance and donor density. The attempt on correlating corrosion potential gives rise to considerable deviation from a linear fit. The results suggest protection of AAO hinges on its donor density, not acceptor. On the PEO coatings, only the n-type behavior is observed. Intriguingly, the donor density of PEO coating is influenced by the annealing temperature of its pre-anodized layer. The most resistant PEO coating, with pre-anodized and 400 °C annealed AAO, exhibits polarization resistance (2.1 ± 0.4) × 109 Ω·cm2 and corrosion current (1.7 ± 0.4) × 10−8 A·cm−2.

Influence of SiO2 Particles on the Corrosion and Wear Resistance of Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation-Coated AM50 Mg Alloy

The influence of SiO2 particles on the microstructure, phase composition, corrosion and wear performance of plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) coatings on AM50 Mg was investigated. Different treatment durations were applied to fabricate coatings in an alkaline, phosphate-based electrolyte (1 g/L KOH + 20 g/L Na3PO4 + 5 g/L SiO2), aiming to control the incorporated amount of SiO2 particles in the layer. It was found that the uptake of particles was accompanied by the coating growth at the initial stage, while the particle content remained unchanged at the final stage, which is dissimilar to the evolution of the coating thickness. The incorporation mode of the particles and phase composition of the layer was not affected by the treatment duration under the voltage-control regime. The corrosion performance of the coating mainly depends on the barrier property of the inner layer, while wear resistance primarily relies on the coating thickness.
