In Situ Ellipsometric Monitoring of Gold Nanorod Metamaterials Growth

Gain-Assisted Giant Third-Order Nonlinearity of Epsilon-Near-Zero Multilayered Metamaterials

We investigate the third-order nonlinear optical properties of epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) Au/dye-doped fused silica multilayered metamaterials in the visible spectral range for TM incident by using nonlocal effective medium theory at different incidence angles. The nonlocal response affects the permittivity of anisotropic metamaterials when the thickness of the layer cannot be much smaller than the incident wavelength. By doping pump dye gain material within the dielectric layer to compensate for the metal loss, the imaginary part of the effective permittivity is reduced to 10^-4, and the optical nonlinear refractive index and nonlinear absorption coefficient are enhanced. The real and imaginary parts of the permittivity are simultaneously minimized when the central emission wavelength of the gain material is close to the ENZ wavelength, and the nonlinear refraction coefficient reaches the order of 10^-5 cm²/W, which is five orders of magnitude larger than that of the nonlinear response of the metamaterial without the gain medium. Our results demonstrate that a smaller imaginary part of the permittivity can be obtained by doping gain materials within the dielectric layer; it offers the promise of designing metamaterials with large nonlinearity at arbitrary wavelengths.

Gold Nanorods: The Most Versatile Plasmonic Nanoparticles

Gold nanorods (NRs), pseudo-one-dimensional rod-shaped nanoparticles (NPs), have become one of the burgeoning materials in the recent years due to their anisotropic shape and adjustable plasmonic properties. With the continuous improvement in synthetic methods, a variety of materials have been attached around Au NRs to achieve unexpected or improved plasmonic properties and explore state-of-the-art technologies. In this review, we comprehensively summarize the latest progress on Au NRs, the most versatile anisotropic plasmonic NPs. We present a representative overview of the advances in the synthetic strategies and outline an extensive catalogue of Au-NR-based heterostructures with tailored architectures and special functionalities. The bottom-up assembly of Au NRs into preprogrammed metastructures is then discussed, as well as the design principles. We also provide a systematic elucidation of the different plasmonic properties associated with the Au-NR-based structures, followed by a discussion of the promising applications of Au NRs in various fields. We finally discuss the future research directions and challenges of Au NRs.

Nanomolding of Gold and Gold-Silicon Heterostructures at Room Temperature

Nanofabrication techniques are limited by at least one of the required characteristics such as choice of material, control over geometry, fabrication requirements, yield, cost, and scalability. Our previously developed method of thermomechanical nanomolding fulfills these requirements, although it requires high processing temperatures. Here, we demonstrate low-temperature molding where we utilize the enhanced diffusivity on "eutectic interfaces". Gold nanorods are molded at room temperature using Au-Si alloy as feedstock. Instead of using alloy feedstock, these "eutectic interfaces" can also be established through a feedstock-mold combination. We demonstrate this by using pure Au as feedstock, which is molded into Si molds at room temperature, and also the reverse, Si feedstock is molded into Au molds forming high aspect ratio Au-Si core-shell nanorods. We discuss the mechanism of this low-temperature nanomolding in terms of lower homologous temperature at the eutectic interface. This technique, based on enhanced eutectic interface diffusion, provides a practical nanofabrication method that eliminates the previous high-temperature requirements, thereby expanding the range of the materials that can be practically nanofabricated.

Au-Se-Bond-Based Nanoprobe for Imaging MMP-2 in Tumor Cells under a High-Thiol Environment

The gold nanosensors based on the Au-S bond have been widely applied to biochemical detections. However, signal distortion caused by biothiols has been seldom mentioned and urgently needs to be solved. Herein, we designed a novel but easily assembled gold nanoprobe by coupling a selenol-modified peptide with FITC onto the gold nanoparticle's surface via an Au-Se bond for fluorescence imaging of a tumor marker matrix, metalloproteinases 2 (MMP-2). Compared to the Au-S probes, the Au-Se probes display high thermal stability and a very good anti-interference ability toward glutathione under simulated physiological conditions. More importantly, the Au-Se nanoprobe exhibits a high-fidelity fluorescent signal toward MMP-2, effectively avoiding interference caused by high levels of thiol compounds in vivo. In addition, in vivo experiments further proved that no significant signal intensity change for the tumor cells treated by the Au-Se probes was observed before and after eliminating glutathione. Hence, we believe such Au-Se probes with in vivo glutathione interfering resistance offer new routes and perspectives in biology and medicine in the future.

Asymmetrically Curved Hyperbolic Metamaterial Structure with Gradient Thicknesses for Enhanced Directional Spontaneous Emission

We demonstrate hyperbolic metamaterials (HMMs) on a curved surface for an efficient outcoupling of nonradiative modes, which lead to an enhanced spontaneous emission. Those high-wavevector plasmonic modes can propagate along the curved structure and emit into the far field, realizing a directional light emission with maximal fluorescent intensity. Detailed simulations disclose a high Purcell factor and a spatial power distribution in the curved HMM, which agrees with the experimental result. Our work presents remarkable enhancing capability in both the Purcell factor and emission intensity, which could suggest a unique structure design in metamaterials for potential application in, e.g., high-speed optical sensing and communications.
