Polymer-Assisted Single Crystal Engineering of Organic Semiconductors To Alter Electron Transport

Organic Donor-Acceptor Complexes As Potential Semiconducting Materials

In this review article, the synthesis, characterization and physico-chemical properties of the organic donor-acceptor complexes are highlighted and a special emphasis has been placed on developing them as semiconducting materials. The electron-rich molecules, i. e., donors have been broadly grouped in three categories, namely polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, nitrogen heterocycles and sulphur containing aromatic donors. The reactions of these classes of the donors with the acceptors, namely tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ), tetracyanoethylene (TCNE), tetracyanobenzene (TCNB), benzoquinone, pyromellitic dianhydride and pyromellitic diimides, fullerenes, phenazine, benzothiadiazole, naphthalimide, DMAD, maleic anhydride, viologens and naphthalene diimide are described. The potential applications of the resulting DA complexes for physico-electronic purposes are also included. The theoretical investigation of many of these products with a view to rationalise their observed physico-chemical properties is also discussed.

Crystallization Control of N,N'-Dioctyl Perylene Diimide by Amphiphilic Block Copolymers Containing poly(3-Hexylthiophene) and Polyethylene Glycol

The preparation of micron- to nanometer-sized functional materials with well-defined shapes and packing is a key process to their applications. There are many ways to control the crystal growth of organic semiconductors. Adding polymer additives has been proven a robust strategy to optimize semiconductor crystal structure and the corresponding optoelectronic properties. We have found that poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) can effectively regulate the crystallization behavior of N,N'-dioctyl perylene diimide (C8PDI). In this study, we combined P3HT and polyethylene glycol (PEG) to amphiphilic block copolymers and studied the crystallization modification effect of these block copolymers. It is found that the crystallization modification effect of the block copolymers is retained and gradually enhanced with P3HT content. The length of C8PDI crystals were well controlled from 2 to 0.4 μm, and the width from 210 to 35 nm. On the other hand, due to the water solubility of PEG block, crystalline PEG-b-P3HT/C8PDI micelles in water were successfully prepared, and this water phase colloid could be stable for more than 2 weeks, which provides a new way to prepare pollution-free aqueous organic semiconductor inks for printing electronic devices.

Charge Transfer Complexes of Ketotifen with 2,3-Dichloro-5,6-dicyano-p-benzoquinone and 7,7,8,8-Tetracyanoquodimethane: Spectroscopic Characterization Studies

The reactions of ketotifen fumarate (KT) with 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-p-benzoquinone (DDQ) and 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) as π acceptors to form charge transfer (CT) complexes were evaluated in this study. Experimental and theoretical approaches, including density function theory (DFT), were used to obtain the comprehensive, reliable, and accurate structure elucidation of the developed CT complexes. The CT complexes (KT-DDQ and KT-TCNQ) were monitored at 485 and 843 nm, respectively, and the calibration curve ranged from 10 to 100 ppm for KT-DDQ and 2.5 to 40 ppm for KT-TCNQ. The spectrophotometric methods were validated for the determination of KT, and the stability of the CT complexes was assessed by studying the corresponding spectroscopic physical parameters. The molar ratio of KT:DDQ and KT:TCNQ was estimated at 1:1 using Job's method, which was compatible with the results obtained using the Benesi-Hildebrand equation. Using these complexes, the quantitative determination of KT in its dosage form was successful.

Three co-crystal compounds with different dimensions were synthesized. The fluorescence properties of co-crystal 1 were studied, especially detecting balsalazide disodium.

Multifunctional Features of Organic Charge-Transfer Complexes: Advances and Perspectives

The recent progress of charge-transfer complexes (CTCs) for application in many fields, such as charge transport, light emission, nonlinear optics, photoelectric conversion, and external stimuli response, makes them promising candidates for practical utility in pharmaceuticals, electronics, photonics, luminescence, sensors, molecular electronics and so on. Multicomponent CTCs have been gradually designed and prepared as novel organic active semiconductors with ideal performance and stability compared to single components. In this review, we mainly focus on the recently reported development of various charge-transfer complexes and their performance in field-effect transistors, light-emitting devices, lasers, sensors, and stimuli-responsive behaviors.

Polymer-Controlled Growth and Wrapping of Perovskite Single Crystals Leading to Better Device Stability and Performance

A commodity-scale polymer is used for controlling the nucleation and growth of single crystals of organolead halide perovskite. The polymer [polystyrene (PS)] cross-links and strongly interacts with PbI₂ and MAI (MAPbI₃ perovskite precursors) resulting in the control of the crystallization process. The PS concentration modulates the nucleation time, crystal size, and the number of perovskite single crystals. In addition, the PS-based MAPbI₃ crystals show an enhanced performance as well as improved thermal and environmental stability. Specifically, the PS-MAPbI₃ crystals show 3 times higher photocurrent than plain MAPbI₃ crystals and maintain a stable structure for more than 50 days (1200 h) under continuous 0.1 sun illumination in the air with a relative humidity of 40-45%. The improved performance and stability are attributed to the direct interaction between the PS and perovskite, which greatly reduces the ion migration, defect traps, and charge recombination and improves the carrier mobility and lifetime.

Nucleation Control-Triggering Cocrystal Polymorphism of Charge-Transfer Complexes Differing in Physical and Electronic Properties

Binary charge-transfer complex polymorphs composed of perylene and 4,8-bis(dicyanomethylene)-4,8-dihydrobenzo-[1,2-b:4,5-b']-dithiophene (DTTCNQ) were synthesized separately via a simple artificial nucleation-tailoring method, in both macroscopic and microscopic cocrystal engineering manners. The two polymorphs were testified to be independently thermosalient in the solid state, and the specific self-assembly derived from homogeneous or heterogeneous nucleation by assistance of governable thermodynamic/kinetic drive, leading to a change in the ordered p-n stacking structure. The as-prepared polymorphic microcrystals afforded a significantly varied (opto)electronic property: high n-type transporting and good photoresponsivity for β-complex, and ambipolar transporting with ignorable photoresponsivity for α-complex, attributing to the different charge-transfer and supramolecular alignment. This work provides us a new route to the exploitation of donor-acceptor complex family, making it possible to develop functional materials and devices based on variable supramolecular binary structures.

Recent progress in the usage of tetrabromo-substituted naphthalenetetracarboxylic dianhydride as a building block to construct organic semiconductors and their applications

The recent synthetic strategies and significant applications of TBNDA and their derivatives as promising building blocks to construct π-expanded semiconductors have been carefully summarized in this review.

Configuration-Controllable E/Z Isomers Based on Tetraphenylethene: Synthesis, Characterization, and Applications

Configuration-controllable E/Z isomers based on tetraphenylethene were prepared with a facile and effective method. First, compounds 1 and 2, configuration-controllable precursors of E/Z isomers, were synthesized. Then, pure E/Z isomers were obtained via Suzuki reaction, avoiding the difficulties of separation. The conformational changes of E/Z isomers can occur through photoactivation. Importantly, red-shifts of 66 nm from 6 (E-) to 3 (Z-) and 58 nm from 7 (E-) to 4 (Z-) were observed remarkably on the photoluminescence (PL) emission spectra. The Z isomer showed a longer fluorescence lifetime compared with the E isomer. The Z isomers 3 and 4 exhibited piezofluorochromism under grinding, whereas the E isomers 6 and 7 showed no such behaviors. The E isomer has better thermal stability than the Z isomer. Lastly, graphene-like molecules were synthesized with the FeCl₃/CH₃NO₂ system. The E and Z isomers after oxidation showed negligible differences in the PL emission spectra because the effective conjugated lengths of oxidized E and Z isomers were both extended. Furthermore, the fabricated field-effect transistors showed nice performance with mobilities of 0.92 and 1.14 cm^-2 V^-1 s^-1 at low operating voltages, respectively.

Singlet fission in self-assembled PDI nanocrystals

Upon photoexcitation, self-assembled PDI nanocrystals (S1S0) in the form of rods of 70 nm width and 1 μm length are subject to a symmetry breaking charge separation (SBCS) as the first step in the singlet fission (SF) sequence. Hereby, the correlated pair of triplet excited states 1(T1T1) is formed with a quantum yield of 122%. Decoherence and triplet diffusion within the nanocrystals affords a long-lived, uncorrelated pair of triplet excited states (T1 + T1) with a quantum yield of 24%.
