Metal-Organic Framework-Derived Co3O4/Au Heterostructure as a Catalyst for Efficient Oxygen Reduction

Pt/Au Nanoparticles@Co3O4 Cataluminescence Sensor for Rapid Analysis of Methyl Sec-Butyl Ether Impurity in Methyl Tert-Butyl Ether Gasoline Additive

High purity methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) can be used to adjust gasoline octane values. However, an isomer, methyl sec-butyl ether (MSBE), is the main by-product of its industrial production, and this affects the purity of MTBE. Pt/Au NPs@Co3O4 composites with a hollow dodecahedron three-dimensional structure were synthesized using ZIF-67 as a template, with Pt and Au nanoparticles (NPs) evenly distributed on the shell of the hollow structure. A CTL sensor was established for the determination of MSBE based on the specificity of Pt/Au NPs@Co3O4. The experimental results showed that Pt/Au NPs@Co3O4 had a strong specific cataluminescence (CTL) response to MSBE, with no interference from MTBE. The linear range was 0.10–90 mg/L, the limit of detection was 0.031 mg/L (S/N = 3), the RSD was 2.5% (n = 9), and a complete sample test could be completed in five minutes. The sensor was used to detect MSBE in MTBE of different purity grades, with recoveries ranging from 92.0% to 109.2%, and the analytical results were consistent with those determined by gas chromatography. These results indicate that the established method was accurate and reliable, and could be used for rapid analysis of MTBE gasoline additive.

Enhanced electrocatalytic activity of PtRu/nitrogen and sulphur co-doped crumbled graphene in acid and alkaline media

The low mass activity and high price of pure platinum (Pt)-based catalysts predominantly limit their large-scale utilization in electrocatalysis. Therefore, the reduction of Pt amount while preserving the electrocatalytic efficiency represents a viable alternative. In this work, we prepared new PtRu₂ nanoparticles supported on sulphur and nitrogen co-doped crumbled graphene with trace amounts of iron (PtRu₂/PF) electrocatalysts. The PtRu₂/PF catalysts exhibited enhanced electrocatalytic performance and stability for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) at pH = 0. Moreover, the prepared PtRu₂/PF electrocatalyst displayed higher HER activity than commercial 20% Pt/C. The PtRu₂/PF catalyst achieved a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 at an overpotential value of only 22 mV for HER, performing better activity than many other Pt-based electrocatalysts. Besides, the PtRu₂/PF revealed a good performance for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media. The PtRu₂/PF catalyst recorded a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 at an overpotential of only 270 mV for OER in KOH (1.0 M) solution and an onset potential of 0.96 V vs. RHE (at 1 mA cm^-2) for ORR in KOH (0.1 M) solution.

Application of Core/Shell Nanoparticles in Smart Farming: A Paradigm Shift for Making the Agriculture Sector More Sustainable

Modern agriculture has entered an era of technological plateau where intervention of smarter technology like nanotechnology is imminently required for making this sector economically and environmentally sustainable. Throughout the world, researchers are trying to exploit the novel properties of several nanomaterials to make agricultural practices more efficient. Core/shell nanoparticles (CSNs) have attracted much attention because of their multiple attractive novel features like high catalytic, optical, and electronic properties for which they are being widely used in sensing, imaging, and medical applications. Though it also has the promise to solve a number of issues related to agriculture, its full potential still remains mostly unexplored. This review provides a panoramic view on application of CSNs in solving several problems related to crop production and precision farming practices where the wastage of resources can be minimized. This review also summarizes different classes of CSNs and their synthesis techniques. It emphasizes and analyzes the probable potential applications of CSNs in the field of crop improvement and crop protection, detection of plant diseases and agrochemical residues, and augmentation of chloroplast mediated photosynthesis. In a nutshell, there is enormous scope to formulate and design CSN-based smart tools for applications in agriculture, making this sector more sustainable.

Self-supported beaded Au@Co3O4 nanowire arrays perform electrocatalytic CO2 reduction in water to syngas and water oxidation to O2

Beaded Au@Co₃O₄ nanowire arrays were prepared and function as a bifunctional electrocatalyst with outstanding electrochemical performance in producing syngas and the oxygen evolution reaction.

Exterior and Internal Uniform Loading of Pt Nanoparticles on Yolk-Shell La2O3 by Acoustic Levitation Synthesis with Enhanced Photocatalytic Performance

By the deposition of noble metal nanoparticles on a metal oxide substrate with a specific micro-/nanostructure, namely, yolk-shell structure, a remarkable improvement in photocatalytic performance can be achieved by the composites. Nevertheless, noble metal nanoparticles only distribute on the surface shell of metal oxide substrates when the conventional wet-chemistry reduction approach is employed. Herein, we proposed a novel acoustic levitation synthesis of Pt nanoparticles deposited on yolk-shell La₂O₃. The composites not only displayed well-defined, homogeneous distribution of Pt NPs on the exterior shell of La₂O₃ and the interior La₂O₃ core, but an enhanced chemical interaction between Pt and La₂O₃. The unique structure not only can display improved photocatalytic degradation rate toward methyl orange, but also may show great potential in fields of hydrogen generation, environmental protection, etc. The novel acoustic levitation synthesis can supplement the methodology of synthesizing well dispersed noble metal oxides over the whole yolk-shell structure through noble metal NPs deposition method.

Facile synthesis of metal-organic framework-derived SiW12@Co3O4 and its peroxidase-like activity in colorimetric assay

Over the past few years, artificial enzymes have attracted enormous attention due to their high stabilities and cost-effective productions. In this work, metal-organic framework-derived SiW₁₂@Co₃O₄ was synthesized in large quantities by stirring the mixture at ambient temperature and calcination. The obtained SiW₁₂@Co₃O₄ exhibited a highly inherent peroxidase-like activity and excellent stability. Kinetic studies demonstrated that the synthesized SiW₁₂@Co₃O₄ had a strong binding affinity to 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB), stronger than HRP had. Specifically, the peroxidase-like activity of SiW₁₂@Co₃O₄ in an aqueous solution was well maintained after incubation at an elevated temperature, at an extreme pH and for a long time. A SiW₁₂@Co₃O₄-based method was further developed for H₂O₂ and one-pot glucose detection with good sensitivity and reliability. The facile synthesis approach is expected to facilitate the practical use of metal-organic frameworks and their derivatives as enzyme mimics in the future.

Optimized Synthesis of Nitrogen and Phosphorus Dual-Doped Coal-Based Carbon Fiber Supported Pd Catalyst with Enhanced Activities for Formic Acid Electrooxidation

Development of a Pd-based catalyst with highly active and durable properties for formic acid oxidation reaction at the anode remains an important matter of interest in the research community. Herein, we have designed novel coal-based carbon fibers (Coal-CFs) with dicyandiamide (DCD) as nitrogen (N) source, triphenylphosphine (TPP) as phosphorus (P) source dual-doped to support Pd catalysts (Pd/NP-Coal-CFs(DCD/TPP)), which exhibit superior catalytic performance toward formic acid oxidation reaction. Mass activity of formic acid oxidation of Pd/NP-Coal-CFs(DCD/TPP) catalyst is 536.6 mA·mg^-1_Pd, which is 2.5 times higher than that of Pd/Coal-CFs catalyst. The higher specific surface areas, exclusive electron transport path, and the high synergistic interaction of N and P are the favorable phenomena for catalytic performance. The addition of coal not only increases the abundant defects sites but also makes the utilization of coal with high added value. This N and P dual-doped catalyst inspires an idea for promoting applications in practical fuel cells.

Fine Co nanoparticles encapsulated in N-doped porous carbon for efficient oxygen reduction

Through the acid pickling of Co@NPC, which was obtained by one-step calcination of ZIF-67 in N₂ and condition optimization of Co nanoparticle sizes, a catalyst of fine Co nanoparticles encapsulated in N-doped porous carbon with excellent ORR performance was prepared.
