Synergistic Effect of Doping and Compositing on Photocatalytic Efficiency: A Case Study of La2Ti2O7

Ag3PO4-anchored La2Ti2O7 nanorod as a Z-Scheme heterostructure composite with boosted photogenerated carrier separation and enhanced photocatalytic performance under natural sunlight

Developing wide spectra-responsive photocatalysts has attracted considerable attention in the photocatalytic technology to achieve excellent catalytic activity. Ag₃PO₄, with strong response to light spectra shorter than 530 nm, shows extremely outstanding photocatalytic oxidation ability. Unfortunately, the photocorrosion of Ag₃PO₄ is still the biggest obstacle to its application. Herein, the La₂Ti₂O₇ nanorod was used to anchor Ag₃PO₄ nanoparticles in this study, and a novel Z-Scheme La₂Ti₂O₇/Ag₃PO₄ heterostructure composite was constructed. Remarkably, the composite showed strong responsive to most of the spectra in natural sunlight. The Ag⁰ formed in-situ acted as the recombination center of photogenerated carriers, which promoted their efficient separation and contributed to the improved photocatalytic performance of the heterostructure. When the mass ratio of Ag₃PO₄ in the La₂Ti₂O₇/Ag₃PO₄ catalyst was 50%, the degradation rate constant of Rhodamine B (RhB), methyl orange (MO), chloroquine phosphate (CQ), tetracycline (TC), and phenol under natural sunlight irradiation were 0.5923, 0.4463, 0.1399, 0.0493, and 0.0096 min^-1, respectively. Furthermore, the photocorrosion of the composite was greatly inhibited, 76.49% of CQ and 83.96% of RhB were still degraded after four cycles. Besides, the holes and O₂^•- played a significant role in RhB degradation, and it included multiple mechanisms of deethylation, deamination, decarboxylation, and cleavage of ring-structures. Moreover, the treated solution can also show safety to the water receiving environment. Overall, the synthesized Z-Scheme La₂Ti₂O₇/Ag₃PO₄ composite exhibited immense potential for removing various organic pollutants through photocatalytic technology under natural sunlight irradiation.

Developing sustainable, high-performance perovskites in photocatalysis: design strategies and applications

Solar energy is attractive because it is free, renewable, abundant and sustainable. Photocatalysis is one of the feasible routes to utilize solar energy for the degradation of pollutants and the production of fuel. Perovskites and their derivatives have received substantial attention in both photocatalytic wastewater treatment and energy production because of their highly tailorable structural and physicochemical properties. This review illustrates the basic principles of photocatalytic reactions and the application of these principles to the design of robust and sustainable perovskite photocatalysts. It details the structures of the perovskites and the physics and chemistry behind photocatalytic reactions and describes the advantages and limitations of popular strategies for the design of photoactive perovskites. This is followed by examples of how these strategies are applied to enhance the photocatalytic efficiency of oxide, halide and oxyhalide perovskites, with a focus on materials with potential for practical application, that is, not containing scarce or toxic elements. It is expected that this overview of the development of photocatalysts and deeper understanding of photocatalytic principles will accelerate the exploitation of efficient perovskite photocatalysts and bring about effective solutions to the energy and environmental crisis.

In-situ self-assembly construction of hollow tubular g-C3N4 isotype heterojunction for enhanced visible-light photocatalysis: Experiments and theories

A highly reactive hollow tubular g-C₃N₄ isotype heterojunction (SCN-CN) was designed to enhance visible light absorption and manipulate the directed transfer of electrons and holes. The results of UV-vis DRS, XPS valence band and DFT theoretical calculations indicated S doping increases the visible-light absorption capacity and changed the ba nd gap structure of g-C₃N₄ (CN), resulting in the transfer of electrons from the CN to the SCN and holes from the SCN to the CN under visible light. In addition, the tubular structure of the SCN-CN facilitated the transfer of electrons in the longitudinal direction, which reduced charge carrier recombination. Furthermore, the optical properties, electronic structure, and electron transfer of SCN-CN were also studied by experiments and theoretical calculations. The antibiotic tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) and dye Rhodamine B (RHB) were subjected to evaluate the photocatalytic performance of SCN-CN. The scavenger tests and ESR data showed that the h⁺, ·O₂^- and ·OH worked together in the photocatalytic process. Moreover, the photocatalytic degradation pathway was analyzed by LC-MS. This study synthesized a hollow tubular CN isotype heterojunction with high visible-light photocatalytic performance and provided a theoretical basis for CN isotype heterojunction.

The relationship between microstructure and photocatalytic behavior in lanthanum-modified 2D TiO2 nanosheets upon annealing of a freeze-cast precursor

Titanium dioxide modified with 3 wt% La was prepared via a green freeze-casting method, and its photocatalytic activity was tested in terms of its ability to degrade 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) and remove total organic carbon (TOC). Under annealing conditions, the freeze-cast precursor was transformed into an La-modified anatase with a well-defined 2D TiO₂ nanosheet morphology. Rietveld refinement of the X-ray diffraction patterns confirmed the substitutional nature of the La cation that induced local structural variations and involved subtle ion displacement in the TiO₂ lattice due to the ionic size effect. Despite nearly identical tetragonal structures, replacement of Ti with La alters the photocatalytic activity through a reduction in band gap energies and an increase in charge carrier mobility. Material annealed at 650 °C exhibited the highest photocatalytic performance and achieved efficient TOC removal. Upon annealing at 800 °C, nanoscale lanthanum-enriched regions were generated due to the diffusive migration of La cations and phase transition from anatase to rutile. The La³⁺ cation, acting as a structural promoter, supported 2D TiO₂ growth with well controlled crystallite size, surface area and porosity. La³⁺ could be regarded as a potential electronic promoter that can reduce the band gap of 2D TiO₂ nanosheets and can provide a signature of the electron transfer and carrier charge separation. Both methods, kinetics of degradation of 4-CP and TOC, provided similar results, revealing that the photocatalytic activity under UV light irradiation increased in the order 950C < 500 °C < 800 °C < 650 °C < TiO₂-P25.
