Electrodeposited Epitaxial Cu(100) on Si(100) and Lift-Off of Single Crystal-like Cu(100) Foils

Electrosynthesis of Quasi-Epitaxial Crystals on Liquid Metals

Electrosynthesis of single-crystalline metallic and intermetallic particles with a preferred orientation onto liquid metal electrodes has been performed. Liquid gallium electrodes immersed in aqueous alkaline electrolytes without any molecular additive or external solid seeding substrates were used to electroreduce separately Pb2+, Bi3+, Pd2+, and Mn2+. The crystallinity, composition, and orientation of the electrodeposition products were characterized by using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, grazing incidence X-ray diffraction, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Electrodeposition of Pb and Bi results in the incipient formation of two-dimensional (2D) nuclei that subsequently direct the growth of Pb and Bi single crystals along the most close-packed [111] and [0001] directions, respectively. The absence of any intervening surface oxides and a low electroreduction flux are necessary to avoid polycrystalline dendrite formation. Under comparable conditions, the electrodeposition of Pd and Mn results in single-crystalline intermetallic particles at the interface. Each crystal exhibits a preferred orientation consistent with the unique atomic packing of the near-surface region of the liquid Ga. The presented study suggests a new concept in electrodeposition processes where the liquid metal structure imparts quasi-epitaxial growth in a system in which the electrode material specifically has no crystallinity or long-range order. This study is thus the first demonstration of highly oriented electrodeposition at a liquid/liquid interface under ambient conditions, highlighting the unique solvation environment of liquid metal interfaces for forming thin metallic and intermetallic films.

Epitaxial Electrodeposition of Ordered Inorganic Materials

ConspectusThe quality of technological materials generally improves as the crystallographic order is increased. This is particularly true in semiconductor materials, as evidenced by the huge impact that bulk single crystals of silicon have had on electronics. Another approach to producing highly ordered materials is the epitaxial growth of crystals on a single-crystal surface that determines their orientation. Epitaxy can be used to produce films and nanostructures of materials with a level of perfection that approaches that of single crystals. It may be used to produce materials that cannot be grown as large single crystals due to either economic or technical constraints. Epitaxial growth is typically limited to ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) techniques such as molecular beam epitaxy and other vapor deposition methods. In this Account, we will discuss the use of electrodeposition to produce epitaxial films of inorganic materials in aqueous solution under ambient conditions. In addition to lower capital costs than UHV deposition, electrodeposition offers additional levels of control due to solution additives that may adsorb on the surface, solution pH, and, especially, the applied overpotential. We show, for instance, that chiral morphologies of the achiral materials CuO and calcite can be produced by electrodepositing the materials in the presence of chiral agents such as tartaric acid.Inorganic compound materials are electrodeposited by an electrochemical-chemical mechanism in which solution precursors are electrochemically oxidized or reduced in the presence of molecules or ions that react with the redox product to form an insoluble species that deposits on the electrode surface. We present examples of reaction schemes for the electrodeposition of transparent hole conductors such as CuI and CuSCN, the magnetic material Fe₃O₄, oxygen evolution catalysts such as Co(OH)₂, CoOOH, and Co₃O₄, and the n-type semiconducting oxide ZnO. These materials can all be electrodeposited as epitaxial films or nanostructures onto single-crystal surfaces. Examples of epitaxial growth are given for the growth of films of CuI(111) on Si(111) and nanowires of CuSCN(001) on Au(111). Both are large mismatch systems, and the epitaxy is explained by invoking coincidence site lattices in which x unit meshes of the film overlap with y unit meshes of the substrate.We also discuss the epitaxial lift-off of single-crystal-like foils of metals such as Au(111) and Cu(100) that can be used as flexible substrates for the epitaxial growth of semiconductors. The metals are grown on a Si wafer with a sacrificial SiO_x interlayer that can be removed by chemical etching. The goal is to move beyond the planar structure of conventional Si-based chips to produce flexible electronic devices such as wearable solar cells, sensors, and flexible displays. A scheme is shown for the epitaxial lift-off of wafer-scale foils of the transparent hole conductor CuSCN.Finally, we offer some perspectives on possible future work in this area. One question we have not answered in our previous work is whether these epitaxial films and nanostructures can be grown with the level of perfection that is achieved in UHV. Another area that is ripe for exploration is the epitaxial electrodeposition of metal-organic framework materials from solution precursors.

Single-Site Metal-Organic Framework and Copper Foil Tandem Catalyst for Highly Selective CO2 Electroreduction to C2 H4

Tandem catalysis is a promising way to break the limitation of linear scaling relationship for enhancing efficiency, and the desired tandem catalysts for electrochemical CO₂ reduction reaction (CO₂ RR) are urgent to be developed. Here, a tandem electrocatalyst created by combining Cu foil (CF) with a single-site Cu(II) metal-organic framework (MOF), named as Cu-MOF-CF, to realize improved electrochemical CO₂ RR performance, is reported. The Cu-MOF-CF shows suppression of CH₄ , great increase in C₂ H₄ selectivity (48.6%), and partial current density of C₂ H₄ at -1.11 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode. The outstanding performance of Cu-MOF-CF for CO₂ RR results from the improved microenvironment of the Cu active sites that inhibits CH₄ production, more CO intermediate produced by single-site Cu-MOF in situ for CF, and the enlarged active surface area by porous Cu-MOF. This work provides a strategy to combine MOFs with copper-based electrocatalysts to establish high-efficiency electrocatalytic CO₂ RR.

New Approaches to Produce Large-Area Single Crystal Thin Films

Wafer-scale growth of single crystal thin films of metals, semiconductors, and insulators is crucial for manufacturing high-performance electronic and optical devices, but still challenging from both scientific and industrial perspectives. Recently, unconventional advanced synthetic approaches have been attempted and have made remarkable progress in diversifying the species of producible single crystal thin films. This review introduces several new synthetic approaches to produce large-area single crystal thin films of various materials according to the concepts and principles.

Epitaxial Electrocrystallization of Magnesium via Synergy of Magnesiophilic Interface, Lattice Matching, and Electrostatic Confinement

Rechargeable magnesium batteries are particularly advantageous for renewable energy storage systems. However, the inhomogeneous Mg electrodeposits greatly shorten their cycle life under practical conditions. Herein, the epitaxial electrocrystallization of Mg on a three-dimensional magnesiophilic host is implemented via the synergy of a magnesiophilic interface, lattice matching, and electrostatic confinement effects. The vertically aligned nickel hydroxide nanosheet arrays grown on carbon cloth (abbreviated as "Ni(OH)₂@CC") have been delicately designed, which satisfy the essential prerequisite of a low lattice geometrical misfit with Mg (about 2.8%) to realize epitaxial electrocrystallization. Simultaneously, the ionic crystal nature of Ni(OH)₂ displays a periodic and hillock-like electrostatic potential field over its exposed facets, which can precisely capture and confine the reduced Mg⁰ species onto the local electron-enriched sites at the atomic level. The Ni(OH)₂@CC substrate undergoes sequential Mg-ion intercalation, underpotential deposition, and electrocrystallization processes, during which the uniform, lamellar Mg electrodeposits with a locked crystallographic orientation are formed. Under practical conditions (10 mA cm^-2 and 10 mAh cm^-2), the Ni(OH)₂@CC substrate exhibits stable Mg stripping/plating cycle performances over 600 h, 2 orders of magnitude longer than those of the pristine copper foil and carbon cloth substrates.

Polarized phonons carry angular momentum in ultrafast demagnetization

Magnetic phenomena are ubiquitous in nature and indispensable for modern science and technology, but it is notoriously difficult to change the magnetic order of a material in a rapid way. However, if a thin nickel film is subjected to ultrashort laser pulses, it loses its magnetic order almost completely within femtosecond timescales¹. This phenomenon is widespread^2-7 and offers opportunities for rapid information processing^8-11 or ultrafast spintronics at frequencies approaching those of light^8,9,12. Consequently, the physics of ultrafast demagnetization is central to modern materials research^1-7,13-28, but a crucial question has remained elusive: if a material loses its magnetization within mere femtoseconds, where is the missing angular momentum in such a short time? Here we use ultrafast electron diffraction to reveal in nickel an almost instantaneous, long-lasting, non-equilibrium population of anisotropic high-frequency phonons that appear within 150-750 fs. The anisotropy plane is perpendicular to the direction of the initial magnetization and the atomic oscillation amplitude is 2 pm. We explain these observations by means of circularly polarized phonons that quickly absorb the angular momentum of the spin system before macroscopic sample rotation. The time that is needed for demagnetization is related to the time it takes to accelerate the atoms. These results provide an atomistic picture of the Einstein-de Haas effect and signify the general importance of polarized phonons for non-equilibrium dynamics and phase transitions.

Synthesis of Heterostructured Metallic Films with Precisely Defined Multimodal Microstructures

Heterostructured materials (e.g., metals with multimodal microstructures) offer the promise of unprecedented functionality and performance by avoiding trade-offs between competing properties such as strength and ductility. However, methods to reproducibly synthesize heterostructured materials with explicit microstructural control are still elusive, and therefore optimizing their mechanical and functional properties via microstructural engineering is presently infeasible. Here, we describe a broadly applicable method to synthesize metallic films with precisely defined multimodal microstructures. This method enables explicit control of the size, volume fraction, and spatial connectivity of fine and coarse grains by exploiting two distinct forms of film growth (epitaxial and Volmer-Weber) simultaneously. We fabricated Cu and Fe films with bimodal and multimodal microstructures using this method and investigated their mechanical properties, which reveals a hitherto unknown breakdown in the strength-ductility synergy produced by such microstructures at small sample dimensions. Our approach enables systematic design of multimodal microstructures to tailor the mechanical properties of metallic materials and provides a platform to create functional thin films and 2D materials with prescribed phase morphologies and microstructures.

Polymorph Evolution Mechanisms and Regulation Strategies of Lithium Metal Anode under Multiphysical Fields

Lithium (Li) metal, a typical alkaline metal, has been hailed as the "holy grail" anode material for next generation batteries owing to its high theoretical capacity and low redox reaction potential. However, the uncontrolled Li plating/stripping issue of Li metal anodes, associated with polymorphous Li formation, "dead Li" accumulation, poor Coulombic efficiency, inferior cyclic stability, and hazardous safety risks (such as explosion), remains as one major roadblock for their practical applications. In principle, polymorphous Li deposits on Li metal anodes includes smooth Li (film-like Li) and a group of irregularly patterned Li (e.g., whisker-like Li (Li whiskers), moss-like Li (Li mosses), tree-like Li (Li dendrites), and their combinations). The nucleation and growth of these Li polymorphs are dominantly dependent on multiphysical fields, involving the ionic concentration field, electric field, stress field, and temperature field, etc. This review provides a clear picture and in-depth discussion on the classification and initiation/growth mechanisms of polymorphous Li from the new perspective of multiphysical fields, particularly for irregular Li patterns. Specifically, we discuss the impact of multiphysical fields' distribution and intensity on Li plating behavior as well as their connection with the electrochemical and metallurgical properties of Li metal and some other factors (e.g., electrolyte composition, solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer, and initial nuclei states). Accordingly, the studies on the progress for delaying/suppressing/redirecting irregular Li evolution to enhance the stability and safety performance of Li metal batteries are reviewed, which are also categorized based on the multiphysical fields. Finally, an overview of the existing challenges and the future development directions of metal anodes are summarized and prospected.

Dendrites in Zn-Based Batteries

Aqueous Zn batteries that provide a synergistic integration of absolute safety and high energy density have been considered as highly promising energy-storage systems for powering electronics. Despite the rapid progress made in developing high-performance cathodes and electrolytes, the underestimated but non-negligible dendrites of Zn anode have been observed to shorten battery lifespan. Herein, this dendrite issue in Zn anodes, with regard to fundamentals, protection strategies, characterization techniques, and theoretical simulations, is systematically discussed. An overall comparison between the Zn dendrite and its Li and Al counterparts, to highlight their differences in both origin and topology, is given. Subsequently, in-depth clarifications of the specific influence factors of Zn dendrites, including the accumulation effect and the cathode loading mass (a distinct factor for laboratory studies and practical applications) are presented. Recent advances in Zn dendrite protection are then comprehensively summarized and categorized to generate an overview of respective superiorities and limitations of various strategies. Accordingly, theoretical computations and advanced characterization approaches are introduced as mechanism guidelines and measurement criteria for dendrite suppression, respectively. The concluding section emphasizes future challenges in addressing the Zn dendrite issue and potential approaches to further promoting the lifespan of Zn batteries.

Reversible epitaxial electrodeposition of metals in battery anodes

The propensity of metals to form irregular and nonplanar electrodeposits at liquid-solid interfaces has emerged as a fundamental barrier to high-energy, rechargeable batteries that use metal anodes. We report an epitaxial mechanism to regulate nucleation, growth, and reversibility of metal anodes. The crystallographic, surface texturing, and electrochemical criteria for reversible epitaxial electrodeposition of metals are defined and their effectiveness demonstrated by using zinc (Zn), a safe, low-cost, and energy-dense battery anode material. Graphene, with a low lattice mismatch for Zn, is shown to be effective in driving deposition of Zn with a locked crystallographic orientation relation. The resultant epitaxial Zn anodes achieve exceptional reversibility over thousands of cycles at moderate and high rates. Reversible electrochemical epitaxy of metals provides a general pathway toward energy-dense batteries with high reversibility.
