Plasmonic-Enhanced Luminescence Characteristics of Microscale Phosphor Layers on a ZnO Nanorod-Arrayed Glass Substrate

Nanostructuration of YAG:Ce Coatings by ZnO Nanowires: A Smart Way to Enhance Light Extraction Efficiency

In this study, we report on the enhancement of the light extraction efficiency of sol-gel-derived Y₃Al₅O₁₂:Ce³⁺ (YAG:Ce) coatings using ZnO nanowire (NW) arrays. The ZnO NWs were grown by hydrothermal synthesis from a ZnO seed layer directly deposited on a YAG:Ce coating. Highly dense and vertically aligned ZnO NW arrays were evidenced on the top of the YAG:Ce coating by electron microscopy. A photoluminescence study showed that this original design leads to a different angular distribution of light together with an increase in emission efficiency of the YAG:Ce coating upon blue excitation, up to 60% more efficient compared to a non-structured YAG:Ce coating (without NWs). These improvements are ascribed to multi-scattering events for photons within the structure, allowing them to escape from the phosphor layer by taking optical paths different from those of the non-structured coating. This strategy of light extraction enhancement appears to be very promising, since it uses soft chemical processes and cheap ZnO NWs and is applicable to any sol-gel-derived luminescent coating.

Additive Production of a Material Based on an Acrylic Polymer with a Nanoscale Layer of Zno Nanorods Deposited Using a Direct Current Magnetron Discharge: Morphology, Photoconversion Properties, and Biosafety

On the basis of a direct current magnetron, a technology has been developed for producing nanoscale-oriented nanorods from zinc oxide on an acrylic polymer. The technology makes it possible to achieve different filling of the surface with zinc oxide nanorods. The nanorods is partially fused into the polymer; the cross section of the nanorods is rather close to an elongated ellipse. It is shown that, with intense abrasion, no delamination of the nanorods from the acrylic polymer is observed. The zinc oxide nanorods abrades together with the acrylic polymer. Zinc oxide nanorods luminesces with the wavelength most preferable for the process of photosynthesis in higher plants. It was shown that plants grown under the obtained material grow faster and gain biomass faster than the control group. In addition, it was found that on surfaces containing zinc oxide nanorods, a more intense formation of such reactive oxygen species as hydrogen peroxide and hydroxyl radical is observed. Intensive formation of long-lived, active forms of the protein is observed on the zinc oxide coating. The formation of 8-oxoguanine in DNA in vitro on a zinc oxide coating was shown using ELISA method. It was found that the multiplication of microorganisms on the developed material is significantly hampered. At the same time, eukaryotic cells of animals grow and develop without hindrance. Thus, the material we have obtained can be used in photonics (photoconversion material for greenhouses, housings for LEDs), and it is also an affordable and non-toxic nanomaterial for creating antibacterial coatings.

Advanced Dynamic Photoluminescent Material for Dynamic Anticounterfeiting and Encryption

Anticounterfeiting is a vitally important issue in modern society. At present, the most commonly used luminescent anticounterfeiting technique is based on static photoluminescence (PL), which is easily counterfeited by certain substitutes. In this work, we report for the first time a dynamic PL material, Na₂CaGe₂O₆:Tb³⁺. Irradiated by a portable ultraviolet (254 nm) lamp, the PL color of the material due to Tb³⁺ changes from the initial red to yellow and, finally, green. The investigation reveals that the dynamic PL is due to the presence of appropriate traps and the cross-relaxation effect of Tb³⁺ in Na₂CaGe₂O₆. By employing this unique dynamic PL material, high-level dynamic luminescent anticounterfeiting and encryption devices can be fabricated. The dynamic PL features of the devices are easily detected using a cheap portable lamp, and at present, it is impossible for the features to be faked by any substitutes. In a virtual military scenario, the results demonstrate that the encryption device is safe and that a spy will be detected. Accordingly, this dynamic PL material could inspire more ingenious security designs.

Enhancement of efficiency and CCT uniformity for red phosphor thin films, red LEDs and laminated white LEDs based on near-ultraviolet LEDs using MgO nanoparticles

Red phosphor thin films (PTFs) with different MgO nanoparticle concentrations for near-ultraviolet (NUV) LEDs were prepared based on their strong scattering effect; red LEDs and laminated white LEDs were packaged further. SEM and XRD showed that CaAlSiN₃:Eu²⁺ (CASN) and MgO nanoparticles were uniformly distributed in silicone resin and their crystal structure remained unchanged. The phosphor conversion efficiency (PCE) had a maximum value of 83.15% when the MgO nanoparticle concentration was 15 wt%. An increase of concentration can improve the spatial distribution uniformity of photonics for 410 nm, 627 nm and 660 nm. Fluorescence lifetime showed that the value is positively correlated with concentration change. The packaged red LED luminous flux reaches a maximum of 20.337 lm at a concentration of 15 wt%. The laminated white LED showed that the MgO nanoparticle concentration can be used to adjust the correlated color temperature (CCT) from 4322 K to 1987 K. Under similar CCT, the red phosphor concentration is only 1.83 wt%, the dosage is reduced by 56.12%, and the corresponding luminous efficiency of radiation (LER) and luminous efficiency (LE) are 296.03 lm W⁻¹ and 73.72 lm W⁻¹ respectively. The increase was 11.42%, the decrease was 10.14%, the color rendering index (CRI) increased from 90.6 to 91.8, and CCT uniformity increased from 82.04% to 89.27% with an increase of 8.81%. Research shows that MgO nanoparticles have potential application value in the preparation of high-quality white LEDs.
