Atomic-Thick TiO2(B) Nanosheets Decorated with Ultrafine Co3O4 Nanocrystals As a Highly Efficient Catalyst for Lithium-Oxygen Battery

A Unique Nanoflake-Shape Bimetallic Ti-Nb Oxide of Superior Catalytic Effect for Hydrogen Storage of MgH2

MgH₂ is one of the most promising solid hydrogen storage materials due to its high capacity, excellent reversibility, and low cost. However, its operation temperature needs to be greatly reduced to realize its practical applications, especially in the highly desired fuel cell fields. This work synthesizes a 2D nanoflake-shape bimetallic Ti-Nb oxide of TiNb₂ O₇ , which has high surface area and shows superior catalytic effect for the hydrogen storage of MgH₂ . Incorporated with the TiNb₂ O₇ nanoflakes as low as 3 wt%, MgH₂ shows a low onset dehydrogenation temperature of 178 °C, which is lowered by 100 °C compared with the pristine one. A dehydrogenation capacity as high as 7.0 wt% H₂ is achieved upon heating to 300 °C. The capacity retention is as high as 96% after 30 cycles. The mechanism of the improved hydrogen storage properties is analyzed by density functional theory (DFT) calculation and the microstructural evolution during dehydrogenation and hydrogenation. This work provides an MgH₂ system with high available capacity and low operation temperature by a unique structural design of the catalyst. The high surface area feature of the TiNb₂ O₇ nanoflakes and the synthesis method hopefully can develop the application of TiNb₂ O₇ .

Formation/Decomposition of Li2O2 Induced by Porous NiCeOx Nanorod Catalysts in Aprotic Lithium-Oxygen Batteries

To realize the utilization of high-performance lithium-oxygen batteries (LOBs), a rational-designed cathode structure and efficient catalytic materials are necessary. However, side products accumulated during battery cycling seriously affects the performance. Designing a cathode catalyst that could simultaneously facilitate the catalytic efficiency of the main reaction and inhibit the side reactions will make great sense. Herein, NiCeO_x was proposed for the first time as a bifunctional cathode catalyst material for LOBs. The combined action of NiO and CeO₂ components was expected to facilitate the decomposition of byproducts (e.g., Li₂CO₃), increase the oxygen vacancy content in CeO₂, and enhance the adsorption of oxygen and superoxide. NiCeO_x nanorods (NiCeO_x PNR) were prepared using electrospinning method. It showed a hollow and porous nanorod (PNR)-like structure, which provided a large number of catalytic active sites and facilitated the transport of reactants and the deposition of discharge products. As a result, a high specific discharge capacity (2175.9 mAh g^-1) and a long lifespan (67 cycles at 100 mA g^-1 with a limited capacity of 500 mAh g^-1) were obtained.

Tuning the oxygen vacancy of mixed multiple oxidation states nanowires for improving Li-air battery performance

Mixed multiple oxidation states CoMoO₄ nanowires (electrocatalysts) with tunable intrinsic oxygen vacancies were fabricated. CoMoO₄ with proper oxygen vacancy can be employed to construct a Li-air battery with a high capacity and stable cyclability. This is possible because CoMoO₄ contains surface oxygen vacancies, which result in the unit of CoMo bond, that is important for electrocatalysts used in Li-air batteries. Both the experimental and theoretical results demonstrate that the surface oxygen vacancies containing CoMoO₄ nanowires have a higher electrocatalytic activity. This shows that the highly efficient electrocatalysts used for Li-air batteries were designed to modify the redox properties of the mixed metal oxide in the catalytic active sites. This successful material design led to an improved strategy for high oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activities based on the fast formation and extinction of ORR products.

Suppressing Redox Shuttle with MXene-Modified Separators for Li-O2 Batteries

Redox mediators (RMs) have been developed as efficient approaches to lower the charge polarization of Li-O₂ batteries. However, the shuttle effect resulting from their soluble nature severely damages the battery performance, causing failure of the RM and anode corrosion. In this work, a chemical binding strategy based on a MXene-modified separator with a 3D porous hierarchical structure design was developed to suppress the I₃^- shutting in LiI-involved Li-O₂ battery. As corroborated by experimental characterizations and theoretical calculations, the abundant -OH terminal groups on the MXene surface functioned as effective binding sites for suppressing the migration of I₃^-, while the 3D porous structure ensured the fast transfer of lithium ions. As a result, the Li-O₂ battery with the MXene-modified separator showed no sign of redox shuttling compared with its counterparts in the full discharge/charge tests. In the meantime, the MXene-modified separator based-cell exhibited a stable cycle life up to 100 cycles, which is 3 times longer than the control samples. We believe that this work could provide insights into the development of separator modification for Li-O₂ batteries with RMs.

Functionalized Hybridization of 2D Nanomaterials

The discovery of graphene and subsequent verification of its unique properties have aroused great research interest to exploit diversified graphene-analogous 2D nanomaterials with fascinating physicochemical properties. Through either physical or chemical doping, linkage, adsorption, and hybridization with other functional species into or onto them, more novel/improved properties are readily created to extend/expand their functionalities and further achieve great performance. Here, various functionalized hybridizations by using different types of 2D nanomaterials are overviewed systematically with emphasis on their interaction formats (e.g., in-plane or inter plane), synergistic properties, and enhanced applications. As the most intensely investigated 2D materials in the post-graphene era, transition metal dichalcogenide nanosheets are comprehensively investigated through their element doping, physical/chemical functionalization, and nanohybridization. Meanwhile, representative hybrids with more types of nanosheets are also presented to understand their unique surface structures and address the special requirements for better applications. More excitingly, the van der Waals heterostructures of diverse 2D materials are specifically summarized to add more functionality or flexibility into 2D material systems. Finally, the current research status and faced challenges are discussed properly and several perspectives are elaborately given to accelerate the rational fabrication of varied and talented 2D hybrids.

Recent Progress on Catalysts for the Positive Electrode of Aprotic Lithium-Oxygen Batteries †

Rechargeable aprotic lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) batteries have attracted significant interest in recent years owing to their ultrahigh theoretical capacity, low cost, and environmental friendliness. However, the further development of Li-O2 batteries is hindered by some ineluctable issues, such as severe parasitic reactions, low energy efficiency, poor rate capability, short cycling life and potential safety hazards, which mainly stem from the high charging overpotential in the positive electrode side. Thus, it is of great significance to develop high-performance catalysts for the positive electrode in order to address these issues and to boost the commercialization of Li-O2 batteries. In this review, three main categories of catalyst for the positive electrode of Li-O2 batteries, including carbon materials, noble metals and their oxides, and transition metals and their oxides, are systematically summarized and discussed. We not only focus on the electrochemical performance of batteries, but also pay more attention to understanding the catalytic mechanism of these catalysts for the positive electrode. In closing, opportunities for the design of better catalysts for the positive electrode of high-performance Li-O2 batteries are discussed.
