Cost-Effective Realization of Multimode Exciton-Polaritons in Single-Crystalline Microplates of a Layered Metal-Organic Framework

An amine decorated MOF for direct capture of CO2 from ambient air

A Zn(II)-based metal-organic framework (MOF) was synthesized by the self-assembly of the dicarboxylate ligand terephthalic acid (TPA), 2-aminoterephthalic acid (NH2-TPA) and N-donor auxiliary ligand 1,4-bis(4-pyridinylmethyl)piperazine (bpmp) using Zn(NO3)2·6H2O under hydrothermal conditions. {[Zn(TPA)0.5(NH2TPA)0.5(bpmp)]·DMF·7H2O}n (framework 1) has an sra topology with a BET surface area of 756 m2 g-1. The microporous nature of the framework is apparent from the significant CO2 adsorption capacities observed at various temperatures: 57 cc g-1 at 283 K, 46 cc g-1 at 293 K, 37 cc g-1 at 303 K, and 30 cc g-1 at 313 K. The considerable CO2 adsorption may be caused by the existence of free carboxylate and amine substituents that interact with the gas molecules and micropores. At room temperature, the activated MOF readily converts CO2 into cyclic carbonates when a suspension of the MOF is bubbled with ambient air and different epoxides under solvent-free conditions. The amine groups located within the pores of the MOF interact with CO2 molecules, enhancing their sorption and conversion to cyclic carbonates. However, due to interpenetration within framework 1, only smaller size epoxides can be accommodated and converted to cyclic carbonates in good yields. Additionally, the effectiveness of the catalyst is further confirmed by the positive outcomes obtained from the hot filtration control test. Grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) molecular simulations were utilized to gain a better understanding of molecular interactions. GCMC results are in line with the experiments. The substantial adsorption of CO2 can be ascribed to the strong intermolecular interactions that occur between the amine groups within the framework and the CO2 molecules.

Triple Threshold Transitions and Strong Polariton Interaction in 2D Layered Metal-Organic Framework Microplates

Room-temperature interaction between light-matter hybrid particles such as exciton-polaritons under extremely low-pump plays a crucial role in future coherent quantum light sources. However, the practical and scalable realization of coherent quantum light sources operating under low-pump remains a challenge because of the insufficient polariton interaction strength. Here, at room temperature, a very large polariton interaction strength is demonstrated, g ≈ 128 ± 21 µeV µm² realized in a 2D nanolayered metal-organic framework (MOF). As a result, a polariton lasing at an extremely low pump fluence of P₁  ≈ 0.01 ± 0.0015 µJ cm^-2 (first threshold) is observed. Interestingly, as pump fluence increases to P₂  ≈ 0.031 ± 0.003 µJ cm^-2 (second threshold), a spontaneous transition to a polariton breakdown region occurs, which has not been reported before. Finally, an ordinary photon lasing occurs at P₃  ≈ 0.11 ± 0.077 µJ cm^-2 (third threshold), or above. These experiments and the theoretical model reveal new insights into the transition mechanisms characterized by three distinct optical regions. This work introduces MOF as a new type of quantum material, with naturally formed polariton cavities, that is a cost-effective and scalable solution to build microscale coherent quantum light sources and polaritonic devices.

Exciton-Polaritons and Their Bose-Einstein Condensates in Organic Semiconductor Microcavities

Exciton-polaritons are half-light, half-matter bosonic quasiparticles formed by strong exciton-photon coupling in semiconductor microcavities. These hybrid particles possess the strong nonlinear interactions of excitons and keep most of the characteristics of the underlying photons. As bosons, above a threshold density they can undergo Bose-Einstein condensation to a polariton condensate phase and exhibit a rich variety of exotic macroscopic quantum phenomena in solids. Recently, organic semiconductors have been considered as a promising material platform for these studies due to their room-temperature stability, good processability, and abundant photophysics and photochemistry. Herein, recent advances of exciton-polaritons and their Bose-Einstein condensates in organic semiconductor microcavities are summarized. First, the basic physics is introduced, and then their emerging applications are highlighted. The remaining questions are also discussed and a personal viewpoint about the potential directions for future research is given.

Impact of the Structural Modification of Diamondoid Cd(II) MOFs on the Nonlinear Optical Properties

A change in the degree of interpenetration (DOI) in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) prompted by heat, pressure, or exchange of solvents is a fascinating phenomenon that can potentially impact the functional properties of MOFs. Structural transformation involving two noncentrosymmetric MOFs with different DOIs provides a rare opportunity to manipulate their optical properties. Herein, we report an unusual single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) transformation of a noncentrosymmetric 7-fold interpenetrated diamondoid (dia) Cd(II) MOF into another noncentrosymmetric but 8-fold interpenetrated dia MOF upon the removal of guest solvents. A hydrogen-bond network formed between the lattice solvents and linker trans-2-(4-pyridyl)-4-vinylbenzoate (pvb) in a 7-fold interpenetrated noncentrosymmetric MOF results in a significant increase in the two-photon absorption cross-section (11 times) as compared to that in the desolvated 8-fold interpenetrated MOF. Also, an increase in the DOI in the noncentrosymmetric crystals strengthened the π···π interaction between the individual diamondoid networks and enhanced the second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) coefficient (deff) by 4.5 times. These results provide a way to manipulate the optical properties of MOFs using a combined strategy of the formation of hydrogen bonds and interpenetration for access to tunable single-crystal NLO devices in an SCSC manner. By changing the experimental conditions, another dia Cd(II) MOF with 4-fold interpenetration can be isolated. In this centrosymmetric MOF, the olefin groups in the backbone of the ligand (pvb) undergo a [2 + 2] cycloaddition reaction quantitatively under UV light but in a non-SCSC fashion.

Strong Coupling Between Plasmons and Molecular Excitons in Metal-Organic Frameworks

This Letter describes strong coupling of densely packed molecular emitters in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and plasmonic nanoparticle (NP) lattices. Porphyrin-derived ligands with small transition dipole moments in an ordered MOF film were grown on Ag NP arrays. Angle-resolved optical measurements of the MOF-NP lattice system showed the formation of a polariton that is lower in energy and does not cross the uncoupled MOF Q₁ band. Modeling predicted the upper polariton energy and a calculated Rabi splitting of 110 meV. The coupling strength was systematically controlled by detuning the plasmon energy by changing the refractive index of the solvents infiltrating the MOF pores. Through transient absorption spectroscopy, we found that the lower polariton decays quickly at shorter time scales (<500 ps) and slowly at longer times because of energy transfer from the upper polariton. This hybrid system demonstrates how MOFs can function as an accessible excitonic material for polariton chemistry.

Anisotropic Two-Photon Absorption and Second Harmonic Generation in Single Crystals of Silver(I) Coordination Complexes

Metal complexes have been gaining attention in recent times over the traditional inorganic materials such as nonlinear optical materials. Here, we report both two-photon absorption (2PA) and second harmonic generation (SHG) from single crystals of two Ag(I) complexes with considerable optical anisotropy. We demonstrate that by controlling the incident light polarization, the tunability between these two nonlinear optical processes can be achieved. The d_eff values of the observed SHG from one complex are determined to be one order of magnitude greater than β-BBO crystals.

Metal-Organic Frameworks of Cu(II) Constructed from Functionalized Ligands for High Capacity H2 and CO2 Gas Adsorption and Catalytic Studies

Two Cu(II)-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) having paddle-wheel secondary building units (SBUs), namely, 1_Me and 1_ipr, were synthesized solvothermally using two new bent di-isophthalate ligands incorporating different substituents. The MOFs showed high porosity (BET surface area, 2191 m²/g for 1_Me and 1402 m²/g for 1_ipr). For 1_Me, very high CO₂ adsorption (98.5 wt % at 195 K, 42.9 wt % at 273 K, 23.3 wt % at 298 K) at 1 bar was found, while for 1_ipr, it was significantly less (14.3 wt % at 298 K and 1 bar, 54.4 wt % at 298 K at 50 bar). 1_Me exhibited H₂ uptake of 3.2 wt % at 77 K and 1 bar of pressure, which compares well with other benchmark MOFs. For 1_ipr, the H₂ uptake was found to be 2.54 wt % under similar experimental conditions. The significant adsorption of H₂ and CO₂ for 1_Me could be due to the presence of micropores as well as unsaturated metal sites in these MOFs besides the presence of substituents that interact with the gas molecules. The experimental adsorption behavior of the MOFs could be justified by theoretical calculations. Additionally, catalytic conversions of CO₂ and CS₂ into useful chemicals like cyclic carbonates, cyclic trithiocarbonates, and cyclic dithiocarbonates could be achieved.
