Abstract
In recent years, aqueous two-phase systems (ATPSs) have been widely used in different fields and have become an increasingly attractive subject due to their application in the separation and purification of biomolecules. In this work, the aqueous phase behavior of ionic liquids (ILs) was modulated by changing the cis-trans structure of the anion in ILs. With the same tetra-butyl-phosphine as the cation, the cis-anion exhibited upper critical solution temperature (UCST) phenomena. In contrast, the trans-anion exhibited lower critical solution temperature (LCST) phenomena. The proposed mechanism shows that the main factors responsible for these phenomena include variations in the dissociation degree with temperature and the steric hindrance of the ILs. This phase behavior combines the chemical equilibrium in a solution with the microstructure of the molecule and is useful for constructing new chemical dynamic equilibria in ATPS. As an example of its application, aqueous solutions of both ILs can be used for the efficient separation and extraction of specific amino acids. The two ATPS systems reported in this work highlight a simple, effective, and environmentally friendly method for separating small biological molecules.

Abstract
Enzyme-instructed self-assembly is an increasingly attractive topic owing to its broad applications in biomaterials and biomedicine. In this work, we report an approach to construct enzyme-responsive aqueous surfactant two-phase (ASTP) systems serving as enzyme substrates by using a cationic surfactant (myristoylcholine chloride) and a series of anionic surfactants. Driven by the hydrophobic interaction and electrostatic attraction, self-assemblies of cationic-anionic surfactant mixtures result in biphasic systems containing condensed lamellar structures and coexisting dilute solutions, which turn into homogeneous aqueous phases in the presence of hydrolase (cholinesterase). The enzyme-sensitive ASTP systems reported in this work highlight potential applications in the active control of biomolecular enrichment/release and visual detection of cholinesterase.

Abstract
Mixed systems of the Gemini cationic surfactant trimethylene-1,3-bis (dodecyldimethylammonium bromide) (12-3-12·2Br-) and the photosensitive additives trans-methoxy sodium cinnamates with different substituent positions (trans-ortho-methoxy cinnamate, trans-OMCA; trans-meta-methoxy cinnamate, trans-MMCA; and trans-para-methoxy cinnamate, trans-PMCA) were selected for investigating the effects of the substituting position of methoxy on the system phase diagram and UV light-responsive behavior of the wormlike micelles. The differences in phase behaviors of the selected systems were analyzed by calculating the potential distribution, molecular volume, and free energy of solvation of cinnamates and the binding energies between photosensitive additives and the surfactant. The photoresponsive behaviors of wormlike micelle solutions formed in the selected systems were studied by the rheological method and UV-vis and H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy; the kinetics of photoisomerization of trans-OMCA, trans-MMCA, and trans-PMCA were studied by first-order derivative spectrophotometry. The results reveal that the methoxy substituent position has a great influence on the phase behavior and photosensitivity of the studied systems. In addition, the photoisomerization of the studied cinnamates follows the first-order opposite reaction laws; the different reaction rates play the decisive role in the photosensitivity of the wormlike micelles. This paper would afford a deeper understanding of the UV light-responsive mechanism at the molecular level and provide essential guidance in preparing smart materials with adjustable light sensitivity.

Abstract
HYPOTHESIS One of the main advances in double-chain surfactant systems has been their progress from the construction of assemblies to the transformation application in medicine and material science, especially to the drug delivery systems. Thus, it is critical to develop stimuli-responsive assemblies based on double-chain surfactants. We predicted that reversible assembly switching can be achieved by manipulation of the ternary host-guest competitive complexation among β-cyclodextrin (β-CD), surfactants, and designed azobenzene (Azo). EXPERIMENTS In this work, Azo was introduced into vesicles using supramolecular assembly strategy. Vesicles are formed only when Azo moieties are in trans-form. UV switching of Azo groups led to fast disruption of the Azo@β-CD complexes and relatively slow disintegration of the vesicles. With the alterative irradiation of UV and Vis light, the photoisomerization of azo group provokes the reversible disassembly and reassembly of vesicles. FINDINGS This photo-responsive supramolecular strategy offered a controllable way to prepare responsive vesicles assembled from complex double-chain surfactants, such as phospholipids, which could be further used in drug delivery systems. This new perspective is instructive for the design and functional use of complex surfactants assembly. Importantly, the study results paved the way for the development of novel light-responsive assembly materials operating in aqueous media and biological field.

Abstract
Low molecular weight gelators (LMWG) have been extensively explored in many research fields due to their unique reversible gel-sol transformation. Intermolecular interactions between LMWG are known as the main driving force for self-assembly. During this self-assembly process, individually analyzing the contribution difference between various intermolecular interactions is crucial to understand the gel properties. Herein, we report 2,5-bis(hexadecylcarbamoyl)terephthalic acid (BHTA) as a LMWG, which could efficiently form a stable organogel with n-hexadecane, diesel, liquid paraffin, and base lubricant oil at a relatively low concentration. To investigate the contribution difference of intermolecular interactions, we first finished FT-IR spectroscopy and XRD experiments. On the basis of the d-spacing, a crude simulation model was built and then subjected to molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Then, we knocked out the energy contribution of the H-bonding interactions and π-π stacking, respectively, to evaluate the intermolecular interactions significantly influencing the stability of the gel system. MD simulations results suggest that the self-assembly of the aggregates was mainly driven by dense H-bonding interactions between carbonyl acid and amide moieties of BHTA, which is consistent with FT-IR data. Moreover, wave function analysis at a quantum level suggested these electrostatic interactions located in the middle of the BHTA molecule were surrounded by strong dispersion attraction originating from a hydrophobic environment. Furthermore, we also confirmed that 2 wt % BHTA was able to form gel lubricant with 150BS. The coefficient of friction (COF) data show that the gel lubricant has a better tribological performance than 150BS base lubricant oil. Finally, XPS was performed and offered valuable information about the lubrication mechanism during the friction.

Abstract
The influence of the alkyl chain length of the ionic liquid surfactants 1-hexadecyl-3-alkyl imidazolium bromide [C16imCn]Br (n = 2-16) on their aggregation behavior with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) in water was studied. The rheological properties, thermostability, and microstructure of the samples were characterized via a combination of rheology, cryo-transmission electron microscopy, polarization optical microscopy, and small-angle X-ray scattering. Upon the addition of SDS, the [C16imCn]Br (n = 2, 4, 6) rodlike micelles transit into the gels with high water content. The effects of molar ratio and alkyl chain length on the viscoelasticity and thermal stability of the SDS/[C16imCn]Br (n = 2, 4, 6) gels were studied. However, the [C16imCn]Br (n = 8, 10, 12, 14, 16) rodlike micelles precipitate with the addition of SDS. The [C16imCn]Br (n = 10, 12, 14, 16) gels transit to the rodlike micelles with the proper addition of SDS. The mechanism of the influence of the alkyl chain length of the [C16imCn]Br on their aggregation behavior with SDS was proposed.
