Abstract
This research involved the different acid-treatment conditions of graphitic carbon nitride and its modified nanostructures through thermal polycondensation of urea at various temperatures. X-ray diffraction patterns revealed that processing at a lower temperature than 500 °C resulted in melem and its derivatives, indicating incomplete transformation of urea to g-C3N4. However, treatment at higher temperatures and the HCl acid treatment led to the formation and expansion of g-C3N4 networks, as evidenced by notable differences in peak intensities observed in their Fourier-transform infrared and Raman spectra. Scanning electron microscopy analysis illustrated a transition from the granular morphology of melamine to the layered structure characteristic of g-C3N4. The nanoparticle morphology observed in the HNO3 acid treatment sample was attributed to the deconjugation of nanosheets through the highly oxidative acid medium. The most suitable photocatalytic activity for Methylene Blue (MB) degradation under UV and visible light illumination was observed for the samples prepared at 550 °C and HCl post-processed nanostructures. It is proposed that the enhanced photocatalytic activity observed in these samples is most likely attributed to the reduced recombination of photogenerated charge carriers facilitated by heterojunctions formed between different intermediate phases. These findings highlight the potential of modified g-C3N4 and its derivatives as promising photocatalytic materials for water purification applications.

Abstract
Na2Ti3O7 (NTO) is recognized as an authenticated promising photocatalyst and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) active material, although its performance is limited by its high carrier recombination rate, wide band gap and inadequate utilization of visible light. In this study, to solve these issues, sea urchin-shaped NTO nanowires directly grown on a substrate were fabricated, and then Ag nanoparticles were decorated on NTO nanowires using sputtering equipment. The as-prepared Ag-NTO substrates exhibited different morphologies and high SERS activity, which was confirmed by finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations, showing that appropriate Ag decoration can bring more nanogaps and thus enhance the electromagnetic field (EM) contribution. We visualized the charge transfer (CT) mechanism in SERS and further investigated the catalytic hydrogen production process similarly induced by photogenerated CT. The optimal SERS substrate (Ag-NTO-3) was adopted to verify the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE) activity, and the hydrogen evolution rate of Ag-NTO-3 was 106.7 μmol h-1 (twice that of pristine NTO). Photoelectrochemical measurements and photoluminescence (PL) analysis were used to elucidate the potential enhancement mechanisms for the photocatalytic performance and CT process. This study can provide a valuable reference for performance and mechanism studies of SERS substrates and photocatalysts.

Abstract
Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4, abbreviated as g-CN) suffers from low visible-light-responsive photocatalytic efficiency. In this study, aromatic benzene rings and black phosphorus (BP) were successfully incorporated into g-CN photocatalysts (BP/A-CN), resulting in modified materials with improved properties. Structural analysis confirmed the successful integration of aromatic rings and BP into the g-CN framework, indicating the formation of a stable composite. Morphological characterization revealed that the introduction of aromatic rings and BP did not cause any significant changes in the nanosheet-like morphology of the g-CN photocatalysts. To evaluate the photocatalytic hydrogen production activity under visible-light irradiation, various compositions of aromatic benzene rings and BP were investigated. Specifically, the BP/A-CN composite exhibited an enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen production rate (860 μmol g-1 h-1), which was approximately 4.0 times higher than that of g-CN (210 μmol g-1 h-1). The improved hydrogen production rates observed in the modified g-CN photocatalysts can be attributed to several factors. First, the aromatic benzene rings and BP enhanced light absorption, thereby improving the efficient utilization of solar energy. Additionally, the presence of these components in the composite photocatalysts reduced electron-hole recombination, thereby facilitating improved charge transfer and separation efficiencies. Overall, this study demonstrates the potential of incorporating aromatic benzene rings and BP into g-CN photocatalysts for efficient solar energy conversion. These findings contribute to the development of novel photocatalytic materials with enhanced performance and highlight the versatility of g-CN-based composites for various applications in environmental and energy fields.

Implications of the Pore Size of Graphitic Carbon Nitride Monolayers on the Selectivity of Dual-Boron Atom Catalysts for the Reduction of N 2 to Urea and Ammonia: A Computational Investigation. Abstract
The formation of urea by electrocatalytic means remains a great challenge due to the lack of a suitable catalyst that is capable of not only activating inert N2 and CO2 molecules but also circumventing the complexity associated with subsequent reaction steps leading to urea formation. Herein, by means of comprehensive density functional theory simulations, we investigate the catalytic activity of highly stable transition-metal-free dual-boron atom-doped graphitic carbon-nitride monolayers with different pore sizes toward urea production under ambient conditions. As per the results, dual boron atoms impregnated in g-C2N and g-C6N6 monolayers with large pore diameters can successfully activate the N2 molecule and lead to the spontaneous formation of the *NCO*N intermediate, which is the most crucial step for urea formation via direct coupling of N2 and CO2. Interestingly, the B2@g-C2N and B2@g-C6N6 favor urea production with low limiting potentials of -1.11 and -1.18 V compared to very high limiting potentials of -1.71 and -1.88 V, respectively, for ammonia synthesis, leading to an almost 100% Faradaic efficiency for urea formation over ammonia. The dual-boron doping in g-C3N4 with a smaller pore size depicts comparatively weaker N2 adsorption than g-C2N and g-C6N6 counterparts. Further, B2@g-C3N4 prefers ammonia formation at a very low limiting potential of -0.40 V compared to a very high limiting potential of -2.11 V for urea formation. Thus, our findings clearly highlight the critical role played by the pore size of carbon-nitride monolayers in tuning the reactivity and catalytic activity of dual-boron atom catalysts toward urea formation in a selective manner, thereby providing valuable guidance in exploring other highly efficient urea catalysts.

Abstract
Recently, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3 N4 ) has attracted increasing interest due to its visible light absorption, suitable energy band structure, and excellent stability. However, low specific surface area, finite visible light response range (<460 nm), and rapid photogenerated electron-hole (e- -h+ ) pairs recombination of the pristine g-C3 N4 limit its practical applications. The small size of quantum dots (QDs) endows the properties of abundant active sites, wide absorption spectrum, and adjustable bandgap, but inevitable aggregation. Studies have confirmed that the integration of g-C3 N4 and QDs not only overcomes these limitations of individual component, but also successfully inherits each advantage. Encouraged by these advantages, the synthetic strategies and the fundamental of QDs/g-C3 N4 composites are briefly elaborated in this review. Particularly, the synergistic effects of QDs/g-C3 N4 composites are analyzed comprehensively, including the enhancement of the photocatalytic performance and the avoidance of aggregation. Then, the photocatalytic applications of QDs/g-C3 N4 composites in the fields of environment and energy are described and further combined with DFT calculation to further reveal the reaction mechanisms. Moreover, the stability and reusability of QDs/g-C3 N4 composites are analyzed. Finally, the future development of these composites and the solution of existing problems are prospected.

Abstract
Active and stable materials that utilize solar radiation for promoting different reactions are critical for emerging technologies. Two of the most common polymeric carbon nitrides were prepared by the thermal polycondensation of melamine. The scope of this work is to investigate possible structural degradation before and after photoelectrochemical testing. The materials were characterized using synchrotron radiation and lab-based techniques, and subsequently degraded photoelectrochemically, followed by post-mortem analysis. Post-mortem investigations reveal: (1) carbon atoms bonded to three nitrogen atoms change into carbon atoms bonded to two nitrogen atoms and (2) the presence of methylene terminals in post-mortem materials. The study concludes that polymeric carbon nitrides are susceptible to photoelectrochemical degradation via ring opening.

Abstract
Magnetic nanoparticle materials which could be used to remove tetracycline were confined seriously due to their poor stability and unsatisfactory reusability. Here, we facilely prepared novel zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) functionalized magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4@PDA-ZIF-8) adsorbent utilizing polydopamine as a bond to establish a connection between zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 and Fe3O4, which could improve the stability of magnetic nanoparticles and enhance the tetracycline adsorption capacity simultaneously. The prepared nanocomposites were characterized and their TC adsorption abilities under various experiment conditions (contact time, TC initial concentration and pH values) were also investigated. Experimental results proved that the prepared adsorbent showed superior TC adsorption capacities (92.01 mg/g at pH = 7). Further, the adsorption mechanisms were comprehensively studied and the prepared adsorbent showed satisfactory stability and reusability during the cycle experiment. Altogether, our findings provided a feasible way to design and construct functional magnetic MOF materials for enhancing tetracycline adsorption from wastewater.

Abstract
Morphology adjustment is a feasible method to change the physicochemical properties of photocatalysts. The issue that excessively thick tube wall of tubular g-C3N4 is not conducive to the electron migration from inside to the surface thus inhibiting the separation of photogenerated carriers has always been ignored. Potassium ions were used to regulate the structure of the tubular supramolecular precursor by breaking hydrogen bonds, thereby promoting the synthesis of delaminated laminar tubular g-C3N4 (K-CN), which not only shortened the transfer distance of photogenerated electrons but also provided abundant reaction active sites. Experiments and DFT calculations were combined to reveal the details of the physicochemical properties of K-CN. The photocatalytic capacity of K-CN for tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) degradation and H2O2 generation were 83% and 133 μM, respectively. This work not only synthesized a novel delaminated tubular g-C3N4 but also provided a strategy and inspiration for structure and performance optimization for tubular g-C3N4.

Abstract
The technology of photocatalytic hydrogen production that converts abundant yet intermittent solar energy into an environmentally friendly alternative energy source is an attractive strategy to mitigate the energy crisis and environmental pollution. Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4), as a promising photocatalyst, has gradually received focus in the field of artificial photosynthesis due to its appealing optical property, high chemical stability and easy synthesis. However, the limited light absorption and massive recombination of photoinduced carriers have hindered the photocatalytic activity of bare g-C3N4. Therefore, from the perspective of theoretical calculations and experiments, many valid approaches have been applied to rationally design the photocatalyst and ameliorate the hydrogen production performance, such as element doping, defect engineering, morphology tuning, and semiconductor coupling. This review summarized the latest progress of g-C3N4-based photocatalysts from two perspectives, modification of pristine g-C3N4 and interfacial engineering design. It is expected to offer feasible suggestions for the fabrication of low-cost and high-efficiency photocatalysts and the photocatalytic mechanism analyses assisted by calculation in the near future. Finally, the prospects and challenges of this exciting research field are discussed.

Neodymium oxide (Nd 2O 3) coupled tubular g-C 3N 4, an efficient dual-function catalyst for photocatalytic hydrogen production and NO removal. THE SCIENCE OF THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT 2021; 773:145583. Abstract
Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has emerged as a most promising photocatalyst, non-toxicity and low density, but it is plagued by low activity due to the small specific surface area and poor quantum efficiency. Morphological engineering and coupling with other materials to form hybrids have proven to be effective strategies for enabling high photocatalytic performances. Here, neodymium oxide (Nd2O3) coupled tubular g-C3N4 composites had been facilely synthesized by a solvent evaporation and high-temperature calcination method to realize efficient photocatalytic activity of hydrogen production and NO removal. A series of characterizations, such as XRD, ESR, in-situ DRIFTS, etc., were used to analyze the physical and chemical properties of the bifunctional photocatalyst, which demonstrated that the composite material had more active sites and a faster electron transfer rate. The optimal sample (1 wt% Nd2O3/CN-T) had a H2 generation rate of 4355.34 μmol·g-1·h-1, which was 9.46 times than that of original g-C3N4 obtained through heating melamine (CN-M). In addition, the NO removal rate was also 32.32% higher than that of original CN-M. On the basis of the above photocatalytic experimental results and characterizations, a possible mechanism or pathway was proposed and illustrated. This work could provide a feasible strategy to fabricate tubular g-C3N4-based composites with rare earth metal oxides (dual-factor regulation) to simultaneously enhance photocatalytic hydrogen production and NO removal efficiently (double application).

Abstract
Strontium vanadate nanoparticles embedded graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4/Sr2V2O7) was facilely prepared in situ via a hydrothermal method. It was shown that the Sr2V2O7 nanoparticles implanted into g-carbon nitride had a small size and high distribution. Importantly, compared with some other photocatalysts, the as-prepared g-C3N4/Sr2V2O7 nanohybrid showed excellent photocatalytic activity for reduction of Cr(vi), and as high as 99% efficiency for Cr(vi) reduction (100 mg L−1) was reached within 8 min. Moreover, its activity was hardly changed after five cycles, demonstrating that the developed g-C3N4/Sr2V2O7 nanohybrid was highly stable and promising an efficacious disposal of Cr(vi) in water. It was confirmed that the improved charge separation owing to more nitrogen vacancies in the hybrid was the main reason for the improved performance of the g-C3N4-Sr2V2O7 nanohybrid. A well-dispersed strontium vanadate implanted into graphitic carbon nitride showed excellent photocatalytic activity for Cr(vi) reduction. The improved charge separation owing to more nitrogen vacancies was the main reason for its enhanced activity.![]()

Abstract
Metal-based Fenton-like catalysts usually activate H2O2 to produce free radicals (•OH and O2•-) for the degradation of organic pollutants. However, a catalytic reaction dominated by free radicals is easily interfered with by various inorganic anions and water matrices. Herein, g-C3N4-wrapped copper phosphide (CuxP), as a highly efficient Fenton-like catalyst, was successfully synthesized by a simple low-temperature phosphidation method. The CuxP/g-C3N4 catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic ability for the removal of various organic contaminants over a wide pH range of 3-11. In addition, the catalyst exhibited strong anti-interference ability toward various inorganic anions (Cl-, SO42-, NO3-, F-, H2PO4-, HCO3- and CO32-) and water matrices (lake water, river water, tap water and simulated water matrix). The reasons for this performance were analyzed by verifying the mechanism of the catalytic reaction. Compared to the pure CuxP catalyst, the CuxP/g-C3N4 composite possessed good catalytic stability. The enhanced and deactivated mechanisms of the CuxP/g-C3N4 catalyst were systematically analyzed by a series of characterization techniques. A possible reaction mechanism was also proposed based on the experimental results. This work provides new insights into designing highly efficient metal-based Fenton-like catalysts with strong anti-interference ability to practically treat wastewater.

Abstract
In the practical process of photocatalytic H2 evolution, optimizing the ability of light absorption and charge spatial separation is the top priority for improving the photocatalytic performance. In this study, we elaborately engineer neoteric g-C3N4 nanotube@polydopamine(pDA)/NiCo-LDH (LPC) composite photocatalyst by combining hydrothermal and calcination method. In the LPC composite system, the one-dimensional (1D) g-C3N4 nanotubes with larger specific surface area can afford more active sites and conduce to shorten the charge migration distance, as well as the high-speed mass transfer in the nanotube can accelerate the reaction course. The g-C3N4/NiCo-LDH type-II heterojunction can efficaciously stimulate the spatial separation of photo-produced charge. In addition, pDA as heterojunction metal-free interface mediums can provide multiple action (π-π* electron delocalization effect, adhesive action and photosensitization). The optimized LPC nanocomposite displays about 3.3-fold high photoactivity for H2 evolution compared with the g-C3N4 nanotube under solar light irradiation. In addition, the cycle experiment result shows that the LPC composite photocatalyst possesses superior stability and recyclability. The resultant g-C3N4@pDA/NiCo-LDH composite photocatalyst displays the potential practical application in the field of energy conversion.

Abstract
We provide a critical review of the current state of the synthesis and applications of nano- and micro-tubes of layered graphitic carbon nitride. This emerging material has a huge potential for light-harvesting applications, including light sensing, artificial photosynthesis, selective photocatalysis, hydrogen storage, light-induced motion, membrane technologies, and can become a major competitor for such established materials as carbon and titania dioxide nanotubes. Graphitic carbon nitride tubes (GCNTs) combine visible-light sensitivity, high charge carrier mobility, and exceptional chemical/photochemical stability, imparting this material with unrivaled photocatalytic activities in photosynthetic processes, such as water splitting and carbon dioxide reduction. The unique geometric GCNT structure and versatility of possible chemical modifications allow new photocatalytic applications of GCNTs to be envisaged including selective photocatalysts of multi-electron processes as well as light-induced and light-directed motion of GCNT-based microswimmers. Closely-packed arrays of aligned GCNTs show great promise as multifunctional membrane materials for the light energy conversion and storage, light-driven pumping of liquids, selective adsorption, and electrochemical applications. These emerging applications require synthetic routes to GCNTs with highly controlled morphological parameters and composition to be available. We recognize three major strategies for the GCNT synthesis including templating, supramolecular assembling of precursors, and scrolling of nano-/microsheets, and outline promising routes for further progress of these approaches in the light of the most important emerging applications of GCNTs.

Abstract
Self-supported aerogel composed of carbon nitride nanolayers can act as a bifunctional photocatalyst and show enhanced photoreduction and photooxidation performance due to the large surface areas and nitrogen vacancies. The carbon nitride aerogel can catalyze hydrogen evolution at a rate of nearly 4.2 mmol h-1 g-1 and oxidize benzyl alcohols with a high conversion efficiency and selectivity under milder conditions. Note that the activity of carbon nitride aerogel for photochemical alcohol oxidation shows outstanding performance compared with carbon nitride based photocatalysts. Both density functional theory and experimental results demonstrate that the introduction of nitrogen vacancies within the carbon nitride aerogel contributes to the formation of a crooked structure and enhanced adsorption of oxygen compared with a bulk sample.
