Multicolored Photonic Crystal Carbon Fiber Yarns and Fabrics with Mechanical Robustness for Thermal Management

Facile Access to High Solid Content Monodispersed Microspheres via Dual-Component Surfactants Regulation toward High-Performance Colloidal Photonic Crystals

Monodispersed microspheres play a major role in optical science and engineering, providing ideal building blocks for structural color materials. However, the method toward high solid content (HSC) monodispersed microspheres has remained a key hurdle. Herein, a facile access to harvest monodispersed microspheres based on the emulsion polymerization mechanism is demonstrated, where anionic and nonionic surfactants are employed to achieve the electrostatic and steric dual-stabilization balance in a synergistic manner. Monodispersed poly(styrene-butyl acrylate-methacrylic acid) colloidal latex with 55 wt% HSC is achieved, which shows an enhanced self-assembly efficiency of 280% compared with the low solid content (10 wt%) latex. In addition, Ag-coated colloidal photonic crystal (Ag@CPC) coating with near-zero refractive index is achieved, presenting the characteristics of metamaterials. And an 11-fold photoluminescence emission enhancement of CdSe@ZnS quantum dots is realized by the Ag@CPC metamaterial coating. Taking advantage of high assembly efficiency, easily large-scale film-forming of the 55 wt% HSC microspheres latex, robust Ag@CPC metamaterial coatings could be easily produced for passive cooling. The coating demonstrates excellent thermal insulation performance with theoretical cooling power of 30.4 W m-2, providing practical significance for scalable CPC architecture coatings in passive cooling.

Hierarchical porous dual-mode thermal management fabrics achieved by regulating solar and body radiations

Personal thermal management (PTM) of fabrics is vital for human health; the ever-changing location of the human body poses a big challenge for fabrics to maintain a favorable metabolic temperature. Herein, a dual-mode thermal management fabric is designed to achieve both cooling and heating functions by regulating simultaneously solar and body radiations. The cooling or heating mode can be exchanged by flipping the fabric without an external energy supply. The passive cooling side consists of an electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fabric with a hierarchical porous structure, exhibiting high sunlight reflectance (91.42%) and an ∼14 °C temperature decrease under direct sunlight irradiation. The co-existence of nanoscale and microscale pores is proven to be essential for improved cooling performances. The other heating side, coated with an MXene layer, shows high photothermal conversion efficiency (37.5%) and outstanding heating capability outdoors. Furthermore, the contrary mid-infrared emissivity of the two sides (high emissivity of the cooling side while low emissivity of the heating side) leads to the dual-mode passive regulation of body thermal energy. Besides, this fabric demonstrates satisfactory wearability and excellent stability. Our work proposes an energy-saving and cost-effective approach for PTM fabrics potentially suitable for various scenarios (e.g., indoors/outdoors, summer/winter, low/high latitude areas).

Color construction of multi-colored carbon fibers using glucose

Carbon fibers (CFs) have attracted attention in the automotive, aviation, and aerospace industries. However, the coloration of CFs is challenging due to their brittleness, inertness, complexity, and time/energy-intensive processes. Herein, inspired by the naturally grown protrusive nanostructures on the green central surface of peacock back feathers, we report an in-situ self-growing strategy for developing carbon spheres (CSs) on the CFs surface to achieve color tuning. This is achieved via the dynamic growth of CSs using glucose as the feeding material. Combined with the coloration process, the interaction between CSs and CFs promotes stable interfacial forces in integrated molding. This strategy allows the coloring system to continuously vary its color in a designated manner, thereby, endowing it with satisfactory mechanical robustness, acid durability, and light fastness. We anticipate this developed approach can be potentially competitive in the color construction of CFs with multi-colors due to its low-cost manufacturing.

Structurally colored aramid fabric construction and its application as a recyclable photonic catalyst

Structural colors can be used in fabric coloring due to their bright color and non-fading properties. However, it is still a challenge to construct structural color on high crystallinity, smooth surfaced and yellow colored aramid fabrics. Herein, for the first time, photonic crystals (PCs) with structural color were constructed on aramid fabrics by introducing dopamine to modify aramid fabrics and synthesizing monodisperse high refractive index zinc sulfide nanoparticles (ZnS). The influence of the PC coatings on the structural color, mechanical properties, and thermal stability of the structurally colored aramid fabrics or fibers was further investigated. Moreover, due to the excellent catalytic properties of ZnS and the slow photon effects of PCs, the structurally colored fabrics showed good photocatalytic properties, which will be beneficial in reusing the catalysts, which is crucial to their application in the coloring of fabrics but also facilitates the recycling of waste PC coated aramid fabrics.

Structural Colored Fabrics with Brilliant Colors, Low Angle Dependence, and High Color Fastness Based on the Mie Scattering of Cu2O Spheres

Compared with conventional textile coloring with dyes and pigments, structural colored fabrics have attracted broad attention due to the advantages of eco-friendliness, brilliant colors, and anti-fading properties. The most investigated structural color on fabrics is originated from a band gap of multilayered photonic crystals or amorphous photonic structures. However, limited by the nature of the color generation mechanism and a multilayered structure, it is challenging to achieve structural colored fabrics with brilliant noniridescent colors and high fastness. Here, we propose an alternative strategy for coloring a fabric based on the scattering of Cu₂O single-crystal spheres. The disordered Cu₂O thin layers (<0.6 μm) on the surface of fabrics were prepared by a spraying method, which can generate vivid noniridescent structural color due to the strong Mie scattering of Cu₂O single-crystal spheres. Importantly, the great mechanical stability of the structural color was realized by firmly binding Cu₂O spheres to the fabric using a commercial binder. The structural color can be tuned by changing the diameter of Cu₂O spheres. Furthermore, complex patterns can be easily obtained by spray coating Cu₂O spheres with different particle sizes using a mask. According to color fastness test standards, the dry rubbing, wet rubbing, and light fastness of the structural color on fabric can reach level 5, level 4, and level 6, respectively, which is sufficient to resist rubbing, photobleaching, washing, rinsing, kneading, stretching, and other external mechanical forces. This coloring method may carve a practical avenue in textile coloring and has potentials in other practical applications of structural color.

Angiogenic Microspheres for the Treatment of a Thin Endometrium

The poor vascular development of an endometrium is the key cause of a thin endometrium due to the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) decreasing in the glandular epithelium. Hence, inducing angiogenesis is an effective strategy for thin endometrium treatment in clinic. Herein, we developed a novel angiogenic hydrogel microsphere based on methacrylated hyaluronic acid (HAMA) loaded with VEGF for the treatment of a thin endometrium by a microfluidic electrospray technique. The generated HAMA microspheres with uniform size, porous structure, and satisfactory biocompatibility increased the drug-loading ability and controlled the drug-release rate by adjusting the hydrogel concentration. Besides, the HAMA microspheres loaded with VEGF showed satisfactory biocompatibility and promoted blood vessel formation in vitro. More importantly, the combination of HA and VEGF promoted new blood vessels and endometrial regeneration of a thin endometrium in vivo. Therefore, the combination of HA and VEGF would be conducive to the development of a drug-delivery microsphere with excellent biocompatibility and therapeutic effect for thin endometrium treatment and other biomedical applications.

Inorganic Photonic Microspheres with Localized Concentric Ordering for Deep Pattern Encoding and Triple Sensory Microsensor

Photonic microspheres offer building units with unique topological structures and specific optical functions for diverse applications. Here, a new class of inorganic photonic microspheres with superior robustness, optical and electrical properties is reported by introducing a unique localized concentric ordering architecture and chemical interaction, which further serve as building blocks for deep pattern encoding and multiple sensory optoelectronic devices. Benefiting from localized concentric ordering architecture, the resultant photonic microspheres demonstrate orientation- and angle-independent structural colors. Notably, the formation of well-combined lamellae inorganic layers by chemical interaction grants the microspheres superior mechanical robustness, excellent solvent resistance, thermal stability, and multiple optoelectronic properties simultaneously, rarely seen in previous reports. Owing to these merits, such microspheres are used to construct diverse encoded photonic patterns for anti-counterfeiting applications. Interestingly, cross-communication among neighboring microspheres creates complex photonic sub-patterns, which provide "fingerprint information" with deep encryption security. Moreover, a single photonic microsphere-based optoelectronic microsensor is demonstrated for the first time, which achieves appealing application for real-time health monitoring and safety warning toward triple environmental stimuli. This work not only provides a new kind of robust, multifunctional photonic material, but also opens a new avenue for their uses as complexed pattern encoding and multi-parametric sensing platforms.

Thermoconductive, Moisture-Permeable, and Superhydrophobic Nanofibrous Membranes with Interpenetrated Boron Nitride Network for Personal Cooling Fabrics

Space cooling occupies a large portion of total building energy consumption, aggravating the energy crisis and restricting human sustainable development, thus an efficient and energy-saving personal cooling technology is in high demand. Recently, thermally conductive fillers, such as boron nitride (BN), are usually enriched to fibrous materials to construct thermal management textiles. However, these fabrication processes are complex and time-consuming, and the resultant materials fail to transmit moisture and resist liquid water. Herein, we develop a facile and scalable methodology to construct highly thermoconductive breathable superhydrophobic nanofibrous membranes to enhance the thermal management of textiles for personal cooling. The strategy causes boron nitride (BN) to be linked with each other along nanofibers, and thus the membranes contain well interpenetrated BN network and remain porous structure simultaneously, improving their thermal conductivity without sacrificing the moisture permeability. In addition, the membranes possess good resistance to water penetration and intriguing superhydrophobicity due to the synergistic effect of the hydrophobic polymeric matrix and improved roughness. As a consequence, the resultant membranes demonstrate outstanding hybrid active-passive cooling performance with ultrahigh in-plane thermal conductivity of 17.9 W m^-1 K^-1, cross-plane thermal conductivity of 0.29 W m^-1 K^-1, and high water vapor transmission (WVT) rate of 11.6 kg m^-2 day^-1, as well as excellent water repellency with water contact angle of 153° and high hydrostatic pressure of 32 kPa, indicating promising utility for the next generation of cooling fabrics.
