Z-Shaped Fused-Chrysene Electron Acceptors for Organic Photovoltaics

Emerging A-D-A fused-ring photosensitizers for tumor phototheranostics

As we all know, cancer is still a disease that we are struggling against. Although the traditional treatment options are still the mainstream in clinical practice, emerging phototheranostics technologies based on photoacoustic or fluorescence imaging-guided phototherapy also provide a new exploration direction for non-invasive, low-risk and highly efficient cancer treatment. Photosensitizers are the core materials to accomplish this mission. Recently, more attention has been paid to the emerging A-D-A fused-ring photosensitizers. A-D-A fused-ring photosensitizers display strong and wide absorption spectra, high photostability and easy molecular modification. Since this type of photosensitizer was first used for tumor therapy in 2019, its application boundaries are constantly expanding. Therefore, in this feature article, from the perspective of molecular design, we focused on the development of these molecules for application in phototheranostics over the past five years. The effects of tiny structural changes on their photophysical properties are discussed in detail, which provides a way for structural optimization of the subsequent A-D-A photosensitizers.

Exploration of the synergistic effect of chrysene-based core and benzothiophene acceptors on photovoltaic properties of organic solar cells

To improve the efficacy of organic solar cells (OSCs), novel small acceptor molecules (CTD1-CTD7) were designed by modification at the terminal acceptors of reference compound CTR. The optoelectronic properties of the investigated compounds (CTD1-CTD7) were accomplished by employing density functional theory (DFT) in combination with time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). The M06 functional along with a 6-311G(d,p) basis set was utilized for calculating various parameters such as: frontier molecular orbitals (FMO), absorption maxima (λmax), binding energy (Eb), transition density matrix (TDM), density of states (DOS), and open circuit voltage (Voc) of entitled chromophores. A red shift in the absorption spectra of all designed chromophores (CTD1-CTD7) was observed as compared to CTR, accompanied by low excitation energy. Particularly, CTD4 was characterized by the highest λmax value of 685.791 nm and the lowest transition energy value of 1.801 eV which might be ascribed to the robust electron-withdrawing end-capped acceptor group. The observed reduced binding energy (Eb) was linked to an elevated rate of exciton dissociation and substantial charge transfer from central core in HOMO towards terminal acceptors in LUMO. These results were further supported by the outcomes from TDM and DOS analyses. Among all entitled chromophores, CTD4 exhibited bathochromic shift (685.791 nm), minimum HOMO/LUMO band gap of 2.347 eV with greater CT. Thus, it can be concluded that by employing molecular engineering with efficient acceptor moieties, the efficiency of photovoltaic materials could be improved.

Heterocyclic Donor Moiety Effect on Optical Nonlinearity Behavior of Chrysene-Based Chromophores with Push-Pull Configuration via the Quantum Chemical Approach

Organic-based nonlinear optical (NLO) materials may be used in many optical-electronic systems and other next-generation defense technologies. With the importance of NLO materials, a series of push-pull architecture (D-π-A) derivatives (DTMD2-DTMD6) were devised from DTMR1 through structural alteration of different efficient donor heterocyclic groups. Density functional theory-based computations were executed at the MPW1PW91/6-31G(d,p) level to explore the NLO behavior of the derivatives. To investigate the optoelectronic behavior of the said compounds, various analyses like the frontier molecular orbital (FMO), global reactivity parameters, density of state (DOS), absorption spectra (UV-vis), natural bond orbital, and transition density matrix (TDM) were performed. The derivatives have a smaller band gap (2.156-1.492 eV) and a larger bathochromic shift (λmax = 692.838-969.605 nm) as compared to the reference chromophore (ΔE = 2.306 eV and λmax = 677.949 nm). FMO analysis revealed substantial charge conduction out of the donor toward the acceptor via a spacer that was also shown by TDM and DOS analyses. All derivatives showed promising NLO results, with the maximum amplitude of linear polarizability ⟨α⟩ and first (βtotal) and second (γtotal) hyperpolarizabilities over their reference chromophore. DTMD2 contained the highest βtotal (7.220 × 10-27 esu) and γtotal (1.720 × 10-31 esu) values corresponding with the reduced band gap (1.492 eV), representing potential futures for a large NLO amplitude. This structural modification through the use of various donors has played a significant part in achieving promising NLO behavior in the modified compounds.

First theoretical framework of Z-shaped acceptor materials with fused-chrysene core for high performance organic solar cells

Chrysene core containing fused ring acceptor materials have remarkable efficiency for high performance organic solar cells. Therefore, present study has been carried out with the aim to design chrysene based novel Z-shaped electron acceptor molecules (Z1-Z6) from famous Z-shaped photovoltaic material FCIC (R) for organic photovoltaic applications. End-capped engineering at two electron-accepting end groups 1,1-dicyanomethylene-3-indanone of FCIC is made with highly efficient end-capped acceptor moieties and impact of end-capped modifications on structure-property relationship, photovoltaic and electronic properties of newly designed molecules (Z1-Z6) has been studied in detail through DFT and TDDFT calculations. The efficiencies of the designed molecules are evaluated through energy gaps, exciton binding energy along with transition density matrix (TDM) analysis, reorganizational energy of electron and hole, absorption maxima and open circuit voltage of investigated molecules. The designed molecules exhibit red-shift and intense absorption in near-infrared region (683-749 nm) of UV-Vis-NIR absorption spectrum with narrowing of HOMO-LUMO energy gap from 2.31 eV in R to 1.95 in eV in Z5. Moreover, reduction in reorganization energy of electron from 0.0071 (R) to 0.0049 (Z5), and enhancement in open circuit voltage from 1.08 V in R to 1.20 V in Z5 are also observed. Twisted Z-shape of designed molecules prevents self-aggregation that facilitates miscibility of donor and acceptor. Low values of binding energy, excitation energy, and reorganizational energy (electron and hole) suggest that novel designed molecules offer high charge mobilities as compared to FCIC. Our findings indicate that these novel designed molecules can display better photovoltaic parameters and are suitable candidates if used in organic solar cells.

Enhancing Performance of Fused-Ring Electron Acceptor Using Pyrrole Instead of Thiophene

Selecting suitable outermost aromatic rings of the central cores is of particular importance for the design of fused-ring electron acceptors (FREAs) because the direct electronic communication between the outermost aromatic rings and termini exerts a strong impact on the optoelectronic properties of FREAs. In most cases, the outermost rings of the FREA cores are thiophene. This work reported the first example of using pyrrole as the outermost rings of the core. Fused hexacyclic electron acceptor, P6IC, using pyrrole in place of the often-used thiophene as the outermost rings of the central core was synthesized. Compared with its structural analogue F6IC with thiophene as the outermost rings, P6IC exhibits a remarkably upshifted highest occupied molecular orbital energy level (P6IC: -5.43 eV, F6IC: -5.71 eV), a slightly upshifted lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy level (P6IC: -3.94 eV, F6IC: -4.00 eV), 54 nm red-shifted absorption, a narrower band gap (P6IC: 1.30 eV, F6IC: 1.37 eV), and an enhanced mobility (P6IC: 8.8 × 10^-4 cm² V^-1 s^-1, F6IC: 7.4 × 10^-4 cm² V^-1 s^-1). Organic photovoltaic cells using PTB7-Th/P6IC as a photoactive layer exhibit an efficiency of 12.2%, far surpassing that based on PTB7-Th/F6IC active layer (5.57%). The semitransparent devices using PTB7-Th/P6IC as the active layer yield efficiency of 10.2% with an average visible transmittance (AVT) of 17.0%, far surpassing that based on PTB7-Th/F6IC (5.26% with an AVT of 18.4%).
