Unraveling the Mechanism of Water-Mediated Sulfur Tolerance via Operando Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy

A core-molecule-shell Au@PATP@Ag nanorod for nicotine detection based on surface-enhanced Raman scattering technology

Nicotine is an addictive substance often found in tobacco and cigarette smoke and excessive exposure to it can cause various diseases. Herein, core-molecule-shell gold/4-aminothiophenol/silver nanorods (Au@PATP@Ag NRs) were prepared for quantitative detection of nicotine by using surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technology. The obtained Au@PATP@Ag NRs showed an outstanding SERS effect due to the plasticity of their morphology and the bimetallic synergistic effect between the excellent stability of Au and the highly enhanced effect of Ag. The Au@PATP@Ag NRs substrate exhibited an extremely high enhancement factor (EF) of 2.17 × 107. In addition, in-situ synthesized PATP was used as an internal standard to correct signal fluctuation and improve the reliability of quantitative nicotine detection. A wide linear dynamic range from 10-8 to 10-3 M was obtained and an ultra-low limit of detection (LOD) was about 3.12 × 10-9 M, which was superior to most of previously reported methods. This work has also been used for determining nicotine content in cigarettes and simulated environmental tobacco smoke by using a portable device. These results indicated that the developed SERS method had many potential applications in the quantitative determination of nicotine in real tobacco samples.

Application of Advanced Vibrational Spectroscopy in Revealing Critical Chemical Processes and Phenomena of Electrochemical Energy Storage and Conversion

The future of the energy industry and green transportation critically relies on exploration of high-performance, reliable, low-cost, and environmentally friendly energy storage and conversion materials. Understanding the chemical processes and phenomena involved in electrochemical energy storage and conversion is the premise of a revolutionary materials discovery. In this article, we review the recent advancements of application of state-of-the-art vibrational spectroscopic techniques in unraveling the nature of electrochemical energy, including bulk energy storage, dynamics of liquid electrolytes, interfacial processes, etc. Technique-wise, the review covers a wide range of spectroscopic methods, including classic vibrational spectroscopy (direct infrared absorption and Raman scattering), external field enhanced spectroscopy (surface enhanced Raman and IR, tip enhanced Raman, and near-field IR), and two-photon techniques (2D infrared absorption, stimulated Raman, and vibrational sum frequency generation). Finally, we provide perspectives on future directions in refining vibrational spectroscopy to contribute to the research frontier of electrochemical energy storage and conversion.

Redox-Reversible Electrode Material for Direct Hydrocarbon Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) can directly operate on hydrocarbon fuels such as natural gas; however, the widely used nickel-based anodes face grand challenges such as coking, sulfur poisoning, and redox instability. We report a novel double perovskite oxide Sr₂Co_0.4Fe_1.2Mo_0.4O_6-δ (SCFM) that possesses excellent redox reversibility and can be used as both the cathode and the anode. When heat-treated at 900 °C in a reducing environment, double perovskite phase SCFM transforms into a composite of the Ruddlesden-Popper structured oxide Sr₃Co_0.1Fe_1.3Mo_0.6O_7-δ (RP-SCFM) with the Co-Fe alloy nanoparticles homogeneously distributed on the surface of RP-SCFM. At 900 °C in an oxidizing atmosphere, the composite transforms back into the double perovskite phase SCFM. The excellent oxygen reduction reaction catalytic activity and mixed ionic-electronic conductivity make SCFM an excellent cathode material for SOFCs. When SCFM is used as the anode, excellent performance and stability are achieved upon either direct oxidation of methane as a fuel or operation with sulfur-containing fuels. The excellent redox reversibility coupled with outstanding electrical and catalytic properties manifested by SCFM will enable a broad application in energy conversion applications.
