Exploiting Giant-Pore Systems of Nanosized MIL-101 in PDMS Matrix for Facilitated Reverse-Selective Hydrocarbon Transport

Solvent Vapor/Gas-Induced Guest Transport and Exchange of a Nonporous Organic Crystal to Construct Smart Host-Guest Energetic Materials

Supramolecular materials with advanced properties constructed by intermolecular interactions have attracted extensive attention in many fields, such as sensing, catalysis, and biomedicine. However, in the field of energetic materials, limited by the tight-packed crystal structure of explosives and the strong intermolecular interaction forces, most supramolecular explosives can only be obtained in organic solution or under extreme external loading (high temperature/high pressure). Given the practical issues such as safety risks, operational difficulties, serious environmental pollution, and large-scale production of the existing technology, a new method of constructing host-guest explosives by solvent vapor/gas induction is proposed. This gas-solid reaction method takes advantage of the metastable properties from the explosives solvate (HNIW/ACN), and cleverly opens a fast channel for gas molecules to enter the explosives cell cavities, which results in the highly efficient preparation of the host-guest explosives (HNIW/CO2 and HNIW/N2O). The embedding of functional gas molecules greatly improves the structural stability and comprehensive performance of the explosive skeleton, and the detonation velocity of HNIW/N2O even reaches 9802 m·s-1, which is higher than that of ε-HNIW (9455 m·s-1). In addition, compared with ε-HNIW, HNIW/CO2 and HNIW/N2O exhibit high energy but low sensitivity, enhanced thermal stability, and combustion properties, which present a potential prospect in the field of energetic materials. The new method effectively overcomes the high-energy barrier of nonporous organic explosives, offering the advantages of simplicity, safety, efficiency, and environmental friendliness. This study provides a valuable pathway for constructing advanced supramolecular energetic materials, which contributes to the enrichment of supramolecular engineering systems.

Efficient Propylene/Ethylene Separation in Highly Porous Metal-Organic Frameworks

Light olefins are important raw materials in the petrochemical industry for the production of many chemical products. In the past few years, remarkable progress has been made in the synthesis of light olefins (C2-C4) from methanol or syngas. The separation of light olefins by porous materials is, therefore, an intriguing research topic. In this work, single-component ethylene (C₂H₄) and propylene (C₃H₆) gas adsorption and binary C₃H₆/C₂H₄ (1:9) gas breakthrough experiments have been performed for three highly porous isostructural metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) denoted as Fe₂M-L (M = Mn²⁺, Co²⁺, or Ni²⁺), three representative MOFs, namely ZIF-8 (also known as MAF-4), MIL-101(Cr), and HKUST-1, as well as an activated carbon (activated coconut charcoal, SUPELCO^©). Single-component gas adsorption studies reveal that Fe₂M-L, HKUST-1, and activated carbon show much higher C₃H₆ adsorption capacities than MIL-101(Cr) and ZIF-8, HKUST-1 and activated carbon have relatively high C₃H₆/C₂H₄ adsorption selectivity, and the C₂H₄ and C₃H₆ adsorption heats of Fe₂Mn-L, MIL-101(Cr), and ZIF-8 are relatively low. Binary gas breakthrough experiments indicate all the adsorbents selectively adsorb C₃H₆ from C₃H₆/C₂H₄ mixture to produce purified C₂H₄, and 842, 515, 504, 271, and 181 cm³ g^-1 C₂H₄ could be obtained for each breakthrough tests for HKUST-1, activated carbon, Fe₂Mn-L, MIL-101(Cr), and ZIF-8, respectively. It is worth noting that C₃H₆ and C₂H₄ desorption dynamics of Fe₂Mn-L are clearly faster than that of HKUST-1 or activated carbon, suggesting that Fe₂M-L are promising adsorbents for C₃H₆/C₂H₄ separation with low energy penalty in regeneration.

n-Octyltrichlorosilane Modified SAPO-34/PDMS Mixed Matrix Membranes for Propane/Nitrogen Mixture Separation

In this study, zeolite molecular sieve SAPO-34/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) were prepared to recover propane. n-Octyltrichlorosilane (OTCS) was introduced to improve compatibility between SAPO-34 and PDMS, and enhance the separation performance of the MMMs. Physicochemical properties of the MMMs were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and water contact angle (WCA). Results showed that, after modification, alkyl chains were successfully grafted onto SAPO-34 without changing its crystal structure, particles in the MMMs were evenly distributed in the base film, and the hydrophobicity of the MMMs was enhanced. Moreover, the effects of SAPO-34 filling content, operating pressure, and feed gas concentration on the separation performance was explored. This indicated that the modification with OTCS effectively enhanced the separation performance of SAPO-34/PDMS MMMs. When the filling content of modified SAPO-34 was 15%, the maximal separation factor of 22.1 was achieved, and the corresponding propane permeation rate was 101 GPU.
