Elucidating J-Aggregation Effect in Boosting Singlet-Oxygen Evolution Using Zirconium-Porphyrin Frameworks: A Comprehensive Structural, Catalytic, and Spectroscopic Study

Singlet Oxygen Photophysics: From Liquid Solvents to Mammalian Cells

Molecular oxygen, O2, has long provided a cornerstone for studies in chemistry, physics, and biology. Although the triplet ground state, O2(X3Σg-), has garnered much attention, the lowest excited electronic state, O2(a1Δg), commonly called singlet oxygen, has attracted appreciable interest, principally because of its unique chemical reactivity in systems ranging from the Earth's atmosphere to biological cells. Because O2(a1Δg) can be produced and deactivated in processes that involve light, the photophysics of O2(a1Δg) are equally important. Moreover, pathways for O2(a1Δg) deactivation that regenerate O2(X3Σg-), which address fundamental principles unto themselves, kinetically compete with the chemical reactions of O2(a1Δg) and, thus, have practical significance. Due to technological advances (e.g., lasers, optical detectors, microscopes), data acquired in the past ∼20 years have increased our understanding of O2(a1Δg) photophysics appreciably and facilitated both spatial and temporal control over the behavior of O2(a1Δg). One goal of this Review is to summarize recent developments that have broad ramifications, focusing on systems in which oxygen forms a contact complex with an organic molecule M (e.g., a liquid solvent). An important concept is the role played by the M+•O2-• charge-transfer state in both the formation and deactivation of O2(a1Δg).

Mild selective photochemical oxidation of an organic sulfide using OxP-polyimide porous polymers as singlet oxygen generators

A series of porous organic polymers based on a singlet oxygen generating oxoporphyinogen ('OxP') has been successfully prepared from a pseudotetrahedral OxP-tetraamine precursor (OxP(4-NH2Bn)4) by its reaction with tetracarboxylic acid dianhydrides under suitable conditions. Of the compounds studied, those containing naphthalene (OxP-N) and perylene (OxP-P) spacers, respectively, have large surface areas (~530 m2 g-1). On the other hand, the derivative with a simple benzene spacer (OxP-B) exhibits the best 1O2 generating capability. Although the starting OxP-tetraamine precursor is a poor 1O2 generator, its incorporation into OxP POPs leads to a significant enhancement of 1O2 productivity, which is largely due to the transformation of NH2 groups to electron-withdrawing diimides. Overall 1O2 production efficacy of OxP-POPs under irradiation by visible light is significantly improved over the common reference material PCN-222. All the materials OxP-B, OxP-N and OxP-P promote oxidation of thioanisole involving conversion of ambient triplet state oxygen to singlet oxygen under visible light irradiation and its reaction with the sulfide. Although the reaction rate of the oxidation promoted by OxP POPs is generally lower than for conventional materials (such as PCN-222) or previously studied OxP derivatives, undesired overoxidation of the substrate to methyl phenyl sulfone is suppressed. For organic sulfides, selectivity of oxidation is especially important for detoxification of mustard gas (bis(2-chloroethyl)sulfide) or similarly toxic compounds since controlled oxidation leads to the low toxicity bis(2-chloroethyl)sulfoxide while overoxidation leads to intoxification (since bis(2-chloroethyl)sulfone presents greater toxicity to humans than the sulfide substrate). Therefore, OxP POPs capable of promoting selective oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides have excellent potential to be used as mild and selective detoxification agents.

Porphyrin-Polyoxotungstate Molecular Hybrid as a Highly Efficient, Durable, Visible-Light-Responsive Photocatalyst for Aerobic Oxidation Reactions

Organic-polyoxometalate (POM) hybrids have recently attracted considerable interest because of their distinctive properties and wide-ranging applications. For the construction of organic-POM hybrids, porphyrins are promising building units owing to their optical properties and reactivity, including strong visible-light absorption and subsequent singlet-oxygen (1O2*) generation. However, the practical utilization of porphyrins as photocatalysts and photosensitizers is often hindered by their own degradation by 1O2*. Therefore, there is a substantial demand for the development of porphyrin-derived photocatalysts with both high efficiency and durability. Herein, we present a porphyrin-polyoxotungstate molecular hybrid featuring a face-to-face stacked porphyrin dimer (I) fastened by four lacunary polyoxotungstates. Hybrid I exhibited remarkable efficiency and durability in photocatalytic aerobic oxidation reactions, and the selective oxidation of various dienes, alkenes, sulfides, and amines proceeded using just 0.003 mol % of the catalyst. Mechanistic investigations suggested that the high activity of I stems from the efficient generation of 1O2*, resulting from the heavy-atom effect of POMs. Furthermore, despite its high efficiency in 1O2* generation compared to free porphyrins, I exhibited superior durability against 1O2*-induced degradation under photoirradiation.

De Novo Synthesis of Acridone-Based Zn-Metal-Organic Framework (Zn-MOF) as a Photocatalyst: Application for Visible Light-Mediated Oxidation of Sulfides and Enaminones

Acridone, a cyclic analogue of benzophenone that undergoes efficient intersystem crossing (ISC) to the triplet-excited state with near-unity quantum yield, was elaborated as a 3-connecting triacid linker, i.e., H3AcTA, to develop a photocatalytic metal-organic framework (MOF) for energy transfer applications; the triacid linker inherently features concave shapes, an attribute that is important for the construction of MOFs with significant porosity. Metal ion (Zn2+)-assisted self-assembly of the triacid yielded a Zn-MOF, i.e., Zn-AcTA, with a solvent-accessible volume of ca. 31%. The protection of the acridone chromophore in the MOF in conjunction with a wider cross-section of its absorption in the visible region renders the MOF an excellent heterogeneous photosensitizer for singlet oxygen (1O2) generation by energy transfer to the ground-state triplet oxygen (3O2). It is shown that the Zn-MOF can be applied as a photosensitizing catalyst for visible light-mediated oxidation of various sulfides to sulfoxides and enaminones to amino-esters via 1,2-acyl migration. It is further demonstrated that the photocatalyst can be easily recycled without any loss of catalytic activity and structural integrity. Based on mechanistic investigations, 1O2 is established as the reactive oxygen species in photocatalytic oxidation reactions. The results constitute the first demonstration of rational development of a photocatalytic MOF based on acridone for heterogeneous oxidations mediated by 1O2.

Expanding the horizons of porphyrin metal-organic frameworks via catecholate coordination: exploring structural diversity, material stability and redox properties

Porphyrin based Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) have generated high interest because of their unique combination of light absorption, electron transfer and guest adsorption/desorption properties. In this study, we expand the range of available MOF materials by focusing on the seldom studied porphyrin ligand H10TcatPP, functionalized with tetracatecholate coordinating groups. A systematic evaluation of its reactivity with M(iii) cations (Al, Fe, and In) led to the synthesis and isolation of three novel MOF phases. Through a comprehensive characterization approach involving single crystal and powder synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) in combination with the local information gained from spectroscopic techniques, we elucidated the structural features of the solids, which are all based on different inorganic secondary building units (SBUs). All the synthesized MOFs demonstrate an accessible porosity, with one of them presenting mesopores and the highest reported surface area to date for a porphyrin catecholate MOF (>2000 m2 g-1). Eventually, the redox activity of these solids was investigated in a half-cell vs. Li with the aim of evaluating their potential as electrode positive materials for electrochemical energy storage. One of the solids displayed reversibility during cycling at a rather high potential (∼3.4 V vs. Li+/Li), confirming the interest of redox active phenolate ligands for applications involving electron transfer. Our findings expand the library of porphyrin-based MOFs and highlight the potential of phenolate ligands for advancing the field of MOFs for energy storage materials.

A Perylenediimide-Based Zinc-Coordination Polymer for Photosensitized Singlet-Oxygen Generation

In the face of anthropogenic global warming the design and synthesis of materials, which enable energy transfer processes using sunlight as an energy source, are of high interest. Perylenediimides are a highly absorbing class of chromophores suitable for sunlight absorption and conversion. Therefore, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and coordination polymers (CPs) with incorporated organic perylene chromophores are highly interesting materials both for applied, but also fundamental, photophysical research. MOFs/CPs have the advantage of a modular adjustability of interchromophoric distances and angles, and the choice of metal nodes can be used to further tune the material towards the desired photophysical properties. In the present paper, we present a study using a reported organic perylenediimide (PDI) chromophore (H2tpdb) as a linker to be incorporated into coordination polymer and test towards applicability within the photochemical 1O2 generation. In detail, a novel zinc 2D -coordination polymer Zn(tpdb)(DMF)3 is reported, which is synthesized using a solvothermal synthesis with Zn(NO3)2 and a ditopic organic perylene linker. Both the linker and Zn-CP are fully characterized, including SC-XRD, showing a strong aggregation of tightly packed chromophores in the solid state. The photophysical properties are examined and discussed, including the observed shifts within the absorption spectra of the CP are compared to the linker in solution. These shifts are mainly attributed to the for PDIs known H-type aggregation and an additional charge transfer in the framework structure, causing a limited quantum yield of the emission. Finally, the photosensitization of triplet oxygen to singlet oxygen using 1,3-diphenylisobenzofurane (DBPF) as a trapping agent is investigated both for the free linker and the Zn-CP, showing that the perylene chromophore is an efficient photosensitizer and its activity can, in principle, be retained after its incorporation in the coordination polymer.

Engineering of Single Atomic Cu-N3 Active Sites for Efficient Singlet Oxygen Production in Photocatalysis

Photocatalytic generation of singlet oxygen (¹O₂) is an attractive strategy to convert organic chemicals to high value-added products. However, the scarcity of suitable active sites in photocatalysts commonly leads to the poor adsorption and activation of oxygen molecules from a triplet state to a singlet state. Here, we report single atomic Cu-N₃ sites on tubular g-C₃N₄ for the production of singlet oxygen. X-ray absorption fine spectroscopy, in combination with high-resolution electron microscopy techniques, determines the existence of atomically dispersed Cu sites with Cu-N₃ coordination mode. The combined analysis of electron spin resonance and time-resolved optical spectra confirmed that a single atomic Cu-N₃ structure facilitates a high concentration of ¹O₂ generation due to charge transport, electron-hole interaction, and exciton effect. Benefiting from the merits, a single atomic photocatalyst yields nearly 100% conversion and selectivity from thioanisole to sulfoxide within 2.5 h under visible light irradiation. This work deeply reveals the design and construction of catalysts with specific active sites, which are helpful to improve the activation efficiency of oxygen.

Porphyrin-Containing MOFs and COFs as Heterogeneous Photosensitizers for Singlet Oxygen-Based Antimicrobial Nanodevices

Visible-light irradiation of porphyrin and metalloporphyrin dyes in the presence of molecular oxygen can result in the photocatalytic generation of singlet oxygen (¹O₂). This type II reactive oxygen species (ROS) finds many applications where the dye, also called the photosensitizer, is dissolved (i.e., homogeneous phase) along with the substrate to be oxidized. In contrast, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are insoluble (or will disassemble) when placed in a solvent. When stable as a suspension, MOFs adsorb a large amount of O₂ and photocatalytically generate ¹O₂ in a heterogeneous process efficiently. Considering the immense surface area and great capacity for gas adsorption of MOFs, they seem ideal candidates for this application. Very recently, covalent-organic frameworks (COFs), variants where reticulation relies on covalent rather than coordination bonds, have emerged as efficient photosensitizers. This comprehensive mini review describes recent developments in the use of porphyrin-based or porphyrin-containing MOFs and COFs, including nanosized versions, as heterogeneous photosensitizers of singlet oxygen toward antimicrobial applications.

Porphyrin and phthalocyanine-based metal organic frameworks beyond metal-carboxylates

Given the ubiquitous role of porphyrins in natural systems, these molecules and related derivatives such as phthalocyanines are fascinating building units to achieve functional porous materials. Porphyrin-based MOFs have been developed over the past three decades, yet chemically robust frameworks, necessary for applications, have been achieved much more recently and this field is expanding. This progress is partially driven by the development of porphyrins and phthalocyanines bearing alternative coordinating groups (phosphonate, azolates, phenolates…) that allowed moving the related MOFs beyond metal-carboxylates and achieving new topologies and properties. In this perspective article we first give a brief outline of the synthetic pathways towards simple porphyrins and phthalocyanines bearing these complexing groups. The related MOF compounds are then described; their structural and textural properties are discussed, as well as their stability and physical properties. An overview of the resulting nets and topologies is proposed, showing both the similarities with metal-carboxylate phases and the peculiarities related to the alternative coordinating groups. Eventually, the opportunities offered by this recent research topic, in terms of both synthesis pathways and modulation of pore size and shape, stability and physical properties, are discussed.

Photonic Switching Porous Organic Polymers toward Reversible Control of Heterogeneous Photocatalysis

Sonogashira-Hagihara coupling reaction of photoswitchable dithienylethene (AEDTE) with metal-free 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-iodophenyl)porphyrin and its metal derivatives (MTIPP, M = H₂, Zn(II), Fe(II)) results in three porous organic polymers (POPs) including AEDTE-H₂TIPP-POP, AEDTE-ZnTIPP-POP, and AEDTE-FeTIPP-POP. The morphology, components, and structures of newly obtained POPs have been examined by a range of spectroscopic and microscopic techniques including infrared spectroscopy (IR), solid-state UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The porous structures have been estimated by nitrogen and carbon dioxide sorption isotherms at 77 and 196 K, respectively. The open-AEDTE-H₂TIPP-POP with AEDTE in an open form was revealed to be an effective and stable heterogeneous photocatalyst for visible light-driven oxidation of N-methylpyridinium salts possibly because of its relatively large specific surface area. In particular, a proof-of-concept of photoswitchable POP photocatalysts has been established using different light irradiation upon open-AEDTE-H₂TIPP-POP to control its heterogeneous photocatalytic behaviors because of the adjustment over the electron transfer process and porous structures through photoisomerization of AEDTE. The present result highlights the bright perspective of photoswitching POPs in the field of materials chemistry and catalysis community.

Metal-Organic Frameworks Based on Group 3 and 4 Metals

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based on group 3 and 4 metals are considered as the most promising MOFs for varying practical applications including water adsorption, carbon conversion, and biomedical applications. The relatively strong coordination bonds and versatile coordination modes within these MOFs endow the framework with high chemical stability, diverse structures and topologies, and interesting properties and functions. Herein, the significant progress made on this series of MOFs since 2018 is summarized and an update on the current status and future trends on the structural design of robust MOFs with high connectivity is provided. Cluster chemistry involving Y, lanthanides (Ln, from La to Lu), actinides (An, from Ac to Lr), Ti, and Zr is initially introduced. This is followed by a review of recently developed MOFs based on group 3 and 4 metals with their structures discussed based on the types of inorganic or organic building blocks. The novel properties and arising applications of these MOFs in catalysis, adsorption and separation, delivery, and sensing are highlighted. Overall, this review is expected to provide a timely summary on MOFs based on group 3 and 4 metals, which shall guide the future discovery and development of stable and functional MOFs for practical applications.

Recent Advances in Heterogeneous Photo-Driven Oxidation of Organic Molecules by Reactive Oxygen Species

The photo-driven oxidation of organic molecules into corresponding high-value-added products has become a promising method in chemical synthesis. This strategy can drive thermodynamically non-spontaneous reactions and achieve challenging thermocatalytic processes under ambient conditions. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are not only significant intermediates for producing target products via photoinduced oxidation reactions but also contribute to the creation of sustainable chemical processes. Here, the latest advances in heterogeneous photo-driven oxidation reactions involving ROS are summarized. The major types of ROS and their generation are introduced, and the behaviors of various ROS involved in photo-driven processes are reviewed in terms of the formation of different bonds. Emphasis is placed on unraveling the reaction mechanisms of ROS and establishing strategies for their regulation, and the remaining challenges and perspectives are summarized and analyzed. This Review is expected to provide an in-depth understanding of the mechanisms of ROS involved in photo-driven oxidation processes as an important foundation for the design of efficient catalysts. Clarifying the role of ROS in oxidation reactions has important scientific significance for improving the atomic and energy efficiency of reactions in practical applications.
