Adsorptive Separation of Geometric Isomers of 2-Butene on Gallate-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks

One-Step Butadiene Purification in a Sulfonate-Functionalized Metal-Organic Framework through Synergistic Separation Mechanism

Porous materials that could recognize specific molecules from complex mixtures are of great potential in improving the current energy-intensive multistep separation processes. However, due to the highly similar structures and properties of the mixtures, the design of desired porous materials remains challenging. Herein, a sulfonate-functionalized metal-organic framework ZU-609 with suitable pore size and pore chemistry is designed for 1,3-butadiene (C4H6) purification from complex C4 mixtures. The sulfonate anions decorated in the channel achieve selective recognition of C4H6 from other C4 olefins with subtle polarity differences through C-H⋅⋅⋅O-S interactions, affording recorded C4H6/trans-2-C4H8 selectivity (4.4). Meanwhile, the shrunken mouth of the channel with a suitable pore size (4.6 Å) exhibits exclusion effect to the larger molecules cis-2-C4H8, iso-C4H8, n-C4H10 and iso-C4H10. Benefiting from the moderate C4 olefins binding affinity exhibited by sulfonate anions, the adsorbed C4H6 could be easily regenerated near ambient conditions. Polymer-grade 1,3-butadiene (99.5 %) is firstly obtained from 7-component C4 mixtures via one adsorption-desorption cycle. The work demonstrates the great potential of synergistic recognition of size-sieving and thermodynamically equilibrium in dealing with complex mixtures.

Sulfonate Functional Ultramicroporous Materials with Suitable Pore Size and Layer-Stacked Structure for C4 Olefins Purification

Selective recognition of 1,3-butadiene from complex olefin isomers is vital for 1,3-butadiene purification, but the lack of porous materials with suitable pore structures results in poor selectivity and low capacity in C4 olefin separation. Herein, two sulfonate-functionalized organic frameworks, ZU-601 and ZU-602, are designed and show impressive separation performance toward C4 olefins. Benefiting from the suitable aperture size caused by the flexibility of coordinated organic ligand, ZU-601, ZU-602 that are pillared with different sulfonate anions could discriminate C4 olefin isomers with high uptake ratio: 1,3-butadiene/1-butene (207), 1,3-butadiene/trans-2-butene (10.1). Meanwhile, their layer-stacked structure enables the utilization of both intra- and interlayer space, enhancing the accommodation of guest molecules. ZU-601 exhibits record high 1,3-butadiene adsorption capacity of 2.90 mmol g-1 (0.5 bar, 298 K) among the reported flexible porous materials with high 1,3-butadiene/1-butene selectivity. The breakthrough experiments confirm their superior separation ability even for all five C4 olefin isomers, and the molecular-level structural change is well elucidated via powder, crystal analysis, and simulation studies. The work provides ideas toward advanced materials design with simultaneous high separation capacity and high separation selectivity for challenging separations.

Recognition of C4 Olefins by an Ultramicroporous ftw-Type Yttrium-Based Metal-Organic Framework with Distorted Cages

Developing porous adsorbents for efficient separation of C4 olefins is significant but challenging in the petrochemical industry due to their similar molecular sizes and physical properties. The separation efficiency is often limited when separating C4 olefins by a single separation mechanism. Herein, an ultramicroporous yttrium-based MOF, Y-dbai, is reported featuring cage-like pores connected by small windows, for recognition and efficient separation of C4 olefins through a synergistic effect of thermodynamic and kinetic mechanisms. At 298 K and 1 bar, the adsorption capacities of Y-dbai for C4H6, 1-C4H8, and i-C4H8 are 2.88, 1.07, and 0.14 mmol g-1, respectively, indicating a molecular sieving effect toward i-C4H8. The C4H6/i-C4H8 and 1-C4H8/i-C4H8 uptake selectivities of Y-dbai are 20.6 and 7.6, respectively, outperforming most of the reported adsorbents. The static and kinetic adsorption experiments coupled with DFT calculations indicate the separation should be attributed to a combined effect of thermodynamically and kinetically controlled mechanism. Breakthrough experiments have confirmed the excellent separation capability of Y-dbai toward C4H6/1-C4H8, C4H6/i-C4H8, and C4H6/1-C4H8/i-C4H8 mixtures.

Molecular sieving of iso-butene from C4 olefins with simultaneous high 1,3-butadiene and n-butene uptakes

Iso-butene (iso-C4H8) is an important raw material in chemical industry, whereas its efficient separation remains challenging due to similar molecular properties of C4 olefins. The ideal adsorbent should possess simultaneous high uptakes for 1,3-butadiene (C4H6) and n-butene (n-C4H8) counterparts, endowing high efficiency for iso-C4H8 separation in adsorption columns. Herein, a sulfate-pillared adsorbent, SOFOUR-DPDS-Ni (DPDS = 4,4'-dipyridyldisulfide), is reported for the efficient iso-C4H8 separation from binary and ternary C4 olefin mixtures. The rigidity in pore sizes and shapes of SOFOUR-DPDS-Ni exerts the molecular sieving of iso-C4H8, while exhibiting high C4H6 and n-C4H8 uptakes. The benchmark Henry's selectivity for C4H6/iso-C4H8 (2321.8) and n-C4H8/iso-C4H8 (233.5) outperforms most reported adsorbents. Computational simulations reveal the strong interactions for C4H6 and n-C4H8. Furthermore, dynamic breakthrough experiments demonstrate the direct production of high-purity iso-C4H8 (>99.9%) from C4H6/iso-C4H8 (50/50, v/v), n-C4H8/iso-C4H8 (50/50, v/v), and C4H6/n-C4H8/iso-C4H8 (50/15/35, v/v/v) gas-mixtures.

Trajectory in biological metal-organic frameworks: Biosensing and sustainable strategies-perspectives and challenges

The ligand attribute of biomolecules to form coordination bonds with metal ions led to the discovery of a novel class of materials called biomolecule-associated metal-organic frameworks (Bio-MOFs). These biomolecules coordinate in multiple ways and provide versatile applications. Far-spread bio-ligands include nucleobases, amino acids, peptides, cyclodextrins, saccharides, porphyrins/metalloporphyrin, proteins, etc. Low-toxicity, self-assembly, stability, designable and selectable porous size, the existence of rigid and flexible forms, bio-compatibility, and synergistic interactions between metal ions have led Bio-MOFs to be commercialized in industries such as sensors, food, pharma, and eco-sensing. The rapid growth and commercialization are stunted by absolute bio-compatibility issues, bulk morphology that makes it rigid to alter shape/porosity, longer reaction times, and inadequate research. This review elucidates the structural vitality, biocompatibility issues, and vital sensing applications, including challenges for incorporating bio-ligands into MOF. Critical innovations in Bio-MOFs' applicative spectrum, including sustainable food packaging, biosensing, insulin and phosphoprotein detection, gas sensing, CO2 capture, pesticide carriers, toxicant adsorptions, etc., have been elucidated. Emphasis is placed on biosensing and biomedical applications with biomimetic catalysis and sensitive sensor designing.

Porous Metal-Organic Frameworks for Light Hydrocarbon Separation

The separation of light hydrocarbon compounds is an important process in the chemical industry. Currently, its separation methods mainly include distillation, membrane separation, and physical adsorption. However, these traditional methods or materials have some drawbacks and disadvantages, such as expensive equipment costs and high energy consumption, poor selectivity, low separation ratios, and separation efficiencies. Therefore, it is important to develop novel separation materials for light hydrocarbon separation. As a new type of organic-inorganic hybrid crystalline material, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising materials for light hydrocarbon separation due to their designability of structure and easy modulation of function. This review provides an overview of recent advances in the design, synthesis, and application of MOFs for light hydrocarbon separation in recent years, with a focus on the separation of alkane, alkene, and alkyne. We discuss strategies for improving the adsorption selectivity and capacity of MOFs, including pore size limitation, physical adsorption, and chemisorption. In addition, we discuss the advantages/disadvantages, challenges, and prospects of MOFs in the separation of light hydrocarbon.

Theoretical investigation of C1-C4 hydrocarbons adsorption and separation in a porous metallocavitand

The purification of light hydrocarbons is one of the most important chemical processes globally which consumes substantial energy. Porous materials are likely to improve the efficiency of the separation process by acting as regenerable solid adsorbents. To investigate such translational systems, the underlying mechanism of adsorption in the porous materials must be taken into account. Herein we report the adsorption and selective separation of C1-C4 hydrocarbons in the coinage metal-based macrocyclic metallocavitand Pillarplex, which exhibits excellent performance in the adsorption of CH4 at the ambient conditions with a binding energy of -17.9 kcal mol-1. In addition, the endohedral adsorption of C2-C4 hydrocarbon is impressive. The CH4, C2H4, C3H4, and 1,3-butadiene have potential uptake of 2.57, 4.26, 3.60, and 2.95 mmol g-1, respectively at ambient conditions are highest from their respective isomers. Selective separation of C1-C4 hydrocarbons is studied using ideal adsorption solution theory demonstrating its potential for one-step purification of C1-C3 hydrocarbons.

Pillar[3]trianglamines: deeper cavity triangular macrocycles for selective hexene isomer separation

The separation of α-olefins and their corresponding isomers continues to be a big challenge for the chemical industry due to their overlapping physical properties and low relative volatility. Herein, pillar[3]trianglamine (P-TA) macrocycles were synthesized for the molecular-sieving-like separation of 1-hexene (1-He) selectively over its positional isomer trans-3-hexene (trans-3-He) in the vapor and liquid state. This allyl-functionalized macrocycle features a deeper cavity compared to the previously reported trianglamine host molecules. Solid-vapor sorption experiments verified the successful separation of 1-He from an equimolar mixture of 1-He and trans-3-He. Single-crystal structures and powder X-ray diffraction patterns suggest that this selective adsorption arises from the formation of a thermodynamically stable host-guest complex between 1-He and P-TA. A reversible transformation between the nonporous guest-free structure and the guest-containing structure shows that 1-He separation can be carried out over multiple cycles without any loss of performance. Significantly, P-TA can separate 1-He directly from a liquid isomeric mixture and thus P-TA modified silica sieves (SBA-15) showed the ability to selectively separate 1-He when utilized as a stationary phase in column chromatography. This capitalizes on the prospects of employing macrocyclic hosts as molecular recognition units in real-life separations for sustainable and energy-efficient industrial practices.

Recent progress on porous MOFs for process-efficient hydrocarbon separation, luminescent sensing, and information encryption

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), as an emerging class of porous materials, excel in designability, regulatability, and modifiability in terms of their composition, topology, pore size, and surface chemistry, thus affording a huge potential for addressing environment and energy-related challenges. In particular, MOFs can be applied as porous adsorbents for the purification of industrially important hydrocarbons through certain process-efficient separation schemes based on selectivity-reversed adsorption and multicomponent separation. Moreover, the vast combination possibilities and controllable and engineerable luminescent units of MOFs make them a versatile platform to develop functionally tailored materials for luminescent sensing and optical data encryption. In this feature article, we summarize the recent progress in the use of porous MOFs for the separation and purification of acetylene (C₂H₂) and ethylene (C₂H₄) based on selectivity-reversed adsorption and multicomponent separation strategies. Moreover, we highlight the advances over the past three years in the field of MOF-based luminescent materials for thermometry, turn-on sensing, and information encryption.

A cannabidiol-loaded Mg-gallate metal-organic framework-based potential therapeutic for glioblastomas

Cannabidiol (CBD) has been shown to slow cancer cell growth and is toxic to human glioblastoma cell lines. Thus, CBD could be an effective therapeutic for glioblastoma. In the present study, we explored the anticancer effect of cannabidiol loaded magnesium-gallate (CBD/Mg-GA) metal-organic framework (MOF) using the rat glioma brain cancer (C6) cell line. Bioactive and microporous magnesium gallate MOF was employed for simultaneous delivery of two potential anticancer agents (gallic acid and CBD) to the cancer cells. Gallic acid (GA), a polyphenolic compound, is part of the MOF framework, while CBD is loaded within the framework. Slow degradation of CBD/Mg-GA MOF in physiological fluids leads to sustained release of GA and CBD. CBD's anti-cancer actions target mitochondria, inducing their dysfunction and generation of harmful reactive oxygen species (ROS). Anticancer effects of CBD/Mg-GA include a significant increase in ROS production and a reduction in anti-inflammatory responses as reflected by a significant decrease in TNF-α expression levels. Molecular mechanisms that underlie these effects include the modulation of NF-κB expression, triggering the apoptotic cascades of glioma cells. CBD/Mg-GA MOF has potential anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. Thus, the present study demonstrates that CBD/Mg-GA MOF may be a promising therapeutic for glioblastoma.

Fine-regulating ultramicropores in porous carbon via a self-sacrificial template route for high-performance supercapacitors

Ultramicropores (size < 0.7 nm) are critically demanded to provide an efficient path for the penetration and transportation of electrolytes to achieve high-performance supercapacitors. Here, a self-sacrificial template approach is adopted, which introduces C8 alkyl chains with a kinetic diameter of 0.8-1 nm to occupy the cavity of a porous aromatic framework (PAF). During the heating process, the alkyl chains decompose from the dense architecture as the temperature increased from 500 to 600 °C, forming ∼1 nm micropores. The newly-obtained cavities provide sites for thermal-driven skeleton engineering (700-900 °C) to obtain ultramicropores. Based on the well-defined pore structure, the carbonized PAF solid revealed outstanding electrochemical performances, including high rate and long-term stability in a 6 M KOH electrolyte. Notably, the specific capacitance (294 F g-1) derived from the self-sacrificial template method exceeds the capability of all the other methods for the construction of ultramicropores including self-template strategy, carbonization of nanoparticles, and template-assisted strategy. The synthesis of ultramicroporous carbons via the self-sacrificial template route opens up a promising gate to adjust the porous structure for high-performance applications in supercapacitors.

Isolable 1-Butene Copper(I) Complexes and 1-Butene/Butane Separation Using Structurally Adaptable Copper Pyrazolates

Non-porous small molecule adsorbents such as {[3,5-(CF₃ )₂ Pz]Cu}₃ (where Pz=pyrazolate) are an emerging class of materials that display attractive features for ethene-ethane separation. This work examines the chemistry of fluorinated copper(I) pyrazolates {[3,5-(CF₃ )₂ Pz]Cu}₃ and {[4-Br-3,5-(CF₃ )₂ Pz]Cu}₃ with much larger 1-butene in both solution and solid state, and reports the isolation of rare 1-butene complexes of copper(I), {[3,5-(CF₃ )₂ Pz]Cu(H₂ C=CHC₂ H₅ )}₂ and {[4-Br-3,5-(CF₃ )₂ Pz]Cu(H₂ C=CHC₂ H₅ )}₂ and their structural, spectroscopic, and computational data. The copper-butene adduct formation in solution involves olefin-induced structural transformation of trinuclear copper(I) pyrazolates to dinuclear mixed-ligand systems. Remarkably, larger 1-butene is able to penetrate the dense solid material and to coordinate with copper(I) ions at high molar occupancy. A comparison to analogous ethene and propene complexes of copper(I) is also provided.

Gallate-Based Metal–Organic Frameworks, a New Family of Hybrid Materials and Their Applications: A Review

Within three decades of fundamental findings in research on metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), a new family of hybrid materials known as gallate-based MOFs, consisting of metal salt and gallic acid, have been of great interest. Due to the fact that gallic acid is acknowledged to display a range of bioactivities, gallate-based MOFs have been initially expended in biomedical applications. Recently, gallate-based MOFs have been gradually acting as new alternative materials in chemical industrial applications, in which they were first reported for the adsorptive separation of light hydrocarbon separations. However, to date, none of them have been related to CO2/CH4 separation. These porous materials have a bright future and can be kept in development for variety of applications in order to be applied in real industrial practices. Therefore, this circumstance creates a new opportunity to concentrate more on studies in CO2/CH4 applications by using porous material gallate-based MOFs. This review includes the description of recent gallate-based MOFs that presented remarkable properties in biomedical areas and gas adsorption and separation, as well as their future potential application.

Highly Active Gas Phase Organometallic Catalysis Supported Within Metal-Organic Framework Pores

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can act as a platform for the heterogenization of molecular catalysts, providing improved stability, allowing easy catalyst recovery and a route toward structural elucidation of the active catalyst. We have developed a MOF, 1, possessing vacant N,N-chelating sites which are accessible via the porous channels that penetrate the structure. In the present work, cationic rhodium(I) norbornadiene (NBD) and bis(ethylene) (ETH) complexes paired with both noncoordinating and coordinating anions have been incorporated into the N,N-chelation sites of 1 via postsynthetic metalation and facile anion exchange. Exploiting the crystallinity of the host framework, the immobilized Rh(I) complexes were structurally characterized using X-ray crystallography. Ethylene hydrogenation catalysis by 1·[Rh(NBD)]X and 1·[Rh(ETH)₂]X (X = Cl and BF₄) was studied in the gas phase (2 bar, 46 °C) to reveal that 1·[Rh(ETH)₂](BF₄) was the most active catalyst (TOF = 64 h^-1); the NBD materials and the chloride salt were notably less active. On the basis of these observations, the activity of the Rh(I) bis(ethylene) complexes, 1·[Rh(ETH)₂]BF₄ and 1·[Rh(ETH)₂]Cl, in butene isomerization was also studied using gas-phase NMR spectroscopy. Under one bar of butene at 46 °C, 1·[Rh(ETH)₂]BF₄ rapidly catalyzes the conversion of 1-butene to 2-butene with a TOF averaging 2000 h^-1 over five cycles. Notably, the chloride derivative, 1 [Rh(ETH)₂]Cl displays negligible activity in comparison. XPS analysis of the postcatalysis sample, supported by DFT calculations, suggest that the catalytic activity is inhibited by the strong interactions between a Rh(III) allyl hydride intermediate and the chloride anion.
