In Situ Construction of Spinel Coating on the Surface of a Lithium-Rich Manganese-Based Single Crystal for Inhibiting Voltage Fade

New information about the cyclable capacity fading process of a pouch cell with Li-rich layered oxide cathodes

Most studies investigate the cyclable capacity fading mechanism of Li-rich layered oxides (LLOs) from the microscopic structure level, lacking discussions about how the structure degradation influences the performance of the pouch cell precisely and quantitatively. Based on the analysis of the evolution of key parameters during the whole cycling period, a new transition-type fading mechanism is proposed. From the early-to-middle stage of the cycling period, polarization increases, most of which is interface-related, causing about 67% of the whole capacity loss. From the middle-to-late stage of the cycling period, active material losses turn out to be the dominating factor, inducing about 61% of the total capacity loss. Diffusion-related polarization, replacing the interface type, is responsible for most of the increased overpotential. Relative analysis confirms that during the early stage, the increase of the charge transfer resistance, induced by CEI (cathode electrolyte interface) growth and initial surface layered-structure degradation, is the main source of interface polarization. As the cycling evolves to the late stage, severe bulky structure degradation, including lattice-oxygen release, Li/Ni mixture and generation of a new spinel phase, turns out to be the major factor, causing further capacity fading.

Recent advances in lithium-rich manganese-based cathodes for high energy density lithium-ion batteries

The development of society challenges the limit of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in terms of energy density and safety. Lithium-rich manganese oxide (LRMO) is regarded as one of the most promising cathode materials owing to its advantages of high voltage and specific capacity (more than 250 mA h g^-1) as well as low cost. However, the problems of fast voltage/capacity fading, poor rate performance and the low initial Coulombic efficiency severely hinder its practical application. In this paper, we review the latest research advances of LRMO cathode materials, including crystal structure, electrochemical reaction mechanism, existing problems and modification strategies. In this review, we pay more attention to recent progress in modification methods, including surface modification, doping, morphology and structure design, binder and electrolyte additives, and integration strategies. It not only includes widely studied strategies such as composition and process optimization, coating, defect engineering, and surface treatment, but also introduces many relatively novel modification methods, such as novel coatings, grain boundary coating, gradient design, single crystal, ion exchange method, solid-state batteries and entropy stabilization strategy. Finally, we summarize the existing problems in the development of LRMO and put forward some perspectives on the further research.

Stabilizing Li-Rich Layered Cathode Materials Using a LiCoMnO4 Spinel Nanolayer for Li-Ion Batteries

Lithium-rich cathodes have excess lithium in the transition metal layer and exhibit an extremely high specific capacity and good energy density. However, they still have some disadvantages. Here, we propose LiCoMnO₄, a new nanolayer coating material with a spinel structure, to modify the surface of lithium cathode oxide (Li_7/6Mn_1/2Ni_1/6Co_1/6O₂) with a layered structure. The designed cathode with nanolayer spinel coating delivers an excellent reversible capacity, outstanding rate capability, and superior cycling ability whilst exhibiting discharge capacities of 300, 275, 220, and 166 mAh g^-1 at rates of 0.1 C at 2.0-4.8 V formation and 0.1, 1, and 5 C, respectively, between 2.0 and 4.6 V. The cycling ability and voltage fading at a high operational voltage of 4.9 V were also investigated, with results showing that the nanolayer spinel coating can depress the surface of the lithium cathode oxide layer, leading to phase transformation that enhances the electrochemical performance.

A Simple Gas-Solid Treatment for Surface Modification of Li-Rich Oxides Cathodes

Li-rich layered oxides with high capacity are expected to be the next generation of cathode materials. However, the irreversible and sluggish anionic redox reaction leads to the O₂ loss in the surface as well as the capacity and voltage fading. In the present study, a simple gas-solid treatment with ferrous oxalate has been proposed to uniformly coat a thin spinel phase layer with oxygen vacancy and simultaneously realize Fe-ion substitution in the surface. The integration of oxygen vacancy and spinel phase suppresses irreversible O₂ release, prevents electrolyte corrosion, and promotes Li-ion diffusion. In addition, the surface doping of Fe-ion can further stabilize the structure. Accordingly, the treated Feox-2 % cathode exhibits superior capacity retention of 86.4 % and 85.5 % at 1 C and 2 C to that (75.3 % and 75.0 %) of the pristine sample after 300 cycles, respectively. Then, the voltage fading is significantly suppressed to 0.0011 V per cycle at 2 C especially. The encouraging results may play a significant role in paving the practical application of Li-rich layered oxides cathode.

Demystifying the Lattice Oxygen Redox in Layered Oxide Cathode Materials of Lithium-Ion Batteries

The practical application of lithium-ion batteries suffers from low energy density and the struggle to satisfy the ever-growing requirements of the energy-storage Internet. Therefore, developing next-generation electrode materials with high energy density is of the utmost significance. There are high expectations with respect to the development of lattice oxygen redox (LOR)-a promising strategy for developing cathode materials as it renders nearly a doubling of the specific capacity. However, challenges have been put forward toward the deep-seated origins of the LOR reaction and if its whole potential could be effectively realized in practical application. In the following Review, the intrinsic science that induces the LOR activity and crystal structure evolution are extensively discussed. Moreover, a variety of characterization techniques for investigating these behaviors are presented. Furthermore, we have highlighted the practical restrictions and outlined the probable approaches of Li-based layered oxide cathodes for improving such materials to meet the practical applications.

In Situ Induced Surface Reconstruction of Single-Crystal Lithium-Ion Cathode Toward Effective Interface Compatibility

LiNi_xCo_yMn_1-x-yO₂ (x ≥ 0.5) layered oxide materials are generally considered as one of the most prospective candidates for lithium-ion battery (LIBs) cathodes due to their high specific capacity and working voltage. However, surface impurity species substantially degrade the electrochemical performance of LIBs. Herein, surface reconstruction from layered structure to disordered layer and rock-salt coherent region together with a uniform Li₂CO₃-dominant coating layer is first in situ constructed on the single-crystal LiNi_0.5Co_0.2Mn_0.3O₂ (NCM) material by a simple water treatment procedure. The unique surface structure is elucidated by Ar-sputtering-assisted X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and transmission electron microscopy (spherical aberration-corrected-scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and TEM). Meanwhile, neutron powder diffraction (NPD) indicates that the antisite defect concentration is mitigated in the treated materials. The modified samples display superior cycle stability with a capacity retention of up to 87.5% at 1C after 300 cycles, a high rate capacity of 151 mAh g^-1 at 5C, an elevated temperature (45 °C) cycling property with 80% capacity retention (4.5 V), and improved full-cell performance with 91% after 250 cycles at 1C. Importantly, postmortem examination on the cycled cathodes by time-of-flight secondary-ion mass spectroscopy (TOF-SIMS), XPS, TEM, and X-ray diffractometer (XRD) pattern further demonstrate that these results are mainly attributed to the thin cathode electrolyte interface (CEI) film and low solubility of transition-metal ions. Therefore, this expedition provides an opportunity to construct an effective armor for the interface compatibility and stability of LIBs.

Rate Performance Modification of a Lithium-Rich Manganese-Based Material through Surface Self-Doping and Coating Strategies

Lithium-rich manganese-based materials are currently considered to be highly promising cathode materials for next-generation lithium-ion batteries due to their high specific capacity (>250 mA h g^-1) and low cost. A key challenge for the commercialization of these lithium-rich manganese-based materials is their poor rate performance, which is caused by the low electronic conductivity and increasing interface charge transfer resistance produced by the side reaction during the cycling procedure. In this work, we try to improve the rate performance of a lithium-rich manganese-based material Li_1.2Mn_0.54Co_0.13Ni_0.13O₂ using a collaborative approach with Co-doping and Na_xCoO₂-coating methods. Cobalt doping can improve the electronic conductivity, and Na_xCoO₂ coating provides a convenient lithium-ion diffusion channel and moderately alleviates the inevitable decrease in cycling stability caused by cobalt doping. Under the synergistic effect of these two modification strategies, the surface and internal dynamics of the Li_1.2Mn_0.54Co_0.13Ni_0.13O₂ material are enhanced and its rate performance is considerably improved without decay of the cycle stability.

Accelerating the activation of Li2MnO3 in Li-rich high-Mn cathodes to improve its electrochemical performance

Li-rich high-Mn oxides, xLi2MnO3·(1 - x)LiMO2 (x ≥ 0.5, M = Co, Ni, Mn…), have attracted extensive research interest due to their high specific capacity and low cost. However, slow Li2MnO3 activation and poor cycling stability have affected their electrochemical performance. Herein, to solve these problems, morphology regulation and LiAlF4 coating strategies have been synergistically applied to a Li-rich high-Mn material Li1.7Mn0.8Co0.1Ni0.1O2.7 (HM-811). This dual-strategy successfully promotes the activation process of the Li2MnO3 phase and thus improves the electrochemical performance of HM-811. Theoretical computation indicates that the LiAlF4 layer has a lower Li+ migration barrier than the HM-811 matrix, so it could boost the diffusion of Li+ ions and promote the activation of the Li2MnO3 phase. Benefiting from the morphology regulation and LiAlF4 coating, the HM-811 cathode shows a high initial charge capacity of >300 mA h g-1. In addition, the modified HM-811 could deliver superior electrochemical performance even at a low temperature of -20 °C. This work provides a new approach for developing high performance cathode materials for next-generation Li-ion batteries.

Improved Electrochemical Performance of 0.5Li2MnO3·0.5LiNi0.5Mn0.5O2 Cathode Materials for Lithium Ion Batteries Synthesized by Ionic-Liquid-Assisted Hydrothermal Method

Well-dispersed Li-rich Mn-based 0.5Li₂MnO₃·0.5LiNi0.5Mn_0.5O₂ nanoparticles with diameter ranging from 50 to 100 nm are synthesized by a hydrothermal method in the presence of N-hexyl pyridinium tetrafluoroborate ionic liquid ([HPy][BF4]). The microstructures and electrochemical performance of the prepared cathode materials are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and electrochemical measurements. The XRD results show that the sample prepared by ionic-liquid-assisted hydrothermal method exhibits a typical Li-rich Mn-based pure phase and lower cation mixing. SEM and TEM images indicate that the extent of particle agglomeration of the ionic-liquid-assisted sample is lower compared to the traditional hydrothermal sample. Electrochemical test results indicate that the materials synthesized by ionic-liquid-assisted hydrothermal method exhibit better rate capability and cyclability. Besides, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results suggest that the charge transfer resistance of 0.5Li₂MnO₃· 0.5LiNi0.5Mn_0.5O₂ synthesized by ionic-liquid-assisted hydrothermal method is much lower, which enhances the reaction kinetics.
