Abstract
The ion permeability and selectivity of membranes are crucial in nanofluidic behavior, impacting industries ranging from traditional to advanced manufacturing. Herein, we demonstrate the engineering of ion-conductive membranes featuring angstrom-scale ion-transport channels by introducing ionic polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers for ion separation. The exterior quaternary ammonium-rich structure contributes to significant electrostatic charge exclusion due to enhanced local charge density; the interior protoplasmic channels of PAMAM dendrimer are assembled to provide additional degrees of free volume. This facilitates the monovalent ion transfer while maintaining continuity and efficient ion screening. The dendrimer-assembled hybrid membrane achieves high monovalent ion permeance of 2.81 mol m-2 h-1 (K+), reaching excellent mono/multivalent selectivity up to 20.1 (K+/Mg2+) and surpassing the permselectivities of state-of-the-art membranes. Both experimental results and simulating calculations suggest that the impressive ion selectivity arises from the significant disparity in transport energy barrier between mono/multivalent ions, induced by the "exterior-interior" synergistic effects of bifunctional membrane channels.

Abstract
One of the most dangerous types of pollution to the environment is oily wastewater, which is produced from a number of industrial sources and can cause damage to the environment, people, and creatures. To overcome this issue, membrane technology as an advanced method has been considered for treating oily wastewater due to its stability, high removal efficiency, and simplicity in scaling up. Membrane fouling, or the accumulation of oil droplets at or within the membrane pores, compromises the efficiency of membrane separation and water flux. In the last decade, the fabrication of membranes with specific wettability to reduce fouling has received much consideration. The purpose of this article is to offer a literature overview of all fabricated anti-fouling super(wetting and anti-wetting) membranes for applicable membrane processes for the separation of immiscible and emulsified oil/water mixtures. In this review, we first explain membrane fouling and discuss methods for preventing it. Afterwards, in all membrane separation processes, including pressure-driven, gravity-driven, and thermal-driven, membranes based on the form and density of oil are categorized as oil-removing or water-removing with special wettability, and then their wettability modification with different materials is particularly discussed. Finally, the prospect of anti-fouling membrane fabrication in the future is presented.

Abstract
Fabricating membranes with superior antifouling property and long-term high performance is in great demand for efficient oil-water separation. Herein, we reported a reaction enabled surface segregation method for antifouling membrane fabrication, in which the pre-synthesized fluorinated ternary copolymer Pluronic F127 was coordinated with Ti4+ as segregation additive in the membrane casting bath. Additionally, tannic acid was utilized to enhance the self-assembly of the copolymer in the coagulation bath, and freshly-biomineralized TiO2 was anchored into the membrane surface through hydrogen bond. A hydrogel layer was constructed onto the membrane surface with synergistically tailored heterogeneous chemical composition and heterogeneous geometrical roughness. The dual-heterogeneous membrane exhibited hydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic features, resulting in high water flux (621.7 L m-2 h-1) at low operation pressure of 0.05 MPa and an excellent antifouling property (only 4.8% flux decline during 24-hour filtration). In situ reaction enabled surface segregation method will accelerate the development of antifouling membranes for oil-in-water emulsion separation.

Abstract
Atherosclerosis (AS), a leading cause of death worldwide, is a chronic inflammatory disease rich in lipids and reactive oxygen species (ROS) within plaques. Therefore, lowering lipid and ROS levels is effective in treating AS and reducing AS-induced mortality. In this study, an intelligent biomimetic drug delivery system that specifically responded to both shear stress and ROS microenvironment was developed, consisting of red blood cells (RBCs) and cross-linked polyethyleneimine nanoparticles (SA PEI) loaded with a lipid-lowering drug simvastatin acid (SA), and RBCs were self-assembled with SA PEI to obtain biresponsive SA PEI@RBCs for the treatment of AS. SA PEI could achieve sustained release of SA in response to ROS and reduce ROS and lipid levels to achieve the purpose of treating AS. Shear stress model experiments showed that SA PEI@RBCs could respond to the high shear stress level (100 dynes/cm2) at plaques, realizing the desorption and enrichment of SA PEI and improving the therapeutic efficiency of SA PEI@RBCs. In vitro and in vivo experiments have confirmed that SA PEI@RBCs exhibits better in vivo safety and therapeutic efficacy than SA PEI and free SA. Therefore, shaping SA PEI@RBCs into a biomimetic drug delivery system with dual sensitivity to ROS and shear stress is an effective strategy and treatment to facilitate their delivery into plaques.

Abstract
An environmentally friendly pore size-controlled, superhydrophobic polylactic acid (PLA) membrane was successfully prepared by a simpler freeze solidification phase separation method (FSPS) and solution impregnation, which has application prospects in the field of oil-water separation. The pore size and structure of the membrane were adjusted by different solvent ratios and solution impregnation ratios. The PLA-FSPS membrane after solution impregnation (S-PLA-FSPS) had the characteristics of uniform pore size, superhydrophobicity and super lipophilicity, its surface roughness Ra was 338 nm, and the contact angle to water was 151°. The S-PLA-FSPS membrane was used for the oil-water separation. The membrane oil flux reached 16,084 L·m-2·h-1, and the water separation efficiency was 99.7%, which was much higher than that of other oil-water separation materials. In addition, the S-PLA-FSPS membrane could also be applied for the adsorption and removal of oil slicks and underwater heavy oil. The S-PLA-FSPS membrane has great application potential in the field of oil-water separation.

Abstract
Membrane-based water treatment processes have been established as a powerful approach for clean water production. However, despite the significant advances made in terms of rejection and flux, provision of sustainable and energy-efficient water production is restricted by the inevitable issue of membrane fouling, known to be the major contributor to the elevated operating costs due to frequent chemical cleaning, increased transmembrane resistance, and deterioration of permeate flux. This review provides an overview of fouling control strategies in different membrane processes, such as microfiltration, ultrafiltration, membrane bioreactors, and desalination via reverse osmosis and forward osmosis. Insights into the recent advancements are discussed and efforts made in terms of membrane development, modules arrangement, process optimization, feed pretreatment, and fouling monitoring are highlighted to evaluate their overall impact in energy- and cost-effective water treatment. Major findings in four key aspects are presented, including membrane surface modification, modules design, process integration, and fouling monitoring. Among the above mentioned anti-fouling strategies, a large part of research has been focused on membrane surface modifications using a number of anti-fouling materials whereas much less research has been devoted to membrane module advancements and in-situ fouling monitoring and control. At the end, a critical analysis is provided for each anti-fouling strategy and a rationale framework is provided for design of efficient membranes and process for water treatment.

Abstract
Design of charged materials for demulsification of ionic surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water emulsions is emerging in recent years. Herein, a superwetting stainless steel mesh with Janus surface charges (Janus SSM) was prepared by respectively brush-coating polyethyleneimine/aminated carbon nanotubes (PEI/CNTs-NH2) coating and polyacrylic acid (PAA) coating on its two sides. Two demulsification mechanisms, i.e., electrostatic attraction-repulsion and electrostatic repulsion-attraction based on the synergism of two oppositely charged sides were proposed. Combined with the superwettability and optimized pore size, the Janus SSM can successfully be used to demulsify, coalesce and separate emulsions. In detail, the Janus SSM exhibited separation efficiencies of up to 99.29%, 97.12% for SDS- and DTAC-stabilized oil-in-water emulsions respectively under the electrostatic attraction-repulsion mechanism, and up to 97.10%, 98.57% under the electrostatic repulsion-attraction mechanism. The results indicated that the electrostatic attraction-repulsion mechanism proposed in this study is conductive to achieving higher efficiency in emulsion separation. Furthermore, excellent durability extend the operation life of Janus SSM. This Janus SSM, which combines opposite charges on its two sides, may advance the development of charged materials for emulsion separation.

Abstract
Oil spills and pollution of oily wastewater from the industrial field have not only caused serious economic losses but also imposed a huge threat to human beings. To solve these issues, the development of advanced materials and technologies for the purification of oily wastewater has garnered great concern and become a central topic. Hence, a superhydrophobic polyurethane (PU) sponge adsorbent is designed via mussel-inspired coatings by double bonds to PU sponge, followed by in situ polymerization with 1-hexadecene. The prepared PU sponge adsorbent (PU@DB@16ene sponge) showed outstanding mechanical properties including low density, high porosity, and compression recovery ability. Moreover, the prepared PU@DB@16ene sponge showed excellent adsorption of oils and organic solvents (up to 187 g g-1) and exhibited superior recyclability. Particularly, when the PU@DB@16ene sponge was applied in the continuous and rapid separation of oils and organic solvents, it still showed desired properties at a rapid velocity of 8.3 L m-3 s-1. Additionally, the PU@DB@16ene sponge could not only adsorb organic solvents in laboratories but also adsorb crude oil and industrial waxy oil in practice. Therefore, we proposed a simple and convenient method to construct PU sponge absorbents with great application prospects, which would be highly valuable for crude oil and organic solvents cleanup.

Abstract
Atherosclerosis is an important pathological basis for cardiovascular disease. Thus, the treatment of atherosclerosis can effectively improve the prognosis and reduce the mortality of cardiovascular diseases. In this study, we developed simvastatin acid (SA)-loaded cross-linked dendrimer nanoparticles (SA PAM) that were adsorbed to the surface of red blood cells (RBCs) to obtain SA PAM@RBCs, a ROS and shear stress dual response drug delivery system for the treatment of atherosclerosis. SA PAM could continuously release SA in an H2O2-triggered manner, and effectively eliminate excessive H2O2 in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells, achieving the target of using the special microenvironment at the plaque to release drugs. At the same time, the shear sensitive model also proved that only 12.4% of SA PAM detached from the RBCs under low shear stress (20 dynes per cm2), while 61.3% SA PAM desorbed from the RBCs under a high shear stress (100 dynes per cm2) stimulus, revealing that SA PAM could desorb in response to the shear stress stimulus. Both the FeCl3 model and ApoE-/- model showed that SA PAM@RBCs had better therapeutic effects than free SA, and with excellent safety in vivo. Therefore, a biomimetic drug delivery system with dual sensitivity to ROS and shear stress would become a promising strategy for the treatment of atherosclerosis.

Abstract
In this work, novel cyclodextrin-dendrimers nanocomposites functionalized high performance liquid chromatography stationary phases were developed for efficient separation of aromatic compounds. β-cyclodextrin was grafted onto the surface of silica gel matrix with poly (amidoamine) dendrimers as spacers. Scanning electron microscope, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, element analysis and Brunner-Emmet-Teller measurement proved the successful grafting of cyclodextrin-dendrimers nanocomposites. The obtained stationary phases showed satisfactory separation effects for alkylbenzenes and benzenesulfonic acid substituents in reverse phase liquid chromatography mode. Weak hydrophilic and ion exchange interactions were also confirmed at the same time. Meanwhile, the effects of dendrimers and cyclodextrin on the chromatography performance were discussed. Separation mechanism of the stationary phases were verified by two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance technology, and the result implied that the proposed cyclodextrin-dendrimers nanocomposites functionalized stationary phases have significant prospects for separation and determination of more aromatic compounds in future.

Abstract
Highly efficient oil/water separation ability is a prerequisite for the actual application of the membranes in oily sewage treatment, which is closely related to the surface feature and the porous structure of the membranes. In this work, the electrospun poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) porous fibers were firstly fabricated through blend-electrospinning with poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) and then treating in distilled water. The results showed that the fibers exhibited the sponge-like porous structure, and a few PVP was reserved in the fibers due to the relatively good interaction between PVDF and PVP. The fibrous membrane exhibited high porosity, super-wettability with freely switchable super-lipophilicity and super-hydrophilicity. The oil adsorption capacities as well as the oil and water fluxes were measured, and the oil adsorption capacities were varied in the range of 22.7-76.0 g/g, and oil and water fluxes were 54,737.3 and 56,869.9 L/(m2h), respectively. Specifically, the PVDF porous fibrous membranes showed excellent separation abilities and they could highly efficiently separate oil from oil-in-water emulsions or separate water from water-in-oil emulsions, accompanied with the extremely high water or oil flux. This work confirms that the PVDF membranes composed of the porous fibers can be used in wastewater treatment.

Abstract
Stimuli-responsive surfaces with wettability change between superhydrophilic and superhydrophobic are susceptible to oil contamination which often ruins the surface. Herein, a coating with pH-switchable wettability transition between superamphiphobic and superhydrophilic-superoleophobic is achieved by rationally designing oleophobic/pH-responsive polymer heterogeneous chemistry. Fabrics modified with this coating show repellency to both water and oils, while upon exposure to acidic water (pH = 1) the fabrics change to be superhydrophilic-superoleophobic within a short response time of <5 s. More importantly, the superamphiphobicity of the fabric can be restored under mild alkaline condition (pH = 10), and the transition is reversible for many cycles. The effective in situ or ex situ wettability change under acidic/alkaline water treatment makes the coated fabric capable of separating oil-water mixture or even some mixtures of immiscible organic solvents. In addition, the coated fabric is also demonstrated to be promising as a new class of functional fabrics that provide protection against water and many oils in one condition, and can change to be hygroscopic, anti-static, oil-repellent and anti-oil-fouling in the other condition for improved wear comfort and self-cleaning.

Abstract
As industrialization has spread all around the world, the problems of water pollution such as offshore oil spill and industrial sewage discharge have spread with it. Although many new separation materials have been successfully developed to deal with this crisis, a large number of water treatment materials only focus on the treatment of classified single water pollutant under mild conditions. It is a great challenge to treat soluble contaminants such as water-soluble dyes and insoluble contaminants, for example, emulsified oils simultaneously in a strong corrosive environment. Herein, in this work, corrosive resistance and multifunctional surface on a commercial polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) membrane via a tunicate-inspired gallic acid-assisted accurate-deposition strategy is created. Owing to the titanium-carboxylic coordination bonding and accurate-deposition strategy, the as-prepared membrane exhibits extraordinary stability, facing various harsh environmental challenges and incredibly corrosive situations (e.g., 4 M NaOH, 4 M HCl, and saturated NaCl solution). The robust multifunctional surface also endows commercial PVDF membrane with the ability for in situ separation and adsorption of surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water (corrosive and dyed) emulsions with high adsorption efficiencies up to 99.9%, separation efficiencies above 99.6%, and permeation flux as high as 15,698 ± 211 L/(m2·h·bar). Furthermore, the resultant membrane can be regenerated facilely and rapidly by flushing a small amount of HCl (4 M) or NaOH (4 M), making the corrosive resistance membrane attain a long-term and high-efficiency application for complex dyed wastewater treatment. Therefore, the multifunctional membrane has a broad application prospect in the industrial field.

Abstract
Superhydrophobic membranes are desirable for separation of water-in-oil emulsions, membrane distillation, and membrane condensation. However, the lack of large-scale manufacture methods of superhydrophobic membranes hampers their widespread applications. Here, a facile method of coaxial electrospinning is provided to manufacture superhydrophobic membranes for the ultrafast separation of water-in-oil emulsions. Under the high-voltage electric field, the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-coated polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofibers and PDMS microspheres with PVDF nanobulges were integrated together during the electrospinning process. Moreover, asymmetric composite membranes with selective layers are designed to reduce the resistance of the mass transfer. Consequently, the as-prepared asymmetric composite membrane exhibits an ultrafast permeance and excellent separation efficiency of about 99.6%, outperforming most of the state-of-the-art membranes reported previously. Most importantly, the membrane could be as large as 770 cm2, could be manufactured continuously, and could be easily enlarged further via tailoring the roller receptor, showing strong promise in the separation of water-in-oil emulsions.

Abstract
During the removal of pollutants from wastewater, the underwater compressibility of three-dimensional biomass materials is the main factor determining their properties and service life. To construct a chitosan (CS)-based material with underwater superelasticity, a bidirectional freezing technique was used to introduce bamboo fibers (BFs) as bridges between CS lamellae to form a biomimetic CS/BFs monolith with an architecture similar to Thalia dealbata stems. BFs completely penetrated CS lamellae from the top down, which served as springs to dampen the elastic deformation during compressive cycles. After 10,000 underwater compressive cycles at 60% strain, the plastic deformation was negligible, and after 100 cycles at 90% strain, the monolith retained 93.8% of the maximum stress. Moreover, the CS/BFs monolith was loaded with CaCO3 nanoparticles via compression-release-compression to obtain a CS/BFs/CaCO3 monolith that exhibited excellent water purification capabilities. The CS/BFs/CaCO3 monolith removed water-soluble dyes, heavy-metal ions, and emulsified oils from water with a high separation efficiency by simple squeezing and pumping methods. The novel pumping technology using the CS/BFs/CaCO3 monolith provides a facile and rapid method to separate oil-in-water emulsions (maximum water flux of 11,776.9 L m-2 h-1). Therefore, the CS/BFs/CaCO3 monolith with underwater superelasticity has great potential applications for wastewater treatment.

Abstract
Membrane fouling is the obstacle that limits the practical application of membranes in efficient oil/water separation. The main reason for membrane fouling is the deposition of the dispersed phase (e.g., oil) on the membrane surface based on the sieving effect. The key challenge for solving the fouling problem is to achieve fouling removal via rationally considering hydrodynamics and interfacial science. Herein, a poly(vinylidene fluoride) membrane with a dual-scale hyperporous structure and rational wettability is designed to achieve a continuous "nonfouling" separation for oil/water emulsions via membrane demulsification. The membrane is fabricated via dual-phase separation (vapor and nonsolvent) and modified by in situ polymerization of poly(hydroxyethyl methylacrylate) (contact angle 59 ± 1°). The membrane shows stable permeability (1078 ± 50 Lm-2h-1bar-1) and high separation efficiency (>99.0%) in 2 h of continuous cross-flow without physicochemical washing compared to superwetting membranes. The permeation is composed of two distinct immiscible liquid phases via coalescence demulsification. The surface shearing and pore throat collision coalescence demulsification mechanism is proposed, and rational interface wettability facilitates the foulant/membrane interaction for "nonfouling" separation. Beyond superwetting surfaces, a new strategy for achieving "nonfouling" emulsion separation by designing membranes with a dual-scale hyperporous structure and rational wettability is provided.

Abstract
A new NiAlFe layered double hydroxide/polydopamine/polyvinylidene fluoride (NiAlFe LDH/PDA/PVDF) membrane was fabricated by in-situ growth of LDH on the PDA modified PVDF membrane. The as-prepared membrane possesses a nano/microscale rough structural surface and displays the superior wettability of superhydrophilicity in air and underwater superoleophobicity. Combining the favourable features of superwettability and hierarchical rough structure, the NiAlFe LDH/PDA/PVDF membrane could effectively separate a series of oil-in-water emulsions with high efficiency (>99%) and high permeation flux (925-1913 L m-2 h-1 bar-1). Besides, owing to the light harvest ability of NiAlFe LDH, the relevant membrane also can be applied as a photocatalysis paper for the light-driven treatment of antibiotic residue in aqueous solution. In which, NiAlFe LDH/PDA/PVDF membrane can effectively degrade typical antibiotic tetracycline within 20 min under UV light irradiation, exhibiting excellent photocatalytic activity. In addition, cyclic experiments demonstrate that NiAlFe LDH/PDA/PVDF membrane has excellent stability and reusability both in oil-in-water emulsion separation and photocatalytic reaction. In general, the findings of this research demonstrate that photo-response LDH modified membranes have potential multiple applications in wastewater treatment.

Abstract
Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is an important mediator in biological medicine, disease diagnosis and environmental analyses and therefore it is essential to develop a detection approach for H2O2 in physical environments. Herein, we designed and prepared a series of AuNP-containing nanocomposites (AuNPs@NGO-PEG, AuNPs@G1-PAMAM-NGO-PEG and AuNPs@G3-PAMAM-NGO-PEG) for enhanced non-enzymatic H2O2 detection. We firstly demonstrated functionalized nanographene oxide (NGO) based materials, which combined advantages of biocompatible poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), hyperbranched polyamidamine (PAMAM) dendrimer and thiol active site, as compatible platforms. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were then aptly in situ grown on these functionalized NGO based materials via the reduction of HAuCl4 under mild conditions, i.e. AuNPs@NGO-PEG, AuNPs@G1-PAMAM-NGO-PEG and AuNPs@G3-PAMAM-NGO-PEG nanocomposites, which possess stable and uniform AuNPs standing on the functionalized NGO sheets. For H2O2 detection, these nanocomposites were cast on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) conveniently, i.e. GCE/AuNPs@NGO-PEG, GCE/AuNPs@G1-PAMAM-NGO-PEG and GCE/AuNPs@G3-PAMAM-NGO-PEG. It is evident that these GCEs could be applied as efficient non-enzymatic H2O2 detectors resulting from the corresponding cyclic voltammetric curves and typical ready-state amperometric curves. GCE/AuNPs@G1-PAMAM-NGO-PEG exhibited the fastest electron transfer rate among these modified GCEs. We envisage that these GCEs could provide efficient sensors for H2O2 detection and a new strategy for sensor design.

Micro/Nanoscale Structured Superhydrophilic and Underwater Superoleophobic Hybrid-Coated Mesh for High-Efficiency Oil/Water Separation. Polymers (Basel) 2020; 12:polym12061378. Abstract
A novel micro/nanoscale rough structured superhydrophilic hybrid-coated mesh that shows underwater superoleophobic behavior is fabricated by spray casting or dipping nanoparticle–polymer suspensions on stainless steel mesh substrates. Water droplets can spread over the mesh completely; meanwhile, oil droplets can roll off the mesh at low tilt angles without any penetration. Besides overcoming the oil-fouling problem of many superhydrophilic coatings, this superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic mesh can be used to separate oil and water. The simple method used here to prepare the organic–inorganic hybrid coatings successfully produced controllable micro-nano binary roughness and also achieved a rough topography of micro-nano binary structure by controlling the content of inorganic particles. The mechanism of oil–water separation by the superhydrophilic and superoleophobic membrane is rationalized by considering capillary mechanics. Tetraethyl orathosilicate (TEOS) as a base was used to prepare the nano-SiO2 solution as a nano-dopant through a sol-gel process, while polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was used as the film binder and glutaraldehyde as the cross-linking agent; the mixture was dip-coated on the surface of 300-mesh stainless steel mesh to form superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic film. Properties of nano-SiO2 represented by infrared spectroscopy and surface topography of the film observed under scanning electron microscope (SEM) indicated that the film surface had a coarse micro–nano binary structure; the effect of nano-SiO2 doping amount on the film’s surface topography and the effect of such surface topography on hydrophilicity of the film were studied; contact angle of water on such surface was tested as 0° by the surface contact angle tester and spread quickly; the underwater contact angle to oil was 158°, showing superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic properties. The effect of the dosing amount of cross-linking agent to the waterproof swelling property and the permeate flux of the film were studied; the oil–water separation effect of the film to oil–water suspension and oil–water emulsion was studied too, and in both cases the separation efficiency reached 99%, which finally reduced the oil content to be lower than 50 mg/L. The effect of filtration times to permeate flux was studied, and it was found that the more hydrophilic the film was, the stronger the stain resistance would be, and the permeate flux would gradually decrease along with the increase of filtration times.
