Synergetic Effects of Nanoscale ALD-HfO2 Coatings and Bionic Microstructures for Antiadhesive Surgical Electrodes: Improved Cutting Performance, Antibacterial Property, and Biocompatibility

The high temperature induced by surgical electrodes is highly susceptible to severe surface adhesion and thermal damage to adjacent tissues, which is a major challenge in improving the quality of electrosurgery. Herein, we reported a coupled electrode with micro/nano hierarchical structures fabricated by depositing nanoscale hafnium oxide (HfO2) coatings on bionic microstructures (BMs) via laser texturing, acid washing, and atomic layer deposition (ALD) techniques. The synergistic effect of HfO2 coatings and BMs greatly enhanced the hemophobicity of the electrode with a blood contact angle of 162.15 ± 3.16°. Furthermore, the coupled surface was proven to have excellent antiadhesive properties to blood when heated above 100 °C, and the underlying mechanism was discussed. Further experiments showed that the coupled electrode had significant advantages in reducing cutting forces, thermal damage, and tissue adhesion mass. Moreover, the antibacterial rates against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were 97.2% and 97.9%, respectively. In addition, the noncytotoxicity levels of HfO2 coatings were verified by cell apoptosis and cycle assays, indirectly endowing the coupled electrode with biocompatibility. Overall, the coupled electrode was shown to have broad potential for application in the field of electrosurgery, and this work could provide new insights into antiadhesion properties under high-temperature conditions.

Surface modifications of biomaterials in different applied fields

Biomaterial implantation into the human body plays a key role in the medical field and biological applications. Increasing the life expectancy of biomaterial implants, reducing the rejection reaction inside the human body and reducing the risk of infection are the problems in this field that need to be solved urgently. The surface modification of biomaterials can change the original physical, chemical and biological properties and improve the function of materials. This review focuses on the application of surface modification techniques in various fields of biomaterials reported in the past few years. The surface modification techniques include film and coating synthesis, covalent grafting, self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), plasma surface modification and other strategies. First, a brief introduction to these surface modification techniques for biomaterials is given. Subsequently, the review focuses on how these techniques change the properties of biomaterials, and evaluates the effects of modification on the cytocompatibility, antibacterial, antifouling and surface hydrophobic properties of biomaterials. In addition, the implications for the design of biomaterials with different functions are discussed. Finally, based on this review, it is expected that the biomaterials have development prospects in the medical field.

Dry powder coating in additive manufacturing

Dry powder coating is used in many industries to tailor the bulk solid characteristics of cohesive powders. Within this paper, the state of the art of dry coating of feedstock materials for powder based additive manufacturing (AM) processes will be reviewed. The focus is on feedstock materials for powder bed fusion AM processes, such as powder bed fusion of polymers with a laser beam and powder bed fusion of metals with lasers or an electron beam. Powders of several microns to several ten microns in size are used and the feedstock’s bulk solid properties, especially the flowability and packing density are of immanent importance in different process steps in particular for powder dosing and spreading of powder layers onto the building area. All these properties can be tuned by dry particle coating. Moreover, possibilities to improve AM processability and to manipulate the resulting microstructure (c.f. grain refinement, dispersion strengthening) by adhering nanoparticles on the powders will be discussed. The effect of dry coating on the obtained powder properties along the whole AM process chain and the resulting part properties is assessed. Moreover, appropriate characterization methods for bulk solid properties of dry-coated AM powders are critically discussed.
