Nested Formation of Calcium Carbonate Polymorphs in a Bacterial Surface Membrane with a Graded Nanoconfinement: An Evolutionary Strategy to Ensure Bacterial Survival

Multilevel Micronanoscale Texture Effects on Fly Wing Membrane-Water Droplet Interaction

The wettable surface or nonwettable surface that is derived from a multilevel micronanoscale structure is abundant in nature and biomimetic commodities. Those hoverflies with the seta-coated wing membrane detached from impacting free-falling raindrops were observed in static states. A hoverfly wing membrane with well-ordered setae was identified as a robust nonwettable surface, and the static water contact angle θ on the wing membrane at the microscopic scale is 136.84 ± 0.98°. Hoverfly wing membrane-water droplet interaction with the actual truth and the theoretical models was discussed and indicated that the theoretical calculation might not state the actual situation, arising from the membrane or seta-drop-bubble interaction and those multilevel micronanoscale structure characteristics on the wing membrane. Detailed investigation on nonwettable surface-wettable surface transformation with surface CaCO3 accumulation in a carbonization reaction and the characteristic transformation toward the hoverfly wing membrane with the multilevel micronanoscale structure was carried out. Then, the CaCO3 accumulation on PDMS texture films was carried out and the static water contact angle θ was tested. Those observations offer ideas to fabricate artificial films with a multilevel micronanoscale structure that could obtain some characteristics, i.e., nonwettable surface-wettable surface transformation.

Bacterial templated carbonate mineralization: insights from concave-type crystals induced by Curvibacter lanceolatus strain HJ-1

The elucidation of carbonate crystal growth mechanisms contributes to a deeper comprehension of microbial-induced carbonate precipitation processes. In this research, the Curvibacter lanceolatus HJ-1 strain, well-known for its proficiency in inducing carbonate mineralization, was employed to trigger the formation of concave-type carbonate minerals. The study meticulously tracked the temporal alterations in the culture solution and conducted comprehensive analyses of the precipitated minerals' mineralogy and morphology using advanced techniques such as X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, focused ion beam, and transmission electron microscopy. The findings unequivocally demonstrate that concave-type carbonate minerals are meticulously templated by bacterial biofilms and employ calcified bacteria as their fundamental structural components. The precise morphological evolution pathway can be delineated as follows: initiation with the formation of bacterial biofilms, followed by the aggregation of calcified bacterial clusters, ultimately leading to the emergence of concave-type minerals characterized by disc-shaped, sunflower-shaped, and spherical morphologies.

Insight into biomolecular interaction-based non-classical crystallization of bacterial biocement

In an attempt to draw a correlation between calcium carbonate (CaCO3) precipitation and biomacromolecules such as extracellular polymeric substances and enzyme activity in biomineralizing microbe, this report aims to elucidate the ureolytic and ammonification route in Paenibacillus alkaliterrae to explore the possible role of organic biomolecule(s) present on cell surface in mediating nucleation and crystallization of biogenic CaCO3. After 168 h of biomineralization in ureolysis and ammonification, 2.2 g/l and 0.87 g/l of CaCO3 precipitates were obtained, respectively. The highest carbonic anhydrase activity (31.8 µmoles/min/ml) was evidenced in ammonification as opposed to ureolysis (24.8 µmoles/min/ml). Highest urease activity reached up to 9.26 µmoles/min/ml in ureolytic pathway. Extracellular polymeric substances such as polysaccharides and proteins were found to have a vital role not only in the nucleation and crystal growth but also in addition direct polymorphic fate of CaCO3 nanoparticles. EPS production was higher during ammonification (3.1 mg/ml) than in ureolysis (0.72 mg/ml). CaCO3 nanoparticle-associated proteins were found to be 0.82 mg/ml in ureolysis and 0.56 mg/ml in ammonification. After 30 days of biomineralization, all the polymorphic forms stabilized to calcite in ureolysis but in ammonification vaterite predominated. In our study, we showed that organic template-mediated prokaryotic biomineralization follows the non-classical nucleation and varying proportions of these organic components causes selective polymorphism of CaCO3 nanoparticles. Overall, the findings are expected to further the fundamental understanding of enzymes, EPS-driven non-classical nucleation of CaCO3, and we foresee the design of fit-for-purpose futuristic biominerals arising from such renewed understanding of biomineralization. Calcium carbonate: controlled synthesis, surface functionalization, and nanostructured materials

Calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) is an important inorganic mineral in biological and geological systems. Traditionally, it is widely used in plastics, papermaking, ink, building materials, textiles, cosmetics, and food. Over the last decade, there has been rapid development in the controlled synthesis and surface modification of CaCO₃, the stabilization of amorphous CaCO₃ (ACC), and CaCO₃-based nanostructured materials. In this review, the controlled synthesis of CaCO₃ is first examined, including Ca²⁺-CO₃^2- systems, solid-liquid-gas carbonation, water-in-oil reverse emulsions, and biomineralization. Advancing insights into the nucleation and crystallization of CaCO₃ have led to the development of efficient routes towards the controlled synthesis of CaCO₃ with specific sizes, morphologies, and polymorphs. Recently-developed surface modification methods of CaCO₃ include organic and inorganic modifications, as well as intensified surface reactions. The resultant CaCO₃ can then be further engineered via template-induced biomineralization and layer-by-layer assembly into porous, hollow, or core-shell organic-inorganic nanocomposites. The introduction of CaCO₃ into nanostructured materials has led to a significant improvement in the mechanical, optical, magnetic, and catalytic properties of such materials, with the resultant CaCO₃-based nanostructured materials showing great potential for use in biomaterials and biomedicine, environmental remediation, and energy production and storage. The influences that the preparation conditions and additives have on ACC preparation and stabilization are also discussed. Studies indicate that ACC can be used to construct environmentally-friendly hybrid films, supramolecular hydrogels, and drug vehicles. Finally, the existing challenges and future directions of the controlled synthesis and functionalization of CaCO₃ and its expanding applications are highlighted.
