Abstract
This study investigates the methods for controlling porosity in thermal pipes manufactured using selective laser melting (SLM) technology. Experiments conducted include water permeability tests and surface roughness measurements, which are complemented by SEM image ML-based analysis for pore recognition. The results elucidate the impact of SLM printing parameters on water permeability. Specifically, an increase in hatch and point distances leads to a linear rise in permeability, while higher laser power diminishes permeability. Using machine learning (ML) techniques, precise pore identification on SEM images depicting surface microstructures of the samples is achieved. The average percentage of the surface area containing detected pores for microstructure samples printed with laser parameters (laser power (W) _ hatch distance (µm) _ point distance (µm)) 175_ 80_80 was found to be 5.2%, while for 225_120_120, it was 4.2%, and for 275_160_160, it was 3.8%. Pore recognition was conducted using the Haar feature-based method, and the optimal patch size was determined to be 36 pixels on monochrome images of microstructures with a magnification of 33×, which were acquired using a Leica S9 D microscope.

Abstract
Massive unmelted Ti6Al4 V (Ti64) particles presented across all surfaces of additively manufactured Ti64 scaffolds significantly impacted the designed surface topography, mechanical properties, and permeability, reducing the osseointegration of the scaffolds. In this study, the proposed flowing acid etching (FAE) method presented high efficiency in eliminating Ti64 particles and enhancing the surface modification capacity across all surfaces of Ti64 scaffolds. The Ti64 particles across all surfaces of the scaffolds were completely removed effectively and evenly. The surface topography of the scaffolds closely resembled the design after the 75 s FAE treatment. The actual elastic modulus of the treated scaffolds (3.206 ± 0.040 GPa) was closer to the designed value (3.110 GPa), and a micrometer-scale structure was constructed on the inner and outer surfaces of the scaffolds after the 90 s FAE treatment. However, the yield strength of scaffolds was reduced to 89.743 ± 0.893 MPa from 118.251 ± 0.982 MPa after the 90 s FAE treatment. The FAE method also showed higher efficiency in decreasing the roughness and enhancing the hydrophilicity and surface energy of all of the surfaces. The FAE treatment improved the permeability of scaffolds efficiently, and the permeability of scaffolds increased to 11.93 ± 0.21 × 10-10 mm2 from 8.57 ± 0.021 × 10-10 mm2 after the 90 s FAE treatment. The treated Ti64 scaffolds after the 90 s FAE treatment exhibited optimized osseointegration effects in vitro and in vivo. In conclusion, the FAE method was an efficient way to eliminate unmelted Ti64 particles and obtain ideal surface topography, mechanical properties, and permeability to promote osseointegration in additively manufactured Ti64 scaffolds.

Abstract
Bone tissue engineering has witnessed a historical shift from three perspectives. From a biomaterial perspective, materials have now become smarter and dynamic; from a bioengineering perspective the bioprinting techniques have now advanced to 4D bioprinting; and from a clinical perspective scaffold bioactivity has progressed toward enhanced osteoinductive scaffolds driven by intricate biomechanical, biophysical, biochemical, and biological cues. Though all of these advancements are indicative of improvised scaffold engineering, a pivotal question regarding the critical role and need of designing and replicating the intricacies of trabecular microarchitecture for enhanced, clinically appreciable osteoangiogenicity needs to be answered. This review hence critically evaluates the rationale and the need of investing substantial effort into designing complex microarchitectures amidst the era of "smart biomaterials" and dynamic 4D bioprinting aimed toward enhancing clinically appreciable bioactivity. The article explores the concept of integrating intricate designs into a scaffold microarchitecture to bolster bioactivity and the practical challenges encountered in 3D bioprinting of complex designs and meticulously examines the pivotal role of biomaterials in scaffold bioactivity, proposing a comprehensive approach to bioprinting geared toward achieving clinical bioactivity and striking a judicious balance between design intricacy and functional outcomes in bone bioprinting.

Abstract
There has been increasing attention to produce porous scaffolds that mimic human bone properties for enhancement of tissue ingrowth, regeneration, and integration. Additive manufacturing (AM) technologies, i.e., three dimensional (3D) printing, have played a substantial role in engineering porous scaffolds for clinical applications owing to their high level of design and fabrication flexibility. To this end, this review article attempts to provide a detailed overview on the main design considerations of porous scaffolds such as permeability, adhesion, vascularisation, and interfacial features and their interplay to affect bone regeneration and osseointegration. Physiology of bone regeneration was initially explained that was followed by analysing the impacts of porosity, pore size, permeability and surface chemistry of porous scaffolds on bone regeneration in defects. Importantly, major 3D printing methods employed for fabrication of porous bone substitutes were also discussed. Advancements of MA technologies have allowed for the production of bone scaffolds with complex geometries in polymers, composites and metals with well-tailored architectural, mechanical, and mass transport features. In this way, a particular attention was devoted to reviewing 3D printed scaffolds with triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) geometries that mimic the hierarchical structure of human bones. In overall, this review enlighten a design pathway to produce patient-specific 3D-printed bone substitutions with high regeneration and osseointegration capacity for repairing large bone defects.

Abstract
Bone defect disease seriously endangers human health and affects beauty and function. In the past five years, the three dimension (3D) printed radially graded triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) porous scaffold has become a new solution for repairing bone defects. This review discusses 3D printing technologies and applications for TPMS scaffolds. To this end, the microstructural effects of 3D printed TPMS scaffolds on bone regeneration were reviewed and the structural characteristics of TPMS, which can promote bone regeneration, were introduced. Finally, the challenges and prospects of using TPMS scaffolds to treat bone defects were presented. This review is expected to stimulate the interest of bone tissue engineers in radially graded TPMS scaffolds and provide a reliable solution for the clinical treatment of personalised bone defects.
