Abstract
Three-dimensional (3D) microfabrication techniques play a crucial role across various research fields. These techniques enable the creation of functional 3D structures on the microscale, unlocking possibilities for diverse applications. However, conventional fabrication methods have limits in producing complex 3D structures, which require numerous fabrication steps that increase the costs. Graphene is an atomically thin material known for its deformability and impermeability to small gases and molecules, including reactive gases like XeF2. These features make graphene a potential candidate as an etch mask for 3D microfabrication. Here, we report the fabrication of various 3D microstructures using graphene etch masks directly grown and patterned on a Si substrate. The patterned graphene deforms and wraps the etched structures, allowing for the fabrication of complicated 3D microstructures, such as mushroom-like and step-like microstructures. As a practical demonstration of the graphene etch mask, we fabricate an omniphobic surface of reentrant 3D structures on a Si substrate. Our work provides a method for fabricating complex 3D microstructures using a graphene etch mask, contributing to advancements in etching and fabrication processes.

Abstract
Laser-plasma accelerators are compact linear accelerators based on the interaction of high-power lasers with plasma to form accelerating structures up to 1000 times smaller than standard radiofrequency cavities, and they come with an embedded X-ray source, namely betatron source, with unique properties: small source size and femtosecond pulse duration. A still unexplored possibility to exploit the betatron source comes from combining it with imaging methods able to encode multiple information like transmission and phase into a single-shot acquisition approach. In this work, we combine edge illumination-beam tracking (EI-BT) with a betatron X-ray source and present the demonstration of multimodal imaging (transmission, refraction, and scattering) with a compact light source down to the femtosecond timescale. The advantage of EI-BT is that it allows multimodal X-ray imaging technique, granting access to transmission, refraction and scattering signals from standard low-coherence laboratory X-ray sources in a single shot.

Abstract
The drive toward miniaturization of enzyme-based bioelectronics established a need for three-dimensional (3D) microstructured electrodes, which are difficult to implement using conventional manufacturing processes. Additive manufacturing coupled with electroless metal plating enables the production of 3D conductive microarchitectures with high surface area for potential applications in such devices. However, interfacial delamination between the metal layer and the polymer structure is a major reliability concern, which leads to device performance degradation and eventually device failure. This work demonstrates a method to produce a highly conductive and robust metal layer on a 3D printed polymer microstructure with strong adhesion by introducing an interfacial adhesion layer. Prior to 3D printing, multifunctional acrylate monomers with alkoxysilane (-Si-(OCH3)3) were synthesized via the thiol-Michael addition reaction between pentaerythritol tetraacrylate (PETA) and 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTMS) with a 1:1 stoichiometric ratio. Alkoxysilane functionality remains intact during photopolymerization in a projection micro-stereolithography (PμSLA) system and is utilized for the sol-gel reaction with MPTMS during postfunctionalization of the 3D printed microstructure to build an interfacial adhesion layer. This leads to the implementation of abundant thiol functional groups on the surface of the 3D printed microstructure, which can act as a strong binding site for gold during electroless plating to improve interfacial adhesion. The 3D conductive microelectrode prepared by this technique exhibited excellent conductivity of 2.2 × 107 S/m (53% of bulk gold) with strong adhesion between a gold layer and a polymer structure even after harsh sonication and an adhesion tape test. As a proof-of-concept, we examined the 3D gold diamond lattice microelectrode modified with glucose oxidase as a bioanode for a single enzymatic biofuel cell. The lattice-structured enzymatic electrode with high catalytic surface area was able to generate a current density of 2.5 μA/cm2 at 0.35 V, which is an about 10 times increase in current output compared to a cube-shaped microelectrode.

A Review on Stimuli-Actuated 3D Micro/Nanostructures for Tissue Engineering and the Potential of Laser-Direct Writing via Two-Photon Polymerization for Structure Fabrication. Abstract
In this review, we present the most recent and relevant research that has been done regarding the fabrication of 3D micro/nanostructures for tissue engineering applications. First, we make an overview of 3D micro/nanostructures that act as backbone constructs where the seeded cells can attach, proliferate and differentiate towards the formation of new tissue. Then, we describe the fabrication of 3D micro/nanostructures that are able to control the cellular processes leading to faster tissue regeneration, by actuation using topographical, mechanical, chemical, electric or magnetic stimuli. An in-depth analysis of the actuation of the 3D micro/nanostructures using each of the above-mentioned stimuli for controlling the behavior of the seeded cells is provided. For each type of stimulus, a particular recent application is presented and discussed, such as controlling the cell proliferation and avoiding the formation of a necrotic core (topographic stimulation), controlling the cell adhesion (nanostructuring), supporting the cell differentiation via nuclei deformation (mechanical stimulation), improving the osteogenesis (chemical and magnetic stimulation), controlled drug-delivery systems (electric stimulation) and fastening tissue formation (magnetic stimulation). The existing techniques used for the fabrication of such stimuli-actuated 3D micro/nanostructures, are briefly summarized. Special attention is dedicated to structures' fabrication using laser-assisted technologies. The performances of stimuli-actuated 3D micro/nanostructures fabricated by laser-direct writing via two-photon polymerization are particularly emphasized.

Abstract
Physical hydrogels prepared from natural biopolymers are the most popular components for bioinks. However, to improve the mechanical properties of the network, in particular its durability for long-lasting tissue engineering applications or its stiffness for bone/cartilage applications, covalent chemical hydrogels have to be considered. For that purpose, biorthogonal reactions are required to allow the inclusion of living cells within the bioink reservoir before the 3D printing procedure. Interestingly, such reactions also unlock the possibility to further multifunctionalize the network, adding bioactive moieties to tune the biological properties of the resulting printed biomaterial. Surprisingly, compared to the huge number of studies disclosing novel bioink compositions, no extensive efforts have been made by the scientific community to develop new chemical reactions meeting the requirements of both cell encapsulation, chemical orthogonality and versatile enough to be applied to a wide range of molecular components, including fragile biomolecules. That could be explained by the domination of acrylate photocrosslinking in the bioprinting field. On the other hand, proceeding chemoselectively and allowing the polymerization of any type of silylated molecules, the sol-gel inorganic polymerization was used as a crosslinking reaction to prepare hydrogels. Recent development of this strategy includes the optimization of biocompatible catalytic conditions and the silylation of highly attractive biomolecules such as amino acids, bioactive peptides, proteins and oligosaccharides. When one combines the simplicity and the versatility of the process, with the ease of functionalization of any type of relevant silylated molecules that can be combined in an infinite manner, it was obvious that a family of bioinks could emerge quickly. This review presents the sol-gel process in biocompatible conditions and the various classes of relevant silylated molecules that can be used as bioink components. The preparation of hydrogels and the kinetic considerations of the sol-gel chemistry which at least allowed cell encapsulation and extrusion-based bioprinting are discussed.

Abstract
3D bioprinting has been developed as an effective and powerful technique for the fabrication of living tissue constructs in a well-controlled manner. However, most existing 3D bioprinting strategies face substantial challenges in replicating delicate and intricate tissue-specific structural organizations using mechanically weak biomaterials such as hydrogels. Embedded bioprinting is an emerging bioprinting strategy that can directly fabricate complex structures derived from soft biomaterials within a supporting matrix, which shows great promise in printing large vascularized tissues and organs. Here, we provide a state-of-the-art review on the development of embedded bioprinting including extrusion-based and light-based processes to manufacture complex tissue constructs with biomimetic architectures. The working principles, bioinks, and supporting matrices of embedded printing processes are introduced. The effect of key processing parameters on the printing resolution, shape fidelity, and biological functions of the printed tissue constructs are discussed. Recent innovations in the processes and applications of embedded bioprinting are highlighted, such as light-based volumetric bioprinting and printing of functional vascularized organ constructs. Challenges and future perspectives with regard to translating embedded bioprinting into an effective strategy for the fabrication of functional biological constructs with biomimetic structural organizations are finally discussed. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: It is still challenging to replicate delicate and intricate tissue-specific structural organizations using mechanically-weak hydrogels for the fabrication of functional living tissue constructs. Embedded bioprinting is an emerging 3D printing strategy that enables to produce complex tissue structures directly inside a reservoir filled with supporting matrix, which largely widens the choice of bioprinting inks to ECM-like hydrogels. Here we aim to provide a comprehensive review on various embedded bioprinting techniques mainly including extrusion-based and light-based processes. Various bioinks, supporting matrices, key processing parameters as well as their effects on the structures and biological functions of resultant living tissue constructs are discussed. We expect that it can provide an important reference and generate new insights for the bioprinting of large vascularized tissues and organs with biological functions.

Abstract
Bolus is a kind of auxiliary device used in radiotherapy for the treatment of superficial lesions such as skin cancer. It is commonly used to increase skin dose and overcome the skin-sparing effect. Despite the availability of various commercial boluses, there is currently no bolus that can form full contact with irregular surface of patients' skin, and incomplete contact would result in air gaps. The resulting air gaps can reduce the surface radiation dose, leading to a discrepancy between the delivered dose and planned dose. To avoid this limitation, the customized bolus processed by three-dimensional (3D) printing holds tremendous potential for making radiotherapy more efficient than ever before. This review mainly summarized the recent development of polymers used for processing bolus, 3D printing technologies suitable for polymers, and customization of 3D printing bolus. An ideal material for customizing bolus should not only have the feature of 3D printability for customization, but also possess radiotherapy adjuvant performance as well as other multiple compound properties, including tissue equivalence, biocompatibility, antibacterial activity, and antiphlogosis.

Abstract
3D printing (also called "additive manufacturing" or "rapid prototyping") is able to translate computer-aided and designed virtual 3D models into 3D tangible constructs/objects through a layer-by-layer deposition approach. Since its introduction, 3D printing has aroused enormous interest among researchers and engineers to understand the fabrication process and composition-structure-property correlation of printed 3D objects and unleash its great potential for application in a variety of industrial sectors. Because of its unique technological advantages, 3D printing can definitely benefit the field of microrobotics and advance the design and development of functional microrobots in a customized manner. This review aims to present a generic overview of 3D printing for functional microrobots. The most applicable 3D printing techniques, with a focus on laser-based printing, are introduced for the 3D microfabrication of microrobots. 3D-printable materials for fabricating microrobots are reviewed in detail, including photopolymers, photo-crosslinkable hydrogels, and cell-laden hydrogels. The representative applications of 3D-printed microrobots with rational designs heretofore give evidence of how these printed microrobots are being exploited in the medical, environmental, and other relevant fields. A future outlook on the 3D printing of microrobots is also provided.

Abstract
Conductive polymers (CPs) have recently been applied in the development of scaffolds for tissue engineering applications in attempt to induce additional cues able to enhance tissue growth. Polyaniline (PANI) is one of the most widely studied CPs, but it requires to be blended with other polymers in order to be processed through conventional technologies. Here, we propose the fabrication of nanofibers based on a polycaprolactone (PCL)-PANI blend obtained using electrospinning technology. An extracellular matrix-like fibrous substrate was obtained showing a good stability in the physiological environment (37 °C in PBS solution up 7 days). However, since the high hydrophobicity of the PCL-PANI mats (133.5 ± 2.2°) could negatively affect the biological response, a treatment with atmospheric plasma was applied on the nanofibrous mats, obtaining a hydrophilic surface (67.1 ± 2°). In vitro tests were performed to confirm the viability and the physiological-like morphology of human foreskin fibroblast (HFF-1) cells cultured on the plasma treated PCL-PANI nanofibrous scaffolds.

Abstract
Controlling cell adhesion and cell differentiation is necessary to fabricate a tissue with arbitrary properties for tissue engineering applications. A substrate with a porous structure as a cell scaffold allows the diffusion of the cell culture medium through the scaffold. In this work, we show that the femtosecond laser fabricated micro through-holes in biodegradable polymer films, enhance myoblast adhesion, and accelerates proliferation and differentiation. ChR2-C2C12 and UT-C2C12 cells were seeded on the films with micro through-holes each fabricated by a single femtosecond laser pulse. Cell adhesion was enhanced on films with holes fabricated by laser irradiation. In addition, cell proliferation was accelerated on films with micro through-holes that penetrate the film, compared to on films with micro craters that do not penetrate the film. On films with arrays consisting of micro through-holes, cells aligned along the arrays and cell fusion was enhanced, indicating the acceleration of cell differentiation.

Abstract
Micro/nano structures have unique optical, electrical, magnetic, and thermal properties. Studies on the preparation of micro/nano structures are of considerable research value and broad development prospects. Several micro/nano structure preparation techniques have already been developed, such as photolithography, electron beam lithography, focused ion beam techniques, nanoimprint techniques. However, the available geometries directly implemented by those means are limited to the 2D mode. Laser machining, a new technology for micro/nano structural preparation, has received great attention in recent years for its wide application to almost all types of materials through a scalable, one-step method, and its unique 3D processing capabilities, high manufacturing resolution and high designability. In addition, micro/nano structures prepared by laser machining have a wide range of applications in photonics, Surface plasma resonance, optoelectronics, biochemical sensing, micro/nanofluidics, photofluidics, biomedical, and associated fields. In this paper, updated achievements of laser-assisted fabrication of micro/nano structures are reviewed and summarized. It focuses on the researchers' findings, and analyzes materials, morphology, possible applications and laser machining of micro/nano structures in detail. Seven kinds of materials are generalized, including metal, organics or polymers, semiconductors, glass, oxides, carbon materials, and piezoelectric materials. In the end, further prospects to the future of laser machining are proposed.

Abstract
The realization of biomimetic microenvironments for cell biology applications such as organ-on-chip, in vitro drug screening, and tissue engineering is one of the most fascinating research areas in the field of bioengineering. The continuous evolution of additive manufacturing techniques provides the tools to engineer these architectures at different scales. Moreover, it is now possible to tailor their biomechanical and topological properties while taking inspiration from the characteristics of the extracellular matrix, the three-dimensional scaffold in which cells proliferate, migrate, and differentiate. In such context, there is therefore a continuous quest for synthetic and nature-derived composite materials that must hold biocompatible, biodegradable, bioactive features and also be compatible with the envisioned fabrication strategy. The structure of the current review is intended to provide to both micro-engineers and cell biologists a comparative overview of the characteristics, advantages, and drawbacks of the major 3D printing techniques, the most promising biomaterials candidates, and the trade-offs that must be considered in order to replicate the properties of natural microenvironments.

Abstract
The purpose of this review is to assess the state-of-the-art fabrication methods, advances in genome editing, and the use of machine learning to shape the prospective growth in cardiac tissue engineering. Those interdisciplinary emerging innovations would move forward basic research in this field and their clinical applications. The long-entrenched challenges in this field could be addressed by novel 3-dimensional (3D) scaffold substrates for cardiomyocyte (CM) growth and maturation. Stem cell-based therapy through genome editing techniques can repair gene mutation, control better maturation of CMs or even reveal its molecular clock. Finally, machine learning and precision control for improvements of the construct fabrication process and optimization in tissue-specific clonal selections with an outlook of cardiac tissue engineering are also presented.

Abstract
Mimicking the properties of the extracellular matrix is crucial for developing in vitro models of the physiological microenvironment of living cells. Among other techniques, 3D direct laser writing (DLW) has emerged as a promising technology for realizing tailored 3D scaffolds for cell biology studies. Here, results based on DLW addressing basic biological issues, e.g., cell-force measurements and selective 3D cell spreading on functionalized structures are reviewed. Continuous future progress in DLW materials engineering and innovative approaches for scaffold fabrication will enable further applications of DLW in applied biomedical research and tissue engineering.

Abstract
Two-photon lithography is a laser writing technique that can produce 3D microstructures with resolutions below the diffraction limit. This review focuses on its applications to study mechanical properties of cells, an emerging field known as mechanobiology. We review 3D structural designs and materials in the context of new experimental designs, including estimating forces exerted by single cells, studying selective adhesion on substrates, and creating 3D networks of cells. We then focus on emerging applications, including structures for assessing cancer cell invasiveness, whose migration properties depend on the cell mechanical response to the environment, and 3D architectures and materials to study stem cell differentiation, as 3D structure shape and patterning play a key role in defining cell fates.

Abstract
Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) is a myeloproliferative disorder occurs in the pluripotent hematopoietic stem cell. Currently, first-generation tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) imatinib is the mainstay for the treatment of CML. Second generation TKI's like ponatinib, dasatinib, nilotinib, and bafetinib were treated against resistant CML. However, several CML patients develop resistance towards all existing inhibitors. Curcumin (Curcuma longa) a plant-derived natural compound is an effective bioactive component against various cancers including CML. Many studies have shown that curcumin induces time- and dose-dependent apoptosis in CML cells by regulating various downstream molecular regulators. Despite curcumin's selective cytotoxicity towards cancer cells, it has very poor bioavailability both in in-vitro and in-vivo conditions. In this present study, we have used femtosecond laser (fs-laser) pulses to ablate the cell membrane and standardized the conditions required for creating a cell membrane pores with less lethality. Following fs-laser pulse irradiation, K562 cells were incubated along with curcumin 30 μM for 0 h, 6 h,12 h and 24 h. Interestingly irradiated cells have shown higher sensitivity towards curcumin than non-irradiated cells. Immunoblotting studies showed higher induction levels of cleaved caspase 3 and 9 in irradiated population than non-irradiated. In summary, the results prove that irradiation by fs-laser pulses enhanced the bioavailability of curcumin and shows caspase-mediated cell death in irradiated CML cells than other populations.

Abstract
Peptide-based nanostructures are very promising for nanotechnological applications because of their excellent self-assembly properties, biological and chemical flexibility, and unique multifunctional performance. However, one of the limiting factors for the integration of peptide assemblies into functional devices is poor control of their alignment and other geometrical parameters required for device fabrication. In this work, we report a novel method for the controlled deposition of one of the representative self-assembled peptides-diphenylalanine (FF)-using a commercial inkjet printer. The initial FF solution, which has been shown to readily self-assemble into different structures such as nano- and microtubes and microrods, was modified to be used as an efficient ink for the printing of aligned FF-based structures. Furthermore, during the development of the suitable ink, we were able to produce a novel type of FF conformation with high piezoelectric response and excellent stability. By using this method, ribbonlike microcrystals based on FF could be formed and precisely patterned on different surfaces. Possible mechanisms of structure formation and piezoelectric effect in printed microribbons are discussed along with the possible applications.
