Abnormal N-Heterocyclic Carbene–Palladium Complexes for the Copolymerization of Ethylene and Polar Monomers

Ethylene/Polar Monomer Copolymerization by [N, P] Ti Complexes: Polar Copolymers with Ultrahigh-Molecular Weight

A series of novel titanium complexes (2a-2e) bearing [N, P] aniline-chlorodiphenylphosphine ligands (1a-1e) featuring CH3 and F substituents have been synthesized and characterized. Surprisingly, in the presence of polar additive, the complexes (2a-2e) all displayed high catalytic activities (up to 1.04 × 106 gPolymer (mol·Ti)-1·h-1 and produced copolymer with the ultrahigh molecular weight up to 1.37 × 106 g/mol. The catalytic activities are significantly enhanced by introducing electron-withdrawing group (F) into the aniline aromatic ring. Especially, the increase in activity based on different complexes followed the order of 2e > 2d > 2c > 2b > 2a. Simultaneously, density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been performed to probe the polymerization mechanism as well as the electronic and steric effects of various substituents on the catalyst backbone. DFT computation revealed that the polymerization behaviors could be adjusted by the electronic effect of ligand substituents; however, it has little to do with the steric hindrance of the substituents. Furthermore, theoretical calculation results keep well in accordance with experimental measurement results. The article provided an appealing design method that the employment of fluorine atom as electron-withdrawing to be studied is the promotive effect of transition-metal coordination polymerization.

Copolymerization of Ethylene with Functionalized 1,1-Disubstituted Olefins Using a Fluorenylamido-Ligated Titanium Catalyst

Considering the sustainability of material development, coordination polymerization catalysts effective for 1,1-disubstituted olefins are receiving a great deal of attention because they can introduce a variety of plant-derived comonomers, such as β-pinene and limonene, into polyolefins. However, due to their sterically encumbered property, incorporating these monomers is difficult. Herein, we succeeded in the copolymerization of ethylene with various hydroxy- or siloxy-substituted vinylidenes using a fluorenylamido-ligated titanium catalyst-MMAO system. This is the first example of ethylene/polar 1,1-disubstituted olefins' copolymerization using an early transition metal catalyst system. The polymerization proceeded at room temperature without pressurizing ethylene, and high-molecular-weight, functionalized polyethylene was obtained. The obtained copolymer showed a reduced water contact angle compared with that of the ethylene/isobutene copolymer, demonstrating the increment in hydrophilicity by hydroxy groups.

Recent Advances in the Copolymerization of Ethylene with Polar Comonomers by Nickel Catalysts

The less-expensive and earth-abundant nickel catalyst is highly promising in the copolymerization of ethylene with polar monomers and has thus attracted increasing attention in both industry and academia. Herein, we have summarized the recent advancements made in the state-of-the-art nickel catalysts with different types of ligands for ethylene copolymerization and how these modifications influence the catalyst performance, as well as new polymerization modulation strategies. With regard to α-diimine, salicylaldimine/ketoiminato, phosphino-phenolate, phosphine-sulfonate, bisphospnine monoxide, N-heterocyclic carbene and other unclassified chelates, the properties of each catalyst and fine modulation of key copolymerization parameters (activity, molecular weight, comonomer incorporation rate, etc.) are revealed in detail. Despite significant achievements, many opportunities and possibilities are yet to be fully addressed, and a brief outlook on the future development and long-standing challenges is provided.

Suppression of Chain Transfer at High Temperature in Catalytic Olefin Polymerization

Living polymerization by suppressing chain transfer is a very useful method for achieving precise molecular weight and structure control. However, the suppression of chain transfer at high temperatures is extremely challenging in any catalytic polymerization. This has been a severe limitation for catalytic olefin polymerization, which is one of the most important chemical reactions. Here, we report the unprecedented living polymerization of ethylene at 130 °C, with a narrow molecular weight distribution range of 1.04 to 1.08. This is a significant increase in the reaction temperature. Tailor-made α-diimine nickel catalysts that exhibit both the steric shielding and fluorine effects play an essential role in this breakthrough. These nickel catalysts are even active at 200 °C, and enable the formation of semi-crystalline, ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene at 150 °C. Mechanistic insights into the key chain transfer reaction are elucidated by density functional theory calculations.

Bi- and trimetallic complexes with macrocyclic xanthene-4,5-diNHC ligands

Three different types of bimetallic NHC-metal complexes were synthesized, whose NHC units are attached at the 4,5-positions of xanthene. The NHC units are in close proximity and are designed such that each carbene coordinates one ML unit, while the chelation of one metal by two NHC is not possible. Several xanthene-((NHC)ML)₂ complexes with ML = RhCl(cod), IrCl(cod), RhCl(CO)₂, IrCl(CO)₂, AuCl, AgCl, CuCl and Pd(allyl)Cl were synthesized and investigated.

Toward the Copolymerization of Propylene with Polar Comonomers

Polyolefins are produced in vast amounts and are found in so many consumer products that the two most commonly produced forms, polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP), fall into the rather sparse category of molecules that are likely to be known by people worldwide, regardless of their occupation. Although widespread, the further upgrading of their properties (mechanical, physical, aesthetic, etc.) through the formation of composites with other materials, such as polar polymers, fibers, or talc, is of huge interest to manufacturers. To improve the affinity of polyolefins toward these materials, the inclusion of polar functionalities into the polymer chain is essential. The incorporation of a functional group to trigger controlled polymer degradation is also an emerging area of interest. Currently practiced methods for the incorporation of polar functionalities, such as post-polymerization functionalization, are limited by the number of compatible polar monomers: for example, grafting maleic anhydride is currently the sole method for practical functionalization of PP. In contrast, the incorporation of fundamental polar comonomers into PE and PP chains via coordination insertion polymerization offers good control, making it a highly sought-after process. Early transition metal catalysts (which are commonly used for the production of PE and PP) display poor tolerance toward the functional groups within polar comonomers, limiting their use to less-practical derivatives. As late transition metal catalysts are less-oxophilic and thus more tolerant to polar functionalities, they are ideal candidates for these reactions. This Account focuses on the copolymerization of propylene with polar comonomers, which remains underdeveloped as compared to the corresponding reaction using ethylene. We begin with the challenges associated with the regio- and stereoselective insertion of propylene, which is a particular problem for late transition metal systems because of their propensity to undergo chain walking processes. To overcome this issue, we have investigated a range of metal/ligand combinations. We first discuss attempts with group 4 and 8 metal catalysts and their limitations as background, and then focus on the copolymerization of propylene with methyl acrylate (MA) using Pd/imidazolidine-quinolinolate (IzQO) and Pd/phosphine-sulfonate (PS) precatalysts. Each generated regioregular polymer, but while the system featuring an IzQO ligand did not display any stereocontrol, that using the chiral PS ligand did. A further difference was found in the insertion mode of MA: the Pd/IzQO system inserted in a 1,2 fashion, while in the Pd/PS system a 2,1 insertion was observed. We then move onto recent results from our lab using Pd/PS and Pd/bisphosphine monoxide (BPMO) precatalysts for the copolymerization of propylene with allyl comonomers. These P-stereogeneic precatalysts generated the highest isotacticity values reported to date using late transition metal catalysts. This section closes with our work using Earth-abundant nickel catalysts for the reaction, which would be especially desired for industrial applications: a Ni/phosphine phenolate (PO) precatalyst yielded regioregular polypropylene with the incorporation of some allyl monomers into the main polymer chain. The installation of a chiral menthyl substituent on the phosphine allowed for moderate stereoselectivity to be achieved, though the applicable polar monomers currently remain limited. The Account concludes with a discussion of the factors that affect the insertion mode of propylene and polar comonomers in copolymerization reactions, beginning with our recent computational study, and finishing with work from ourselves and others covering both comonomer and precatalyst steric and electronic profiles with reference to the observed regioselectivity.

Custom-made polar monomers utilized in nickel and palladium promoted olefin copolymerization

Synthesis of imidazo[1,5-a]pyridines via cyclocondensation of 2-(aminomethyl)pyridines with electrophilically activated nitroalkanes

Imidazo[1,5-a]pyridines were efficiently prepared via the cyclization of 2-picolylamines with nitroalkanes electrophilically activated in the presence of phosphorous acid in polyphosphoric acid (PPA) medium.

Pyridine-Chelated Imidazo[1,5-a]Pyridine N-Heterocyclic Carbene Nickel(II) Complexes for Acrylate Synthesis from Ethylene and CO2

Nickel(II) dichloride complexes with a pyridine-chelated imidazo[1,5-a]pyridin-3-ylidene py-ImPy ligand were developed as novel catalyst precursors for acrylate synthesis reaction from ethylene and carbon dioxide (CO2), a highly promising sustainable process in terms of carbon capture and utilization (CCU). Two types of ImPy salts were prepared as new C,N-bidentate ligand precursors; py-ImPy salts (3, 4a–4e) having a pyridine group at C(5) on ImPy and a N-picolyl-ImPy salt (10) having a picolyl group at N atom on ImPy. Nickel(II) complexes such as py-ImPyNi(II)Cl2 (7, 8a–8e) and N-picolyl-ImPyNi(II)Cl2 (12) were synthesized via transmetalation protocol from silver(I) complexes, py-ImPyAgCl (5, 6a–6e) and N-picolyl-ImPyAgCl (11). X-ray diffraction analysis of nickel(II) complexes (7, 8b, 12) showed a monomeric distorted tetrahedral geometry and a six-membered chelate ring structure. py-ImPy ligands formed a more planar six-membered chelate with the nickel center than did N-picolyl-ImPy ligand. py-ImPyNi(II)Cl2 complexes (8a–8e) with tert-butyl substituents exhibited noticeable catalytic activity in acrylate synthesis from ethylene and CO2 (up to 108% acrylate). Interestingly, the use of additional additives including monodentate phosphines increased catalytic activity up to 845% acrylate (TON 8).
