Kinetic Analysis of Domino Catalysis: A Case Study on Gold-Catalyzed Arylation

Straightforward Access to Isoindoles and 1,2-Dihydrophthalazines Enabled by a Gold-Catalyzed Three-Component Reaction

We describe herein a gold-catalyzed three-component reaction of o-alkynylbenzaldehydes, aryldiazonium salts, and trimethoxybenzene. This process enables the one-pot formation of valuable isoindoles and 1,2-dihydrophathalazines. The regioselectivity of the reaction is dictated by the nature of the aryldiazonium salt. Noticeably, the reaction is performed at room temperature under mild conditions and tolerates a variety of functional groups on both the o-alkynylbenzaldehyde and the aryldiazonium salt. Experimental mechanistic studies suggest that it is catalyzed by arylAu(III) species.

Mechanism and kinetic model of microalgal enzymatic hydrolysis for prospective bioethanol conversion

Tetraselmis chuii is a potential microalgae that is in consideration for producing bioethanol owing to its large content of carbohydrates. The glucose production from T. chuii through an enzymatic process with cellulase and xylanase (pretreatment process) and α-amylase and glucoamylase (saccharification process) was studied. The mechanism of the enzymatic process was developed and the kinetic models were then evaluated. For the pretreatment process, enzymes with 30% concentration reacted at 30 °C for 40 min resulted in 35.9% glucose yield. For the saccharification process, the highest glucose yield of 90.03% was obtained using simultaneous α-amylase (0.0006%) and glucoamylase (0.01%) enzymes at 55 °C and for 40 min. The kinetic models fitted well with the experimental data. The model also revealed that the saccharification process performed better than the pretreatment process with a higher kinetic constant and lower activation energy. The proposed kinetic model plays an important role in implementing processes at a larger scale.

A Hemilabile NHC-Gold Complex and its Application to the Redox Neutral 1,2-Oxyarylation of Feedstock Alkenes

We describe a AuI complex of a hemi-labile (C^N) N-heterocyclic carbene ligand that is able to mediate oxidative addition of aryl iodides. Detailed computational and experimental investigations have been undertaken to verify and rationalize the oxidative addition process. Application of this initiation mode has resulted in the first examples of "exogenous oxidant-free" AuI /AuIII catalyzed 1,2-oxyarylations of ethylene and propylene. These demanding yet powerful processes establish these commodity chemicals as nucleophilic-electrophilic building blocks in catalytic reaction design.

In Situ Studies of Arylboronic Acids/Esters and R3SiCF3 Reagents: Kinetics, Speciation, and Dysfunction at the Carbanion-Ate Interface

Reagent instability reduces the efficiency of chemical processes, and while much effort is devoted to reaction optimization, less attention is paid to the mechanistic causes of reagent decomposition. Indeed, the response is often to simply use an excess of the reagent. Two reaction classes with ubiquitous examples of this are the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling of boronic acids/esters and the transfer of CF₃ or CF₂ from the Ruppert-Prakash reagent, TMSCF₃. This Account describes some of the overarching features of our mechanistic investigations into their decomposition. In the first section we summarize how specific examples of (hetero)arylboronic acids can decompose via aqueous protodeboronation processes: Ar-B(OH)₂ + H₂O → ArH + B(OH)₃. Key to the analysis was the development of a kinetic model in which pH controls boron speciation and heterocycle protonation states. This method revealed six different protodeboronation pathways, including self-catalysis when the pH is close to the pK_a of the boronic acid, and protodeboronation via a transient aryl anionoid pathway for highly electron-deficient arenes. The degree of "protection" of boronic acids by diol-esterification is shown to be very dependent on the diol identity, with six-membered ring esters resulting in faster protodeboronation than the parent boronic acid. In the second section of the Account we describe ¹⁹F NMR spectroscopic analysis of the kinetics of the reaction of TMSCF₃ with ketones, fluoroarenes, and alkenes. Processes initiated by substoichiometric "TBAT" ([Ph₃SiF₂][Bu₄N]) involve anionic chain reactions in which low concentrations of [CF₃]^- are rapidly and reversibly liberated from a siliconate reservoir, [TMS(CF₃)₂][Bu₄N]. Increased TMSCF₃ concentrations reduce the [CF₃]^- concentration and thus inhibit the rates of CF₃ transfer. Computation and kinetics reveal that the TMSCF₃ intermolecularly abstracts fluoride from [CF₃]^- to generate the CF₂, in what would otherwise be an endergonic α-fluoride elimination. Starting from [CF₃]^- and CF₂, a cascade involving perfluoroalkene homologation results in the generation of a hindered perfluorocarbanion, [C₁₁F₂₃]^-, and inhibition. The generation of CF₂ from TMSCF₃ is much more efficiently mediated by NaI, and in contrast to TBAT, the process undergoes autoacceleration. The process involves NaI-mediated α-fluoride elimination from [CF₃][Na] to generate CF₂ and a [NaI·NaF] chain carrier. Chain-branching, by [(CF₂)₃I][Na] generated in situ (CF₂ + TFE + NaI), causes autoacceleration. Alkenes that efficiently capture CF₂ attenuate the chain-branching, suppress autoacceleration, and lead to less rapid difluorocyclopropanation. The Account also highlights how a collaborative approach to experiment and computation enables mechanistic insight for control of processes.

A Systematic Study of the Effects of Complex Structure on Aryl Iodide Oxidative Addition at Bipyridyl-Ligated Gold(I) Centers

A combined theoretical and experimental approach has been used to study the unusual mechanism of oxidative addition of aryl iodides to [bipyAu(C2 H4 )]+ complexes. The modular nature of this system allowed a systematic assessment of the effects of complex structure. Computational comparisons between cationic gold and the isolobal (neutral) Pd0 and Pt0 complexes revealed similar mechanistic features, but with oxidative addition being significantly favored for the group 10 metals. Further differences between Au and Pd were seen in experimental studies: studying reaction rates as a function of electronic and steric properties showed that ligands bearing more electron-poor functionality increase the rate of oxidative addition; in a complementary way, electron-rich aryl iodides give faster rates. This divergence in mechanism compared to Pd suggests that Ar-X oxidative addition with Au can underpin a broad range of new or complementary transformations.

Requiem for the Rate-Determining Step in Complex Heterogeneous Catalytic Reactions?

The concept of the rate determining step, i.e., the step having the strongest influence on the reaction rate or even being the only one present in the rate equation, is often used in heterogeneous catalytic reactions. The utilization of this concept mainly stems from a need to reduce complexity in deriving explicit rate equations or searching for a better catalyst based on the theoretical insight. When the aim is to derive a rate equation with eventual kinetic modelling for single-route mechanisms with linear sequences, the analytical rate expressions can be obtained based on the theory of complex reactions. For such mechanisms, a single rate limiting step might not be present at all and the common practice of introducing such steps is due mainly to the convenience of using simpler expressions. For mechanisms with a combination of linear and nonlinear steps or those just comprising non-linear steps, the reaction rates are influenced by several steps depending on reaction conditions, thus a reduction in complexity to a single rate limiting step can lead to misinterpretations. More widespread utilization of a microkinetic approach when the reaction rate constants can be computed with reasonable accuracy based on the theoretical insight, and availability of software for kinetic modelling, when a system of differential equations for reactants and products will be solved together with differential equations for catalytic species and the algebraic conservation equation for the latter, will eventually make the concept of the rate limiting step obsolete.
