Excited Carrier Dynamics in a Dye-Sensitized Niobate Nanosheet Photocatalyst for Visible-Light Hydrogen Evolution

Atomic-Level Regulated 2D ReSe2 : A Universal Platform Boostin Photocatalysis

Solar hydrogen (H₂ ) generation via photocatalytic water splitting is practically promising, environmentally benign, and sustainably carbon neutral. It is important therefore to understand how to controllably engineer photocatalysts at the atomic level. In this work, atomic-level engineering of defected ReSe₂ nanosheets (NSs) is reported to significantly boost photocatalytic H₂ evolution on various semiconductor photocatalysts including TiO₂ , CdS, ZnIn₂ S₄ , and C₃ N₄ . Advanced characterizations, such as atomic-resolution aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (AC-STEM), synchrotron-based X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES), in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transient-state surface photovoltage (SPV) spectroscopy, and transient-state photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, together with theoretical computations confirm that the strongly coupled ReSe₂ /TiO₂ interface and substantial atomic-level active sites of defected ReSe₂ NSs result in the significantly raised activity of ReSe₂ /TiO₂ . This work not only for the first time realizes the atomic-level engineering of ReSe₂ NSs as a versatile platform to significantly raise the activities on different photocatalysts, but, more importantly, underscores the immense importance of atomic-level synthesis and exploration on 2D materials for energy conversion and storage.

Construction of an S-Scheme Ag2MoO4/ZnFe2O4 Nanofiber Heterojunction for Enhanced Photoelectrocatalytic Activity under Visible Light Irradiation

The removal of organic dyes and pathogenic bacteria from contaminated water remains a significant challenge. In the present study, S-type heterojunction Ag₂MoO₄/ZnFe₂O₄ (AMO/ZFO) composite nanofibers were synthesized by electrospinning and co-precipitation and fabricated into photoanodes. It is found that the constructed S-type heterojunction of AMO/ZFO composites effectively inhibits the recombination of photogenerated carriers, in addition to the benefits of more exposed active sites and a greater specific surface area. When several properties are improved, AMO/ZFO composites exhibit excellent photoelectrocatalytic performance. The results demonstrate that under visible light irradiation, the photoelectrocatalytic degradation rate of AMO/ZFO-3 to methylene blue reached 76.2% within 50 min, and the killing rate of Salmonella was 83.6% within 80 min. The enhanced photoelectrocatalytic activity was due to the synergy of both electrochemical and photocatalytic effects. More importantly, after four testing cycles, AMO/ZFO-3 still has a better ability to kill pathogenic bacteria and degrade organic dyes due to its high stability. This work provides a feasible method for oxidizing organic dyes and pathogenic bacteria.

Complexed Semiconductor Cores Activate Hexaniobate Ligands as Nucleophilic Sites for Solar‐Light Reduction of CO 2 by Water

Although pure and functionalized solid-state polyniobates such as layered perovskites and niobate nanosheets are photocatalysts for renewable-energy processes, analogous reactions by molecular polyoxoniobate cluster-anions are nearly absent from the literature. We now report that under simulated solar light, hexaniobate cluster-anion encapsulated 30-Ni^II -ion "fragments" of surface-protonated cubic-phase-like NiO cores activate the hexaniobate ligands towards CO₂ reduction by water. Photoexcitation of the NiO cores promotes charge-transfer reduction of Nb^V to Nb^IV , increasing electron density at bridging oxo atoms of Nb-μ-O-Nb linkages that bind and convert CO₂ to CO. Photogenerated NiO "holes" simultaneously oxidize water to dioxygen. The findings point to molecular complexation of suitable semiconductor "fragments" as a general method for utilizing electron-dense polyoxoniobate anions as nucleophilic photocatalysts for solar-light driven activation and reduction of small molecules.

Surface-modified, dye-sensitized niobate nanosheets enabling an efficient solar-driven Z-scheme for overall water splitting

While dye-sensitized metal oxides are good candidates as H₂ evolution photocatalysts for solar-driven Z-scheme water splitting, their solar-to-hydrogen (STH) energy conversion efficiencies remain low because of uncontrolled charge recombination reactions. Here, we show that modification of Ru dye-sensitized, Pt-intercalated HCa₂Nb₃O₁₀ nanosheets (Ru/Pt/HCa₂Nb₃O₁₀) with both amorphous Al₂O₃ and poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS) improves the STH efficiency of Z-scheme overall water splitting by a factor of ~100, when the nanosheets are used in combination with a WO₃-based O₂ evolution photocatalyst and an I₃^-/I^- redox mediator, relative to an analogous system that uses unmodified Ru/Pt/HCa₂Nb₃O₁₀. By using the optimized photocatalyst, PSS/Ru/Al₂O₃/Pt/HCa₂Nb₃O₁₀, a maximum STH of 0.12% and an apparent quantum yield of 4.1% at 420 nm were obtained, by far the highest among dye-sensitized water splitting systems and comparable to conventional semiconductor-based suspended particulate photocatalyst systems.
