Abstract
Ammonia (NH3) is closely related to the fields of food and energy that humans depend on. The exploitation of advanced catalysts for NH3 synthesis has been a research hotspot for more than one hundred years. Previous studies have shown that the Ru B5 sites (step sites on the Ru (0001) surface uniquely arranged with five Ru atoms) and Fe C7 sites (iron atoms with seven nearest neighbors) over nanoparticle catalysts are highly reactive for N2-to-NH3 conversion. In recent years, single-atom and cluster catalysts, where the B5 sites and C7 sites are absent, have emerged as promising catalysts for efficient NH3 synthesis. In this review, we focus on the recent advances in single-atom and cluster catalysts, including single-atom catalysts (SACs), single-cluster catalysts (SCCs), and bimetallic-cluster catalysts (BCCs), for thermocatalytic NH3 synthesis at mild conditions. In addition, we discussed and summarized the unique structural properties and reaction performance as well as reaction mechanisms over single-atom and cluster catalysts in comparison with traditional nanoparticle catalysts. Finally, the challenges and prospects in the rational design of efficient single-atom and cluster catalysts for NH3 synthesis were provided.

Abstract
Promoters are indispensable components of Ru-based catalysts to promote N2 activation in ammonia (NH3) synthesis. The rational addition and regulation of promoters play a critical role in affecting the NH3 synthesis rate. In this work, we report a simple method by altering the loading sequence of Ba and Ru species to modulate the Ru-promoter interface, thus significantly boosting the NH3 synthesis rate. The Ba-Ru/GC BM catalyst via the prior loading of Ba rather than Ru over graphitic carbon (GC) exhibits a high NH3 synthesis rate of 18.7 mmol gcat-1 h-1 at 400 °C and 1 MPa, which is 2.5 times that of the Ru-Ba/GC BM catalyst via the conventional prior loading of Ru rather than Ba on GC. Our studies reveal that the prior loading of Ba benefits the high dispersion of the basic Ba promoter over an electron-withdrawing GC support, and then Ba species serve as structural promoters to stabilize Ru with small particle sizes, which exposes more active sites for N2 activation. Additionally, the intimate Ba and Ru interface enables facile electron donation from Ba to Ru sites, thus accelerating N2 dissociation to realize efficient NH3 synthesis. This work provides a simple approach to modulating the Ru-promoter interface and maximizing promoter utilization to enhance NH3 synthesis performance.

Abstract
Ruthenium (Ru) is the most widely used metal as an electrocatalyst for nitrogen (N2 ) reduction reaction (NRR) because of the relatively high N2 adsorption strength for successive reaction. Recently, it has been well reported that the homogeneous Ru-based metal alloys such as RuRh, RuPt, and RuCo significantly enhance the selectivity and formation rate of ammonia (NH3 ). However, the metal combinations for NRR have been limited to several miscible combinations of metals with Ru, although various immiscible combinations have immense potential to show high NRR performance. In this study, an immiscible combination of Ru and copper (Cu) is first utilized, and homogeneous alloy nanoparticles (RuCu NPs) are fabricated by the carbothermal shock method. The RuCu homogeneous NP alloys on cellulose/carbon nanotube sponge exhibit the highest selectivity and NH3 formation rate of ≈31% and -73 μmol h-1 cm-2 , respectively. These are the highest values of the selectivity and NH3 formation rates among existing Ru-based alloy metal combinations.

Abstract
5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) can be oxidized to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) for the production of biorenewable plastics to replace fossil resourced polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Development of a highly efficient electrocatalyst using renewable electricity as energy input is highly desired. In this work, Ru cluster-embedded Ni(OH)2 nanosheets [Ru/Ni(OH)2 ] were synthesized and exploited as electrochemical catalysts for the conversion of HMF to FDCA. Ru/Ni(OH)2 exhibited significantly improved current density (40 mA cm-2 at 1.41 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode) of over 7.7 times in comparison with Ni(OH)2 , and nearly 100 % conversion degree for HMF and 98.5 % selectivity towards FDCA were obtained. Operando Raman experiments revealed the catalysis was facilitated by the interconversion between Ni3+ and Ni2+ . Density functional theory calculations further revealed the effect of Ru clusters of Ni(OH)2 , thereby promoting HMF adsorption capacity on Ni sites to boost HMF oxidation activity. This work provides a novel strategy using Ru clusters to modify earth abundant Ni based catalyst for HMF oxidation to obtain high-value biomass-derived products.

Abstract
Deciphering the precise physical mechanism of interaction between an adsorbed species and a reactive site in heterogeneous catalysis is crucial for predictive design of highly efficient catalysts. Here, using first-principles calculations we identify that the two-dimensional ferromagnetic metal organic framework of Mn2C18H12 can serve as a highly efficient single-atom catalyst for spin-triplet O2 activation and CO oxidation. The underlying mechanism is via "concerted charge-spin catalysis", involving a delicate synergetic process of charge transfer, provided by the hosting Mn atom, and spin selection, preserved through active participation of its nearest neighboring Mn atoms for the crucial step of O2 activation. The synergetic mechanism is further found to be broadly applicable in O2 adsorption on magnetic X2C18H12 (X = Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni) with a well-defined linear scaling dependence between the chemical activity and spin excitation energy. The present findings provide new insights into chemical reactions wherein spin selection plays a vital role.
