Liquid Metal Shell as an Effective Iron Oxide Modifier for Redox-Based Hydrogen Production at Intermediate Temperatures

Extent of As(III) versus As(V) adsorption on iron (oxyhydr) oxides depends on the presence of vacancy cluster-like micropore sites: Insights into a seesaw effect

Iron (oxyhydr)oxides are ubiquitous in terrestrial environments and play a crucial role in controling the fate of arsenic in sediments and groundwater. Although there is evidence that different iron (oxyhydr)oxides have different affinities towards As(III) and As(V), it is still unclear why As(V) adsorption on some iron (oxyhydr)oxides is larger than As(III) adsorption, while it is opposite for other ones. In this study, six typical iron (oxyhydr)oxides are selected to evaluate their adsorption capacities for As(III) and As(V). The characteristics of these iron minerals such as morphology, arsenic adsorption species, and pore size distribution are carefully examined using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), positron annihilation lifetime (PAL) spectroscopy, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). We confirm a seesaw effect occurred in different iron minerals for As(III) and As(V) immobilization, i.e., at pH 6.0, adsorption of As(V) on hematite (0.73 μmol m-2) and magnetite (0.33 μmol m-2) is higher than for As(III) (0.61 μmol m-2 and 0.27 μmol m-2, respectively), for goethite and lepidocrocite it is almost equal, while As(III) sorption on ferrihydrite (5.77 μmol m-2) and schwertmannite (28.41 μmol m-2) showed higher sorption than As(V) (1.53 μmol m-2 and 12.99 μmol m-2, respectively). PAL analysis demonstrates that ferrihydrite and schwertmannite have a large concentration of vacancy cluster-like micropores, significantly more than goethite and lepidocrocite, followed by hematite and magnetite. The difference of adsorption of As(III) and As(V) to different iron (oxyhydr)oxides is due to differences in the abundance of vacancy cluster-like micropore sites, which are conducive for smaller size As(III) immobilization but not for larger size of As(V). The findings of this study provide novel insights into a seesaw effect for As(III) and As(V) immobilization on naturally occurring iron mineral.

Recent progress in liquid metal printing and its applications

This paper focuses on the latest research printing technology and broad application for flexible liquid metal (LM) materials. Through the newest template printing method, centrifugal force assisted method, pen lithography technology, and laser method, the precision of liquid metal printing on the devices was improved to 10 nm. The development of novel liquid metal inks, such as PVA-LM ink and ethanol/PDMS/LM double emulsion ink, have further enhanced the recovery, rapid printing, high conductivity, and strain resistance. At the same time, liquid metals also show promise in the application of biochemical sensors, photocatalysts, composite materials, driving machines, and electrode materials. Liquid metals have been applied to biomedical, pressure/gas, and electrochemical sensors. The sensitivity, biostability, and electrochemical performance of these LM sensors were improved rapidly. They could continue to be used in healthy respiratory, heartbeat monitoring, and dopamine detection. Meanwhile, the applications of liquid metal droplets in catalytic-assisted MoS2 deposition, catalytic growth of two-dimensional (2D) lamellar, catalytic free radical polymerization, catalytic hydrogen absorption/dehydrogenation, photo/electrocatalysis, and other fields were also summarized. Through improving liquid metal composites, magnetic, thermal, electrical, and tensile enhancement alloys, and shape memory alloys with excellent properties could also be prepared. Finally, the applications of liquid metal in micro-motors, intelligent robot feet, nanorobots, self-actuation, and electrode materials were also summarized. This paper comprehensively summarizes the practical application of liquid metals in different fields, which helps understand LMs development trends, and lays a foundation for subsequent research.

Ru-promoted perovskites as effective redox catalysts for CO2 splitting and methane partial oxidation in a cyclic redox scheme

The current study reports A_xA'_1-xB_yB'_1-yO_3-δ perovskite redox catalysts (RCs) for CO₂-splitting and methane partial oxidation (POx) in a cyclic redox scheme. Strontium (Sr) and iron (Fe) were chosen as A and B site elements with A' being lanthanum (La), samarium (Sm) or yttrium (Y), and B' being manganese (Mn) or titanium (Ti) to tailor their equilibrium oxygen partial pressures (P_O2s) for CO₂-splitting and methane partial oxidation. DFT calculations were performed for predictive optimization of the oxide materials whereas experimental investigation confirmed the DFT-predicted redox performance. The redox kinetics of the RCs improved significantly by 1 wt% ruthenium (Ru) impregnation without affecting their redox thermodynamics. Ru-impregnated LaFe_0.375Mn_0.625O₃ (A = 0, A' = La, B = Fe, and B' = Mn) was the most promising RC in terms of its superior redox performance (CH₄/CO₂ conversion >90% and CO selectivity ∼95%) at 800 °C. Long-term redox testing over Ru-impregnated LaFe_0.375Mn_0.625O₃ indicated a stable performance during the first 30 cycles followed by an ∼25% decrease in the activity during the last 70 cycles. Air treatment was effective to reactivate the redox catalyst. Detailed characterizations revealed the underlying mechanism of the redox catalyst deactivation and reactivation. This study not only validated a DFT-guided mixed oxide design strategy for CO₂ utilization but also provides potentially effective approaches to enhance redox kinetics and long-term redox catalyst performance.

Supported Cu/W/Mo/Ni—Liquid Metal Catalyst with Core-Shell Structure for Photocatalytic Degradation

Room-temperature liquid metal is a very ideal material for the design of catalytic materials. At low temperatures, the liquid metal enters the liquid state. It provides an opportunity to utilize the liquid phase in the catalysis, which is far superior to the traditional solid-phase catalyst. Aiming at the low performance and narrow application scope of the existing single-phase liquid metal catalyst, this paper proposed a type of liquid metal/metal oxide core-shell composite multi-metal catalyst. The Ga2O3 core-shell heterostructure was formed by chemical modification of liquid metals with different nano metals Cu/W/Mo/Ni, and it was applied to photocatalytic degrading organic contaminated raw liquor. The effects of different metal species on the rate of catalytic degradation were explored. The selectivity and stability of the LM/MO core-shell composite catalytic material were clarified, and it was found that the Ni-LM catalyst could degrade methylene blue and Congo red by 92% and 79%, respectively. The catalytic mechanism and charge transfer mechanism were revealed by combining the optical band gap value. Finally, we provided a theoretical basis for the further development of liquid metal photocatalytic materials in the field of new energy environments.
