Coupled Effects of Temperature, Pressure, and pH on Water Oxidation Thermodynamics and Kinetics

Bifunctional Catalysts for CO2 Reduction and O2 Evolution: A Pivotal for Aqueous Rechargeable Zn-CO2 Batteries

The quest for the advancement of green energy storage technologies and reduction of carbon footprint is determinedly rising toward carbon neutrality. Aqueous rechargeable Zn-CO2 batteries (ARZCBs) hold the great potential to encounter both the targets simultaneously, i.e., green energy storage and CO2 conversion to value-added chemicals/fuels. The major descriptor of ARZCBs efficiency is allied with the reactions occurring at cathode during discharging (CO2 reduction) and charging (O2 evolution) which own different fundamental mechanisms and hence mandate the employment of two different catalysts. This presents an overall complex and expensive battery system which requires a concrete solution, while the development and application of a bifunctional cathode catalyst toward both reactions could reduce the complexity and cost and thus can be a pivotal for ARZCBs. However, despite the increasing research interest and ongoing research, a systematic evaluation of bifunctional catalysts is rarely reported. In this review, the need of bifunctional cathode catalysts for ARZCBs and associated challenges with strategies have been critically assessed. A detailed progress examination and understanding toward designing of bifunctional catalyst for ARZCBs have been provided. This review will enlighten the future research approaching boosted performance of ARZCBs through the development of efficient bifunctional cathode catalysts.

Strongly facet-dependent activity of iron-doped β-nickel oxyhydroxide for the oxygen evolution reaction

Iron (Fe)-doped β-nickel oxyhydroxide (β-NiOOH) is a highly active, noble-metal-free electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), with the latter being the bottleneck in electrochemical water splitting for sustainable hydrogen production. The mechanisms underlying how the Fe dopant modulates this host material's water electro-oxidation activity are still not entirely clear. Here, we combine hybrid density functional theory (DFT) and Hubbard-corrected DFT to investigate the OER activity of the most thermodynamically favorable (and therefore, expected to be the majority) crystallographic facets of β-NiOOH, namely (0001) and (101̄0). By considering active sites involving both oxidation and reduction of the transition-metal active center during the redox cycle on these two different facets, we show that six-fold-lattice-coordinated Fe in β-NiOOH is redox inactive towards both oxidation and reduction while five-fold-lattice-coordinated Fe in β-NiOOH does exhibit redox activity. However, the determined redox activity of Fe (or lack of it) is not indicative of good (or bad) performance as a dopant on these two facets. Three of the four active sites investigated (oxo and hydroxo sites on (0001) and a hydrated site on (101̄0)) exhibit only a marginal (<0.1 V) decrease or increase in the thermodynamic overpotential upon doping with Fe. Only one of the redox-active sites investigated, the hydroxo site on (101̄0), exhibits a large attenuation in the thermodynamic overpotential upon doping (to ∼0.52 V from 0.86 V), although the doped overpotential is larger than that observed experimentally for Fe-doped NiOOH. Thus, although pure β-NiOOH facets containing four-, five-, or six-fold lattice-coordinated Ni sites have roughly equal OER activities, yielding similar OER onset potentials (shown in A. Govind Rajan, J. M. P. Martirez and E. A. Carter, J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2020, 142, 3600-3612), only those facets containing four-fold lattice-coordinated Fe (e.g., as shown in J. M. P. Martirez and E. A. Carter, J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2019, 141, 693-705) would be active under analogous conditions for the Fe-doped material. It follows that, while undoped β-NiOOH demonstrates a roughly facet-independent oxygen evolution activity, the activity of Fe-doped β-NiOOH strongly depends on the crystallographic facet. Our study further motivates the investigation of strategies for the selective growth of facets with low iron coordination number to enhance the water splitting activity of Fe-doped β-NiOOH.

Crystalline-Dependent Discharge Process of Locally Enhanced Electrooxidation Activity on Ni2P

The state-of-the-art transition-based electrocatalysts in alkaline media generally suffer from unavoidable surface reconstruction during oxygen evolution reaction measurements, leading to the collapse and loss of the crystalline matrix. Low potential discharge offers a gentle way for surface reconstruction and thus realizes the manipulation of the real active site. Nevertheless, the absence of a fundamental understanding focus on this discharge region renders the functional phase, either the crystalline or amorphous matrix, for the controllable reconstruction still undecidable. Herein, we report a scenario to employ different crystalline matrices as electrocatalysts for discharge region reconstruction. The representative low crystalline Ni₂P (LC-Ni₂P) possesses a relatively weak surface structure compared with highly crystalline or amorphous Ni₂P (HC-Ni₂P or A-Ni₂P), which contributes abundant oxygen vacancies after the discharge process. The fast discharge behavior of LC-Ni₂P leads to the uniform distribution of these vacancies and thus endows the inner interface with reactant activating functionality. A high increase in current density of 36.7% is achieved at 2.32 V (vs RHE) for the LC-Ni₂P electrode. The understanding of the discharge behavior in this study, on different crystalline matrices, presents insights into the establishment of controllable surface reconstruction for an effective oxygen evolution reaction.

Theoretical Modeling of Electrochemical Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer

Proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) plays an essential role in a wide range of electrocatalytic processes. A vast array of theoretical and computational methods have been developed to study electrochemical PCET. These methods can be used to calculate redox potentials and pK_a values for molecular electrocatalysts, proton-coupled redox potentials and bond dissociation free energies for PCET at metal and semiconductor interfaces, and reorganization energies associated with electrochemical PCET. Periodic density functional theory can also be used to compute PCET activation energies and perform molecular dynamics simulations of electrochemical interfaces. Various approaches for maintaining a constant electrode potential in electronic structure calculations and modeling complex interactions in the electric double layer (EDL) have been developed. Theoretical formulations for both homogeneous and heterogeneous electrochemical PCET spanning the adiabatic, nonadiabatic, and solvent-controlled regimes have been developed and provide analytical expressions for the rate constants and current densities as functions of applied potential. The quantum mechanical treatment of the proton and inclusion of excited vibronic states have been shown to be critical for describing experimental data, such as Tafel slopes and potential-dependent kinetic isotope effects. The calculated rate constants can be used as input to microkinetic models and voltammogram simulations to elucidate complex electrocatalytic processes.
