Titanium Silicalite-1 Nanosheet-Supported Platinum for Non-oxidative Ethane Dehydrogenation

Ultrafine Pt Nanoparticles on Defective Tungsten Oxide for Photocatalytic Ethylene Synthesis

The selective conversion of ethane (C2H6) to ethylene (C2H4) under mild conditions is highly wanted, yet very challenging. Herein, it is demonstrated that a Pt/WO3-x catalyst, constructed by supporting ultrafine Pt nanoparticles on the surface of oxygen-deficient tungsten oxide (WO3-x) nanoplates, is efficient and reusable for photocatalytic C2H6 dehydrogenation to produce C2H4 with high selectivity. Specifically, under pure light irradiation, the optimized Pt/WO3-x photocatalyst exhibits C2H4 and H2 yield rates of 291.8 and 373.4 µmol g-1 h-1, respectively, coupled with a small formation of CO (85.2 µmol g-1 h-1) and CH4 (19.0 µmol g-1 h-1), corresponding to a high C2H4 selectivity of 84.9%. Experimental and theoretical studies reveal that the vacancy-rich WO3-x catalyst enables broad optical harvesting to generate charge carriers by light for working the redox reactions. Meanwhile, the Pt cocatalyst reinforces adsorption of C2H6, desorption of key reaction species, and separation and migration of light-induced charges to promote the dehydrogenation reaction with high productivity and selectivity. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy and density functional theory calculation expose the key intermediates formed on the Pt/WO3-x catalyst during the reaction, which permits the construction of the possible C2H6 dehydrogenation mechanism.

Fabrication of a ZIF-on-lamella-zeolite architecture as a highly efficient catalyst for aldol condensation

Designing composite catalysts that harness the strengths of individual components while mitigating their limitations is a fascinating yet challenging task in catalyst engineering. In this study, we aimed to enhance the catalytic performance by anchoring ZIF-67 nanoparticles of precise sizes onto lamella Si-MWW zeolite surfaces through a stepwise regrowth process. Co ions were initially grafted onto the zeolite surface using ultrasonication, followed by a seed-assisted secondary growth method. Si-MWW proved to be the ideal zeolite support due to its thin layered structure, large external surface area and substantial lateral dimensions. The abundant Si-OH groups on its surface played a crucial role in securely binding Co ions, limiting size growth and preventing undesirable ZIF-67 aggregation. The resulting ZIF-67/MWW composite with finely dispersed nano-scale ZIF-67 particles exhibited a remarkable catalytic performance and stability in the aldol condensation reactions involving acetone and various aldehydes. This approach holds promise for designing MOF/zeolite composite catalysts.

Porous Single-crystalline Centimeter-sized α-Al2 O3 Monoliths for Selective and Durable Non-oxidative Dehydrogenation of Ethane

Alpha alumina (α-Al2 O3 ) are inert materials with outstanding thermal, chemical and mechanical stability. Herein, we fabricate porous single-crystalline (PSC) α-Al2 O3 monoliths at centimeter scale to endow them with high catalytic activity while maintaining their stability. We reduce PSC α-Al2 O3 monoliths to create oxygen vacancies in lattice and stabilize them by the ordered lattice to construct unsaturated Al-O coordination structures for enhancing the catalytic activity. The generation of oxygen vacancy at 18e wyckoff position contributes to the unsaturated Al-O coordination. As a case study, we demonstrate the outstanding performance with conversion (≈34 %) and selectivity (≈95 %) toward non-oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane to ethylene at 700 °C. We achieve the outstanding performance without obvious degradation even after a continuous operation over 1000 hours at 700 °C.

Light olefin synthesis from a diversity of renewable and fossil feedstocks: state-of the-art and outlook

Light olefins are important feedstocks and platform molecules for the chemical industry. Their synthesis has been a research priority in both academia and industry. There are many different approaches to the synthesis of these compounds, which differ by the choice of raw materials, catalysts and reaction conditions. The goals of this review are to highlight the most recent trends in light olefin synthesis and to perform a comparative analysis of different synthetic routes using several quantitative characteristics: selectivity, productivity, severity of operating conditions, stability, technological maturity and sustainability. Traditionally, on an industrial scale, the cracking of oil fractions has been used to produce light olefins. Methanol-to-olefins, alkane direct or oxidative dehydrogenation technologies have great potential in the short term and have already reached scientific and technological maturities. Major progress should be made in the field of methanol-mediated CO and CO₂ direct hydrogenation to light olefins. The electrocatalytic reduction of CO₂ to light olefins is a very attractive process in the long run due to the low reaction temperature and possible use of sustainable electricity. The application of modern concepts such as electricity-driven process intensification, looping, CO₂ management and nanoscale catalyst design should lead in the near future to more environmentally friendly, energy efficient and selective large-scale technologies for light olefin synthesis.

Oxidative Dehydrogenation of Ethane with CO2 over Mo/LDO Catalyst: The Active Species of Mo Controlled by LDO

A series of the layered double oxides supported molybdenum oxide catalysts were synthesized and evaluated in the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane with CO2 (CO2-ODHE). The 22.3 wt% Mo/LDO catalyst delivered a 92.3%selectivity to ethylene and a 7.9% ethane conversion at relatively low temperatures. The molybdenum oxide catalysts were fully characterized by XRD, BET, SEM, TEM, UV–vis, Raman TG, and XPS. Isolated [MoO4]2− dominated on the surface of the fresh 12.5 wt% Mo/LDO catalyst. With the increase of the Mo content, the Mo species transformed from [MoO4]2− to [Mo7O24]6− and [Mo8O26]4− on the 22.3 wt% and 30.1 wt% Mo/LDO catalysts, respectively. The redox mechanism was proposed and three Mo species including [MoO4]2−, [Mo7O24]6−, and [Mo8O26]4− showed quite different functions in the CO2-ODHE reaction: [MoO4]2−, with tetrahedral structure, preferred the non-selective pathway; [Mo7O24]6−, with an octahedral construction, promoted the selective pathway; and the existence of [Mo8O26]4− reduced the ability to activate ethane. This work provides detailed insights to further understand the relationship between structure–activity and the role of surface Mo species as well as their aggregation state in CO2-ODHE.

Stable co-production of olefins and aromatics from ethane over Co2+-exchanged HZSM-5 zeolite

Olefins and aromatics can be stably co-produced from ethane over a Co-exchanged HZSM-5 catalyst in which isolated Co(ii) species are anchored at Brønsted acid sites and active for efficient ethane dehydrogenation.
