Enhanced Catalysis Based on the Surface Environment of the Silica-Supported Metal Complex

New insights for valorization of polyolefins/light alkanes: catalytic dehydrogenation of n-alkanes by immobilized pincer-iridium complexes

This scientific review delves into the innovative realm of polyolefins/light alkanes valorization through their catalytic dehydrogenation employing pincer-ligated iridium organometallic complexes. These widely studied catalysts exhibit outstanding properties, although the intrinsic characteristics of homogeneous catalysis (such as challenging product-catalyst separation, poor applicability to continuous-flow processes and low recyclability) limit their activity and industrial application, as well as their thermal stability. Through the immobilization of complexes on inorganic supports, these downsides have been bypassed, harnessing the true potential of these catalysts, affording more selective and stable catalysts in addition to facilitating their implementation in industrial processes. The findings described herein contribute to the advancement in the understanding of catalytic processes in hydrocarbon transformations, offering promising avenues for sustainable and selective production of valuable chemical intermediates from readily available feedstocks.

Versatile Palladium-catalyzed intramolecular cyclization to access new luminescent azaphosphaphenalene motifs

Using a straightforward sequence of diphosphonylation and a Pd-catalysed concerted-metalation-deprotonation (CMD), a synthetic strategy towards polyaromatic phosphorus containing heterocycles was developed. Herein, we report the synthesis and characterization of new azaphosphaphenalenes, using easily accessible palladium catalysts and starting materials. The key tetrahydroquinoline intermediates of the reaction were synthesised via a fast and effective procedure and could be isolated as such, or further reacted towards the target polyaromatic structures. The obtained products showed interesting luminescent properties and their emission, excitation and quantum yields were evaluated.

Feeble Single-Atom Pd Catalysts for H2 Production from Formic Acid

Single-atom catalysts are thought to be the pinnacle of catalysis. However, for many reactions, their suitability has yet to be unequivocally proven. Here, we demonstrate why single Pd atoms (PdSA) are not catalytically ideal for generating H2 from formic acid as a H2 carrier. We loaded PdSA on three silica substrates, mesoporous silicas functionalized with thiol, amine, and dithiocarbamate functional groups. The Pd catalytic activity on amino-functionalized silica (SiO2-NH2/PdSA) was far higher than that of the thiol-based catalysts (SiO2-S-PdSA and SiO2-NHCS2-PdSA), while the single-atom stability of SiO2-NH2/PdSA against aggregation after the first catalytic cycle was the weakest. In this case, Pd aggregation boosted the reaction yield. Our experiments and calculations demonstrate that PdSA in SiO2-NH2/PdSA loosely binds with amine groups. This leads to a limited charge transfer from Pd to the amine groups and causes high aggregability and catalytic activity. According to the density functional calculations, the loose binding between Pd and N causes most of Pd's 4d electrons in amino-functionalized SiO2 to remain close to the Fermi level and labile for catalysis. However, PdSA chemically binds to the thiol group, resulting in strong hybridization between Pd and S, pulling Pd's 4d states deeper into the conduction band and away from the Fermi level. Consequently, fewer 4d electrons were available for catalysis.

Suzuki-Miyaura Cross-Coupling Reaction Using Palladium Catalysts Supported on Phosphine Periodic Mesoporous Organosilica

Phosphine periodic mesoporous organosilicas (R-P-PMO-TMS: R=Ph, tBu), which possess electron-donating alkyl substituents on the phosphorus atom, were synthesized using bifunctional compounds with alkoxysilyl- and phosphino groups, bis[3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl]phenylphosphine borane (1 a) and bis[3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl]-tert-butylphosphine borane (1 b). Immobilization of Pd(0) species was performed to give R-P-Pd-PMO-TMS: R=Ph (2 a), tBu (3 a), respectively. The Pd(0) immobilized 2 a and 3 a were applicable as catalysts for Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions of aryl chlorides with phenylboronic acid. It was revealed that 3 a bearing more electron-donating tBu groups exhibited higher catalytic activity. Various functional groups including both electron withdrawing and donating substituents were compatible in the system. The recyclability of 3 a was examined to support its moderate utility for the recycle use.

Accelerated Diffusion of a Copper(I)-Functionalized COF Packed Bed Reactor for Efficient Continuous Flow Catalysis

Flow chemistry provides a neo-orientation for the research and development of chemical technology, in which heterogeneous continuous catalysis based on packed beds can realize rapid separation and recycling. However, options for heterogeneous catalysts are still limited. In this work, we gradually grow covalent organic frameworks (COFs, TpBpy) on the surface of a silica gel (SiO2)-supported substrate to obtain a stable copper(I)-chelated high-loading heterogeneous catalyst (SiO2@CuI-TpBpy). SiO2@CuI-TpBpy shows high catalytic activity in three-component Huisgen 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition, giving the corresponding triazoles with excellent yields and reposeful recyclability under batch conditions. The structures of the catalysts remain steady, and the copper contents are basically unchanged after five cycles. Then, the catalysts are successfully applied for three-component heterogeneous catalysis in a one-pot continuous flow to prepare rufinamide in 89% yield for 24 h stably and efficiently with mere traces of copper ions remaining. More importantly, the catalytic system reveals a minuscule effect of catalyst particle size on internal diffusion. This COF encapsulation strategy presents a new possibility for the design of industrial heterogeneous catalysts with high metal loading and low internal diffusion resistance.

XPS and HR TEM Elucidation of the Diversity of Titania-Supported Single-Site Ir Catalyst Performance in Spin-Selective Propene Hydrogenation

Immobilized [Ir(COD)Cl]2-Linker/TiO2 catalysts with linkers containing Py, P(Ph)2 and N(CH3)2 functional groups were prepared. The catalysts were tested via propene hydrogenation with parahydrogen in a temperature range from 40 °C to 120 °C which was monitored via NMR. The catalytic behavior of [Ir(COD)Cl]2-Linker/TiO2 is explained on the basis of quantitative and qualitative XPS data analysis performed for the catalysts before and after the reaction at 120 °C. It is shown that the temperature dependence of propene conversion and the enhancement of the NMR signal are explained via a combination of the stabilities of both the linker and immobilized [Ir(COD)Cl]2 complex. It is demonstrated that the N(CH3)2-linker is the most stable at the surface of TiO2 under used reaction conditions. As a result, only this sample shows a rise in the enhancement of the NMR signal in the 100-120 °C temperature range.

Concerted Hydrosilylation Catalysis by Silica-Immobilized Cyclic Carbonates and Surface Silanols

Developing a method for creating a novel catalysis of organic molecules is essential because of the growing interest in organocatalysis. In this study, we found that cyclic carbonates immobilized on a nonporous or mesoporous silica support showed catalytic activity for hydrosilylation, which was not observed for the free cyclic carbonates, silica supports, or their physical mixture. Analysis of the effects of linker lengths and pore sizes on the catalytic activity and carbonate C=O stretching frequency revealed that the proximity of carbonates and surface silanols was crucial for synergistic hydrosilylation catalysis. A carbonate and silanol concertedly activated the silane and aldehyde for efficient hydride transfer. Density functional theory calculations on a model reaction system demonstrated that both the carbonate and silanol contributed to the stabilization of the transition state of hydride transfer, which resulted in a reasonable barrier height of 16.8 kcal mol-1. Furthermore, SiO2/carbonate(C4) enabled the hydrosilylation of an aldehyde with an amino group without catalyst poisoning, owing to the weak acidity of surface silanols, in sharp contrast to previously developed acid catalysts. This study demonstrates that immobilization on a solid support can convert inactive organic molecules into active and heterogeneous organocatalysts.

DFT stimulation and experimental insights of chiral Cu(II)-salen scaffold within the pocket of MWW-zeolite and its catalytic study

A Cu(II)-salen complex encapsulated in MWW-framework as an efficient chiral organocatalyst was developed for the synthesis of 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2-(1H)-one (DHPMs) derivatives via an asymmetric pathway. In order to confirm its structural properties, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, powder XRD, BET, XPS, FE-SEM, EDX, UV-Vis, and FTIR spectra were used. Using computer-assisted DFT calculations, the Cu(II)-salen complex has been fine-tuned to fit into the pocket of the porous MWW support while keeping its chirality. This organocatalyst was shown to be a potent catalyst for the formation of the desired DHPMs product under short reaction times. Furthermore, this green protocol allows rapid and simple isolation of active MWW-trapped Cu(II)-salen scaffolds and its reusability in at least five consecutive runs without losing much of its activity.

Small molecule binding to surface-supported single-site transition-metal reaction centres

Despite dominating industrial processes, heterogeneous catalysts remain challenging to characterize and control. This is largely attributable to the diversity of potentially active sites at the catalyst-reactant interface and the complex behaviour that can arise from interactions between active sites. Surface-supported, single-site molecular catalysts aim to bring together benefits of both heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysts, offering easy separability while exploiting molecular design of reactivity, though the presence of a surface is likely to influence reaction mechanisms. Here, we use metal-organic coordination to build reactive Fe-terpyridine sites on the Ag(111) surface and study their activity towards CO and C₂H₄ gaseous reactants using low-temperature ultrahigh-vacuum scanning tunnelling microscopy, scanning tunnelling spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy supported by density-functional theory models. Using a site-by-site approach at low temperature to visualize the reaction pathway, we find that reactants bond to the Fe-tpy active sites via surface-bound intermediates, and investigate the role of the substrate in understanding and designing single-site catalysts on metallic supports.

The coordination chemistry of oxide and nanocarbon materials

Understanding how a ligand affects the steric and electronic properties of a metal is the cornerstone of the inorganic chemistry enterprise. What happens when the ligand is an extended surface? This question is central to the design and implementation of state-of-the-art functional materials containing transition metals. This perspective will describe how these two very different sets of extended surfaces can form well-defined coordination complexes with metals. In the Green formalism, functionalities on oxide surfaces react with inorganics to form species that contain X-type or LX-type interactions between the metal and the oxide. Carbon surfaces are neutral L-type ligands; this perspective focuses on carbons that donate six electrons to a metal. The nature of this interaction depends on the curvature, and thereby orbital overlap, between the metal and the extended π-system from the nanocarbon.

CO2-assisted 'Weathering' of Steel Slag-Derived Calcium Silicate Hydrate: A Generalized Strategy for Recycling Noble Metals and Constructing SiO2-Based Nanocomposites

The spent adsorbent loaded by toxic metals is a solid hazardous waste which could cause significant secondary pollution due to potential possible additional release of metal ions. Therefore, the main subject is direct reutilization of spent adsorbents which can further economically and realistically offer new features, like recycling metal adsorbed, or formation of functional SiO₂-based nanocomposites. The nanoporous structure and negative surface charges enable steel slag-derived amorphous calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) to retain effectively the incoming metal ions (e. g. Au³⁺, Ag⁺, Pd²⁺, Fe³⁺, Co²⁺, Ni²⁺, Cu²⁺, Zn²⁺, Ce³⁺, Y³⁺, and Gd³⁺) by chemisorption. Sparked by natural carbonation 'weathering', which ultimately sequestrates atmospheric CO₂ by alkaline silicate minerals to leach calcium from mineral matrix, the decalcification reactions of metal-bearing CSH results in successful recovery of noble metals (Ag, Au, Pd) upon NaOH etching the resultant SiO₂ support. Further, SiO₂-based heterostructures, containing nanocrystalline metals (e. g. Au⁰, Ag⁰, Pd⁰, Fe⁰, Co⁰, Ni⁰, Cu⁰, and Zn⁰) or rare-earth oxides (e. g. CeO₂, Y₂O₃, and Gd₂O₃), are formed after reduction in H₂/Ar (5 vol% H₂) flow, which is also very important for the multipurpose immobilization of diverse hybrid materials on SiO₂ surface (e. g. Cu⁰-Ag⁰@SiO₂, Cu⁰-CeO₂@SiO₂, and Cu⁰-Ag⁰-CeO₂@SiO₂).

Anchored complexes of rhodium and iridium for the hydrogenation of alkynes and olefins with parahydrogen

Iridium and rhodium complexes anchored on silica gel surface via NH2–(CH2)3– and P(Ph)2–(CH2)2– linker groups achieve high (∼9%) efficiency in pairwise addition of parahydrogen to unsaturated gaseous substrates in heterogeneous hydrogenation processes.

Rhodium-Iodide Complex on a Catalytically Active SiO2 Surface for One-Pot Hydrosilylation-CO2 Cycloaddition

In this study, a novel Rh-iodide complex was synthesized through a surface reaction between an immobilized Rh cyclooctadiene complex and alkylammonium iodide (N⁺ I^- ) on SiO₂ . In the presence of ammonium cations, the SiO₂ -supported Rh-iodide complex could be effectively used for the one-pot synthesis of various silylcarbonate derivatives starting from epoxy olefins, hydrosilanes, and CO₂ . The maximum turnover numbers (TONs) for the hydrosilylation reaction and the CO₂ cycloaddition were 7600 (Rh) and 130 (N⁺ I^- ), respectively. The catalyst exhibited much higher performance for hydrosilylation than solely the Rh complex on SiO₂ . The mechanism of the Rh-catalyzed hydrosilylation reaction and the local structure of Rh, which is affected by the co-immobilized N⁺ I^- , were investigated by using Rh and I K-edge XAFS and XPS. Analysis of the XAFS profiles indicated the presence of a Rh-I bond. The Rh unit was in its electron-rich state. Curve-fitting analysis of the Rh K-edge EXAFS profiles suggests dissociation of the cycloocta-1,5-diene (COD) ligand from the Rh center. Results from spectroscopic and kinetic analyses revealed that the high activity of the catalyst (during hydrosilylation) could be attributed to a decrease in steric hindrance and the electron-rich state of the Rh. The decrease in the steric hindrance could be attributed to the absence of COD, and the electron-rich state promoted the oxidative addition of Si-H. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of a one-pot silylcarbonate synthesis as well as a determination of a novel surface Rh-iodide complex and its catalysis.
