Propane Dehydrogenation and Cracking over Zn/H-MFI Prepared by Solid-State Ion Exchange of ZnCl2

Solvent structure and dynamics over Brønsted acid MWW zeolite nanosheets

In the liquid phase of heterogeneous catalysis, solvent plays an important role and governs the kinetics and thermodynamics of a reaction. Although it is often difficult to quantify the role of the solvent, it becomes particularly challenging when a zeolite is used as the catalyst. This difficulty arises from the complex nature of the liquid/zeolite interface and the different solvation environments around catalytically active sites. Here, we use ab initio molecular dynamics simulations to probe the local solvation structure and dynamics of methanol and water over MWW zeolite nanosheets with varying Brønsted acidity. We find that the zeolite framework and the number and location of the acid sites in the zeolite influence the structure and dynamics of the solvent. In particular, methanol is more likely to be in the vicinity of the aluminum (Al3+) at the T4 site than at T1 due to easy accessibility. The methanol oxygen binds strongly to the Al at the T4 site, weakening the Al-O for the bridging acid site, which results in the formation of the silanol group, significantly reducing the acidity of the site. The behavior of methanol is in direct contrast to that of water, where protons can easily propagate from the zeolite to the solvent molecules regardless of the acid site location. Our work provides molecular-level insights into how solvent interacts with zeolite surfaces, leading to an improved understanding of the catalytic site in the MWW zeolite nanosheet.

Well-Defined Supported ZnOx Species: Synthesis, Structure, and Catalytic Performance in Nonoxidative Dehydrogenation of C3-C4 Alkanes

ConspectusZinc oxide (ZnO) is a multipurpose material and finds its applications in various fields such as rubber manufacturing, medicine, food additives, electronics, etc. It has also been intensively studied in photocatalysis due to its wide band gap and environmental compatibility. Recently, heterogeneous catalysts with supported ZnOx species have attracted more and more attention for the dehydrogenation of propane (PDH) and isobutane (iBDH) present in shale/natural gas. The olefins formed in these reactions are key building blocks of the chemical industry. These reactions are also of academic importance for understanding the fundamentals of the selective activation of C-H bonds. Differently structured ZnOx species supported on zeolites, SiO2, and Al2O3 have been reported to be active for nonoxidative dehydrogenation reactions. However, the structure-activity-selectivity relationships for these catalysts remain elusive. The main difficulty stems from the preparation of catalysts containing only one kind of well-defined ZnOx species.In this Account, we describe the studies on PDH and iBDH over differently structured ZnOx species and highlight our approaches to develop catalysts with controllable ZnOx speciation relevant to their performance. Several methods, including (i) the in situ reaction of gas-phase metallic Zn atoms with OH groups on the surface of supports, (ii) one-pot hydrothermal synthesis, and (iii) impregnation/anchoring methods, have been developed/used for the tailored preparation of supported ZnOx species. The first method allows precise control of the molecular structure of ZnOx through the nature of the defective OH groups on the supports. Using this method, a series of ZnOx species ranging from isolated, binuclear to nanosized ZnOx have been successfully generated on different SiO2-based or ZrO2-based supports as demonstrated by complementary ex/in situ characterization techniques. Based on kinetic studies and detailed characterization results, the intrinsic activity (Zn-related turnover frequency) of ZnOx was found to depend on its speciation. It increases with an increasing number of Zn atoms in a ZnmOn cluster from 1 to a few atoms (less than 10) and then decreases strongly for ZnOx nanoparticles. The latter promote the formation of undesired C1-C2 hydrocarbons and coke, resulting in lower propene selectivity in comparison with the catalysts containing only ZnOx species ranging from isolated to subnanometer ZnmOn clusters. In addition, the strategy for improving the thermal stability of ZnOx species and the consequences of mass-transport limitations for DH reactions were also elucidated. The results obtained allowed us to establish the fundamentals for the targeted preparation of well-structured ZnOx species and the relationships between their structures and the DH performance. This knowledge may inspire further studies in the field of C-H bond activation and other reactions, in which ZnOx species act as catalytically active sites or promoters, such as the dehydroaromatization of light alkanes and the hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol.

Sulfadiazine removal efficiency with persulfate driven by electron-rich Cu-beta zeolites

Surface electron transport and transfer of catalysts have important consequences for persulfate (PS) activation in PS system. In this paper, an electron-rich Cu-beta zeolites catalyst was synthesized utilizing a straightforward solid-state ion exchange technique to efficiently degrade sulfadiazine. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) results revealed that Cu element substitutes Al element and enters the beta molecular sieve framework smoothly. Furthermore, the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements demonstrated that the Cu-beta catalyst is primarily Cu0. Cu-beta zeolites catalyst can exhibit excellent catalytic activity to degrade sulfadiazine with the oxidant of PS. The optimal sulfadiazine removal performance was explored by adjusting reaction parameters, including sulfadiazine concentration, catalyst dosage, oxidant dosage, and solution pH. The sulfadiazine removal efficiency in the Cu-beta zeolites/PS system could reach 90.5% at the optimal reaction condition ([PS]0 = 0.5 g/L, [Cu-beta zeolites]0 = 1.0 g/L, pH = 7.0) with 50 mg/L of sulfadiazine. Meanwhile, The degradation efficiency was less affected by anionic interference (Cl-, SO4-, HCO3-). The surface electron transport and transfer of the Cu-beta zeolites catalyst were significant causes for the remarkable degradation performance. According to electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and quenching studies, the Cu-beta zeolites/PS system was mostly dominated by SO4•- in the degradation of sulfadiazine. Furthermore, two possible pathways for sulfadiazine degradation were proposed according to the analysis of intermediate products detected by the liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS).

Fluoride- and Seed-Free Synthesis of Pure-Silica Zeolite Adsorbent and Matrix Using OSDA-Mismatch Approach

The pure-silica zeolite plays a crucially important role in the gas separation of alkane/alkene, the low-k dielectric material, and the robust matrix for confining metal species during catalysis. However, the environmentally friendly synthesis of pure-silica zeolites is still challenging since (1) the toxic fluoride or dealuminum seeds are inevitably utilized through the hydrothermal synthesis and (2) it will also take a longer crystallization time. Herein, we present an efficient method called the OSDA-mismatch approach for the fluoride- and seed-free synthesis of pure-silica zeolites using Si-SOD (enriched 4-rings) as the sole silica source. This approach allows for the rapid and green synthesis of 15 pure-silica zeolites (CHA, *BEA, EUO, SFF, STF, -SVR, *-SVY, DOH, MTN, NON, *MRE, MEL, MFI, MTW, and *STO). Furthermore, distinct crystallization mechanisms of two significant pure-silica CHA- and *BEA-type zeolites (denoted as Si-CHA and Si-BEA) are investigated in detail by advanced characterization techniques such as FIB, 3D ED, 4D-STEM, HRTEM, Raman, and 29Si MAS NMR. More importantly, Si-CHA displays promising propane/propylene separation performance even better than the one synthesized in the presence of toxic HF. In addition, the incorporation of Zn species within Si-BEA fabricated by this approach also renders superior performance on propane dehydrogenation.

Site Diversity and Mechanism of Metal-Exchanged Zeolite Catalyzed Non-Oxidative Propane Dehydrogenation

Metal-exchanged zeolites are well-known propane dehydrogenation (PDH) catalysts; however, the structure of the active species remains unresolved. In this review, existing PDH catalysts are first surveyed, and then the current understanding of metal-exchanged zeolite catalysts is described in detail. The case of Ga/H-ZSM-5 is employed to showcase that advances in the understanding of structure-activity relations are often accompanied by technological or conceptional breakthroughs. The understanding of Ga speciation at PDH conditions has evolved owing to the advent of in situ/operando characterizations and to the realization that the local coordination environment of Ga species afforded by the zeolite support has a decisive impact on the active site structure. In situ/operando quantitative characterization of catalysts, rigorous determination of intrinsic reaction rates, and predictive computational modeling are all significant in identifying the most active structure in these complex systems. The reaction mechanism could be both intricately related to and nearly independent of the details of the assumed active structure, as in the two main proposed PDH mechanisms on Ga/H-ZSM-5, that is, the carbenium mechanism and the alkyl mechanism. Perspectives on potential approaches to further elucidate the active structure of metal-exchanged zeolite catalysts and reaction mechanisms are discussed in the final section.

CO2-Assisted Dehydrogenation of Propane to Propene over Zn-BEA Zeolites: Impact of Acid–Base Characteristics on Catalytic Performance

Research results about the influence of BEA zeolite preliminary dealumination on the acid–base characteristics and catalytic performance of 1% Zn-BEA compositions in propane dehydrogenation with CO2 are presented. The catalyst samples, prepared through a two-step post-synthesis procedure involving partial or complete dealumination of the BEA specimen followed by the introduction of Zn2+ cations into the T-positions of the zeolite framework, were characterized using XRD, XPS, MAS NMR, SEM/EDS, low-temperature N2 ad/desorption, C3H8/C3H6 (CO2, NH3)-TPD, TPO-O2, and FTIR-Py techniques. Full dealumination resulted in the development of a mesoporous structure and specific surface area (BET) with a twofold decrease in the total acidity and basicity of Zn-BEA, and the formation of Lewis acid sites and basic sites of predominantly medium strength, as well as the removal of Brønsted acid sites from the surface. In the presence of the ZnSiBEA catalyst, which had the lowest total acidity and basicity, the obtained selectivity of 86–94% and yield of 30–33% for propene (at 923 K) exceeded the values for ZnAlSiBEA and ZnAlBEA. The results of propane dehydrogenation with/without carbon dioxide showed the advantages of producing the target olefin in the presence of CO2 using Zn-BEA catalysts.

Influence of the Au-Ti Active Site of the Titanosilicate MWW Zeolite on the Catalytic Activity of Ethane Dehydrogenation in the Presence of O2

The titanosilicate zeolite with a MWW topology structure was synthesized by the atom-planting method through the dehydrochlorination of the hydroxyl group in the deboronated ERB-1 zeolite (D-ERB-1) and TiCl₄, and Au was further loaded with the deposition precipitation method to apply for the ethane direct dehydrogenation (DH) and dehydrogenation of ethane in the presence of O₂ (O₂-DH). It was found that Au nanoparticles (NPs) below 5 nm exhibited good activity for ethane direct dehydrogenation and O₂-DH. The addition of titanium can not only anchor more Au but also make Au have a more dispersed homogeneous distribution. The ethane O₂-DH catalytic performances of Au-loaded Ti-incorporated D-ERB-1 (Ti-D-ERB-1) were compared to those of Au-loaded ZnO-D-ERB-1 and pure silicate D-ERB-1. The results confirm that ethane O₂-DH catalyzed by Au-Ti paired active sites is a tandem reaction of catalytic ethane DH and selective H₂ combustion (SHC) of generated H₂. According to the experimental results and calculated kinetic parameters, such as the activation energy of DH and SHC reaction heat of O₂-DH, SHC catalyzed by the Au/Ti-D-ERB-1 catalyst containing the Au-Ti active site can not only break the ethane dehydrogenation thermodynamic equilibrium limitation to improve the ethylene yield but also suppress the CO₂ and CO selectivity.

Ga+-Chabazite Zeolite: A Highly Selective Catalyst for Nonoxidative Propane Dehydrogenation

Ga-chabazite zeolites (Ga-CHA) have been found to efficiently catalyze propane dehydrogenation with high propylene selectivity (96%). In situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and pulse titrations are employed to determine that upon reduction, surface Ga₂O₃ is reduced and diffuses into the zeolite pores, displacing the Brønsted acid sites and forming extra-framework Ga⁺ sites. This isolated Ga⁺ site reacts reversibly with H₂ to form GaH_x (2034 cm^-1) with an enthalpy of formation of ∼-51.2 kJ·mol^-1, a result supported by density functional theory calculations. The initial C₃H₈ dehydrogenation rates decrease rapidly (40%) during the first 100 min and then decline slowly afterward, while the C₃H₆ selectivity is stable at ∼96%. The reduction in the reaction rate is correlated with the formation of polycyclic aromatics inside the zeolite (using UV-vis spectroscopy) indicating that the accumulation of polycyclic aromatics is the main cause of the deactivation. The carbon species formed can be easily oxidized at 600 °C with complete recovery of the PDH catalytic properties. The correlations between GaH_x vs Ga/Al ratio and PDH rates vs Ga/Al ratio show that extra-framework Ga⁺ is the active center catalyzing propane dehydrogenation. The higher reaction rate on Ga⁺ than In⁺ in CHA zeolites, by a factor of 43, is the result of differences in the stabilization of the transition state due to the higher stability of Ga³⁺ vs In³⁺. The uniformity of the Ga⁺ sites in this material makes it an excellent model for the molecular understanding of metal cation-exchanged hydrocarbon interactions in zeolites.

Ultralow-Loading Pt/Zn Hybrid Cluster in Zeolite HZSM-5 for Efficient Dehydroaromatization

Minimizing Pt loading without sacrificing catalytic performance is critical, particularly for designing cost-efficient hydrocarbon transformation catalysts. Here, we show that ultralow-loading (0.001-0.05 wt %) Pt- and Zn-functionalized HZSM-5 catalysts, prepared through simple ion exchange and impregnation, are highly active and stable for light alkane dehydroaromatization (DHA). The specific activity of benzene, toluene, and xylene is up to 8.2 mol/g_Pt/min (or 1592 min^-1) over the 0.001 wt % Pt-Zn₂/HZSM-5 catalyst during ethane DHA at 550 °C under atmospheric pressure. Additionally, such bimetallic Pt_x-Zn_y/HZSM-5 catalysts are highly stable in contrast to the monometallic Pt/HZSM-5 catalysts. The rate constant of deactivation (k_deactiv), according to the first-order generalized power law equation model, for the bimetallic catalysts is up to 120 times lower than that of the monometallic counterparts, depending on the Pt loading. This breakthrough is achieved through the formation of the [Pt₁-Zn_n]^δ+ hybrid cluster, instead of Pt⁰ cluster-proton adducts, in the micropores of the ZSM-5 zeolite.
