Abstract
The catalytic system generated in situ from the cationic Ru-H complex [(C6H6)(PCy3)(CO)RuH]+BF4- (1) with 2,3,4,5-tetrachloro-1,2-benzoquinone (L1) was found to be highly effective for promoting the deaminative coupling reaction of 2-aminoaryl aldehydes with branched amines to form 2-substituted quinoline products. The analogous deaminative coupling reaction of 2-aminoaryl ketones with branched amines led to the regioselective formation of 2,4-disubstituted quinoline products. A number of biologically active quinoline derivatives including graveolinine and a triplex DNA intercalator have been synthesized by using the catalytic method.

Abstract
Visible-light photocatalysis has evolved as a powerful technique to enable controllable radical reactions. Exploring unique photocatalytic mode for obtaining new chemoselectivity and product diversity is of great significance. Herein, we present a photo-induced chemoselective 1,2-diheteroarylation of unactivated alkenes utilizing halopyridines and quinolines. The ring-fused azaarenes serve as not only substrate, but also potential precursors for halogen-atom abstraction for pyridyl radical generation in this photocatalysis. As a complement to metal catalysis, this photo-induced radical process with mild and redox neutral conditions assembles two different heteroaryl groups into alkenes regioselectively and contribute to broad substrates scope. The obtained products containing aza-arene units permit various further diversifications, demonstrating the synthetic utility of this protocol. We anticipate that this protocol will trigger the further advancement of photo-induced alkyl/aryl halides activation.

Abstract
Tricomponent cobalt(salen)-catalyzed carbofunctionalization of unsaturated substrates by radical-polar crossover has the potential to streamline access to broad classes of heteroatom-functionalized synthetic targets, yet the reaction platform has remained elusive, despite the well-developed analogous hydrofunctionalizations mediated by high-valent alkylcobalt intermediates. We report herein the development of a cobalt(salen) catalytic system that enables carbofunctionalization. The reaction entails a tricomponent decarboxylative 1,4-carboamination of dienes and provides a direct route to aromatic allylic amines by obviating preformed allylation reagents and protection of oxidation-sensitive aromatic amines. The catalytic system merges acridine photocatalysis with cobalt(salen)-catalyzed regioselective 1,4-carbofunctionalization that facilitates the crossover of the radical and polar phases of the tricomponent coupling process, revealing critical roles of the reactants, as well as ligand effects and the nature of the formal high-valent alkylcobalt species on the chemo- and regioselectivity.

Abstract
Due to the high C-H bond dissociation energy of alkanes, the utilization of alkanes as alkyl radical precursors for C-H functionalization of heteroarenes is synthetically captivating but practically challenging, especially under metal- and photocatalyst-free conditions. We report herein a mild and practical visible-light-mediated method for C-H alkylation of quinoxalin-2(1H)-ones using trifluoroacetic acid as a hydrogen atom transfer reagent and air as an oxidant. This mild protocol was performed under metal- and photocatalyst-free circumstances and presented good functional-group tolerance as well as a broad substrate scope.

Abstract
While titanacyclopropanes are used to react mainly with ester, amide, and cyano to undergo cyclopropanation, herein they react preferentially with pyridine N-oxide to accomplish C2-H alkylation beyond these functionalities with double regioselectivity. After being pyridylated at the less hindered C-Ti bond, the remaining C-Ti bond of titanacyclopropanes can be further functionalized by various electrophiles, allowing facile introduction of complex alkyls onto the C2 of pyridines. Its synthetic potential has been demonstrated by late-stage diversification of drugs.

Abstract
Triazoles have major roles in chemistry, medicine, and materials science, as centrally important heterocyclic motifs and bioisosteric replacements for amides, carboxylic acids, and other carbonyl groups, as well as some of the most widely used linkers in click chemistry. Yet, the chemical space and molecular diversity of triazoles remains limited by the accessibility of synthetically challenging organoazides, thereby requiring preinstallation of the azide precursors and restricting triazole applications. We report herein a photocatalytic, tricomponent decarboxylative triazolation reaction that for the first time enables direct conversion of carboxylic acids to triazoles in a single-step, triple catalytic coupling with alkynes and a simple azide reagent. Data-guided inquiry of the accessible chemical space of decarboxylative triazolation indicates that the transformation can improve access to the structural diversity and molecular complexity of triazoles. Experimental studies demonstrate a broad scope of the synthetic method that includes a variety of carboxylic acid, polymer, and peptide substrates. When performed in the absence of alkynes, the reaction can also be used to access organoazides, thereby obviating preactivation and specialized azide reagents and providing a two-pronged approach to C-N bond-forming decarboxylative functional group interconversions.

Abstract
The reaction of trimethyl(trifluoromethyl)silane-tetrabutylammonium difluorotriphenylsilicate (CF3SiMe3-TBAT) with a series of imidazoles gives products of the formal difluorocarbene insertion into the C-H bond at the C-2 position (i.e., C-difluoromethylation). According to NMR spectra, the corresponding 2-(trimethylsilyl)difluoromethyl-substituted derivatives are likely formed as the intermediates in the reaction, and then, they slowly convert to 2-difluoromethyl-substituted imidazoles. Quantum chemical calculations of two plausible reaction mechanisms indicate that it proceeds through the intermediate imidazolide anion stabilized through the interaction with solvent molecules and counterions. In the first proposed mechanism, the anion reacts with difluorocarbene without an activation barrier, and then, the CF2 moiety of the adduct attacks the CF3SiMe3 molecule. After the elimination of the CF3 anion, 2-(trimethylsilyl)difluromethyl-substituted imidazole is formed. Another possible reaction pathway includes silylation of imidazolide anion at the N-3 atom, followed by the barrierless addition of difluorocarbene at the C-2 atom and then by 1,3-shift of the SiMe3 group from N-3 to the carbon atom of the CF2 moiety. Both proposed mechanisms do not include steps with high activation barriers.

Abstract
The intermediate oxidation state of sulfoxides is central to the plethora of their applications in chemistry and medicine, yet it presents challenges for an efficient synthetic access, limiting the structural diversity of currently available sulfoxides. Here, we report a data-guided development of direct decarboxylative sulfinylation that enables the previously inaccessible functional group interconversion of carboxylic acids to sulfoxides in a reaction with sulfinates. Given the broad availability of carboxylic acids and the growing synthetic potential of sulfinates, the direct decarboxylative sulfinylation is poised to improve the structural diversity of synthetically accessible sulfoxides. The reaction is facilitated by a kinetically favored sulfoxide formation from the intermediate sulfinyl sulfones, despite the strong thermodynamic preference for the sulfone formation, unveiling the previously unknown and chemoselective radicalophilic sulfinyl sulfone reactivity.

Specifically, we describe the preparation of a unique class of ligands, 2,4-diarylquinolines, and demonstrate their application in nickel-catalyzed fragment couplings between alkyltrifluoroborates and haloarenes. We detail the synthesis of the most enabling ligand, PPQN2,4-di-OMe, on a gram scale via sequential Grignard reaction and Friedländer condensation. We also outline how coupling reactions are performed without external photocatalysts under violet light irradiation. For complete details on the use and execution of this protocol, please refer to Li et al. (2022b). Abstract
A novel dehydrogenative dicarbofunctionalization of vinyl arenes with polyfluoroarenes and unactivated alkanes enabled by copper catalysis has been accomplished under mild conditions. This transformation provides a regioselective route to highly functionalized polyfluoroaryl compounds that occur as structural scaffolds in a variety of pharmaceuticals and materials. Preliminary mechanistic studies indicate that the carbon-based radical and copper intermediate are involved in the reaction, and the reaction pathway is dominated by the bond dissociation energy (BDE) of C(sp3)-H bonds.

Tricomponent Decarboxysulfonylative Cross-Coupling Facilitates Direct Construction of Aryl Sulfones and Reveals a Mechanistic Dualism in the Acridine/Copper Photocatalytic System. Abstract
Dual catalytic systems involving photocatalytic activation and transition metal-catalyzed steps have enabled innovative approaches to the construction of carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bonds. However, the mechanistic complexity of the dual catalytic processes presents multiple challenges for understanding of the roles of divergent catalytic species that can impede the development of future synthetic methods. Here, we report a dual catalytic process that enables the previously inaccessible, broad-scope, direct conversion of carboxylic acids to aromatic sulfones-centrally important carbonyl group bioisosteric replacements and synthetic intermediates-by a tricomponent decarboxysulfonylative cross-coupling with aryl halides. Detailed mechanistic and computational studies revealed the roles of the copper catalyst, base, and halide anions in channeling the acridine/copper system via a distinct dual catalytic manifold. In contrast to the halide-free decarboxylative conjugate addition that involves cooperative dual catalysis via low-valent copper species, the halide counteranions divert the decarboxysulfonylative cross-coupling with aryl halides through a two-phase, orthogonal relay catalytic manifold, comprising a kinetically coupled (via antithetical inhibitory and activating roles of the base in the two catalytic cycles), mechanistically discrete sequence of a photoinduced, acridine-catalyzed decarboxylative process and a thermal copper-catalyzed arylative coupling. The study underscores the importance of non-innocent roles of counteranions and key redox steps at the interface of catalytic cycles for enabling previously inaccessible dual catalytic transformations.

Abstract
Conversion of carbonyl compounds, including aldehydes, ketones and carboxylic acids, into functionalized alkanes via deoxygenation would be highly desirable from a sustainability perspective and very enabling in chemical synthesis. This review covers the recent methodology development in carbonyl and carboxyl deoxygenative functionalizations, highlighting some typical and significant contributions in this field. These advances will be categorized based on types of bond formation, and in each part, selected examples will be discussed from their generalized mechanistic perspectives. Four summarized reactivity modes of aldehydes and ketones during the deoxygenation, namely, bis-electrophile, carbenoid, bis-nucleophile and alkyl radical, are presented, while the carboxylic acids are deoxygenated mainly via activated carbonyl or acetal intermediates.
