Mechanisms of the Oxygen Evolution Reaction on NiFe2O4 and CoFe2O4 Inverse-Spinel Oxides

Constructing Bipolar Dual-Active Sites through High-Entropy-Induced Electric Dipole Transition for Decoupling Oxygen Redox

It remains a significant challenge to construct active sites to break the trade-off between oxidation and reduction processes occurring in battery cathodes with conversion mechanism, especially for the oxygen reduction and evolution reactions (ORR/OER) involved in the zinc-air batteries (ZABs). Here, using a high-entropy-driven electric dipole transition strategy to activate and stabilize the tetrahedral sites is proposed, while enhancing the activity of octahedral sites through orbital hybridization in a FeCoNiMnCrO spinel oxide, thus constructing bipolar dual-active sites with high-low valence states, which can effectively decouple ORR/OER. The FeCoNiMnCrO high-entropy spinel oxide with severe lattice distortion, exhibits a strong 1s→4s electric dipole transition and intense t2g(Co)/eg(Ni)-2p(OL) orbital hybridization that regulates the electronic descriptors, eg and t2g, which leads to the formation of low-valence Co tetrahedral sites (Coth) and high-valence Ni octahedral sites (Nioh), resulting in a higher half-wave potential of 0.87 V on Coth sites and a lower overpotential of 0.26 V at 10 mA cm-2 on Nioh sites as well as a superior performance of ZABs compared to low/mild entropy spinel oxides. Therefore, entropy engineering presents a distinctive approach for designing catalytic sites by inducing novel electromagnetic properties in materials across various electrocatalytic reactions, particularly for decoupling systems.

Engineering improved strategies for spinel cathodes in high-performing zinc-ion batteries

The development of high-performing cathode materials for aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) is highly important for the future large-scale energy storage. Owing to the distinctive framework structure, diversity of valences, and high electrochemical activity, spinel materials have been widely investigated and used for aqueous ZIBs. However, the stubborn issues of low electrical conductivity and sluggish kinetics plague their smooth applications in aqueous ZIBs, which stimulates the development of effective strategies to address these issues. This review highlights the recent advances of spinel-based cathode materials that include the configuration of aqueous ZIBs and corresponding reaction mechanisms. Subsequently, the classifications of spinel materials and their properties are also discussed. Then, the review mainly summarizes the effective strategies for elevating their electrochemical performance, including their morphology and structure design, defect engineering, heteroatom doping, and coupling with a conductive support. In the final section, several sound prospects in this fervent field are also proposed for future research and applications.

Recent progress of Ni-based nanomaterials for the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction at large current density

The precise design and development of high-performing oxygen evolution reaction (OER) for the production of industrial hydrogen gas through water electrolysis has been a widely studied topic. A profound understanding of the nature of electrocatalytic processes reveals that Ni-based catalysts are highly active toward OER that can stably operate at a high current density for a long period of time. Given the current gap between research and applications in industrial water electrolysis, we have completed a systematic review by constructively discussing the recent progress of Ni-based catalysts for electrocatalytic OER at a large current density, with special focus on the morphology and composition regulation of Ni-based electrocatalysts for achieving extraordinary OER performance. This review will facilitate future research toward rationally designing next-generation OER electrocatalysts that can meet industrial demands, thereby promoting new sustainable solutions for energy shortage and environment issues.

One-Dimensional La0.2Sr0.8Cu0.4Co0.6O3-δ Nanostructures for Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Producing oxygen and hydrogen via the electrolysis of water has the advantages of a simple operation, high efficiency, and environmental friendliness, making it the most promising hydrogen production method. In this study, La0.2Sr0.8Cu0.4Co0.6O3-δ (LSCC) nanofibers were prepared by electrospinning to utilize non-noble perovskite oxides instead of noble metal catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction, and the performance and electrochemical properties of LSCC nanofibers synthesized at different firing temperatures were evaluated. In an alkaline environment (pH = 14, 6 M KOH), the nanofibers calcined at 650 °C showed an overpotential of 209 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 as well as good long-term stability. Therefore, the prepared LSCC-650 NF catalyst shows excellent potential for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution.

Beneficial Synergistic Intermetallic Effect in ZnCo2O4 for Enhancing the Limonene Oxidation Catalysis

Utilization of naturally occurring limonene from renewable biomass as a key starting material for the synthesis of valuable chemicals is a promising avenue to reduce both the dependence on nonrenewable fossil fuels and global CO2 emission. Herein, we report a highly active tremella-like ZnCo2O4 catalyst for the selective oxidation of limonene with molecular oxygen under mild reaction conditions. The developed ZnCo2O4 catalyst exhibits an appealing reaction performance with a limonene conversion of 93.5% (reaction rate of 0.0823 mmol gcat-1 h-1) and selectivity of 75.8% for 1,2-limonene oxide (LO), far outperforming the monometallic oxides of ZnO and Co3O4. Detained experimental characterizations and analyses manifest that the substitution of Zn into the Co3O4 framework can facilitate the formation of more unsaturated coordination sites and oxygen vacancies due to the modified chemical environment of Co atoms, inducing a beneficial synergistic intermetallic effect for the limonene oxidation catalysis.

Cyclohexane Oxidative Dehydrogenation on Graphene-Oxide-Supported Cobalt Ferrite Nanohybrids: Effect of Dynamic Nature of Active Sites on Reaction Selectivity

In this work, we investigated cyclohexane oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) catalyzed by cobalt ferrite nanoparticles supported on reduced graphene oxide (RGO). We aim to identify the active sites that are specifically responsible for full and partial dehydrogenation using advanced spectroscopic techniques such as X-ray photoelectron emission microscopy (XPEEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) along with kinetic analysis. Spectroscopically, we propose that Fe3+/Td sites could exclusively produce benzene through full cyclohexane dehydrogenation, while kinetic analysis shows that oxygen-derived species (O*) are responsible for partial dehydrogenation to form cyclohexene in a single catalytic sojourn. We unravel the dynamic cooperativity between octahedral and tetrahedral sites and the unique role of the support in masking undesired active (Fe3+/Td) sites. This phenomenon was strategically used to control the abundance of these species on the catalyst surface by varying the particle size and the wt % content of the nanoparticles on the RGO support in order to control the reaction selectivity without compromising reaction rates which are otherwise extremely challenging due to the much favorable thermodynamics for complete dehydrogenation and complete combustion under oxidative conditions.

Electrocatalytic Mechanism of Defect in Spinels for Water and Organics Oxidation

Spinels display promising electrocatalytic ability for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and organics oxidation reaction because of flexible structure, tunable component, and multifold valence. Unfortunately, limited exposure of active sites, poor electronic conductivity, and low intrinsic ability make the electrocatalytic performance of spinels unsatisfactory. Defect engineering is an effective method to enhance the intrinsic ability of electrocatalysts. Herein, the recent advances in defect spinels for OER and organics electrooxidation are reviewed. The defect types that exist in spinels are first introduced. Then the catalytic mechanism and dynamic evolution of defect spinels during the electrochemical process are summarized in detail. Finally, the challenges of defect spinel electrocatalysts are brought up. This review aims to deepen the understanding about the role and evolution of defects in spinel for electrochemical water/organics oxidation and provide a significant reference for the design of efficient defect spinel electrocatalysts.

Potential-dependent transition of reaction mechanisms for oxygen evolution on layered double hydroxides

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of crucial importance to sustainable energy and environmental engineering, and layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are among the most active catalysts for OER in alkaline conditions, but the reaction mechanism for OER on LDHs remains controversial. Distinctive types of reaction mechanisms have been proposed for the O-O coupling in OER, yet they compose a coupled reaction network with competing kinetics dependent on applied potentials. Herein, we combine grand-canonical methods and micro-kinetic modeling to unravel that the nature of dominant mechanism for OER on LDHs transitions among distinctive types as a function of applied potential, and this arises from the interplay among applied potential and competing kinetics in the coupled reaction network. The theory-predicted overpotentials, Tafel slopes, and findings are in agreement with the observations of experiments including isotope labelling. Thus, we establish a computational methodology to identify and elucidate the potential-dependent mechanisms for electrochemical reactions.

Constructing Molybdenum Phosphide@Cobalt Phosphide Heterostructure Nanoarrays on Nickel Foam as a Bifunctional Electrocatalyst for Enhanced Overall Water Splitting

The construction of multi-level heterostructure materials is an effective way to further the catalytic activity of catalysts. Here, we assembled self-supporting MoS₂@Co precursor nanoarrays on the support of nickel foam by coupling the hydrothermal method and electrostatic adsorption method, followed by a low-temperature phosphating strategy to obtain Mo₄P₃@CoP/NF electrode materials. The construction of the Mo₄P₃@CoP heterojunction can lead to electron transfer from the Mo₄P₃ phase to the CoP phase at the phase interface region, thereby optimizing the charge structure of the active sites. Not only that, the introduction of Mo₄P₃ will make water molecules preferentially adsorb on its surface, which will help to reduce the water molecule decomposition energy barrier of the Mo₄P₃@CoP heterojunction. Subsequently, H* overflowed to the surface of CoP to generate H₂ molecules, which finally showed a lower water molecule decomposition energy barrier and better intermediate adsorption energy. Based on this, the material shows excellent HER/OER dual-functional catalytic performance under alkaline conditions. It only needs 72 mV and 238 mV to reach 10 mA/cm² for HER and OER, respectively. Meanwhile, in a two-electrode system, only 1.54 V is needed to reach 10 mA/cm², which is even better than the commercial RuO₂/NF||Pt/C/NF electrode pair. In addition, the unique self-supporting structure design ensures unimpeded electron transmission between the loaded nanoarray and the conductive substrate. The loose porous surface design is not only conducive to the full exposure of more catalytic sites on the surface but also facilitates the smooth escape of gas after production so as to improve the utilization rate of active sites. This work has important guiding significance for the design and development of high-performance bifunctional electrolytic water catalysts.

Improving the Oxygen Evolution Reaction on Fe3O4(001) with Single-Atom Catalysts

Doping magnetite surfaces with transition-metal atoms is a promising strategy to improve the catalytic performance toward the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which governs the overall efficiency of water electrolysis and hydrogen production. In this work, we investigated the Fe₃O₄(001) surface as a support material for single-atom catalysts of the OER. First, we prepared and optimized models of inexpensive and abundant transition-metal atoms, such as Ti, Co, Ni, and Cu, trapped in various configurations on the Fe₃O₄(001) surface. Then, we studied their structural, electronic, and magnetic properties through HSE06 hybrid functional calculations. As a further step, we investigated the performance of these model electrocatalysts toward the OER, considering different possible mechanisms, in comparison with the pristine magnetite surface, on the basis of the computational hydrogen electrode model developed by Nørskov and co-workers. Cobalt-doped systems were found to be the most promising electrocatalytic systems among those considered in this work. Overpotential values (∼0.35 V) were in the range of those experimentally reported for mixed Co/Fe oxide (0.2-0.5 V).

Amorphous Oxysulfide Reconstructed from Spinel NiCo2 S4 for Efficient Water Oxidation

The progress of effective and durable electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is urgent, which is essential to promote the overall efficiency of green hydrogen production. To improve the performance of spinel cobalt-based oxides, which serve as promising water oxidation electrocatalysts in alkaline electrolytes, most researches have been concentrated on cations modification. Here, an anionic regulation mechanism is employed to adopt sulfur(S) anion substitution to supplant NiCo₂ O₄ by NiCo₂ S₄ , which contributed to an impressive OER performance in alkali. It is revealed that the substitution of S constructs a sub-stable spinel structure that facilitates its reconstruction into active amorphous oxysulfide under OER conditions. More importantly, as the active phase in the actual reaction process, the hetero-anionic amorphous oxysulfide has an appropriately tuned electronic structure and efficient OER electrocatalytic activity. This work demonstrates a promising approach for achieving anion conditioning-based tunable structure reconstruction for robust and easy preparation spinel oxide OER electrocatalysts.

Engineering sensitive gas sensor based on MOF-derived hollow metal-oxide semiconductor heterostructures

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) derived hollow heterostructured metal oxide semiconductors (MOSs) are a class of functional porous materials exhibiting distinctive physiochemical properties. Owing to the unique advantages, including large specific surface, high intrinsic catalytic performance, abundant channels for facilitating electron transfer and mass transport, and strong synergistic effect between different components, MOF-derived hollow MOSs heterostructures can work as promising candidates for gas sensing, which have thus attracted increasing attention. Aiming to provide a deep understanding on the design strategy and MOSs heterostructure, this review presents a comprehensive overview on the advantages and applications of MOF-derived hollow MOSs heterostructures when they used n for the detection of toxic gases. In addition, a deep discussion about the perspective and challenge of this interesting field is also well organized, hoping to provide guidance for the future design and development of more accurate gas sensors.
