Abstract
The limited active sites and faster photogenerated electron-hole pair recombination rate of g-C3N4 restrict its application in photocatalytic H2 production. Constructing heterojunctions has been shown to improve the spatial (directional) separation of photogenerated electrons and holes. However, due to interface mismatch in traditional heterojunction structures and a lack of precise electron transport channels, the photocatalytic efficiency is limited. Here, we developed a two-step calcination approach to create an Fe2N/g-C3N4 heterojunction linked by Fe-O bonds (named as Fe-OCN). The newly formed Fe-O bonds within the heterojunction can act as atomic-level interface electron transfer channels, directly transferring the photogenerated electrons of g-C3N4 to the reactive center Fe2N, significantly improving the charge transfer rate and utilization, thus promoting visible-light-driven photocatalytic H2 production. The optimal Fe-OCN achieved a H2 production rate of 5986.29 μmol g-1 h-1 under visible light, 13.44 times higher than that of the OCN due to efficient charge separation and transfer capabilities. This work provides a constructive reference for the design and synthesis of organic-inorganic heterojunction with chemically bonded interfaces, establishing quick electron transfer channels, and achieving targeted electron transfer.

Abstract
Exploring charge transfer channels in the Z-scheme heterojunction is an essential challenge. A strategy to precisely connect g-C3N4 with SrTiO3 through sharing N atoms was developed to create a chemically bonded Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst (STON/CNx). By sharing the N atoms, not only was the activity of the photocatalytic reduction of CO2 greatly improved, but the selectivity of the product was also changed. The CH4 product rate over optimal STON/CNx was 102.4 μmol g-1 h-1, with a 98.9% product selectivity. Both characterization and theoretical calculations indicate that N atoms tightly connect the heterostructures and serve as a channel for electron transport, facilitating the transfer of photogenerated electrons. This research lays a way for creating a sharing atoms' Z-scheme interface, providing the potential for exciting future photocatalytic applications.

Abstract
The photocatalytic efficiency can be improved by constructing a Z-scheme heterojunction, but hindered by the only half utilization efficiency of photogenerated carriers. Thus, a novel material, UiO-66-NH2@TAPB-BTCA-COP-Ag (U6N@COP-Ag), with surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect synergistic Z-scheme heterostructure has been prepared by depositing Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) on TAPB-BTCA-COP (COP)-coated UiO-66-NH2. The deposited Ag NPs expand the range of light absorption and introduce more photogenerated electrons in the composite. The SPR effect of noble metal compensates for the limited utilization of the Z-scheme heterojunction photogenerated carriers and the increased density of semiconductor carriers at the reducing end, which is more conducive to the redox reaction of the catalyst. Without sacrificial agents, U6N@COP-Ag shows great photocatalytic nitrogen reduction conversion efficiency with the rate of NH4+ in ammonia water at 167.63μmol g-1h-1, which is 6.6 and 2.8 times that of the original UiO-66-NH2 and COP, respectively. In-situ XPS and Kelvin probe technology verify that UiO-66-NH2 and Ag nanoparticles provide more photogenerated electrons to COP. The cleavage and conversion of N2 to NH4+ on U6N@COP-Ag was confirmed by the enhancement of NH bonds and NH4+ characteristic absorption peaks in the in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (in-situ DRIFTS). This work presents a great method to improve the Z-scheme heterojunction photogenerated carrier utilization and the density of semiconductor carriers at the reducing end by the noble metal SPR effect, which is more conducive to enhance the redox reaction of the catalyst.

Abstract
Transition metal oxides (TMOs) are promising cathode materials for aqueous zinc ion batteries (ZIBs), however, their performance is hindered by a substantial Hubbard gap, which limits electron transfer and battery cyclability. Addressing this, we introduce a heteroatom coordination approach, using triethanolamine to induce axial N coordination on Mn centers in MnO2, yielding N-coordinated MnO2 (TEAMO). This approach leverages the change of electronegativity disparity between Mn and ligands (O and N) to disrupt spin symmetry and augment spin polarization. This enhancement leads to the closure of the Hubbard gap, primarily driven by the intensified occupancy of the Mn eg orbitals. The resultant TEAMO exhibit a significant increase in storage capacity, reaching 351 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1. Our findings suggest a viable strategy for optimizing the electronic structure of TMO cathodes, enhancing the potential of ZIBs in energy storage technology.

Abstract
Defective carbon nitride (DCN-x) was synthesized through a dual-surface engineering process consisting of nitric acid treatment followed by high-temperature calcination. This process endowed DCN-x with a porous structure and a larger surface area than that of pure graphite carbon nitride (CN), enhancing its visible light absorption and reducing the electron-hole recombination rate. Consequently, DCN-x demonstrated a significantly more efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution, with the optimum sample, DCN-600, achieving an activity 55.9 times greater than that of pure CN, while maintaining excellent photocatalytic stability. Furthermore, the presence of tri-s-triazine (heptazine) structures within the CN's in-plane structure was identified as a critical factor for band gap optimization, suggesting new avenues for the synthesis of carbon nitride variants with enhanced photocatalytic performance.

Abstract
It is a challenging issue for the creation of photogenerated carrier collectors on the photocatalyst to drive charge separation and promote reaction kinetics in the photocatalytic reaction. Herein, based on one-step dual-modulation strategy, IrO2 nanodots are modified at the edge of polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) nanosheets and atomically dispersed Ir atoms are implanted in the skeleton of PCN to obtain a unique Ir-PCN/IrO2 photocatalyst. IrO2 nanodots and atomically dispersed Ir atoms act as hole and electron collectors to synergistically promote the carrier separation and reaction kinetics, respectively, thereby greatly improving the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE) performance. As a result, without adding additional cocatalyst, the PHE rate over the optimal Ir-PCN/IrO2-2% sample reaches up to 1564.4 μmol h-1 g-1 under the visible light irradiation, with achieving an apparent quantum yield (AQY) of 15.7% at 420 nm.

Abstract
The photocatalytic environmental decontamination ability of carbon nitride (g-C3N4, CN) typically suffers from their inherent structural defects, causing rapid recombination of photogenerated carriers. Conjugating CN with tailored donor-acceptor (D-A) units to counteract this problem through electronic restructuring becomes a feasible strategy, where confirmation by density functional theory (DFT) calculations becomes indispensable. Herein, DFT is employed to predirect the copolymerization modification of CN by benzene derivatives, screening benzaldehyde as the optimal electron-donating candidate for the construction of reoriented intramolecular charge transfer path. Experimental characterization and testing corroborate the formation of a narrowed bandgap as well as high photoinduced carrier separation. Consequently, the optimal BzCN-2 exhibited superior photocatalytic capacity in application for tetracycline hydrochloride degradation, with 3.73 times higher than that of CN. Besides, the BzCN-2-based photocatalytic system is determined to have a toxicity-mitigating effect on TC removal via T.E.S.T and prefers the removal of dissociable TC2- species under partial alkalinity. This work provides insight into DFT guidance for the design of D-A conjugated polymer and its application scenarios in photocatalytic decontamination.

Abstract
Photosynthesis of H2O2 from earth-abundant O2 and H2O molecules offers an eco-friendly route for solar-to-chemical conversion. The persistent challenge is to tune the photo-/thermo- dynamics of a photocatalyst toward efficient electron-hole separation while maintaining an effective driving force for charge transfer. Such a case is achieved here by way of a synergetic strategy of sub-band-assisted Z-Scheme for effective H2O2 photosynthesis via direct O2 reduction and H2O oxidation without a sacrificial agent. The optimized SnS2/g-C3N4 heterojunction shows a high reactivity of 623.0 µmol g-1 h-1 for H2O2 production under visible-light irradiation (λ > 400 nm) in pure water, ≈6 times higher than pristine g-C3N4 (100.5 µmol g-1 h-1). Photodynamic characterizations and theoretical calculations reveal that the enhanced photoactivity is due to a markedly promoted lifetime of trapped active electrons (204.9 ps in the sub-band and >2.0 ns in a shallow band) and highly improved O2 activation, as a result of the formation of a suitable sub-band and catalytic sites along with a low Gibbs-free energy for charge transfer. Moreover, the Z-Scheme heterojunction creates and sustains a large driving force for O2 and H2O conversion to high value-added H2O2.

Abstract
High-entropy materials (HEMs) have garnered extensive attention owing to their diverse and captivating physicochemical properties. Yet, fine-tuning morphological properties of HEMs remains a formidable challenge, constraining their potential applications. To address this, we present a rapid, low-energy consumption diethylenetriamine (DETA)-assisted microwave hydrothermal method for synthesizing a series of two-dimensional high-entropy selenides (HESes). Subsequently, the obtained HESes are harnessed for photocatalytic water splitting. Noteworthy is the optimized HESes, Cd0.9Zn1.2Mn0.4Cu1.8Cr1.2Se4.5, showcasing an output rate of hydrogen of 16.08 mmol h-1 g-1 and a quantum efficiency of ca. 30% under 420 nm monochromatic LED irradiation. It is revealed that the photocatalytic performance of these HESes stems not only from the enlarged specific surface area and enhanced photogenerated charge carrier utilization efficiency but also from the promoted formation of the Cd-Hads bond, influenced by multiple principal elements on the Cd. These findings provide a guide for the design of HEMs tailored for various applications.

Abstract
Heterostructured visible-light-responsive photocatalysts represent a prospective approach to achieve efficient solar-to-chemical energy conversion. Herein, we propose a facile self-assembly technique to synthesize NiO nanoparticles/C3N5 nanosheets (NOCN) heterojunctions for hydrogen (H2) evolution catalysis and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production under visible light. In this regard, the black NiO nanoparticles (NPs) were tightly anchored on the surface of C3N5 nanosheets (CNNS) to construct S-scheme NOCN heterojunction, enabling efficient charge separation and high redox capability. Obtained results elucidated that the incorporated NiO NPs significantly promote light-harvesting efficiency and photo-to-thermal capacity over the NOCN composites. The enhanced photothermal effect facilitates the charge carrier transfer rate across the heterojunction and boosts the surface reaction kinetics. Accordingly, the photocatalytic performances of CNNS for H2 release and H2O2 production can be manipulated by introducing NiO NPs. The modified photocatalytic properties of NOCN composites are ascribed to the synergistic effects of all integrated components and the S-scheme heterojunction formation. Impressively, the high H2 evolution photocatalysis efficiency of NOCN nano-catalysts in seawater certifies their potential environmental applicability. Among all, the 12-NOCN nano-catalyst exhibits a higher photocatalytic efficiency for H2 release (112.2 μmol∙g-1∙h-1) and H2O2 production (91.2 μmol∙L-1∙h-1). Besides, the 12-NOCN nano-catalyst reveals excellent recyclability and structural stability. Additionally, the possible mechanism for photothermal-assisted photocatalysis is proposed. This work affords a feasible pathway to design photothermal-assisted S-scheme heterojunctions for diverse photocatalytic applications.

Abstract
Compared with traditional electrolytic technology, directly using photocatalytic materials to produce hypochlorous acid from chlorine-containing water undoubtedly has stronger low-carbon and environmentally-friendly characteristics. However, currently reported materials with photocatalytic chlorine production performance require precious metal Pt for catalysis, which undoubtedly greatly increases production costs. Therefore, developing new types of non-precious metal-based photocatalytic materials for efficient hypochlorous acid synthesis has significant implications. In this study, we demonstrate a novel breakthrough by showing that the WO3/CdS with a Z-scheme structure effectively generated 3.54 mg/L of free chlorine in a 0.5 M NaCl solution, while also exhibiting spectral bactericidal and algal inhibition properties. The Z-scheme structure can effectively prevent carrier recombination and improve photocatalytic efficiency. Therefore, this research provides a novel approach to photocatalytic antifouling and holds significant implications for the application of photocatalytic technology in the marine antifouling industry.

Abstract
In this study, unique BiVO4-Au-Cu2O nanosheets (NSs) are well designed and multiple charge transfer paths are consequently constructed. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurement during a light off-on-off cycle and redox capability tests of the photo-generated charge carriers confirmed the formation of Z-scheme heterojunction, which can facilitate the charge carrier separation and transfer and maintain the original strong redox potentials of the respective component in the heterojunction. The ultrathin 2D structure of the BiVO4 NSs provided sufficient surface area for the photocatalytic reaction. The local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of the electron mediator, Au NPs, enhanced the light absorption and promoted the excitation of hot electrons. The multiple charge transfer paths effectively promoted the separation and transfer of the charge carrier. The synergism of the abovementioned properties endowed the BiVO4-Au-Cu2O NSs with satisfactory photocatalytic activity in the degradation of tetracycline (Tc) with a removal rate of ≈80% within 30 min under visible light irradiation. The degradation products during the photocatalysis are confirmed by using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and the plausible degradation pathways of Tc are consequently proposed. This work paves a strategy for developing highly efficient visible-light-driven photocatalysts with multiple charge transfer paths for removing organic contaminants in water.

Abstract
Controllable large-scale integration of two-dimensional (2D) materials with organic semiconductors and the realization of strong coupling between them still remain challenging. Herein, we demonstrate a wafer-scale, vertically layered SnSe2/PTAA heterojunction array with high light-trapping ability via a low-temperature molecular beam epitaxy method and a facile spin-coating process. Conductive probe atomic force microscopy (CP-AFM) measurements reveal strong rectification and photoresponse behavior in the individual SnSe2 nanosheet/PTAA heterojunction. Theoretical analysis demonstrates that vertically layered SnSe2/PTAA heterojunctions exhibit stronger C-Se covalent coupling than that of the conventional tiled type, which could facilitate more efficient charge transfer. Benefiting from these advantages, the SnSe2/PTAA heterojunction photodetectors with an optimized PTAA concentration show high performance, including a responsivity of 41.02 A/W, an external quantum efficiency of 1.31 × 104%, and high uniformity. The proposed approach for constructing large-scale 2D inorganic-organic heterostructures represents an effective route to fabricate high-performance broadband photodetectors for integrated optoelectronic systems.

Abstract
Introducing a donor-acceptor (D-A) unit is an effective approach to facilitate charge transfer in polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) and enhance photocatalytic performance. However, the introduction of hetero-molecules can lead to a decrease in crystallinity, limiting interlayer charge transfer and inhibiting further improvement. In this study, we constructed a novel D-A type carbon nitride with significantly higher crystallinity and a bi-directional charge transfer channel, which was achieved through 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylic acid (2,5-TDCA)-assisted self-assembly followed by KCl-templated calcination. The thiophene and cyano groups introduced serve as the electron donor and acceptor, respectively, enhancing in-plane electron delocalization. Additionally, introduced potassium ions are intercalated among the adjacent layers of carbon nitride, creating an interlayer charge transfer channel. Moreover, the highly ordered structure and improved crystallinity further facilitate charge transfer. As a result, the as-prepared photocatalyst exhibits superior photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE) activity of 7.449 mmol h-1 g-1, which is 6.03 times higher than that of pure carbon nitride. The strategy of developing crystalline D-A-structured carbon nitride with controlled in-plane and interlayer charge transfer opens new avenues for the design of carbon nitride with enhanced properties for PHE.

Abstract
The photocatalytic oxidation of benzyl alcohol and the simultaneous evolution of hydrogen from water are efficient dual-optimal routes. It is important to develop composite catalysts that combine redox properties and facilitate electron-hole separation and transport. Herein, the bimetallic-doped Mo-ZIS@Ti photocatalyst was designed and synthesized, and the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol and hydrogen evolution by water splitting was realized at the same time. Under visible light irradiation, benzyl alcohol was completely converted with more than 99% selectivity for benzaldehyde, and the H2 production rate was 5.6 times higher than the initial ZIS. The exceptional catalytic performance was ascribed to utilizing Ti-MIL-125 as a precursor, wherein slowly releasing-doped Ti formed robust Ti-S bonds that quickly transfer electrons and reduce sites. Meanwhile, doping Mo effectively captures photogenerated holes and acts as active sites for oxidation reactions. Both experimental characterization and work function calculations demonstrate that the bimetallic synergism effectively modulates the electronic structure of ZIS, promotes the directional separation of electrons and holes, and significantly improves the photoactivity and stability of ZIS. This work contributes a route to obtain benzaldehyde and green hydrogen at the same time and also gives new insights for the construction and mechanism study of bimetallic-doping catalysts.

Abstract
Photocatalysis is one of the most promising green technologies to utilize solar energy for clean energy achievement and environmental governance. There is a knotty problem to rational designing high-performance photocatalyst, which largely depends on an in-depth insight into their structure-activity relationships and complex photocatalytic reaction mechanisms. Synchrotron radiation based X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is an important characterization method for photocatlayst to offer the element-specific key geometric and electronic structural information at the atomic level, on this basis, time-resolved XAS technique has a huge impact on mechanistic understanding of photochemical reaction owing to their powerful ability to probe, in real-time, the electronic and geometric structures evolution within photocatalysis reactions. This review will focus on the fundamentals of XAS and their applications in photocatalysis. The detailed applications obtained from XAS is described through the following aspects: 1) identifying local structure of photocatalyst; 2) uncovering in situ structure and chemical state evolution during photocatalysis; 3) revealing the photoexcited process. We will provide an in depth understanding on how the XAS method can guide the rational design of highly efficient photocatalyst. Finally, a systematic summary of XAS and related significance is made and the research perspectives are suggested.

Abstract
The construction of heterointerface in photocatalyst is an efficient approach to boost the separation and utilization efficiency of charge carriers, which is challenging and crucial in photocatalysis. Here, the construction of melon-structured carbon nitride/N-doped WO3 (MCN/NWx) heterojunction photocatalyst was achieved by a method of prealcoholysis combined with thermal polymerization, where N-doping of WO3 was achieved in-situ in the formation of heterojunction. The promoted charge separation efficiency was realized through the charge transfer from the conduction band of N-doped WO3 to the valence band of the MCN. Density functional theory calculation results showed that the formation of the W-N heteroatom-interface led to the increase of density of states at the heterointerface and decrease of the band gap. The MCN/NWx nanocomposite featured a metallic band structure of the nanocomposite photocatalysts, resulting in the enhanced photocatalytic activity. The photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity of the MCN/NW2 was enhanced about 2.5 times than that of MCN. This research provides a novel insight into the construction of a novel heteroatom-junction that boosts the separation efficiency of charge carriers, and thereby improves the photocatalytic activity.

Abstract
Two-dimensional carbon nitrides (CxNy) have gained significant attention in various fields including hydrogen energy development, environmental remediation, optoelectronic devices, and energy storage owing to their extensive surface area, abundant raw materials, high chemical stability, and distinctive physical and chemical characteristics. One effective approach to address the challenges of limited visible light utilization and elevated carrier recombination rates is to establish heterojunctions for CxNy-based single materials (e.g. C2N3, g-C3N4, C3N4, C4N3, C2N, and C3N). The carrier generation, migration, and recombination of heterojunctions with different band alignments have been analyzed starting from the application of CxNy with metal oxides, transition metal sulfides (selenides), conductive carbon, and Cx'Ny' heterojunctions. Additionally, we have explored diverse strategies to enhance heterojunction performance from the perspective of carrier dynamics. In conclusion, we present some overarching observations and insights into the challenges and opportunities associated with the development of advanced CxNy-based heterojunctions.

Abstract
The issue of water resource pollution resulting from the discharge of dyes is a matter of great concern for the environment. In this investigation, a new ternary heterogeneous Mg-Al LDH@g-C3N4X@Ag3PO4Y (X = wt % of g-C3N4 with respect to Mg-Al layered double hydroxide (LDH) and Y = wt % of Ag3PO4 loaded on Mg-Al LDH@g-C3N430) nanocomposite was prepared with the aim of increasing charge carrier separation and enhancement of photocatalytic performance to degrade methylene blue (MB) dye. The prepared samples were subjected to characterization via Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, photoluminescence, and photoelectrochemical analysis. It was observed that in the presence of the composite of Mg-Al LDH and g-C3N4, the photocatalytic decomposition of MB under 150 W mercury lamp illumination increases significantly as opposed to Mg-Al LDH alone, and the Mg-Al LDH@g-C3N4 level with Ag3PO4 coating causes the complete degradation of MB to occur in less time. The outcomes show that the Mg-Al LDH@g-C3N430@Ag3PO45 nanocomposite demonstrated the highest photodegradation activity (99%). Scavenger tests showed that the two most effective agents in the photodegradation of MB are holes and hydroxyl radicals, respectively. Finally, a type II heterojunction photocatalytic degradation mechanism for MB by Mg-Al LDH@g-C3N430@Ag3PO45 was proposed.

Abstract
Electrochemical NO3- reduction reaction (NO3RR) is a promising technique for green NH3 synthesis. Tungsten oxide (WO3) has been regarded as an effective electrocatalyst for electrochemical NH3 synthesis. However, the weak adsorption and the sluggish hydrogenation of oxynitride intermediates (NOx, e.g., *NO3 and *NO2) over WO3 materials hinder the efficiency of converting NO3- to NH3. Herein, we design a heterostructure of tungsten nitride (WN) and WO3 (WN/WO3) nanosheets to optimize *NO3 and *NO2 adsorptions and facilitate *NO2 hydrogenations to achieve a highly efficient electrochemical NO3RR to produce NH3. Theoretical calculations predict that locally introducing WN into WO3 will shorten the distance between adjacent W atoms, resulting in *NO3 and *NO2 being strongly adsorbed on W active sites in the form of bidentate ligands instead of the relatively weak monodentate ligands. Furthermore, WN facilitates H2O dissociation to supply the requisite protons, which is beneficial for *NO2 hydrogenations. Inspired by theoretical prediction, WN/WO3 nanosheets are successfully fabricated through a high-temperature nitridation process. The transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy investigations confirm that the amorphous WN has been locally introduced in situ into WO3 nanosheets to form a composite heterostructure. The as-prepared WN/WO3 nanosheets exhibit a high Faraday efficiency of 88.9 ± 7.2% and an appreciable yield rate of 8.4 mg h-1 cm-2 toward NH3 production, which is much higher than that of individual WO3 and WN. The enhanced adsorption and hydrogenation behaviors of *NOx over WN/WO3 are characterized by in situ Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, consistent with the theoretical predictions. This work develops facile and effective heterostructure nanomaterials to tune the adsorption and hydrogenation of NOx for boosting the efficiency from NO3- to NH3.

Abstract
One of the most efficient ways for the photogenerated charge carriers is by the development of heterojunction between p-type and n-type semiconductors, which creates an interfacial charge transfer between two semiconductors. By enhancing the bifunctional characteristics for hydrogen generation via photocatalytic and electrocatalytic water splitting reaction, we report the type-II Cu2O/g-C3N4 heterostructure in this article. Due to significantly increased catalytically active sites for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) reaction during electrocatalysis and decreased charge transfer resistance, the as-prepared heterostructure exhibits a lower overpotential of 47 and 72 mVdec-1 for the HER and oxygen evolution reactions (OER), respectively, when compared to alone g-C3N4. In addition, Cu2O/g-C3N4 heterostructures have a higher photocatalytic hydrogen evolution of 3492 µmol gcat-1 in the presence of Triethanolamine as a sacrificial agent, which is nearly 2-fold times greater than g-C3N4 (1818 µmol gcat-1) after 5 h of continuous light-irradiation. Moreover, produced heterostructure exhibits 81% of Faradaic efficiency and 18% of apparent quantum yield. This work successfully explains how the rise in water splitting is induced by the transfer of photogenerated electrons in a cascade way from p-type Cu2O to the n-type g-C3N4 using density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Abstract
Heterojunctions have been proved to be the promising photocatalysts for hazardous contaminants removal, but the inferior interfacial contact, low carrier mobility and random carrier diffusion seriously hamper the photoactivity improvement of the conventional heterojunctions. Herein, SO chemically bonded p-n oriented heterostructure is fabricated via selectively anchoring of p-type Ag2S nanoparticles on the lateral facet of n-type Bi4TaO8Cl nanosheet. Such a p-n heterojunction engineering on specific facet of Bi4TaO8Cl semiconductor derives ingenious double internal electric field (IEF), which not only effectively creates the spatially separated oxidation and reduction sites, but also delivers the powerful driving forces for impactful spatial directed photocarrier transfer along the cascade path. Additionally, our experimental and theoretical analyses jointly signify that the interfacial SO bond could serve as an efficient atomic-level interfacial channel, which is conducive to encouraging the vectorial charge separation and migration kinetic. As a result, the Ag2S/Bi4TaO8Cl oriented heterojunction exhibits significantly enhanced visible light driven photocatalytic redox ability for tetracycline oxidation and hexavalent chromium reduction than those of single component and the traditional random/mixed heterojunctions. This study could provide a deeper insight into the synergistic effects of multi-IEF modulation and interfacial chemical bond bridging on optimizing the photogenerated carrier behaviors.

Abstract
Carbon dioxide anion radical (CO2•-) can act as a versatile single electron reductant, but its generation pathways are quite limited. Herein, we demonstrate that oxalic acid (OA) could be effectively and continuously utilized to produce CO2•- over Bi(C2O4)OH, a novel photocatalyst, under light irradiation. Bi(C2O4)OH would proceed with self-redox reactions under the light irradiation producing CO2•-, through the oxidation of C2O42-. OA in the solution could recoordinate with Bi3+, thus maintaining the structure of the photocatalysts and the stability of the reactions. Benefiting from the fast reaction between CO2•- and O2 in forming •O2-, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) would be efficiently produced (219.0 μmol/h). This study proposes a novel approach for harnessing OA containing wastewater and explores its potential application in the efficient production of H2O2.

Abstract
Heterogeneous growth of photocatalysts on different porous substrates is a solution to avoid secondary pollution caused by composite photocatalysts themselves. However, the heterogeneous growth of composite photocatalysts with nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (NCQDs) inclusions-introduced during synthesis-impedes the direct growth on the substrate. To overcome this problem, NCQDs were grown on a Co9S8 (NCQDs-G@Co9S8) layer, decorated on cotton fabric. This optimal coupling mode of NCQDs and Co9S8 showed 54% degradation, compared to 33% dye degradation via NCQDs-doped Co9S8 (NCQDs-D@Co9S8). The change in the crystal structure and its lower loading on fabric results in significantly lower performance of NCQDs-D@Co9S8. Even with the combination of both surface growth and doping (NCQDs-DG@Co9S8), the performance was still limited to 42%. In addition, the optimum growth concentration of NCQDs on Co9S8 was observed for 7.5 w/w %, resulting in 92% photocatalytic activity (PCA) in 80 min. Comparing different surface states formed in NCQDs using different solvents, water-based surface states (oxygen-rich surface) are most suitable for the dye degradation. NCQDs-G@Co9S8 also offers 67% Cr-VI reduction to Cr-III, showing its suitability for both inorganic and organic compounds. Better electrode performance was related to suitable charge separation of the composite, where -OH groups mainly contribute in the photocatalytic dye degradation..

Abstract
The development of a low-cost, environment-friendly and suitable semiconductor-based heterogeneous photocatalyst poses a great challenge towards extremely competent and substantial hydrogen evolution. A series of environment-friendly and proficient S-scheme Ni-doped CuWO4 nanocrystals supported on g-C3N4 nanocomposites (Ni-CuWO4/g-C3N4) were constructed to ameliorate the photocatalytic efficacy of pure g-C3N4 and Ni-CuWO4 and their activity in H2 generation through photocatalytic water splitting was evaluated. The Ni-CuWO4 nanoparticles were synthesized through doping of Ni2+ on wolframite CuWO4 crystals via the chemical precipitation method. An elevated hydrogen generation rate of 1980 μmol h-1 g-1 was accomplished over the 0.2Ni-CuWO4/g-C3N4 (0.2NCWCN) nanocomposite with an apparent quantum yield (AQY) of 6.49% upon visible light illumination (λ ≥ 420 nm), which is evidently 7.1 and 17.2 fold higher than those produced from pristine g-C3N4 and Ni-CuWO4. The substantial enhancement in the photocatalytic behaviour is primarily because of the large surface area, limited band gap energy of the semiconductor composite and magnified light harvesting capability towards visible light through the inclusion of g-C3N4, thus diminishing the reassembly rate of photoinduced excitons. Further, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to investigate the structural, electronic and optical properties of the composite. Theoretical results confirmed that the Ni-CuWO4/g-C3N4 composite is a potential candidate for visible-light-driven photocatalysts and corroborated with the experimental findings. This research provides a meaningful and appealing perspective on developing cost-effective and very proficient two-dimensional (2D) g-C3N4-based materials for photocatalytic H2 production to accelerate the separation and transmission process of radiative charge carriers.

Abstract
Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have shown great promise for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution via water splitting. However, the four-electron oxidation of water remains elusive toward oxygen evolution. Enabling this water oxidation pathway is critical to improve the yield and maximize atom utilization efficiency. A Z-scheme heterojunction is proposed for overcoming fundamental issues in COF-based photocatalytic overall water splitting (OWS), such as inefficient light absorption, charge recombination, and poor water oxidation ability. It is shown that the construction of a novel 2D/2D Z-scheme heterojunction through in situ growth of COFs on the O-vacancy WO3 nanosheets (Ov-WO3 ) via the WOC chemical bond can remarkably promote photocatalytic OWS. Benefiting from the synergistic effect between the enhanced built-in electric field by the interfacial WOC bond, the strong water oxidation ability of Ov-WO3, and the ultrathin structure of TSCOF, both separation and utilization efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole pairs can be significantly enhanced. An impressive photocatalytic hydrogen evolution half-rection rate of 593 mmol h-1 g-1 and overall water splitting rate of 146 (hydrogen) and 68 (oxygen) µmol h-1 g-1 are achieved on the COF-WO3 (TSCOFW) composite. This 2D/2D Z-scheme heterojunction with two-step excitation and precisely cascaded charge-transfer pathway makes it responsible for the efficient solar-driven OWS without a sacrificial agent.

Abstract
Developing a photosensitizer with high efficiency and long-term stability for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution is highly desirable yet remains a challenge. Herein, a novel Ir(III) complex-based photosensitizer (Ir3) bearing coumarin and triphenylamine groups is designed. Ir3 exhibits record activity and durability among reported transition metal complexes for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution, with a TON of 198,363 and a duration of 214 h. The excellent photocatalytic performance of Ir3 can be attributed to the synergistic effect of coumarin and triphenylamine, which improves the visible light absorption, charge separation, and electron transfer capacity of photosensitizers. This is an efficient and long-lived Ir(III) photosensitizer constructed on the basis of a synergistic approach, which could provide a new insight for the development of high-performance Ir(III) photosensitizers at the molecular level.

Abstract
Semiconductor photocatalytic water splitting is a green way to convert solar energy into chemical energy, but the recombination of electron and hole pairs and the low utilization of sunlight restrict the development of photocatalytic technology. By comparing the morphologies and hydrogen production properties of different proportions of solid solutions (CdxZn1-xS), one-dimensional (1D) Cd0.9Zn0.1S nanorods (NRs) with the best photocatalytic properties are obtained. In addition, 1D W18O49 nanowires are assembled on the surface of 1D Cd0.9Zn0.1S NRs to construct a novel 1D/1D step-scheme (S-scheme) W18O49/Cd0.9Zn0.1S heterojunction photocatalyst. The W18O49/Cd0.9Zn0.1S heterojunction expands the optical absorption capacity of Cd0.9Zn0.1S NRs to provide more energy for the photoexcitation of electrons. The optimal hydrogen production rate of W18O49/Cd0.9Zn0.1S NRs with W18O49 content of 9 wt% is as high as 66.3 mmol·h-1·g-1, which is 5.7 times and 1.6 times higher than that of Cd0.9Zn0.1S NRs and 1 wt% Pt/Cd0.9Zn0.1S NRs. The apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 9 wt% W18O49/Cd0.9Zn0.1S reaches 56.0 % and 25.9 % under light wavelength irradiation at 370 and 456 nm, respectively. After the 20 h cycle stability test, the activity of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution does not decrease, due that the severe photo-corrosion of Cd0.9Zn0.1S NRs is efficiently inhibited. This work not only provides a simple and controllable synthesis method for the preparation of heterojunction structure, but also opens up a new way to improve the hydrogen evolution activity and stability of sulfur compounds.

Abstract
Solar photocatalysis has emerged as a pollution-free and inexhaustible technique that has been extensively researched in the domains of environmental remediation and energy production. Herein, we have integrated ZnO and CdS nanoparticles through Cu as a solid-state electron mediator to design a ZnO-Cu-CdS Z-scheme heterosystem via a sol-gel route and further tested this as a photocatalyst for dye degradation, H2 evolution, and CO2 reduction. Within 60 min of visible light exposure, about 97% of methylene blue (MB) is degraded with a degradation rate constant of 0.042 min-1 for the ZnO0.45Cu0.1CdS0.45 catalyst. The MB degradation with this catalyst is 84, 21, 4.8, and 2 times as high as those of ZnO, CdS, ZnO0.5CdS0.5, and Cu0.1ZnO0.9 catalysts. The ZnO-Cu-CdS catalyst manifests an H2 evolution efficiency of 5579 μmol h-1 g-1, which is 169, 41, 3.9, and 3.5 times as high as those of ZnO, CdS, ZnO0.5CdS0.5, and Cu0.1ZnO0.9 catalysts. Using H2 as a reducing agent, the CO production rate over the ZnO0.45Cu0.1CdS0.45 catalyst reaches 770 μmol h-1 g-1, which is 3 and 1.8 times higher than those of ZnO0.5CdS0.5 and Cu0.1ZnO0.9 catalysts. Besides, the optimal CH4 production rate over ZnO0.45Cu0.1CdS0.45 reaches 890 μmol h-1 g-1. The improved photocatalytic response of the ZnO-Cu-CdS catalyst is assigned to the delayed recombination of photoexcited charge carriers through a Z-scheme charge transport mode, maintaining the photocarriers with strong redox potentials and the dual role of Cu to serve as a conductive bridge to accelerate the charge transfer rate and enhance the light absorption due to its SPR phenomenon. This research offers a promising strategy for developing binary/ternary Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalytic systems for different photocatalytic applications.

Abstract
The development of efficient heterojunctions with enhanced photocatalytic properties is considered a promising approach for photocatalytic hydrogen production. In this study, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4)-wrapped nickel-doped zinc oxide/carbon (Ni-ZnO@C/g-C3N4) core-double shell heterojunctions with unique core-double shell structures were employed as efficient photocatalysts through an innovative approach. Ni doping can enhance the intensity and range of visible light absorption in ZnO, and the carbon core coupled with the hollow double-shell structure can accelerate the charge transfer rate and improve the photon utilization efficiency. Meanwhile, the construction of the Z-scheme heterojunction extended the electron-hole pair transport path. In addition, the Z-scheme charge-transfer mechanism of Ni-ZnO@C/g-C3N4 under simulated sunlight was verified by photoluminescence (PL) and electron spin resonance (ESR) experiments. As a result, the obtained photocatalyst acquired a high hydrogen evolution rate of 336.08 μmol g-1h-1, which is 36.49 times higher than that of pristine ZnO. Overall, this work may provide a pathway for the construction of highly efficient photocatalysts with unique core-double shell structures.

Abstract
Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is considered to be a broad-spectrum toxicant, and it is crucial to address this problem due to its serious health and climate change impacts. Photocatalysis can be effectively applied for the reduction of H2S molecules to S and other products. We synthesized sandwich-structured composite materials with internally immobilized SiO2 nanospheres and externally wrapped COF layers co-modified with iron oxide nanoparticles. Furthermore, originally looked at the efficiency of photocatalysis in reducing hydrogen sulfide to sulfur. In this paper, a sandwich structure of core-shell composite photocatalysts based on SiO2 was prepared by a multi-step method including Stöber and double ligand-regulated solvent heat, and these sandwich core-shell structures exhibited high hydrogen sulfide reduction and stability in applications. In addition, characterization, degradation studies, active substance trapping studies, and energy band structure analysis showed that S-type heterojunctions could effectively increase photo-generated carrier separation. This research advanced knowledge of photocatalytic hydrogen sulfide reduction and offered a novel approach for catalysts in COF sandwich core-shell structures.

Abstract
Photocatalytic water splitting into H2 is the most economic and environmentally friendly strategy for H2 production, and rationally constructing a heterojunction retains enormous influence on a photocatalytic system. Herein, 2D/2D covalent organic framework/graphitic carbon nitride (COF/CN) van der Waals heterojunctions were readily prepared via an ultrasonic method for high-efficiency visible-light photocatalytic H2 production. The photocatalytic H2 production performance of optimized COF/CN composites can reach up to 449.64 μmol·h-1, which is approximately 5 times that of pure CN (89.08 μmol·h-1). The characterization and experimental studies reveal that the synergistic effect between COF and CN contributes to promoting the interfacial migration and spatial separation of photoinduced e--h+ pairs, further boosting the photocatalytic hydrogen production activity. This work may open a new window to design and fabricate effective heterojunction photocatalysts for photocatalytic energy conversion.

Abstract
The sustainable rise in global warming and the consumption of fossil fuels considerably contribute to energy and environmental issues. To address these issues, semiconductor heterostructures can be used to generate clean energy sources as alternative energy sources and to reduce environmental impacts. Herein, we report the synthesis of a ternary semiconductor of the CdS/WO3/g-C3N4 (i.e. C-CNW) nanostructured composite for hydrogen production and dye degradation under visible-light irradiation. The structural properties of the prepared materials were studied using a series of investigational analyses. The 3C-CNW nanostructure photocatalyst exhibited faster malachite green (MG) dye photodegradation within 105 min and the highest hydrogen production rate is 868.23 μmol g-1 h-1 under visible light illumination. Moreover, the photocatalytic hydrogen production of the 3C-CNW nanostructure photocatalyst with various scavengers was analyzed. Its higher photocatalytic activity is ascribed to the Z-scheme mechanism, which induces rapid diffusion of photoinduced charges within the ternary photocatalyst with its optical bandgap. This proposed strategy is useful to improve photocatalysts that play a role in mitigating energy and environmental issues.

Abstract
The application of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) in photocatalytic NO oxidation was limited due to severe recombination of photogenerated carriers and low concentration of oxidizing species. In this work, K and B were introduced into the interlayer and in-plane framework of g-C3N4 to address this challenge through the thermal polymerization process. The synthesized K-doped B-g-C3N4 nanosheets exhibited expanded light absorption and low charge recombination efficiency. In addition, the doping of K and B reduced the band gap of g-C3N4, which corresponded to enhanced light absorption. B was introduced into the in-plane structure by replacing C atoms, which adjusted the in-plane electron distribution. K was inserted into the interlayer by binding to the N and C atoms of adjacent layers. K-derived electron transfer channels were constructed, which increased electron delocalization and expanded the π-conjugate system. More electrons were transferred through the interlayer channels and were involved in the reaction process. The severe carrier recombination and weak transfer were improved due to the synergistic effect of K and B doping. K-doped B-g-C3N4 nanosheets exhibited enhanced generation of superoxide radicals and hydroxyl radicals, which played a key role during NO oxidation. The photocatalytic NO oxidation efficiency of codoped g-C3N4 nanosheets reached 61%, which was 2.1 and 1.2 times of that of pristine g-C3N4 and B-doped g-C3N4, respectively. The codoped g-C3N4 sample still exhibited stable photocatalytic NO oxidation efficiency after five cycles. This result provided a potential idea for improving the charge distribution and transfer of layered materials by codoping metallic and nonmetallic elements and for photocatalytic NO oxidation.

Abstract
The ever-growing modern industry promotes the evolution of gas sensors for environmental monitoring and safety inspection. However, traditional chemiresistive gas sensors still suffer from drawbacks of high power consumption and detection limit, mainly due to the insufficient charge-transfer ability of gas-sensing materials. Here, an optoelectronic gas sensor that can detect ppb-level ammonia at room temperature is constructed based on core-shell g-C3N4@WO3 heterocomposites. The growth of WO3 nanosheets on graphitic g-C3N4 nanosheets was precisely controlled, achieving well-defined g-C3N4@WO3 core-shell architectures. Based on the synergism between light activation and the amplification effect of in situ-formed heterojunctions, the g-C3N4@WO3 sensor exhibits improved sensing characteristics for reliable ammonia detection. As compared with the pristine g-C3N4 sensor, the sensor response toward ammonia is enhanced 21 times and the detection limit is reduced from 308 to 108 ppb. This work provides a successful approach for the in situ formation of core-shell g-C3N4@WO3 interfacial composites and offers an easy solution for the rational design of advanced optoelectronic gas sensors.

Abstract
The efficient removal of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in natural waters is vital for human survival and sustainable development. Photocatalytic degradation is a feasible and cost-effective strategy to completely disintegrate POPs at room temperature. Herein, we develop a series of direct Z-scheme BiOIO3/AgIO3 hybrid photocatalysts via a facile deposition-precipitation method. Under natural sunlight irradiation, the light intensity of which is ∼40 mW/cm2, a considerable rate constant of 0.185 min-1 for photodecomposing 40 mg/L MO is obtained over 0.5 g/L Bi@Ag-5 composite photocatalyst powder, about 92.5 and 5.3 times higher than those of pristine AgIO3 and BiOIO3. The photoactivity of Bi@Ag-5 for photodecomposing MO under natural sunlight illumination surpasses most of the reported photocatalysts under Xe lamp illumination. After natural sunlight irradiation for 20 min, 95% of MO, 82% of phenol, 78% of 2,4-DCP, 54% of ofloxacin, and 88% of tetracycline hydrochloride can be photodecomposed over Bi@Ag-5. Relative to the commercial photocatalyst TiO2 (P25), Bi@Ag-5 exhibits greatly higher photoactivity for the treatment of MO-phenol-tetracycline hydrochloride mixture pollutants in the scale-up experiment of 500 mL of solution, decreasing COD, TOC, and chromaticity value by 52, 19, and 76%, respectively, after natural sunlight irradiation for 40 min. The photodegradation process and mechanism of MO have been systematically investigated and proposed. This work provides an archetype for designing efficient photocatalysts to remove POPs.

Abstract
There has been a dire need for the exploration of renewable clean hydrogen energy recourses in recent years. In this work, we investigated the photocatalytic hydrogen production of heterostructured Ti3C2/TiO2/rGO composites. Ti3C2/TiO2/rGO heterojunction nanocomposites were synthesized using two-step calcination and hydrothermal methods, and the optimum in situ growth ratio of TiO2 of 71.8% (nTi-O/nTi) and rGO mass ratio (mRGO/mTiO2/mTi3C2) of 12% were obtained. The target photocatalyst presented an outperforming photocatalytic hydrogen production performance of 1671.85 μmol·g-1 hydrogen production capacity in 4 h, with the maximum hydrogen production rate of 808.11 μmol·g-1·h-1 in the first hour being 3.08 times the maximum hydrogen production rate of bare TiO2 (262.66 μmol·g-1·h-1). The excellent hydrogen production performance was due to the formed rutile TiO2 and the constructed heterojunction of Ti3C2/TiO2/rGO, where rGO provided different electron transport channels, and made charge transfer easier, and restrained the recombination efficiency of electrons and holes.

Abstract
The enhancement of photogenerated carrier separation efficiency is a significant factor in the improvement of photocatalyst performance in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Heteroatom doping and defect construction have been considered valid methods to boost the photocatalytic activity of graphitic carbon nitride. Herein, we report graphitic carbon nitride modified with P doping and N defects (PCNx), and the effects of doping and defects were investigated in photocatalytic H2 evolution. Its hydrogen evolution rate can reach up to about 59.1 μmol h-1, which is more than 123.1 times higher than pristine graphitic carbon nitride under visible light irradiation. Importantly, the apparent quantum efficiency reaches 8.73% at 420 nm. The excellent performance of the PCNx photocatalyst was attributed to the following aspects: (I) the large BET surface area of PCNx affords more active sites for H2 production and (II) the introduction of P and N defects can accelerate the charge carrier separation and transfer efficiency, leading to more efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production. The photocatalyst showed obviously enhanced activities.
