Catalytic Conversion of CO2 over Atomically Precise Gold-Based Cluster Catalysts

Recent progress in atomically precise metal nanoclusters for photocatalytic application

Photocatalysis is a widely recognized green and sustainable technology that can harness inexhaustible solar energy to carry out chemical reactions, offering the opportunity to mitigate environmental issues and the energy crisis. Photocatalysts with wide spectral response and rapid charge transfer capability are crucial for highly efficient photocatalytic activity. Atomically precise metal nanoclusters (NCs), an emerging atomic-level material, have attracted great interests owing to their ultrasmall size, unique atomic stacking, abundant surface active sites, and quantum confinement effect. In particular, the molecule-like discrete electronic energy level endows them with small-band-gap semiconductor behavior, which allows for photoexcitation in order to generate electrons and holes to participate in the photoredox reaction. In addition, metal NCs exhibit strong light-harvesting ability in the wide spectral UV-near IR region, and the diversity of optical absorption properties can be precisely regulated by the composition and structure. These merits make metal NCs ideal candidates for photocatalysis. In this review, the recent advances in atomically-precise metal NCs for photocatalytic application are summarized, including photocatalytic water splitting, CO2 reduction, organic transformation, photoelectrocatalytic reactions, N2 fixation and H2O2 production. In addition, the strategy for promoting photostability, charge transfer and separation efficiency of metal NCs is highlighted. Finally, a perspective on the challenges and opportunities for NCs-based photocatalysts is provided.

Atomically Precise Nanometer-Sized Pt Catalysts with an Additional Photothermy Functionality

Atomically precise ~1-nm Pt nanoparticles (nanoclusters, NCs) with ambient stability are important in fundamental research and exhibit diverse practical applications (catalysis, biomedicine, etc.). However, synthesizing such materials is challenging. Herein, by employing the mixture ligand protecting strategy, we successfully synthesized the largest organic-ligand-protected (~1-nm) Pt23 NCs precisely characterized with mass spectrometry and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. Interestingly, natural population analysis and Bader charge calculation indicate an alternate, varying charge -layer distribution in the sandwich-like Pt23 NC kernel. Pt23 NCs can catalyze the oxygen reduction reaction under acidic conditions without requiring calcination and other treatments, and the resulting specific and mass activities without further treatment are sevenfold and eightfold higher than those observed for commercial Pt/C catalysts, respectively. Density functional theory and d-band center calculations interpret the high activity. Furthermore, Pt23 NCs exhibit a photothermal conversion efficiency of 68.4 % under 532-nm laser irradiation and can be used at least for six cycles, thus demonstrating great potential for practical applications.

Diachronic evolvement from tetra-icosahedral to quasi-hexagonal close-packed bimetal clusters

Here we report a diachronic evolvement from tetra-icosahedral Au30Ag12(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CR)24 to quasi-hcp (hexagonal close-packed) Au47Ag19(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CR)32 via a one-step reduction, in which the size/structure conversion of the two clusters is not a typical Oswald growth process, but involves interface shrinking followed by core rearrangement and surface polymerization. Au30Ag12(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CR)24 has an aesthetic Au18Ag8 kernel that is composed of four interpenetrating Au10Ag3 icosahedra, while Au47Ag19(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CR)32 has a twisted Au19 core capped by a Au12Ag19 shell that are stacked in a layer-by-layer manner with a quasi-hcp pattern. The discovery of the two clusters not only provides further evidence for icosahedral clusters with longer excited-state lifetime compared to hcp-like clusters, but also discloses a double increase in catalytic reactivity for electrocatalytic oxidation of ethanol over quasi-hcp clusters in comparison with icosahedral clusters. This work provides the rationale for reversing the bottom-up growth process to remake bimetal clusters.

Ag1+ incorporation via a Zr4+-anchored metalloligand: fine-tuning catalytic Ag sites in Zr/Ag bimetallic clusters for enhanced eCO2RR-to-CO activity

Attaining meticulous dominion over the binding milieu of catalytic metal sites remains an indispensable pursuit to tailor product selectivity and elevate catalytic activity. By harnessing the distinctive attributes of a Zr4+-anchored thiacalix[4]arene (TC4A) metalloligand, we have pioneered a methodology for incorporating catalytic Ag1+ sites, resulting in the first Zr-Ag bimetallic cluster, Zr2Ag7, which unveils a dualistic configuration embodying twin {ZrAg3(TC4A)2} substructures linked by an {AgSal} moiety. This cluster unveils a trinity of discrete Ag sites: a pair ensconced within {ZrAg3(TC4A)2} subunits and one located between two units. Expanding the purview, we have also crafted ZrAg3 and Zr2Ag2 clusters, meticulously mimicking the two Ag site environment inherent in the {ZrAg3(TC4A)2} monomer. The distinct structural profiles of Zr2Ag7, ZrAg3, and Zr2Ag provide an exquisite foundation for a precise comparative appraisal of catalytic prowess across three Ag sites intrinsic to Zr2Ag7. Remarkably, Zr2Ag7 eclipses its counterparts in the electroreduction of CO2, culminating in a CO faradaic efficiency (FECO) of 90.23% at -0.9 V. This achievement markedly surpasses the performance metrics of ZrAg3 (FECO: 55.45% at -1.0 V) and Zr2Ag2 (FECO: 13.09% at -1.0 V). Utilizing in situ ATR-FTIR, we can observe reaction intermediates on the Ag sites. To unveil underlying mechanisms, we employ density functional theory (DFT) calculations to determine changes in free energy accompanying each elementary step throughout the conversion of CO2 to CO. Our findings reveal the exceptional proficiency of the bridged-Ag site that interconnects paired {ZrAg3(TC4A)2} units, skillfully stabilizing *COOH intermediates, surpassing the stabilization efficacy of the other Ag sites located elsewhere. The invaluable insights gleaned from this pioneering endeavor lay a novel course for the design of exceptionally efficient catalysts tailored for CO2 reduction reactions, emphatically underscoring novel vistas this research unshrouds.

Crystal Engineering of MOF-Derived Bimetallic Oxide Solid Solution Anchored with Au Nanoparticles for Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction to Syngas and C2 Hydrocarbons

Considering that CO2 reduction is mostly a multielectron reaction, it is necessary for the photocatalysts to integrate multiple catalytic sites and cooperate synergistically to achieve efficient photocatalytic CO2 reduction to various products, such as C2 hydrocarbons. Herein, through crystal engineering, we designed and constructed a metal-organic framework-derived Zr/Ti bimetallic oxide solid solution support, which was confirmed by X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. After anchoring Au nanoparticles, the composite photocatalyst exhibited excellent performances toward photocatalytic CO2 reduction to syngas (H2 and CO production rates of 271.6 and 260.6 μmol g-1 h-1) and even C2 hydrocarbons (C2H4 and C2H6 production rates of 6.80 and 4.05 μmol g-1 h-1). According to the control experiments and theoretical calculations, the strong interaction between bimetallic oxide solid solution support and Au nanoparticles was found to be beneficial for binding intermediates and reducing CO2 reduction, highlighting the synergy effect of the catalytic system with multiple active sites.

Stepwise structural evolution toward robust carboranealkynyl-protected copper nanocluster catalysts for nitrate electroreduction

Atomically precise metal nanoclusters (NCs) are emerging as idealized model catalysts for imprecise metal nanoparticles to unveil their structure-activity relationship. However, the directional synthesis of robust metal NCs with accessible catalytic active sites remains a great challenge. In this work, we achieved bulky carboranealkynyl-protected copper NCs, the monomer Cu13·3PF6 and nido-carboranealkynyl bridged dimer Cu26·4PF6, with fair stability as well as accessible open metal sites step by step through external ligand shell modification and metal-core evolution. Both Cu13·3PF6 and Cu26·4PF6 demonstrate remarkable catalytic activity and selectivity in electrocatalytic nitrate (NO3-) reduction to NH3 reaction, with the dimer Cu26·4PF6 displaying superior performance. The mechanism of this catalytic reaction was elucidated through theoretical computations in conjunction with in situ FTIR spectra. This study not only provides strategies for accessing desired copper NC catalysts but also establishes a platform to uncover the structure-activity relationship of copper NCs.

Enzyme-mimic catalytic activities and biomedical applications of noble metal nanoclusters

Noble metal (e.g., Au and Ag) nanoclusters (NCs), which exhibit structural complexity and hierarchy comparable to those of natural proteins, have been increasingly pursued in artificial enzyme research. The protein-like structure of metal NCs not only ensures enzyme-mimic catalytic activity, including peroxidase-, catalase-, and superoxide dismutase-mimic activities, but also affords an unprecedented opportunity to correlate the catalytic performance with the cluster structure at the molecular or atomic levels. In this review, we aim to summarize the recent progress in programming and demystify the enzyme-mimic catalytic activity of metal NCs, presenting the state-of-the-art understandings of the structure-property relationship of metal NC-based artificial enzymes. By leveraging on a concise anatomy of the hierarchical structure of noble metal NCs, we manage to unravel the structural origin of the catalytic performance of metal NCs. Noteworthily, it has been proven that the surface ligands and metal-ligand interface of metal NCs are instrumental in influencing enzyme-mimic catalytic activities. In addition to the structure-property correlation, we also discuss the synthetic methodologies feasible to tailoring the cluster structure at the atomic level. Prior to the closure of this review with our perspectives in noble metal NC-based artificial enzymes, we also exemplify the biomedical applications based on the enzyme-mimic catalysis of metal NCs with the theranostics of kidney injury, brain inflammation, and tumors. The fundamental and methodological advancements delineated in this review would be conducive to further development of metal NCs as an alternative family of artificial enzymes.

Tuning Electrocatalytic Water Oxidation Activity: Insights from the Active-Site Distance in LnCu6 Clusters

Atomically precise metal clusters serve as a unique model for unraveling the intricate mechanism of the catalytic reaction and exploring the complex relationship between structure and activity. Herein, three series of water-soluble heterometallic clusters LnCu6, abbreviated as LnCu6-AC (Ln = La, Nd, Gd, Er, Yb; HAC = acetic acid), LnCu6-IM (Ln = La and Nd; IM = Imidazole), and LnCu6-IDA (Ln = Nd; H2IDA = Iminodiacetic acid) are presented, each featuring a uniform metallic core stabilized by distinct protected ligands. Crystal structure analysis reveals a triangular prism topology formed by six Cu2+ ions around one Ln3+ ion in LnCu6, with variations in Cu···Cu distances attributed to different ligands. Electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) shows that these different LnCu6 clusters exhibit different OER activities with remarkable turnover frequency of 135 s-1 for NdCu6-AC, 79 s-1 for NdCu6-IM and 32 s-1 for NdCu6-IDA. Structural analysis and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations underscore the correlation between shorter Cu···Cu distances and improves OER catalytic activity, emphasizing the pivotal role of active-site distance in regulating electrocatalytic OER activities. These results provide valuable insights into the OER mechanism and contribute to the design of efficient homogeneous OER electrocatalysts.

Stable mass-selected AuTiOx nanoparticles for CO oxidation

Stability under reactive conditions poses a common challenge for cluster- and nanoparticle-based catalysts. Since the catalytic properties of <5 nm gold nanoparticles were first uncovered, optimizing their stability at elevated temperatures for CO oxidation has been a central theme. Here we report direct observations of improved stability of AuTiOx alloy nanoparticles for CO oxidation compared with pure Au nanoparticles on TiO2. The nanoparticles were synthesized using a magnetron sputtering, gas-phase aggregation cluster source, size-selected using a lateral time-of-flight mass filter and deposited onto TiO2-coated micro-reactors for thermocatalytic activity measurements of CO oxidation. The AuTiOx nanoparticles exhibited improved stability at elevated temperatures, which is attributed to a self-anchoring interaction with the TiO2 substrate. The structure of the AuTiOx nanoparticles was also investigated in detail using ion scattering spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The measurements showed that the alloyed nanoparticles exhibited a core-shell structure with an Au core surrounded by an AuTiOx shell. The structure of these alloy nanoparticles appeared stable even at temperatures up to 320 °C under reactive conditions, for more than 140 hours. The work presented confirms the possibility of tuning catalytic activity and stability via nanoparticle alloying and self-anchoring on TiO2 substrates, and highlights the importance of complementary characterization techniques to investigate and optimize nanoparticle catalyst designs of this nature.

Atomically precise Au and Ag nanoclusters doped with a single atom as model alloy catalysts

Gold and silver nanoclusters (NCs) composed of <200 atoms are novel catalysts because their catalytic properties differ significantly from those of the corresponding bulk surface and can be dramatically tuned by the size (number of atoms). Doping with other metals is a promising approach for improving the catalytic performance of Au and Ag NCs. However, elucidation of the origin of the doping effects and optimization of the catalytic performance are hampered by the technical challenge of controlling the number and location of the dopants. In this regard, atomically precise Au or Ag (Au/Ag) NCs protected by ligands or polymers have recently emerged as an ideal platform because they allow regioselective substitution of single Au/Ag constituent atoms while retaining the size and morphology of the NC. Heterogeneous Au/Ag NC catalysts doped with a single atom can also be prepared by controlled calcination of ligand-protected NCs on solid supports. Comparison of thermal catalysis, electrocatalysis, and photocatalysis between the single-atom-doped and undoped Au/Ag NCs has revealed that the single-atom doping effect can be attributed to an electronic or geometric origin, depending on the dopant element and position. This minireview summarizes the recent progress of the synthesis and catalytic application of single-atom-doped, atomically precise Au/Ag NC catalysts and provides future prospects for the rational development of active and selective metal NC catalysts.

Aluminium-Based Metal-Organic Framework Nano Cuboids and Nanoflakes with Embedded Gold Nanoparticles for Carbon Dioxide Fixation with Epoxides into Cyclic Esters

The fixation of carbon dioxide with epoxides is one of the most attractive methods for the green utilisation of this greenhouse gas and leads to many valuable chemicals. This process is characterised by 100% atom efficiency; however, an efficient catalyst is required to achieve satisfactory yields. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are recognised as being extremely promising for this purpose. Nevertheless, many of the proposed catalysts are based on ions of rare elements or elements not entirely safe for the environment; this is notable with commercially unavailable ligands. In an effort to develop novel catalysts for CO2 fixation on an industrial scale, we propose novel MOFs, which consist of aluminium ions coordinated with commercially available 1,4-naphthalene dicarboxylic acid (Al@NDC) and their nanocomposites with gold nanoparticles entrapped inside their structure (AlAu@NDC). Due to the application of 4-amino triazole and 5-amino tetrazole as crystallization mediators, the morphology of the synthesised materials can be modified. The introduction of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) into the structure of the synthesised Al-based MOFs causes the change in morphology from nano cuboids to nanoflakes, simultaneously decreasing their porosity. However, the homogeneity of the nanostructures in the system is preserved. All synthesised MOF materials are highly crystalline, and the simulation of PXRD patterns suggests the same tetragonal crystallographic system for all fabricated nanomaterials. The fabricated materials are proven to be highly efficient catalysts for carbon dioxide cycloaddition with a series of model epoxides: epichlorohydrin; glycidol; styrene oxide; and propylene oxide. Applying the synthesised catalysts enables the reactions to be performed under mild conditions (90 °C; 1 MPa CO2) within a short time and with high conversion and yield (90% conversion of glycidol towards glycerol carbonate with 89% product yield within 2 h). The developed nanocatalysts can be easily separated from the reaction mixture and reused several times (both conversion and yield do not change after five cycles). The excellent performance of the fabricated catalytic materials might be explained by their high microporosity (from 421 m2 g-1 to 735 m2 g-1); many catalytic centres in the structure exhibit Lewis acids' behaviour, increased capacity for CO2 adsorption, and high stability. The presence of AuNPs in the synthesised nanocatalysts (0.8% w/w) enables the reaction to be performed with a higher yield within a shorter time; this is especially important for less-active epoxides such as propylene oxide (two times higher yield was obtained using a nanocomposite, in comparison with Al-MOF without nanoparticles).

Underlying mechanisms of gold nanoalloys stabilization

Gold nanoclusters have attracted significant attention due to their unique physical-chemical properties, which can be tuned by alloying with elements such as Cu, Pd, Ag, and Pt to design materials for various applications. Although Au-nanoalloys have promising applications, our atomistic understanding of the descriptors that drive their stability is far from satisfactory. To address this problem, we considered 55-atom model nanoalloys that have been synthesized by experimental techniques. Here, we combined data mining techniques for creating a large sample of representative configurations, density functional theory for performing total energy optimizations, and Spearman correlation analyses to identify the most important descriptors. Among our results, we have identified trends in core-shell formation in the AuCu and AuPd systems and an onion-like design in the AuAg system, characterized by the aggregation of gold atoms on nanocluster surfaces. These features are explained by Au's surface energy, packing efficiency, and charge transfer mechanisms, which are enhanced by the alloys' preference for adopting the structure of the alloying metal rather than the low-symmetry one presented by Au55. These generalizations provide insights into the interplay between electronic and structural properties in gold nanoalloys, contributing to the understanding of their stabilization mechanisms and potential applications in various fields.

Precision nanoengineering for functional self-assemblies across length scales

As nanotechnology continues to push the boundaries across disciplines, there is an increasing need for engineering nanomaterials with atomic-level precision for self-assembly across length scales, i.e., from the nanoscale to the macroscale. Although molecular self-assembly allows atomic precision, extending it beyond certain length scales presents a challenge. Therefore, the attention has turned to size and shape-controlled metal nanoparticles as building blocks for multifunctional colloidal self-assemblies. However, traditionally, metal nanoparticles suffer from polydispersity, uncontrolled aggregation, and inhomogeneous ligand distribution, resulting in heterogeneous end products. In this feature article, I will discuss how virus capsids provide clues for designing subunit-based, precise, efficient, and error-free self-assembly of colloidal molecules. The atomically precise nanoscale proteinic subunits of capsids display rigidity (conformational and structural) and patchy distribution of interacting sites. Recent experimental evidence suggests that atomically precise noble metal nanoclusters display an anisotropic distribution of ligands and patchy ligand bundles. This enables symmetry breaking, consequently offering a facile route for two-dimensional colloidal crystals, bilayers, and elastic monolayer membranes. Furthermore, inter-nanocluster interactions mediated via the ligand functional groups are versatile, offering routes for discrete supracolloidal capsids, composite cages, toroids, and macroscopic hierarchically porous frameworks. Therefore, engineered nanoparticles with atomically precise structures have the potential to overcome the limitations of molecular self-assembly and large colloidal particles. Self-assembly allows the emergence of new optical properties, mechanical strength, photothermal stability, catalytic efficiency, quantum yield, and biological properties. The self-assembled structures allow reproducible optoelectronic properties, mechanical performance, and accurate sensing. More importantly, the intrinsic properties of individual nanoclusters are retained across length scales. The atomically precise nanoparticles offer enormous potential for next-generation functional materials, optoelectronics, precision sensors, and photonic devices.

One-step preparation of Pt/Ag nanoclusters for CO2 transformation

Structurally precise metal nanoclusters with a facile synthetic process and high catalytic performance have been long pursued. These atomically precise nanocatalysts are regarded as model systems to study structure-performance relationships, surface coordination chemistry, and the reaction mechanism of heterogeneous metal catalysts. Nevertheless, the research on silver-based nanoclusters for driving chemical transformations is sluggish in comparison to gold counterparts. Herein, we report the one-step synthesis of Pt/Ag alloy nanoclusters of [PtAg9(C18H12Br3P)7Cl3](C18H12Br3P), which are highly active in catalysing cycloaddition reactions of CO2 and epoxides. The cluster was obtained in a rather simple way with the reduction of silver and platinum salts in the presence of ligands in one pot. The molecular structure of the titled cluster describes the protection of the Pt-centred Ag9 crown by the shell of phosphine ligands and halides. Its electronic structure, as revealed by density function theoretical calculations, adopts a superatomic geometry with 1S21P6 configuration. Interestingly, the cluster displays high activity in the formation of cyclic carbonates from CO2 under mind conditions.

Multimethod Approach to the Low-Overpotential Region of Micro- to Macro-Scale Working Electrodes of Sub-10 nm Gold Nanoparticles in the CO2 Reduction Reaction

The electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) over carbon-supported gold nanoparticles (AuNP) was investigated using a broad variety of (electro)analytical methods, including linear sweep voltammetry with a rotating disk electrode (LSV-RDE), sample-generation tip-collection mode of scanning electrochemical microscopy (SG/TC-SECM), as well as full cell tests with highly sensitive online gas chromatography (GC). In contrast to most other studies, this work focuses on the low-overpotential region (0 to -0.4 V vs RHE) where initial product formation is already detected and addresses micro- to macro-sized electrodes. The sub-10 nm AuNPs supported on three different carbon supports (CNTs and carbon blacks) were pretreated in H2/Ar to remove the stabilizer used during AuNP synthesis. LSV-RDE points toward different CO2RR mechanisms at the samples, additionally confirmed by the SG/TC-SECM and full cell tests with online GC. Besides H2 and CO, the AuNP supported on carbon nanotubes showed significant evolution of H2CO in contrast to the other two samples, which was additionally confirmed by accumulating the product during chronoamperometric RDE experiments followed by mass spectroscopic analysis. Surface analysis indicated a complete removal of residual thiolate stabilizer molecules exclusively at the AuNPs supported on carbon nanotubes, which may result in a change in the adsorption geometry or reaction mechanism at this sample. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the combination of these multiple methods to investigate the CO2RR in the low-overpotential region.

Elucidation of the electronic structures of thiolate-protected gold nanoclusters by electrochemical measurements

Metal nanoclusters (NCs) with sizes of approximately 2 nm or less have different physical/chemical properties from those of the bulk metals owing to quantum size effects. Metal NCs, which can be size-controlled and heterometal doped at atomic accuracy, are expected to be the next generation of important materials, and new metal NCs are reported regularly. However, compared with conventional materials such as metal complexes and relatively large metal nanoparticles (>2 nm), these metal NCs are still underdeveloped in terms of evaluation and establishment of application methods. Electrochemical measurements are one of the most widely used methods for synthesis, application, and characterisation of metal NCs. This review summarizes the basic knowledge of the electrochemistry and experimental techniques, and provides examples of the reported electronic states of thiolate-protected gold NCs elucidated by electrochemical approaches. It is expected that this review will provide useful information for researchers starting to study metal NCs.

Hydride-doped Ag17Cu10 nanoclusters as high-performance electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction

The atomically precise metal electrocatalysts for driving CO2 reduction reactions are eagerly pursued as they are model systems to identify the active sites, understand the reaction mechanism, and further guide the exploration of efficient and practical metal nanocatalysts. Reported herein is a nanocluster-based electrocatalyst for CO2 reduction, which features a clear geometric and electronic structure, and more importantly excellent performance. The nanocatalysts with the molecular formula of [Ag17Cu10(dppm)4(PhC≡C)20H4]3+ have been obtained in a facile way. The unique metal framework of the cluster, with silver, copper, and hydride included, and dedicated surface structure, with strong (dppm) and labile (alkynyl) ligands coordinated, endow the cluster with excellent performance in electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction to CO. With the atomically precise electrocatalysts in hand, not only high reactivity and selectivity (Faradaic efficiency for CO up to 91.6%) but also long-term stability (24 h), are achieved.

Atomically Precise Copper Nanoclusters for Highly Efficient Electroreduction of CO2 towards Hydrocarbons via Breaking the Coordination Symmetry of Cu Site

We propose an effective highest occupied d-orbital modulation strategy engendered by breaking the coordination symmetry of sites in the atomically precise Cu nanocluster (NC) to switch the product of CO2 electroreduction from HCOOH/CO to higher-valued hydrocarbons. An atomically well-defined Cu6 NC with symmetry-broken Cu-S2 N1 active sites (named Cu6 (MBD)6 , MBD=2-mercaptobenzimidazole) was designed and synthesized by a judicious choice of ligand containing both S and N coordination atoms. Different from the previously reported high HCOOH selectivity of Cu NCs with Cu-S3 sites, the Cu6 (MBD)6 with Cu-S2 N1 coordination structure shows a high Faradaic efficiency toward hydrocarbons of 65.5 % at -1.4 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (including 42.5 % CH4 and 23 % C2 H4 ), with the hydrocarbons partial current density of -183.4 mA cm-2 . Theoretical calculations reveal that the symmetry-broken Cu-S2 N1 sites can rearrange the Cu 3d orbitals withd x 2 - y 2 ${d_{x^2 - y^2 } }$ as the highest occupied d-orbital, thus favoring the generation of key intermediate *COOH instead of *OCHO to favor *CO formation, followed by hydrogenation and/or C-C coupling to produce hydrocarbons. This is the first attempt to regulate the coordination mode of Cu atom in Cu NCs for hydrocarbons generation, and provides new inspiration for designing atomically precise NCs for efficient CO2 RR towards highly-valued products.

Evolution of Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction Activity Induced by Charge Segregation in Atomically Precise AuAg Nanoclusters Based on Icosahedral M13 Unit 3D Assembly

The precise self-assembly of building blocks at atomic level provides the opportunity to achieve clusters with advanced catalytic properties. However, most of the current self-assembled materials are fabricated by 1/2D assembly of blocks. High dimensional (that is, 3D) assembly is widely believed to improve the performance of cluster. Herein, the effect of 3D assembly on the activity for electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2 RR) is investigated by using a range of clusters (Au8 Ag55 , Au8 Ag57 , Au12 Ag60 ) based on 3D assembly of M13 unit as models. Although three clusters have almost the same sizes and geometric structures, Au8 Ag55 exhibits the best CO2 RR performance due to the strong CO2 adsorption capacity and effective inhibition of H2 evolution competition reaction. The deep insight into the superior activity of Au8 Ag55 is the unique electronic structure attributed to the charge segregation. This study not only demonstrates that the assembly mode greatly affects the catalytic activity, but also offers an idea for rational designing and precisely constructing catalysts with controllable activities.

Programmable kernel structures of atomically precise metal nanoclusters for tailoring catalytic properties

The unclear structures and polydispersity of metal nanoparticles (NPs) seriously hamper the identification of the active sites and the construction of structure-reactivity relationships. Fortunately, ligand-protected metal nanoclusters (NCs) with atomically precise structures and monodispersity have become an ideal candidate for understanding the well-defined correlations between structure and catalytic property at an atomic level. The programmable kernel structures of atomically precise metal NCs provide a fantastic chance to modulate their size, shape, atomic arrangement, and electron state by the precise modulating of the number, type, and location of metal atoms. Thus, the special focus of this review highlights the most recent process in tailoring the catalytic activity and selectivity over metal NCs by precisely controlling their kernel structures. This review is expected to shed light on the in-depth understanding of metal NCs' kernel structures and reactivity relationships.

Bimetallic Sites for Catalysis: From Binuclear Metal Sites to Bimetallic Nanoclusters and Nanoparticles

Heterogeneous bimetallic catalysts have broad applications in industrial processes, but achieving a fundamental understanding on the nature of the active sites in bimetallic catalysts at the atomic and molecular level is very challenging due to the structural complexity of the bimetallic catalysts. Comparing the structural features and the catalytic performances of different bimetallic entities will favor the formation of a unified understanding of the structure-reactivity relationships in heterogeneous bimetallic catalysts and thereby facilitate the upgrading of the current bimetallic catalysts. In this review, we will discuss the geometric and electronic structures of three representative types of bimetallic catalysts (bimetallic binuclear sites, bimetallic nanoclusters, and nanoparticles) and then summarize the synthesis methodologies and characterization techniques for different bimetallic entities, with emphasis on the recent progress made in the past decade. The catalytic applications of supported bimetallic binuclear sites, bimetallic nanoclusters, and nanoparticles for a series of important reactions are discussed. Finally, we will discuss the future research directions of catalysis based on supported bimetallic catalysts and, more generally, the prospective developments of heterogeneous catalysis in both fundamental research and practical applications.

Body-Centered-Cubic-Kernelled Ag15Cu6 Nanocluster with Alkynyl Protection: Synthesis, Total Structure, and CO2 Electroreduction

While atomically monodisperse nanostructured materials are highly desirable to unravel the size- and structure-catalysis relationships, their controlled synthesis and the atomic-level structure determination pose challenges. Particularly, copper-containing atomically precise alloy nanoclusters are potential catalyst candidates for the electrochemical CO₂ reduction reaction (eCO₂RR) due to high abundance and tunable catalytic activity of copper. Herein, we report the synthesis and total structure of an alkynyl-protected 21-atom AgCu alloy nanocluster [Ag₁₅Cu₆(C≡CR)₁₈(DPPE)₂]^-, denoted as Ag₁₅Cu₆ (HC≡CR: 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenylacetylene; DPPE: 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane). The single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that Ag₁₅Cu₆ consists of an Ag₁₁Cu₄ metal core exhibiting a body-centered cubic (bcc) structure, which is capped by 2 Cu atoms, 2 Ag₂DPPE motifs, and 18 alkynyl ligands. Interestingly, the Ag₁₅Cu₆ cluster exhibits excellent catalytic activity for eCO₂RR with a CO faradaic efficiency (FE_CO) of 91.3% at -0.81 V (vs the reversible hydrogen electrode, RHE), which is much higher than that (FE_CO: 48.5% at -0.89 V vs RHE) of Ag₉Cu₆ with bcc structure. Furthermore, Ag₁₅Cu₆ shows superior stability with no significant decay in the current density and FE_CO during a long-term operation of 145 h. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the de-ligated Ag₁₅Cu₆ cluster can expose more space at the pair of AgCu dual metals as the efficient active sites for CO formation.

Biofuels and Nanocatalysts: Python Boosting Visualization of Similarities

Among the most relevant themes of modernity, using renewable resources to produce biofuels attracts several countries' attention, constituting a vital part of the global geopolitical chessboard since humanity's energy needs will grow faster and faster. Fortunately, advances in personal computing associated with free and open-source software production facilitate this work of prospecting and understanding complex scenarios. Thus, for the development of this work, the keywords "biofuel" and "nanocatalyst" were delivered to the Scopus database, which returned 1071 scientific articles. The titles and abstracts of these papers were saved in Research Information Systems (RIS) format and submitted to automatic analysis via the Visualization of Similarities Method implemented in VOSviewer 1.6.18 software. Then, the data extracted from the VOSviewer were processed by software written in Python, which allowed the use of the network data generated by the Visualization of Similarities Method. Thus, it was possible to establish the relationships for the pair between the nodes of all clusters classified by Link Strength Between Items or Terms (LSBI) or by year. Indeed, other associations should arouse particular interest in the readers. However, here, the option was for a numerical criterion. However, all data are freely available, and stakeholders can infer other specific connections directly. Therefore, this innovative approach allowed inferring that the most recent pairs of terms associate the need to produce biofuels from microorganisms' oils besides cerium oxide nanoparticles to improve the performance of fuel mixtures by reducing the emission of hydrocarbons (HC) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx).

Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction over Atomically Precise Metal Nanoclusters Protected by Organic Ligands

The electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO₂RR) is a promising method to realize carbon recycling and sustainable development because of its mild reaction conditions and capability to utilize the electric power generated by renewable energy such as solar, wind, or tidal energy to produce high-value-added liquid fuels and chemicals. However, it is still a great challenge to deeply understand the reaction mechanism of CO₂RRs involving multiple chemical processes and multiple products due to the complexity of the traditional catalyst's surface. Organic ligand-protected metal nanoclusters (NCs) with accurate compositions and definite atom packing structures show advantages for revealing the reaction mechanism of CO₂RRs. This Review focuses on the recent progress in CO₂RRs catalyzed by atomically precise metal NCs, including gold, copper, and silver NCs. Particularly, the influences of charge, ligand, surface structure, doping of Au NCs, and binders on the CO₂RR are discussed in detail. Meanwhile the reaction mechanisms of CO₂RRs including the active sites and the key reaction intermediates are also discussed. It is expected that progress in this research area could promote the development of metal NCs and CO₂RRs.
