Abstract
The development of efficient catalysts for the direct synthesis of higher alcohols (HA) via CO hydrogenation has remained a prominent research challenge. While modified Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (m-FTS) systems hold great potential, they often retain limited active site density under operating conditions for industrially relevant performance. Aimed at improving existing catalyst architectures, this study investigates the impact of highly dispersed metal oxides of Co-Cu, Cu-Fe, and Co-Fe m-FTS systems and demonstrates the viability of ZrO2 as a general promoter in the direct synthesis of HA from syngas. A volcano-like composition-performance relationship, in which 5-10 mol % ZrO2 resulted in maximal HA productivity, governs all catalyst families. The promotional effect resulted in a 2.5-fold increase in HA productivity for the optimized Cu1Co4@ZrO2-5 catalyst (Cu:Co = 1:4, 5 mol % ZrO2) compared to its ZrO2-free counterpart and placed Co1Fe4@ZrO2-10 among the most productive systems (345 mgHA h-1 gcat-1) reported in this category under comparable operating conditions, with stable performance for at least 300 h. ZrO2 assumes an amorphous and defective nature on the catalysts, leading to enhanced H2 and CO activation, facilitated formation of metallic and carbide phases, and structural stabilization.

Abstract
Efficient and more sustainable production of transportation fuels is key to fulfill the ever-increasing global demand. In order to achieve this, progress in the development of highly active and selective catalysts is fundamental. The combination of bimetallic nanoparticles and reactive support materials offers unique and complex interactions that can be exploited for improved catalyst performance. Here, we report on cobalt-nickel nanoparticles on reducible metal oxides as support material for enhanced performance in the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. For this, different cobalt to nickel ratios (Ni/(Ni + Co): 0.0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, or 1.0 atom/atom) supported on reducible (TiO2 and Nb2O5) or nonreducible (α-Al2O3) oxides were studied. At 1 bar, Co-Ni nanoparticles supported on TiO2 and Nb2O5 showed stable catalytic performance, high activities and remarkably high selectivities for long-chain hydrocarbons (C5+, ∼80 wt %). In contrast, catalysts supported on α-Al2O3 independently of the metal composition showed lower activities, high methane production, and considerable deactivation throughout the experiment. At 20 bar, the combination of cobalt and nickel supported on reducible oxides allowed for 25-50% cobalt substitution by nickel with increased Fischer-Tropsch activity and without sacrificing much C5+ selectivity. STEM-EDX and IR of adsorbed CO pointed to a cobalt enrichment of the nanoparticle's surface and a weaker adsorption of CO in Co-Ni supported on TiO2 and Nb2O5 and not on α-Al2O3, modifying the rate-determining step and the catalytic performance. Overall, we show the strong effect and potential of reducible metal oxides as support materials for bimetallic nanoparticles for enhanced catalytic performance.

Abstract
Long-chain alcohols synthesis (LAS, C5+OH) from syngas provides a promising route for the conversion of coal/biomass/natural gas into high-value chemicals. Cu-Fe binary catalysts, with the merits of cost effectiveness and high CO conversion, have attracted considerable attention. Here we report a nano-construct of a Fe5C2-Cu interfacial catalyst derived from Cu4Fe1Mg4-layered double hydroxide (Cu4Fe1Mg4-LDH) precursor, i.e., Fe5C2 clusters (~2 nm) are immobilized onto the surface of Cu nanoparticles (~25 nm). The interfacial catalyst exhibits a CO conversion of 53.2%, a selectivity of 14.8 mol% and a space time yield of 0.101 g gcat−1 h−1 for long-chain alcohols, with a surprisingly benign reaction pressure of 1 MPa. This catalytic performance, to the best of our knowledge, is comparable to the optimal level of Cu-Fe catalysts operated at much higher pressure (normally above 3 MPa). Long-chain alcohols synthesis from syngas conversion is a promising route for the production of high-value chemicals. Here the authors show that a heterogeneous Fe5C2/Cu catalyst derived from layered double hydroxides precursor exhibits excellent performance with a space time yield of 0.101 g gcat−1 h−1 at a low pressure of 1 MPa.

Abstract
Higher alcohols are important compounds with widespread applications in the chemical, pharmaceutical and energy sectors. Currently, they are mainly produced by sugar fermentation (ethanol and isobutanol) or hydration of petroleum-derived alkenes (heavier alcohols), but their direct synthesis from syngas (CO + H2) would comprise a more environmentally-friendly, versatile and economical alternative. Research efforts in this reaction, initiated in the 1930s, have fluctuated along with the oil price and have considerably increased in the last decade due to the interest to exploit shale gas and renewable resources to obtain the gaseous feedstock. Nevertheless, no catalytic system reported to date has performed sufficiently well to justify an industrial implementation. Since the design of an efficient catalyst would strongly benefit from the establishment of synthesis-structure-function relationships and a deeper understanding of the reaction mechanism, this review comprehensively overviews syngas-based higher alcohols synthesis in three main sections, highlighting the advances recently made and the challenges that remain open and stimulate upcoming research activities. The first part critically summarises the formulations and methods applied in the preparation of the four main classes of materials, i.e., Rh-based, Mo-based, modified Fischer-Tropsch and modified methanol synthesis catalysts. The second overviews the molecular-level insights derived from microkinetic and theoretical studies, drawing links to the mechanisms of Fischer-Tropsch and methanol syntheses. Finally, concepts proposed to improve the efficiency of reactors and separation units as well as to utilise CO2 and recycle side-products in the process are described in the third section.

Abstract
Whereas noble metal compounds have long been central in catalysis, Earth-abundant metal-based catalysts have in the same time remained undeveloped. Yet the efficacy of Earth-abundant metal catalysts was already shown at the very beginning of the 20th century with the Fe-catalyzed Haber-Bosch process of ammonia synthesis and later in the Fischer-Tropsch reaction. Nanoscience has revolutionized the world of catalysis since it was observed that very small Au nanoparticles (NPs) and other noble metal NPs are extraordinarily efficient. Therefore the development of Earth-abundant metals NPs is more recent, but it has appeared necessary due to their "greenness". This review highlights catalysis by NPs of Earth-abundant transition metals that include Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, early transition metals (Ti, V, Cr, Zr, Nb and W) and their nanocomposites with emphasis on basic principles and literature reported during the last 5 years. A very large spectrum of catalytic reactions has been successfully disclosed, and catalysis has been examined for each metal starting with zero-valent metal NPs followed by oxides and other nanocomposites. The last section highlights the catalytic activities of bi- and trimetallic NPs. Indeed this later family is very promising and simultaneously benefits from increased stability, efficiency and selectivity, compared to monometallic NPs, due to synergistic substrate activation.

Abstract
A general and enantioselective N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-catalyzed lactonization of simple enals and α-ketoesters has been discovered using a new ternary cooperative catalytic system. The highly selective annulation was achieved by using a combination of a chiral NHC, a hydrogen-bond donor, and a metal salt, facilitating self-assembly of the reactive partners. A proposed model for this new mode of NHC chiral relay catalysis is supported by experimental and computational mechanistic studies.

Tuning the catalytic CO hydrogenation to straight- and long-chain aldehydes/alcohols and olefins/paraffins. Nat Commun 2016; 7:13058. Abstract
The catalytic CO hydrogenation is one of the most versatile large-scale chemical syntheses leading to variable chemical feedstock. While traditionally mainly methanol and long-chain hydrocarbons are produced by CO hydrogenation, here we show that the same reaction can be tuned to produce long-chain n-aldehydes, 1-alcohols and olefins, as well as n-paraffins over potassium-promoted CoMn catalysts. The sum selectivity of aldehydes and alcohols is usually >50 wt% whereof up to ∼97% can be n-aldehydes. While the product slate contains ∼60% n-aldehydes at /pCO=0.5, a 65/35% slate of paraffins/alcohols is obtained at a ratio of 9. A linear Anderson–Schulz–Flory behaviour, independent of the /pCO ratio, is found for the sum of C4+ products. We advocate a synergistic interaction between a Mn5O8 oxide and a bulk Co2C phase, promoted by the presence of potassium, to be responsible for the unique product spectra in our studies. The catalytic CO hydrogenation traditionally produces mainly methanol and long-chain hydrocarbons. Here, the authors show that the same reaction can be tuned to produce long-chain n-aldehydes, 1-alcohols and olefins, as well as n-paraffins over potassium-promoted CoMn catalysts.
