Abstract
A highly enantioselective formal hydroformylation of vinyl arenes enabled by copper hydride (CuH) catalysis is reported. Key to the success of the method was the use of the mild Lewis acid zinc triflate to promote the formation of oxocarbenium electrophiles through the activation of diethoxymethyl acetate. Using the newly developed protocol, a broad range of vinyl arene substrates underwent efficient hydroacetalization reactions to provide access to highly enantioenriched α-aryl acetal products in good yields with exclusively branched regioselectivity. The acetal products could be converted to the corresponding aldehydes, alcohols, and amines with full preservation of the enantiomeric purity. Density functional theory studies support that the key C-C bond-forming event between the alkyl copper intermediate and the oxocarbenium electrophile takes place with inversion of configuration of the Cu-C bond in a backside SE2-type mechanism.

Abstract
Transition metal-catalyzed enantioselective C-H carbonylation with carbon monoxide, an essential and easily available C1 feedstock, remains challenging. Here, we disclosed an unprecedented enantioselective C-H carbonylation catalyzed by inexpensive and readily available cobalt(II) salt. The reactions proceed efficiently through desymmetrization, kinetic resolution, and parallel kinetic resolution, affording a broad range of chiral isoindolinones in good yields with excellent enantioselectivities (up to 92 % yield and 99 % ee). The synthetic potential of this method was demonstrated by asymmetric synthesis of biological active compounds, such as (S)-PD172938 and (S)-Pazinaclone. The resulting chiral isoindolinones also serve as chiral ligands in cobalt-catalyzed enantioselective C-H annulation with alkynes to construct phosphorus stereocenter.

Abstract
The enantioselective installation of a methyl group onto a small molecule can result in the significant modification of its biological properties. While hydroalkylation of olefins represents an attractive approach to introduce alkyl substituents, asymmetric hydromethylation protocols are often hampered by the incompatibility of highly reactive methylating reagents and a lack of general applicability. Herein, we report an asymmetric olefin hydromethylation protocol enabled by CuH catalysis. This approach leverages methyl tosylate as a methyl source compatible with the reducing base-containing reaction environment, while a catalytic amount of iodide ion transforms the methyl tosylate in situ into the active reactant, methyl iodide, to promote the hydromethylation. This method tolerates a wide range of functional groups, heterocycles, and pharmaceutically relevant frameworks. Density functional theory studies suggest that after the stereoselective hydrocupration, the methylation step is stereoretentive, taking place through an SN2-type oxidative addition mechanism with methyl iodide followed by a reductive elimination.

Abstract
AbstractCarbonylation, one of the most powerful approaches to the preparation of carbonylated compounds, has received significant attention from researchers active in various fields. Indeed, impressive progress has been made on this subject over the past few decades. Among the various types of carbonylation reactions, asymmetric carbonylation is a straightforward methodology for constructing chiral compounds. Although rhodium-catalyzed enantioselective hydroformylations have been discussed in several elegant reviews, a general review on palladium-catalyzed asymmetric carbonylations is still missing. In this review, we summarize and discuss recent achievements in palladium-catalyzed asymmetric carbonylation reactions. Notably, this review’s contents are categorized by reaction type.

Abstract
The construction of chiral quaternary carbon stereocenters has been a long-standing challenge in organic chemistry. Particularly, α-quaternary amino acids that are of high importance in biochemistry still lack a straightforward synthetic method. We here reported a hydroformylation approach to access chiral quaternary stereogenic centers, which has been a long-standing challenge in transition metal catalysis. α,β-Unsaturated carboxylic acid derivatives undergo hydroformylation with a rhodium catalyst to generate an α-quaternary stereocenter under mild conditions. By using this method, a variety of chiral α-quaternary amino acids could be synthesized with satisfactory enantioselectivity. In-depth investigation revealed that the regioselectivity is dramatically influenced by the electronic properties of the substituents attached to the target C

Abstract
Chiral bridged [2,2,1] bicyclic lactones are privileged structural units in pharmaceutics and bioactive nature products. However, the synthetic methods for these compounds are rare. Here we report an efficient method for enantioselective construction of bridged [2,2,1] bicyclic lactones bearing a quaternary stereocenter via Rh-catalyzed asymmetric hydroformylation/intramolecular cyclization/pyridium chlorochromate (PCC) oxidation. By employing a hybrid phosphine-phosphite chiral ligand, a series of cyclopent-3-en-1-ols are transformed into corresponding γ-hydroxyl aldehydes with specific syn-selectivity. Then, hemiacetals form in situ and oxidation with PCC in one-pot affords bridged [2,2,1] bicyclic lactones in high yields and excellent enantiomeric excess. Replacing the hydroxyl group by an ester group, cyclopentanecarbaldehydes with a chiral all-carbon quaternary stereocenter in the γ-position can be generated efficiently.

Abstract
Hydroaminocarbonylation of alkenes is one of the most promising yet challenging methods for the synthesis of amides. Herein, we reported the development of a novel and effective Pd-catalyzed Markovnikov hydroaminocarbonylation of 1,1-disubstituted or 1,1,2-trisubstituted alkenes with aniline hydrochloride salts to afford amides bearing an α quaternary carbon. The reaction makes use of readily available starting materials, tolerates a wide range of functional groups, and provides a facile and straightforward approach to a diverse array of amides bearing an α quaternary carbon. Mechanistic investigations suggested that the reaction proceeded through a palladium hydride pathway. The hydropalladation and CO insertion are reversible, and the aminolysis is probably the rate-limiting step.

Abstract
Metal-catalyzed hydroformylation and hydrogenation heavily rely on ligands, among which phosphorous ligands play a pivotal role. This personal account presents a selection of three distinct classes of phosphorous ligands, namely, monodentate meta-substituted phosphinites, bis-phosphites, and P-chiral supramolecular phosphines, developed in our group. The synthesis of these ligands, isolation, characterization, and their performance in transition metal-catalyzed hydroformylation, isomerizing hydroformylation, and asymmetric hydrogenation of olefins is summarized. The state of the art development in iron-catalyzed hydroformylation of alkenes and our contributions to the field is discussed. Use of phosphines enabled iron-catalyzed hydroformylation of alkenes under mild conditions. Thus, this account demonstrates the central role of phosphorus ligands in industrially relevant transformations such as hydrogenation and hydroformylation. The seemingly matured field of ligand discovery still holds significant potential and will steer the field of homogeneous catalysis.

Abstract
The successful rhodium-catalyzed asymmetric hydroformylation and hydroaminomethylation of α-substituted acrylamides is described using 1,3-phosphite-phosphoramidite ligands based on a sugar backbone. A broad scope of chiral aldehydes and amines were afforded in high yields and excellent enantioselectivities (up to 99%). Furthermore, the synthetic potential of this method is demonstrated by the single-step synthesis of the brain imaging molecule RWAY.

Abstract
Asymmetric hydroformylation of 1,2-dialkyl olefins was reported. In order to increase the enantiomeric induction, steric auxiliary sulfonyl groups were introduced. Using a Rh/Yanphos complex as catalyst, chiral aldehydes were obtained with high enantioselectivities under mild pressure. The easily removable auxiliary made this method a powerful tool in the preparation of important enantiopure building blocks.

Abstract
Rhodium-catalyzed asymmetric anti-Markovnikov hydroformylation of α-substituted acrylates/acrylamides has been developed. By employing the Rh/(S,S)-DTBM-YanPhos complex, a series of β-chiral linear aldehydes were obtained in high yields (up to 94% yield) and high enantioselectivities (up to 96% ee). The utility of this methodology is demonstrated by a gram-scale reaction and a concise synthetic route to chiral γ-butyrolactone.

Abstract
An efficient one-pot assembly of all-carbon spiro-oxindole compounds from non-oxindole-based materials has been developed through a palladium-catalyzed asymmetric Heck/carbonylative lactonization and lactamization sequence. Diversified spirooxindole γ-and δ-lactones/lactams were accessed in high yields with good to excellent enantioselectivities (up to 99 % ee) under mild reaction conditions. The natural product coixspirolactam A was conveniently synthesized by applying the current methodology, and thus its absolute configuration was elucidated for the first time. Asymmetric synthesis of an effective CRTH2 receptor antagonist has also been demonstrated utilizing this method in the key step.

Abstract
A series of titanate nanotube-supported metal catalysts (M/TNTs, M = Rh, Au orAu–Rh) were facilely synthesized. The effects of different Au contents, reduction processes and sequence of loading metals on their catalytic performances in the hydroformylation of vinyl acetate were comparatively investigated. The results showed that some Au and Rh formed bimetallic particles. Furthermore, the presence of Au in catalysts could significantly improve the selectivity of reaction for aldehydes. Compared with the monometallic catalysts (Rh0.33/TNTs-1 and Au0.49/TNTs-2), the resultant bimetallic catalysts exhibited significantly higher selectivity for aldehydes as well as higher TOF values in the hydroformylation of vinyl acetate. Among them, Au0.52/Rh0.32/TNTs-12 displayed the best catalytic performance. The corresponding selectivity for aldehydes was as high as 88.67%and the turnover frequency (TOF) reached up to 3500 h−1. In addition, for the reduction of Rh3+ and Au3+ ions, the photo-reduction and ethanol-reduction were the optimal techniques under the present conditions, respectively.

Abstract
In the nearly 80 years since catalytic hydroformylation was first reported, hundreds of billions of pounds of aldehyde have been produced by this atom efficient one-carbon homologation of alkenes in the presence of H2 and CO. Despite the economy and demonstrated scalability of hydroformylation, the enantioselective process (asymmetric hydroformylation, AHF) currently does not contribute significantly to the production of chiral aldehydes and their derivatives. Current impediments to practical application of AHF include low diversity of chiral ligands that provide effective rates and selectivities, limited exploration of substrate scope, few demonstrations of efficient flow reactor processes, and incomplete mechanistic understanding of the factors that control reaction selectivity and rate. This Account summarizes developments in ligand design, substrate scope, reactor technology, and mechanistic understanding that advance AHF toward practical and atom-efficient production of chiral α-stereogenic aldehydes. Initial applications of AHF were limited to activated terminal alkenes such as styrene, but recent developments enable high selectivity for unactivated olefins and more complex substrates such as 1,1'- and 1,2-disubstituted alkenes. Expanded substrate scope primarily results from new chiral phosphine ligands, especially phospholanes and bisdiazaphospholanes (BDPs). These ligands are now more accessible due to improved synthesis and resolution procedures. One of the virtues of diazaphospholanes is the relative ease of derivatization, including attachment to heterogeneous supports. Hydroformylation involves toxic and flammable reactants, a serious concern in pharmaceutical production facilities. Flow reactors offer many process benefits for handling dangerous reagents and for systematically moving from research to production scales. New approaches to achieving good gas-liquid mixing in flow reactors have been demonstrated with BDP-derived catalyst systems and lend assurance that AHF can be practically implemented by the pharmaceutical and fine chemical industries. To date, progress in AHF has been empirically driven, because hydroformylation is a complex, multistep process for which the origins of chemo-, regio-, and enantioselectivity are difficult to elucidate. Mechanistic complexity arises from three concurrent catalytic cycles (linear and two diastereomeric branched paths), significant pooling of catalyst as off-cycle species, and multiple elementary steps that are kinetically competitive. Addressing such complexity requires new approaches to collecting kinetic and extra-kinetic information and analyzing these data. In this Account, we describe our group's progress toward understanding the complex kinetics and mechanism of AHF as catalyzed by rhodium bis(diazaphospholane) catalysts. Our strategy features both "outside-in" (i.e., monitoring catalytic rates and selectivities as a function of reactant concentration and temperature) and "inside-out" (i.e., building kinetic models based on the rates of component steps of the catalytic reaction) approaches. These studies include isotopic labeling, interception and characterization of catalytic intermediates using NMR techniques, multinuclear high-pressure NMR spectroscopy, and sophisticated kinetic modeling. Such broad-based approaches illuminate the kinetic and mechanistic origins of selectivity and activity of AHF and the elucidation of important principles that apply to all catalytic reactions.

Abstract
Hydroformylation utilizes dihydrogen, carbon monoxide, and a catalyst to transform alkenes into aldehydes. This work applies chiral bisdiazaphospholane (BDP)- and bisphospholanoethane-ligated rhodium complexes to the hydroformylation of a variety of alkenes to produce chiral tetrasubstituted aldehydes. 1,1'-Disubstituted acrylates bearing electron-withdrawing substituents undergo hydroformylation under mild conditions (1 mol % of catalyst/BDP ligand, 150 psig gas, 60 °C) with high conversions and yields of tetrasubstituted aldehydes (e.g., 13:1 regioselectivity, 85% ee, and <1% hydrogenation for 1-fluoromethyl acrylate). The scope also encompasses both acyclic 1,1'-disubstituted and trisubstituted, electron-poor alkenes as well as di- and trisubstituted alkenes composed of small rings with exocyclic and endocyclic unsaturation. For example, 1-methylene-β-lactam furnished the tetrasubstituted aldehyde with 98% selectivity and up to 83% ee. Notably, chiral trisubstituted bicyclic methyleneaziridines are transformed with >99% regioselectivity and >19:1 diastereoselectivity to tetrasubstituted aldehydes at rates >50 catalyst turnovers/hour. NMR studies of the noncatalytic reaction of HRh(BDP)(CO)2 with methyl 1-fluoroacrylate enable interception of tertiary alkylrhodium intermediates, demonstrating migratory insertion to acyl species is slower than formation of secondary and primary alkylrhodium intermediates. Overall, these investigations reveal how the interplay of sterics, electronics, and ring strain are harnessed to provide access to valuable α-tetrasubstituted aldehyde synthetic building blocks by promoting branched-selective hydroformylation.

Abstract
Hydrogen transfer initiated processes are eco-compatible transformations allowing the reversible OFF ↔ ON activation of otherwise unreactive substrates. The minimization of stoichiometric waste as well as the unique activation modes provided by these transformations make them key players for a greener future for organic synthesis. Long limited to catalytic reactions that form racemic products, considerable progress on the development of strategies for controlling diastereo- and enantioselectivity has been made in the last decade. The aim of this review is to present the different strategies that enable enantioselective transformations of this type and to highlight how they can be used to construct key synthetic building blocks in fewer operations with less waste generation.
