Abstract
Macrocycles incorporating conformationally defined indoles are widely found in bioactive natural products. However, the catalytic enantioselective synthesis of planar-chiral indoles via indolization involving macrocyclization remains elusive. Herein, we present the first rhodium(III)-catalyzed atroposelective macrocyclization, which involves the C-H activation of aniline, and a subsequent oxidation [3 + 2] annulation reaction with an intramolecular alkyne. This protocol achieves the construction of indoles, macrocyclization, and planar chirality control in a single step. Importantly, this strategy produces macrocyclic atropisomers bearing full-carbon ansa chains, which represent challenging targets in organic synthesis. Thermodynamic experiments revealed that the rotational barrier of the full-carbon ansa chain-linked macrocyclic atropisomer was lower than that of the atropisomer bearing an oxa-ansa chain. The reaction mechanism was elucidated by computational studies, which revealed that the C-H activation and intramolecular alkyne insertion steps collectively determined the enantioselectivity.

Abstract
In this study, we unveil a novel method for the asymmetric dearomatization of indoles under cobalt/photoredox catalysis. By strategically activating C-H bonds of amides and subsequent migratory insertion of π-bonds present in indole as reactive partner, we achieve syn-selective tetrahydro-5H-indolo[2,3-c]isoquinolin-5-one derivatives with excellent yields and enantiomeric excesses of up to >99 %. The developed method operates without a metal oxidant, relying solely on oxygen as the oxidant and employing an organic dye as a photocatalyst under irradiation. Control experiments and stoichiometric studies elucidate the reversible nature of the enantiodetermining C-H activation step, albeit not being rate-determining. This study not only expands the horizon of cobalt-catalyzed asymmetric C-H bond functionalization, but also showcases the potential synergy between cobalt and photoredox catalysis in enabling asymmetric synthesis of complex molecules.

Abstract
In the vast majority of top-selling pharmaceutical and industrial products, phenolic structural motifs are highly prevalent. Non-functionalized simple phenols serve as building blocks in the synthesis of value-added chemicals. It is worth mentioning that lignin, being the largest renewable biomass source of aromatic building blocks in nature, mainly consists of phenolic units, which enable the production of structurally diverse phenols. Given their remarkable applicability in the chemical value chain, many efforts have been devoted to increasing the molecular complexity of the phenolic scaffold. Among the key techniques, direct functionalization of Csp2-H is a powerful tool, enabling the construction of new Csp2-C bonds in an economical and atomic manner. Herein we present and summarize the large plethora of direct Csp2-H functionalization methods that enables scaffold diversification of simple, unprotected phenols, leading to the formation of new Csp2-C bonds. In this review article, we intend to summarize the contributions that appeared in the literature mainly in the last 5 years dealing with the functionalization of unprotected phenols, both catalytic and non-catalytic. Our goal is to highlight the key findings and the ongoing challenges in the stimulating and growing research dedicated to the development of new protocols for the valorization of phenols.

Abstract
The development of Pd(II)-catalyzed dearomatization transformation of dibenzoxaborins with alkynes triggered by transmetalation from boron to palladium has been achieved, leading to the synthesis of spirocyclohexadienones, an important skeleton demonstrating potential biomedical utility. The [3 + 2] spiroannulation exhibits remarkable regioselectivity and broad substrate scope under mild reaction conditions. This methodology employs dibenzoxaborin as a substrate to establish the formal dearomatization of 2-phenylphenol, which poses a formidable energy barrier to the destruction of aromaticity.

Abstract
N-N axially chiral biaryls represent a rarely explored class of atropisomeric compounds. We hereby report rhodium-catalyzed enantioselective [4 + 2] oxidative annulation of internal alkynes with benzamides bearing two classes of N-N directing groups. The coupling occurs under mild conditions via NH and CH annulation through the dynamic kinetic transformation of the directing group and is highly enantioselective with good functional tolerance. Computational studies of a coupling system at the DFT level has been conducted, and the alkyne insertion was identified as the enantio-determining as well as the turnover-limiting step.

Abstract
N-N axially chiral biaryls represent a rarely explored class of atropisomers. Reported herein is construction of diverse classes of diaxially chiral biaryls containing N-N and C-N/C-C diaxes in distal positions in excellent enantioselectivity and diastereoselectivity. The N-N chiral axis in the products provides a handle toward solvent-driven diastereodivergence, as has been realized in the coupling of a large scope of benzamides and sterically hindered alkynes, affording diaxes in complementary diastereoselectivity. The diastereodivergence has been elucidated by computational studies which revealed that the hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) solvent molecule participated in an unusual manner as a solvent as well as a ligand and switched the sequence of two competing elementary steps, resulting in switch of the stereoselectivity of the alkyne insertion and inversion of the configuration of the C-C axis. Further cleavage of the N-directing group in the diaxial chiral products transforms the diastereodivergence to enantiodivergence.

Abstract
Density functional theory calculations were performed to study the competing pathways of rhodacycle intermediates generated in Rh(III)-catalyzed annulations of 2-alkenyl phenols and 2-alkenyl anilides with alkynes. The results show that the multiple pathways of eight-membered rhodacycles can be subtly tuned to give specific cyclic products. The seven-membered oxacyclic and spirocyclic products from 2-alkenyl phenols are formed by favoring the pathway of dissociating the Rh-O bond of O-contained rhodacycles, which are followed by antarafacial nucleophilic attack. The indoline product from 2-alkenyl anilides is generated through the pathway of intramolecular olefin migratory insertion of the N-contained rhodacycle.

Abstract
A new class of C2 -symmetric, chiral cyclopentadienyl ligand based on planar chiral ferrocene backbone was developed. A series of its corresponding rhodium(I), iridium(I), and ruthenium(II) complexes were prepared as well. In addition, the rhodium(I) complexes were evaluated in the asymmetric catalytic intramolecular amidoarylation of olefin-tethered benzamides via C-H activation.

Abstract
Palladium-catalyzed dearomative [2+2+1] annulations of aryl ethers with alkynes are reported via para-selective C-H functionalization, providing highly functionalized spirocyclohexadienones in moderate to excellent yields under mild reaction conditions. Importantly, mechanistic investigation indicated an unusual C-O bond cleavage was involved. Moreover, polyarylated naphthalenes could be obtained via oxidative [2+2+2] annulation by tuning aryl ethers from monomethoxybenzenes to polymethoxybenzenes under an identical catalytic system.

Abstract
Transition-metal-catalyzed C-H functionalization reactions with Cp*MIII catalysts (M=Co, Rh, Ir) have found a wide variety of applications in organic synthesis. Albeit the intrinsic difficulties in achieving catalytic stereocontrol using these catalysts due to their lack of additional coordination sites for external chiral ligands and the conformational flexibility of the Cp ligand, catalytic enantioselective C-H functionalization reactions using the Group 9 metal triad with Cp-type ligands have been intensively studied since 2012. In this minireview, the progress in these reactions according to the type of the chiral catalyst used are summarized and discussed. The development of chiral Cpx ligands the metal complexes thereof, artificial metalloenzymes, chiral carboxylate-assisted enantioselective C-H activations, enantioselective alkylations assisted by chiral carboxylic acids or chiral sulfonates, and chiral transient directing groups are discussed.

Abstract
o-Alkenyl N-triflylanilides underwent rhodium(III)-catalyzed oxidative annulations with alkynes to produce different types of naphthylamides in a process which involves the cleavage of two C-H bonds. Remarkably, besides formal dehydrogenative (4C+2C) cycloadducts, the reaction also produces variable amounts of isomeric naphthylamides, whose formation requires a formal migration of the alkenyl moiety from the ortho to the meta position of the anilide. The annulation reaction can be efficiently carried out in the absence of external oxidants, such as Cu(OAc)2 .

Abstract
Computational studies on carboxylate-assisted C-H activation and functionalization at group 8-10 transition metal centers are reviewed. This Review is organized by metal and will cover work published from late 2009 until mid-2016. A brief overview of computational work prior to 2010 is also provided, and this outlines the understanding of carboxylate-assisted C-H activation in terms of the "ambiphilic metal-ligand assistance" (AMLA) and "concerted metalation deprotonation" (CMD) concepts. Computational studies are then surveyed in terms of the nature of the C-H bond being activated (C(sp2)-H or C(sp3)-H), the nature of the process involved (intramolecular with a directing group or intermolecular), and the context (stoichiometric C-H activation or within a variety of catalytic processes). This Review aims to emphasize the connection between computation and experiment and to highlight the contribution of computational chemistry to our understanding of catalytic C-H functionalization based on carboxylate-assisted C-H activation. Some opportunities where the interplay between computation and experiment may contribute further to the areas of catalytic C-H functionalization and applied computational chemistry are identified.
