Abstract
CH⋯O bonds are a privileged noncovalent interaction determining the energies and geometries of a large number of structures. In catalytic settings, these are invoked as a decisive feature controlling many asymmetric transformations involving aldehydes. However, little is known about their stereochemical role when the interaction involves other substrate types. We report the results of computations that show for the first time thionium hydrogen bonds to be an important noncovalent interaction in asymmetric catalysis. As a validating case study, we explored an asymmetric Pummerer rearrangement involving thionium intermediates to yield enantioenriched N,S-acetals under BINOL-derived chiral phosphate catalysis. DFT and QM/MM hybrid calculations showed that the lowest energy pathway corresponded to a transition state involving two hydrogen bonding interactions from the thionium intermediate to the catalyst. However, the enantiomer resulting from this process differed from the originally published absolute configuration. Experimental determination of the absolute configuration resolved this conflict in favor of our calculations. The reaction features required for enantioselectivity were further interrogated by statistical modeling analysis that utilized bespoke featurization techniques to enable the translation of enantioselectivity trends from intermolecular reactions to those proceeding intramolecularly. Through this suite of computational modeling techniques, a new model is revealed that provides a different explanation for the product outcome and enabled reassignment of the absolute product configuration.

Abstract
A novel Pd-catalyzed chemo- and regiocontrolled tandem cyclization/cross-coupling reaction of 3-alkynyl chromone with aryl iodide was developed for the synthesis of 4H-furo[3,2-c]chromenes and xanthones. The difunctionalization of alkynes through O-attack/5-exo-dig and C-attack/6-endo-dig cyclization was reported by this rare approach, which was selectively controlled by the addition of KF or a bidentate phosphine ligand. A one-pot tandem process was demonstrated directly from γ-alkynyl-1,3-diketone for this method.

Abstract
An asymmetric allylation and allenylation of isatins with facile organoboron reagents was developed under the catalysis of a Lewis acid. A series of optically pure 3-allyl-3-hydroxyoxindoles and 3-allenyl-3-hydroxyoxindoles can be obtained in excellent yields (up to 99% yield) and high enantioselectivities (up to 97% ee). The possible transition state was supported by DFT calculation and the corresponding mechanism was proposed. A gram scale experiment and further functionalization of these chiral 3-hydroxyoxindoles are established.

Abstract
Since Akiyama and Terada independently reported the introduction of chiral phosphoric acids (CPAs) as effective catalysts for Mannich-type reactions in 2004, the field of CPA catalysis has grown immensely. Terada reported in 2008 the first example of the activation of aldehydes by a CPA. Based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations, Terada proposed a dual activation mode for this enantioselective aza-ene-type reaction between an aldehyde and an enecarbamate. In this model, hydrogen bonds between the catalyst's hydroxyl group and the carbonyl oxygen and the catalyst's P═O and the formyl proton were observed; the nucleophile then attacks without coordination to the catalyst. This reaction model provided the mechanistic basis for understanding Terada's reaction and many other asymmetric transformations. In the present study, DFT calculations are reported that identify a lower-energy mechanism for this landmark reaction. In this new model, hydrogen bonds between the catalyst's hydroxyl group and the aldehyde oxygen and the catalyst's P═O and the NH group of the enecarbamate are seen. The new model rationalizes the stereoselective outcome of Terada's reaction and offers insight into why a more sterically demanding catalyst gives lower levels of enantioselectivity.

Abstract
Hydrobromination and oxy-isomerization of (o-arylethynyl)benzyl alcohols to yield brominated aryl ketones were achieved with bromotrimethylsilane. The substrate scope suggested that vinyl carbocations, stabilized by the conjugated aryl groups, are the reaction intermediates. 1H-Isochromene was also detected by 1H NMR, and an isolated 1H-isochromene was converted to the product when retreated with TMSBr. The formation of 1H-isochromene is equivalent to a 6-endo-dig cyclization and contrasts with the corresponding reactions under basic conditions, in which the 5-exo-dig process dominated.

Abstract
The precise design of a catalyst for a given reaction is extremely difficult, often requiring a significant empirical screening campaign to afford products in high yields and enantiomeric excess. Design becomes even more challenging if one requires a catalyst that performs well for a diverse range of substrates. Such "privileged" catalysts exist, but little is known why they operate so generally. We report the results of computations which show that when substrate and catalyst features are conserved between significantly different mechanistic regimes, similar modes of activation can be invoked. As a validating case study, we explored a Hantzsch ester hydrogenation of α,β-unsaturated iminiums involving BINOL-derived chiral phosphates and find they impart asymmetric induction in an analogous fashion to their acid counterpart. Specifically, DFT calculations at the IEFPCM(1,4-dioxane)-B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p)//B3LYP/6-31G(d) level predicted enantioselectivity to be close to the experimental value (82% ee calculated, 96% ee experimental) and showed that the reaction proceeds via a transition state involving two hydrogen-bonding interactions from the iminium intermediate and nucleophile to the catalyst. These interactions lower the energy of the transition structure and provide extra rigidity to the system. This new model invokes "privileged" noncovalent interactions and leads to a new explanation for the enantioselectivity outcome, ultimately providing the basis for the development of general catalyst design principles and the translation of mechanistically disparate reaction profiles for the prediction of enantioselectivity outcomes using statistical models.

Abstract
The mechanism of the asymmetric BINOL-derived hydroxyl carboxylic acid catalyzed allylboration of benzaldehyde was investigated using density functional theory calculations. A new reaction model is proposed, and the roles of the two Brønsted acidic sites of the catalyst elucidated. Catalyst distortion was found to be a key factor in determining stereoselectivity. The flexibility of the hydroxyl carboxylic acid catalyst leads to significant differences in the mechanism and origins of selectivity compared to the equivalent phosphoric acid catalyzed reaction.

Abstract
The enantioselective anti- and syn-(borylmethyl)allylation of aldehydes via phosphoric acid catalysis is reported. Both (E)- and (Z)-γ-borylmethyl allylboronate reagents were prepared via the Cu-catalyzed highly stereoselective protoboration of 1,3-dienylboronate. Chiral phosphoric acid-catalyzed aldehyde allylation with either the (E)- or (Z)-allylboron reagent provided 1,2-anti- or 1,2-syn-adducts in good yields with high enantioselectivities. The application to the synthesis of morinol D was accomplished.

Abstract
In this study, we disclose the catalytic addition of bi(cyclopentyl)diol-derived boronates to aldehydes promoted by chiral phosphoric acids, allowing for the formation of enantioenriched homoallylic, propargylic, and crotylic alcohols (up to >99% enantiomeric excess (ee), diastereomeric ratio (dr) >20:1). These boronate substrates provided superior enantioselectivities, allowing for the reactions to proceed with low catalyst loading (0.5-5 mol %) and reduced reaction time (15 min at room temperature for aldehyde allylboration). A wide substrate scope was exhibited, and the novel boronates provided high enantiocontrol. Reactions with substituted allylboronates and aldehydes yielded vicinal stereogenic alcohols bearing β-tertiary or quaternary carbon centers. High enantio- and diastereoselectivities were found due to the closed six-membered chair-like transition state, with backbone modifications of the boronate and its interactions with the chiral phosphoric acid being the most likely contributing factor.

3,3-Bis(2,4,6-triisopropylphenyl)-1,1-binaphthyl-2,2-diyl
hydrogenphosphate
(TRIP) catalyzes the asymmetric allylation of aldehydes with organozinc
compounds, leading to highly valuable structural motifs, like precursors
to lignan natural products. Our previously reported mechanistic proposal
relies on two reaction intermediates and requires further investigation
to really understand the mode of action and the origins of stereoselectivity.
Detailed ab initio calculations, supported by experimental data, render
a substantially different mode of action to the allyl boronate congener.
Instead of a Brønsted acid-based catalytic activation, the chiral
phosphate acts as a counterion for the Lewis acidic zinc ion, which
provides the activation of the aldehyde.

Abstract
Weak hydrogen bonds are increasingly hypothesized to play key roles in a wide range of chemistry from catalysis to gelation to polymer structure. Here, 15N/13C spin-echo magic-angle spinning (MAS) solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments are applied to "view" intermolecular CH···N hydrogen bonding in two selectively labeled organic compounds, 4-[15N] cyano-4'-[13C2] ethynylbiphenyl (1) and [15N3,13C6]-2,4,6-triethynyl-1,3,5-triazine (2). The synthesis of 2-15N3,13C6 is reported here for the first time via a multistep procedure, where the key element is the reaction of [15N3]-2,4,6-trichloro-1,3,5-triazine (5) with [13C2]-[(trimethylsilyl)ethynyl]zinc chloride (8) to afford its immediate precursor [15N3,13C6]-2,4,6-tris[(trimethylsilyl)ethynyl]-1,3,5-triazine (9). Experimentally determined hydrogen-bond-mediated 2hJCN couplings (4.7 ± 0.4 Hz (1) and 4.1 ± 0.3 Hz (2)) are compared with density functional theory (DFT) gauge-including projector augmented wave (GIPAW) calculations, whereby species-independent coupling values 2hKCN (29.0 × 1019 kg m-2 s-2 A-2 (1) and 27.9 × 1019 kg m-2 s-2 A-2 (2)) quantitatively demonstrate the J couplings for these "weak" CH···N hydrogen bonds to be of a similar magnitude to those for conventionally observed NH···O hydrogen-bonding interactions in uracil (2hKNO: 28.1 and 36.8 × 1019 kg m-2 s-2 A-2). Moreover, the GIPAW calculations show a clear correlation between increasing 2hJCN (and 3hJCN) coupling and reducing C(H)···N and H···N hydrogen-bonding distances, with the Fermi contact term accounting for at least 98% of the isotropic 2hJCN coupling.

Abstract
A simple methodology for the synthesis of enynes by indium mediated diastereoselective allylation of aromatic N-tert-butanesulfinylimines bearing alkenyl groups at ortho-position with allyl bromide has been developed. The addition of the allyl indium intermediate to the chiral imine took place with excellent diastereoselectivity. Ruthenium-catalyzed ring-closing metathesis of the resulting enynes provided the expected cyclic 1,3-dienes in good to moderate yields. These chiral dienes are potential precursors of biologically and pharmacologically active morphane derivatives.

Abstract
We report density functional theory calculations that examine the mechanism and origins of stereoselectivity of Soós' landmark discovery from 2005 that cinchona thioureas catalyze the asymmetric Michael addition of nitroalkanes to enones. We show that the electrophile is activated by the catalyst's protonated amine and that the nucleophile binds to the thiourea moiety by hydrogen bonding. These results lead to the correction of published mechanistic work which did not consider this activation mode. We have also investigated the corresponding cinchona squaramide-catalyzed reaction and found that it proceeds by the same mechanism despite the differences in the geometry of the two catalysts' hydrogen-bond-donating groups, which demonstrates the generality of this mechanistic model.

Abstract
The origins of the high enantioselectivity of chiral phosphoric acid-catalyzed oxetane desymmetrizations were investigated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Distortion of the catalyst structure, caused by steric crowding in the catalyst pocket of one enantiomeric transition state, is the main cause for stereochemical preference. A general model was developed to assist in the rational design of new catalysts for related transformations.
